Cubs 2015 MLB Post-Season Eligibility List

A club's Active List (25-man roster) must be submitted to the MLB Commissioner prior to the start of each post-season series (WC, LDS, LCS, and World Series).

A club's Active List can be changed (tweaked) prior to the start of each series (WC, LDS, LCS, and WS). 

1. A player who received a Prohibited Substance Suspension prior to the start of Spring Training, during Spring Training, during the regular season, or during a post-season series (Wild Card, LDS, LCS, or World Series), is ineligible to play in any MLB or minor league post-season game(s) or series in that season, even if the player has completed serving the suspension.  

2. All other players on a club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster), MLB 60-day DL, or Military List prior to midnight (Eastern) on August 31st are automatically eligible to be included on a post-season Active List (25-man roster).  

3. A player must remain on his club's MLB Reserve List, MLB 60-day DL, and/or Military List continously throughout the remainder of the MLB regular season and post-season in order to be automatically eligible to be included on a post-season Active List (25-man roster). If a player is sent outright to the minors after midnight (Eastern) on August 31st, he is no longer automatically eligible to be included on a post-season Active List (25-man roster).  

4. A player on an MLB club's Disabled List (7-day, 15-day, or 60-day), Bereavement List, Family Medical Emergency List, or Paternity List is eligible to be included on a post-season Active List only after spending the minimum number of days required to be served by a player on that list. 

5. A post-season eligible player who is injured during a post-season series (LDS, LCS, or World Series) can (with the approval of the MLB Commssioner) be replaced during the series by another player, but the injured player is ineligible to be reinstated to his club's Active List (25-man roster) for the balance of that series and the next series (LCS or World Series). Also, a pitcher must replace a pitcher and a position player must replace a position player. However, it is NOT necessary for a catcher to replace a catcher, an infielder to replace an infielder, or an outfielder to replace an outfielder. 

6. Any player on the Disqualified List, Ineligible List, Voluntary Retired List, or Restricted List as of midnight (Eastern) on August 31st or who is placed on the Disqualified List, Ineligible List, Voluntary Retired List, or Restricted Lisi anytime after midnight (Eastern) on August 31st is ineligible to be included on a post-season Active List that season.  

7. An injured post-season eligible player can (with the approval of the MLB Commissioner) be replaced on his club's LDS, LCS, or World Series Active List by a player who was on an Active List, Reserve List, 60-day DL, or Military List of a minor league affiliate from that organization prior to midnight (Eastern) on August 31st, or by a player who was on the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster), MLB 60-day DL, or Military List prior to midnight (Eastern) on August 31st but who was subsequently sent outright to the minors. The minor league player must remain on an Active List, Reserve List, 60-day DL, or Military List of a minor league affiliate from that organization continously throughout the remainder of the MLB regular season and post-season in order to be eligible to replace an injured post-season eligible player. 

8. A minor league player who replaces an injured post-season eligible player must have his contracted selected and be placed on the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) before he can be placed on the club's post-season Active Roster, and a minor league player cannot replace a post-season eligible player on the club's MLB 40-man roster if the replaced player is on the 60-day DL and the disabled player has not served at least 60 days on the DL. (A different player would have to be removed from the club's MLB 40-man roster to make room for the minor leaguer).

JACOS: First of all, the Cubs will get a replacement player for Jacob Turner, and I think it will probably be Trevor Cahill, although it could be anybody who was on a Cubs minor leagues affiliate's reserve list as of midnight August 31 (like LHRP Ryan Buchter, RHRP Armando Rivero, RHRP Brian Schlitter, or LHRP James Russell). If it's Buchter, Rivero, Schlitter, or Russell, the Cubs would have to open up a slot on the MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) to make room, and then I think the Cubs would probably DFA Tsuyoshi Wada. But I think Turner's replacement will very likely be Cahill.  

As things stand right now, I suspect in the Wild Card game the Cubs will go with one starting pitcher (Arrieta) plus nine relievers (Rondon, Strop, Grimm, Rodney, Rosscup, Wood, Richard, Hunter, and either Motte, Ramirez, Medina, Edwards, Wada, or Hendricks, or else Cahill or whoever replaces Turner), and (presuming they face a RHSP) a starting lineup of Fowler CF, Schwarber LF, Coghlan RF, Rizzo 1B, Bryant 3B, Montero C, Baez 2B, Arrieta P, and Russell SS, plus Soler, Castro, LaStella, Denorfia, Jackson, Ross, and Berry (carried just to PR) on the bench. 

