Lackey (shoulder) last pitched on August 14, a no-decision against the Cardinals (6.2 IP, 0 ER, 5K, 1 BB). The Giants are 7-29 (.241) against him. Nunez is 4-13.

Cueto lost against the D’backs his last time out (4.2 IP, 4 ER, 5 K, 4 BB). He went 1-2 with a 4.38 in August. The Cubs are an unimpressive 21-117 (.179) against him. Coghlan is 5-17 with a HR.

Hendricks (13-7, 2.09) and the Cubs start a 9-game roadtrip in Milwaukee tomorrow to face Davies (10-6, 4.07) at 12:10pmCST.

This isn't a comment about Rizzo's recent performance (although his numbers during the last 7 days are ghastly) but Rizzo is the one guy that Maddon hasn't been giving time off to. I don't want an exhausted Rizzo limping into the playoffs. Give him a rest ala Heyward, whether he likes it or not. A few days in a row. Tell him to go somewhere and relax for a couple days in a nice spa. That is all.

j.heyward continues to crap out "just missed the defender" hits...tie game! the battle to keep his ob% from going below .300 has been a mighty battle the past couple weeks after his benching. even with his small hitting streak he's got a .298 ob% over that period coming into this game since he returned from his benching. ...and we're no longer tied after a squeeze by SF. boo.

That called third strike on Russell in the tenth was laughable to put it mildly. Call like that should put you out of the running for a post-season umpiring assignment.

    suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

    i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

    right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

    A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

    I'll always remember his 3-0 No-hitter against the Braves when Aaron's HR was blown back into the LF well and BIlly Williams made the catch with his back against the ivy.
