Good thing there is more to the game than Pitching and Hitting: "The Cubs and Cardinals are strikingly similar teams in a lot of ways. On the pitching side, Cubs starters have posted a 3.80 FIP (91 FIP-, which adjusts for park and league) while Cardinals starters have posted a 3.84 FIP (94 FIP-). Cubs relievers are at a 93 FIP- while the Cardinals are at 94 this year. On offense the team’s have posted identical .331 wOBA, when park adjusted comes out to a 106 wRC+ for the Cardinals and a 105 wRC+ for the Cubs. If you ignore defense and base running, the Cardinals and Cubs are very similar teams. Base running and defense should actually be considered, and taking those into account helps to make up the massive gulf in the standings between the two teams. The Cubs are the fourth best base running team in MLB with roughly 13 runs above average while the Cardinals are the worst team in the National League at negative 15 runs compared to average. The Cubs have good defensive players at nearly every position." http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/2016/9/12/12890556/cardinals-should-destroy…

Very interesting item, RR. The Cub defense gives them an edge over the Mets, Nats and Cards for sure, and probably the West Division teams, too, but I'm not sure about them. Baez will be a big deal in the playoffs. The opponent will always be aware of where he's playing. He could be a transformational player: teams that have the other bases covered will start to become defense-minded. I mean in the offseason. It's too late now for this year. The Mets took a leaky defense into the playoffs last year, which the Royals exploited but the Cubs didn't, because the other team's weakness in the field doesn't matter when you're whiffing. Ironically, the Mets probably let Murphy go because of his glove. But maybe the Cubs can keep Murphy busy in the field when they play the Nats.

vogelbomb is in SEA's lineup tonight. he debuted last night reaching on a fielder's choice, then being called out going 1st to 3rd because he missed touching 2nd base. welcome to the bigs.

There was a question a bit ago about Strop and not sure if it was answered but Hoyer said there is no update on him other then there has been no setbacks and he is on schedule.

Dex did not take kindly to whomever pointed out that he was slumping on here a few days ago :)

Addison Russell will be the Cubs shortstop for 5 more years (at least).

He will 28 years of age at that time. (this would be heading into 2022 and be his age 28 season)

Bryant will be 30, Schwaber would be 29. Rizzo would be at the end of his 2 team options and be 32.

for kicks...(feeling Phil will correct some of this)

  • C - Contreras (through 2022)
  • 1B - Rizzo (through 2021)
  • 2B - Zobrist (through 2019)
  • SS - Russell (through 2021)
  • 3B - Bryant (through 2021)
  • LF - Schwarber (through 2021)
  • CF - Almora (through 2022) or Ian Happ
  • RF - Soler (through 2020) or Heyward (through 2023)
  • and Baez (through 2021)

some trades will happen, but damn!!! Cubs literally have nothing to spend on except arbitration dollars and pitching.

Didn't even mention Candaliero. Jimenez looks like he's on pace to reach around 2019 or maybe late 2018 with some power projection. Nice compilation, Rob. Arbitration + pitching is still expensive but it beats trying to acquire the talent in the first place.

Things happen, Happ, Baez, Bryant could all move around. The Cubs could trade for Jose Fernandez. i don't see Zobrist really beling all that useful in 2-3 years to be honest.

I'm not that big a fan of Candelario myself, seems like a fill-in/bench guy at best imo. Eloy should be good, I'm sure the Cubs will be hoping Heyward opts out one of those 2 times he has a chance.

This is super down the line, but I'm curious how the trades will happen as these core guys approach free agency. I'm guessing the plan won't be to dump everyone in 2021 and start a full rebuild. It'll be interesting to see how the front office strategizes sustaining success. And, like everyone else probably, I'm very much hoping the Cubs can find a couple reliable SP in the minors, because it's damn difficult to build a rotation on only trades and free agents. They have Hendricks through the 2020 season, so that's one piece. They have Lester through the same stretch, but he'll be old as f***.

CHARLIE: We have seen Epstein-Hoyer in action now for almost five years, and the one situation we have yet to see them confront is operating a winning team where a key cog is a Boras client approaching free-agency.

Obviously Kris Bryant and Addison Russell are the big ones down the line (post-2021), but Jake Arrieta (free-agent post-2017) is the first test case.

