It looks like we picked the wrong weekend to stop sniffing glue.

Hendricks, today’s starter, gave up 2 ER in 6.2 innings but ended up with a no-decision in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. In three games against the Brewers this season, he is 1-0 with a 5.06. Overall, they are 22-114 (.193). Walker is 3-8.

Davies lost in Cincinnati his last time out (5.2 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB). He’s 1-2 with a 5.00 in three starts against the Cubs this season. For their careers, the Cubs are 38-137 (.277) against him. Bryant is 9-22 with a HR. Some of that would be nice.

The lead in the division is down to three games, but all will be forgiven with a win today. 

After a day off tomorrow, Harvey (5-4) and the Mets are in town to face Quintana (9-11) at 7:05pmCST on Tuesday.

ugg. not once over this 3 game series did i feel like the cubs were even competitive even though only 1 game was a blowout and 2 were close. the cubs didn't have a lead over 27 innings of play...3 runs total in the series. bleh.

Bottomline, this just isn't a very good team. Not bad obviously, but not a championship caiiber bunch either. Theo needs to make some tough decisions this winter and cut bait with some of his young pets and veterans. They aren't producing results, way too many putrid offensive performances this year.

Just as we all knew/feared -- the Cubs simply cannot beat good teams. They haven't done it all year, so I didn't really expect them to start now. I think Crunch nailed it -- even in the close games, it never felt like they were going to win this weekend. They went 16-8 in the previous 24 games -- all against losing teams. 3 runs in 3 games -- 2 of which were completely meaningless -- at home, when they had a chance to put the Brewers away. Don't know if they are tired or tight. Brewers pitching is good, but it ain't THAT good. OK, well -- rest up tomorrow and beat up on the Mets. But -- who ya got in the NL? Dodgers can't beat anybody, Cubs can't beat anybody good, Nats probably won't have Harper and will have Dusty, Brewers are inconsistent (swept by Reds then sweep Cubs), Cards seem pretty "meh". Diamondbacks?

"Meaningful games in September" -- it wasn't that long ago that a 2 game lead with 3 weeks to go was just a pipe dream. Buckle up and enjoy the ride, gents!

The Astros are departing from their Greeneville affiliate after the 2017 season. I'm driving the "The Cubs ought to get in the Appalachian League" bus. Because 35 more roster spots.

TIM: I think if the Cubs were to add an additional short-season affiliate, that it would be another team in the AZL (like the Padres did this season) rather than a team in the Appalachian League or the Pioneer League. 

In fact, strictly from a Player Development POV, it would be better to have the two short-season teams AND the Lo-A and Hi-A affiliates all based at the same place (just like Minor League Camp at Spring Training). That way players can be moved back & forth between affiliates without delay (just the time it would take to walk from Field #5 to Field #6) and travel costs are virtually nil, minor league field coordinators can work with players pre-game every day at the same time and the same place, and players can be moved up or down without the hassle of flying  from one city to another. 

Another less-radical way to do it would be to make Lo-A and Hi-A leagues short-season leagues, with all players assigned to teams below AA remaining at Extended Spring Training until mid-June. This would allow players to play games in warm weather during Spring months without postponements due to bad weather in April, May, and the first-half on June, and would allow clubs to better-control IP for pitchers. It would also consolidate instruction at one place. And no extra inning games.

I'd be good with either. That said, the "Compound" League would seem most beneficial to players not, how shall I say it, mature enough to do road trips. If a 22 year old has played four years of college ball (for instance), there seems precious little benefit in being far better than prep draft picks not ready to leave for the advanced level. Also, I have a mild concern about drainage at Sloan. Not the cool thing to say, but games in Mesa tend to get weathered-out more than most facilities. (Not my numbers, but someone else floated the concern. Perhaps Bill Mitchell.) If the drainage isn't right, perhaps it doesn't need six games a week. (In a Paul McCartney tone.) But, whichever level is good for me. When a team is releasing players over a lack of roster spots, add an affiliate. By the way, I'm trying to figure which South American Countries (specifically) make the most sense for an academy once Sam Zell goes away from the picture entirely. My guess is, any country where ($10,000 USD) will make a life-altering change in an entire family's life. Though, the internet doesn't post a list of these countries. Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brasil, and Bolivia would seem big enough. Not sure on the financials, though. Then, jump to Nigeria. And the $10,000 is the limit a team can spend on anyone before the spending limits kick in. (But you already knew that.)

Cubs just simply burned out. 20 games in 20 days, at the end of a long season after a short off season...just hit a brick wall. With that said, just flat out too many stretches this season of poor fundamental baseball that just hasn't been that fun to watch.

BLOCKHEAD: I thnk you hit the nail on the (block) head. There is a reason why the CBA allows clubs to play no more than 20 days in a row, and that's because clubs get worn down without days off. They just do. 

