Cubs @ Pirates: Hammel vs. Cole and Lester vs. Happ (Games 143/144)

Let the pre-postseason begin.

Game one (a make-up from 8/3)
CHC (82-60): RHP Jason Hammel (8-6, 3.59)
PIT (86-56): RHP Gerrit Cole (16-8, 2.54)
First pitch: 12:35pmCT

Hammel won is St. Louis (6 IP, 1 ER) on Tuesday, so he’s had a couple extra days of rest. He’s 1-1 with a 2.08 in his two starts against the Pirates this year. They are 44-187 (.235) against him.

Cole also won in St. Louis (7 IP, 0 ER) his last time out--on the 6th. He was skipped in the rotation to limit his workload and to maximize the matchups. He’s 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in his two starts against the Cubs this season. The Cubs hit him pretty well: 26-82 (.317). Rizzo is 5-13. Castro is 5-11.

And game two
LHP Jon Lester (9-10, 3.50)
LHP J. A. Happ (9-7, 3.87)
First pitch: 6:05pmCT

Lester had a no-decision (7 IP, 1 ER) on Wednesday. He beat the Pirates on the road in May, going 7 strong. They are 27-106 (.255) against him. Ramirez is 3-7.

Happ has put together a string of 5 wins, including in Cinci (6 IP, 2 ER) his last time out. He lost to the Cubs last month (4.1 IP, 4 ER). The Cubs are 24-79 (.304) against him. Denorfia is 6-17 with 2 HR.

Go Cubs!

Hammel bb hbp rbi single Nice job Jason

cahill brought in to pitch to 1 guy with his slot due up 1st in the following inning...and then he hits for himself. it's september and the pen is huge...and the team is behind by 3 runs...what the hell maddon? hell, he could have at least double switched with castro being the 7 hitter in front of the pitcher if he really wants cahill in the game going forward.

Have to agree Johann - the entire back of the pen that was doing well until early August has sucked ass. It cannot be easy for him to try to find one guy to rely on to get key outs. They are failing miserably as a unit (save Rondon). Honestly, this team is not as deep yet as the Pirates and I do not expect them to get the Wild Card game. The Pirates are a better, deeper club than the Cardinals in my opinion. But next hear - watch out baby!

Looking at the situation, down 3 with opposing ace on the mound in the first game of a DH, not so sure in the 5th inning that giving up a pitcher is better than giving up an out. I didn't watch the game, so going off the situation, but it seemed clear Cahill was brought in for long relief which means he is going to come to bat at some point. 6th inning or beyond it seems prudent to pinch hit, which may mean my argument is a bit flimsy.

with it being september with expanded rosters, having excessive middle-IF already, and a ton of pen...i was looking for more than cahill leading off the inning. there could have been a double switch when bringing him in, they could have gone for a 1-batter pitcher then gone to cahill, etc etc... i was a bit more 'wtf' about ajax pinch hitting later vs what was on the bench. i do not get his use, especially with game 2 rolling around and him hitting 2nd again.

In some senses, I feel like Maddon is over-managing and doing just 1 to many strange things per game and it is biting him often. With that said, he has earned some leeway from me, but I'm with you on a many of your comments...still not sure about this Cahill one though, but I see where you are coming from.

i understand the other points on cahill...that one isn't some weird "fire maddon!" moment or anything remotely close. i'm just ready for every advantage to be taken with how things have been going recently for both the cubs and the giants, especially with expanded rosters and a lot of excess talent to tap.

Overall though I am loving the improvement I'm seeing from him. He is laying off pitches, he is not swinging for the fences everytime and he is still very young. With his stellar defense if he can be even an above average hitter he'll be a huge addition or trade bait.

Another game where a teams lets us back in (2 runs on WP), then we can't hold them (leadoff walk). We really need Lester and Jake to win...if they don't, I fear we are looking at a nasty losing streak, and SF is heating up and has a much easier schedule. Glad we had a big cushion when all of this started. But, these are the Cubs...nothing comes easy.

So all 4 losses on this road trip have been in the 7th inning or later? Last 3 following the exact same script of staging a comeback, only to give it right back. Every walk our bullpen issues is crushing us. If this lead drops under 5 by the time we get back home, with 8 of 11 against playoff teams, I'll be plenty worried.

Game #2: 1. Fowler 2. Jackson 3. Bryant 4. Rizzo 5. Castro 6. Baez 7. Russell 8. Ross 9. Lester In the odd stat of the day...Baez is the first player this season to swing and miss 3 pitches after having a 3-0 count according to ESPN Stats via Jesse Rogers

The difference between being 5.5 up and 6.5 up on SF at the end of the night today mentally feels like the difference between a 2 game lead versus 10 game lead. Ridiculous mellow dramatic statement, but this feels like the most important game of the year. Not thrilled about facing a solid lefty to end a losing streak.

Is it just me, or is Fowler swinging at a lot more first pitches recently? Seems to be pressing a little bit.

I know this isn't just me...Rizzo is popping up a ton lately. Must be dropping his shoulder.

Is that Baez or 3rd base coach? WTF is wrong with having 2 runners in scoring position with our pitcher not running the bases? Safety squeeze makes no sense there.

Steep decline in control for Lester in the 7th. Has been way ahead of the count all night long, and fell behind all five hitters in the 7th. Left a couple up in the zone, WP, HBP. Pitch count says he should go back out for 8th. Our bullpen quality says he should go out in the 8th...but I'm not feeling good either way. Need some offense here!

...and a brilliant 8th, hitting all his spots. 104 pitches. Could come out for the 9th. Amazing the difference between Lester's 2 starts. 5 days ago, I couldn't care less that our bullpen blew it against the Cards in Lester's start. Today, I am as tense as I would be in the WC game, holding my breath every pitch....hence me using Cub Reporter to talk to myself :-).

Lester earned his pay check today! Can't do any worse than coming home with a 4.5 game lead.

Oh Jeff samardzija tonite 3ip/11 hits/10 earned

Whooo! Needed that. A big thank you to our "mediocre pitcher" tonight!

In the UK for a few days -- I woke up, checked scores, fist pump for Lester, and noticed the SF game still going on. Chapman had just blown a 2-run lead as I headed down for a full English breakfast (now I need a nap), but the Reds had won by the time I got back to the room. Nice!

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.