So do the Cubs just ride with Arrieta to free-agency and then make a Qualifying Offer and pick up a comp draft pick between the 1st & 2nd round in the 2018 draft (presuming the QO is in the new CBA), or do they "jump the shark" and shop Arrieta this coming off-season? Or maybe wait until July 2017 and see where they stand, and if they are only in contention for a Wild Card, do what the Yankees & Pirares did this year and trade a pending free-agent while still trying to stay in contention for the Wild Card?

I would guess that no matter how things turn out in the 2016 playoffs, the Cubs will shop Arrieta during the off-season, and attempt to acquire two MLB-ready young arms with upside. The problem is that very few MLB clubs have two young quality arms that are MLB-ready and that they would be willing to trade. It would have to be a club where the perception is that the "window is closing" and Arrieta would be seen as the piece to get that club over the top.

Just because I am in proximity to the situation, the Diamondbacks are (with their current management) in that position, because they are worried about another wasted season while Zack Grienke gets a year older and Paul Goldschmidt is in the prime of his career on a very team-friendly contract. Presuming they are not fired, I could see LaRussa-Stewart doubling-down and pursuing a pitcher like Arrieta (even if it's just for one year) and maybe Jason Hammel, too, while offering a package that would include the likes of Robbie Ray, Archie Bradley, and Braden Shipley. Those three would be the type of pitchers the Cubs would probably be looking to acquire AND might be able to get back for Arrieta during the off-season, but again, only from certain teams.

The thing about Boras is that he has no problem with a club buying-out arbitration years, but not if it means giving the club additional years of club control beyond when the player would be a free-agent. Boras believes it is VERY important for a player to get to free-agency as soon as possible (hence the beef about the Cubs delay in calling up Bryant last season). But buying-out arbitration years isn't worth anything to a club (other than "cost certainty" - remember the Carlos Marmol contract?) if the club doesn't get at least a couple of additional years of club control beyond when the player would have been a FA (see Rizzo and Castro contracts) as part of the deal.

The Cubs knew what they were getting when they made the trades for Arrieta and Russell and when they drafted Bryant and Almora, but maybe being Boras clients was partly how the Cubs were able to get those guys. There are some teams who shy away from Boras clients, but the Cubs aren't one of them.

To sustain success with a team where several of the stars are Scott Boras clients, you might have to swallow hard and trade some talented players and pitchers a year before they walk away as free-agents.

BTW, iI think that the solution to the Qualifying Offer issue in the next CBA will be to have the club that loses the free-agent get a draft pick if the club makes a QO, but the club that signs the player does not lose a draft pick.

The reason the QO is the way it is now is because the owners wanted to (hopefully) limit and depress the market for the most-attractive free-agents, and tagging the player with a QO has (at least in some cases) done that, because some teams won't pursue a free-agent (like Dexter Fowler post-2015, for instance) if it means losing a draft pick.

Free agency post 2021 is gonna be crazy! Hope we can lock up one or two prior to that and test free agency with the others. But two of the top 3 (Bryant and Russell) are Boras guys, and the third (Rizzo) already signed his team friendly deal, so odds aren't good.

from Len:

Cubs run differential best in NL since 1953 on a per game basis (Brooklyn Dodgers).

Morrison tonight, in Lynchburg. Champagne after? It's about a 3-1/4 hour drive for me. . . . Nah, I don't think so. Maybe tomorrow (Thursday) if there's a game 5. Unsung hero: David Bote (who?) has been carrying this team in the playoffs and for much of the season.

Familia blows a 3-1 lead in the 9th, but Mets come back to beat the Nationals 4-3 in 10. Bad for Cards, good for Cubs. Hits with RISP would also be good for Cubs.

Willson with a pickoff of Piscotty at 1B. Nice! How do catcher pickoffs factor into catcher defensive stats? I assume it's not a CS, but it's still throwing out a baserunner.

You usually get one good pitch to hit if you are lucky, and Bryant swung and missed at his with the bases loaded, and that changed the game around. Metheny with a good move to bring Reyes in early, but it almost backfired, cuz it was a good cut. He just missed it. That's baseball.

SF continues to struggle in the 9th -- gave up 5 to SD to blow a 4-1 lead and lose. NL WC race...heading for a game 163?

With Eugene's cork-popping win last night over Everett, the Epstein-McLeod era has produced championships in the Northwest, Midwest and Carolina leagues, leaving only the Southern, Pacific Coast, National and Major leagues to be checked off.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.