The Brewers came into the series knowing they had to win at least two-out-of-three, they had a day off on Thursday, had their starting pitchers lined up Nelson-Anderson-Davies (#1-#2-#3), and were clearly playing with urgency, focus, and desperation. 

The Cubs meanwhile drifted into the series looking like a tired worn-out team, playing with no apparent passion or urgency, and with their #5, #6, and #4 starters going against the Brewerrs #1, #2, and #3.

It was an embarrassing piss-poor performance by the Cubs in a series where they could have put the Brewers away. Hopefully the Cubs will wake-up, find some energy and focus, and beat-up the Mets and then take at least two-out-of-three from the Cards before the critical ten-game road-trip.

To me this is a systematic problem with the Cubs this year. Who really is our #1, #2, #3 pitcher? Sure Arietta looks the strongest in the 2nd half, but all the starters have been so up and down, how can you depend on them in a critical series? That 10 game road trip at the end of the season is cruel. One thing if it was all Midwest teams, but to have to fly to Tampa then back to STL/Mil for two 4-game series is cruel.

Great point about the Cubs' performance at the end of a 20 game stretch. Over the past 2 seasons, the Cubs' record at the end of those long stretches without a day off has been abysmal. No, I haven't crunched the numbers on that -- but the memory on that is pretty fresh and I recall the bad stretch they had last year before the All-Star break was at the end of a long stretch without a day off.

I'm now in the mindset if the Cubs don't make it to the playoffs, so be it. They just simply didn't deserve to be there and certainly don't feel like a WS winning team. However, I can't even imagine the thought of the Cardinals celebrating at the Cubs expense. Cardinals have been fundamentally flawed all year and keep falling to the cusp of elimination, only to beat up on crap teams as they should. If the Cubs lose...I sure as hell hope it is the Brewers making it in. Hard to root against a young, up start, overachieving team.

same. rooting against a small market team just feels like bullying...unless they employ one. it's one thing to load up on roids and get caught...it's another thing to drag through the dirt a bunch of people making 100s of times less money than you with less of a national stage to defend themselves. you threw yourself under the bus, don't drag innocent people under there with you trying to shield yourself.

    While the Chapman trade helped to cement a championship I honestly think that trade was made in a different era. Nobody trades their best prospects for rentals anymore.

    The Quintana trade was a stinker from day one. It seemed to be a product of Theo’s unshakable faith in his 2016 “core” and the consistent and mistaken idea that they were always just one guy away from a return to WS glory. The mistake was repeated several times and I think that realization along with a general evolution in baseball thinking has helped to shape Jed and the way he operates today.

    I had mixed emotions when I heard of the trade, as I have with most trades that involve high potential prospects.  But that is because I hate to trade a high potential prospect for a veteran with only a few years control, and with a much lower potential than the prospects give away.  I hated the trade of Cease and Jiminez for Quinta, because I viewed Quintana as a decent, but not top pitcher, being traded for two very high-potential prospects.  I disliked the trade for Chapman, because a high-potential prospect was traded for a rental, although in this case, the fact that the rental was a top player greatly softened the blow.  The trade of Ferris and Hope for Busch seemed even at the time, to be a good one, even though they gave up one of my favorite prospects.  The return was a high-potential prospect with 6 years of control, at a time when he could be a difference maker on the team.

    13 games hardly proves that it was a good trade, but at least it was a reasonable one, no matter how it turns out.  So far, so good.

    i was strongly happy about the deal, but words can barely describe how quickly zyhir hope went from "interesting youngster" to "high end prospect" when he showed up in arizona post-draft.

    it may not have shown up in the team prospect numbered rankings, but the dodgers had their eyes on such a low level guy for a reason and the cubs knew what they gave up.

    I have to disagree. They got not just A triple A stud but THE AAA stud of the entire PCL for a position player who hadn’t played above the AZL level and a pitcher who was rather mediocre in his first taste of pro ball at low A. I’m not saying the guys they traded haven’t shown great promise but they have a very long way to go and a whole lot to prove before they make the bigs. Especially since Busch filled a defined need (whether it had been at third or first) I take this trade any day of the week and don’t bother looking back.

    matt shaw (AA) has a .381/.552/.905 line through 7 games...3 homers and a triple.  6 games at 3rd, 1 game DH (5 PO, 7 A, 0 E).

    i was blown away confused/pissed when it was announced the cubs were trading for y.almonte.

    i was thrilled when m.busch was announced as part of the trade.

    it's really weird to have the "you gotta take this payroll guy, too" (1.9m) part of the trade leak before the main piece.

    the cubs didn't get a deal given what they gave up, but i was very happy to have a guy like busch in the fold with so much club control.

    Have to admit I was initially disappointed the Cubs traded away the upside of Jackson Ferris but Busch is making a believer out of me.  If I still lived in midwest guessing we would have invented some drink special named a Busch Bomb at the local drinking establishment to celebrate his homers.