If they get past the WC and into the LDS, the Cubs will need four starting pitchers. Lester would very likely start Game #1 and (if necessary ) Game #5, Hammel starts Game #2, Arrieta starts Game #3, and either Hendricks or Haren starts Game #4 (if necessary), with either Haren or Hammel not on the 25-man roster for the LDS.

I believe the Cubs will carry eight relievers in the LDS (Rondon, Strop, Rodney, Grimm, Richard, Wood, and two from among Motte, Rosscup, Hunter, Ramirez, Edwards, Medina, and Wada, or Cahill or whoever replaces Turner), and 13 position players (Montero, Ross, Schwarber, Rizzo, Castro, Russell, Bryant, Baez, Coghlan, Fowler, Soler, and two of three from among Denorfia, Jackson, and LaStella) .

The Cubs will keep the eligible guys who aren't active for the LDS (probably Haren or Hendricks, the six relievers who aren't on the LDS Active List, plus Berry, Herrera, Szczur, Alcantara, and Villanueva, and either Denorfia, Jackson, and/or LaStella on the "back burner" playing "sim" games in Mesa, and that would also include an extra catcher not presently on the 40-man roster (probably Taylor Teagarden) in case two of the three Cubs catchers get hurt during the post-season. Willson Contreras will be playing in the AFL beginning on 10/6, so he could get added to the 40-man roster and be called up if necessary (like if Teagraden elects free-agency after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, which he can do because he was outrighted during the season and elected to defer free-agency until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season).  

IF-OF Emilio Bonifacio and OF-1B Mike Baxter will also probably be on "stand-by" in Mesa in case of injuries to position players during the post-season.

Can't see the Cubs using a 3 man rotation unless they are down 2-1, but even that doesn't get Arrieta a 2nd start. Arrieta would pitch game #3, and if he were to come back for Game #5, that is only 2 days rest and two days short of a normal rest. I could see him relieving in Game#5, but can't see him starting. Lester would also be going on short rest if he comes back for Game #4. I'd expect the plan to be as listed below, but with adjustments depending on series status. #1 Lester #2 Hammel Off Day #3 Arrieta #4 Kendricks (with very short leash and long inning relief at the call) Off #5 Lester

Shame that Cahill is not eligible for post-season, seems to be one of the few relievers pitching well of late.

I'm sure any team hates the prospect of facing Arrieta in a one game series, but this line is just silly. "The Cubs are the sole reason why the Cardinals and Pirates... want no part of that wild-card game." No, The Cards or Pirates wouldn't want to face the Phillies in a one game series either. It is essentially a weighted coin flip and not much more...but sure, the prospect of the Cubs is added incentive to win the division. And no, if I'm the Cubs I'd feel much more in the driver's seat if we won the division and skipped the WC game.

I'm a pretty firm believer that any team can beat any other team in a series, but the prospect of facing Kershaw/Greinke in 4 or 5 of 7 games is frightening. With that said, I like our chances more against them in a 7 game series than I would in 5 games. Cubs/Dodgers would be a ridiculously intriguing NLCS. Arrieta/Lester + our offense vs. Greinke/Kershaw in two of the largest markets would be a dream come true for TBS or whomever is carrying the games.

AZ BOB: Trevor Cahill was not added to the MLB 40-man roster prior to midnight on August 31st. Quintin Berry was, but Cahill was not added uintil September 1st. 

However, the Cubs will be able to replace Jacob Turner (on 60-day DL - had season-ending elbow surgery) on the post-season eligibility list, and Cahill will probably be the replacement player since he is the only player presently on the Cubs 40-man roster who isn't post-season eligible.  

If the Cubs want to replace Turner with somebody other than Cahill, they can do that, but the player would have to have been on a Cubs minor league reserve list as of midnight 8/31, and a player would have to be dropped from the 40 to make room for the replacement player. 

So it would be easy to replace Turner with Cahill, although LHRP Ryan Buchter (who is death on LH hitters) might be the better choice.

So in the long shot chance the Cubs make it to the World Series my girlfriend and I will be renting a hotel room in Chicago on Halloween weekend and I'll be hanging out in a bar near Wrigley Field. I want to reserve a room now before they jack up prices or get filled and I would like suggestions from you all where would be a good place to look for a hotel that won't be too expensive but will allow for relatively easy access to the Wrigley area through an L train, bus, etc.

i wish someone would tell baez now that he's had his big payday he can actually shop around for better tattoo shops to get his ink. at least he's not looking like justin "i love billy koch" miller (RIP) with his 100000 jailhouse liquor party quality tattoos.

    Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

    Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

    The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

    Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
    He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
    Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system

    Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

    Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

    I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

    They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

    I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

    The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

    I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.
