Cubs @ Phillies: Arrieta vs. Morgan and Hendricks vs. Asher (Games 139 and 140)

All clear for a twin-bill in Philly.

For the first game, we’ll see last night’s scheduled pitching matchup:

CHC (80-58): RHP Jake Arrieta (18-6, 2.03)
PHI (54-86): LHP Adam Morgan (5-5, 4.42)
First pitch: 4:05pmCT

Arrieta had a bit of an off-game, spreading out 4 hits over 8 innings. The Phillies are 12-51 (.235) against him. Franco is 2-2.

Morgan gave up 6 ER in 6.1 innings and lost in Boston his last time out. None of the Cubs have faced him.

And for the second game:

CHC (80-58): RHP Kyle Hendricks (6-6, 4.08)
PHI (54-86): RHP Alec Asher (0-2, 10.61)

Hendricks had a no-decision (5 IP, 1 ER) against AZ on Sunday. He’s 4-4 with a 4.56 on the road this year. None of the Phillies have faced him.

Asher came to the Phills from the Rangers in the Hamels deal in July. He took a beating in Boston (3.2 IP, 7 ER) his last time out and lost to the Padres (5.2 IP, 4 ER) in his debut. This is his third career appearance. None of the Cubs have faced him.

Go Cubs!

Carrie Muskat ‏@CarrieMuskat #Cubs will start a reliever on Sunday. Could be Edwards or Richard or Cahill or Wood called it! that about wraps up my pre/early-season maddon prediction rants. i'm getting an extra topping on my pizza tonight.

there's about 500-1000 people currently in the park...not an exaggeration...well, not much of one...seriously.

does anyone have a clue why ajax keeps hitting 2nd when he's not hitting 1st? ...besides stfu and don't question maddon or you hate this team and everything associated with it.

Don't like the feel of this one...just hope the Phils are not our version of the Pirates' Brewers.

Arietta falling behind an unusual number of batters today, but throwing some nasty pitches to get out of trouble. OK, offense, time to come out and play.

Doesn't matter too much with how much Cubs are winning, but yet another game with 10+ strikeouts for Cubs O.

And yet another nasty pitch to get himself out of trouble. ERA 1.99, absolutely amazing! Still think the Cy Young is Grienke's to lose, and he'll need to get hit pretty hard to lose it...but what an incredible year.

Jorge Soler is playing RF in the playoff game for the MB Pelicans. So far he's doubled in their 3 run 1st. Also walked in his 2nd at bat. Pelicans ahead 3-2, through 3. Victor Caratini had a 3 run double.

Arrieta gets his 19th win last 20 game winner for Cubs...Jon Lieber in 2001. Ron Coomer was his team mate.

Game 2: Fowler, Schwarber, Coghlan (RF), Rizzo, Bryant, Montero, Baez (2B), Hendricks, Russell

Castro, Baez, Russell combine for 5 hits and 3 RBI. The all-shortstop offense. EDIT: ..and then Baez and Russell go 0-9 in the nightcap. Oh well.

Those who predicted the Cubs would win 81 games this year -- congratulations, you have been proven correct!

MAN DOWN! MAN DOWN! schwarber with the most embarrassing 2-HR game he'll ever have.

I'm just trying to figure out what the logo is going to be when the team gets renamed The Chicago Schwarbers.

Schwarber slipped after rounding 1st base and did a full faceplant. It seemed that he wasn't quite sure he had a HR yet, looked to first base coach to see what he should do next before being told to keep rounding the bases. Then from his belly, he flashes the safe sign with his hands before getting up and returning to rounding the base path. Lots of laughing going on in the dugout. Also it's raining really hard in Cincy. 2-2 as rain delay theater starts.

Cubs

Rodney getting the ball in a low-leverage situation. Give him a chance with no pressure. I like the move, but I would keep him on a short leash.

Clinch winning season. By pre-season standards, it's already a successful year regardless. Magic number to 13. 3rd-place team. Extra games against Arizona and Florida next year? Nevermind, that's NFL.

Got a two-fer tonight in third row in LF, hoping to catch a Bryant, Baez, Russell, or Castro homer in that first one. Castro fooled me and went oppo. Fun time to be a Cubs fan. Not a great time to be a Phillies fan. Andres Blanco batting 3rd. Ouch.

Only 6 games behind the Cardinals ... kind of wish Maddon hadn't have tried to get Strop some confidence in that final St. Louis game. Still makes no sense to me.

Well, it was 7-8-9 hitters -- probably the best chance Joe had to try to get Strop over his "Cardinal" issue. Didn't work, but I can see the logic. The other problem was the lack of bullpen depth -- once Strop struggled, the next 2 up were a recently failed starter and an old guy claimed off of waivers.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
