Cardinals @ Cubs: Lynn vs. Haren (Game 147)

The Cubs return to Wrigley for the last homestand of the regular season only two games behind the Pirates.

STL (92-54): RHP Lance Lynn (11-10, 3.17)
CHC (84-61): RHP Dan Haren (9-9, 3.87)
First pitch: 1:20pmCT

Haren had a no-decision in Philly on Sunday, giving up 4 ER and lasting only 3 innings. He’s 1-0 with a 3.60 so far in September. He’s 1-1 with a 2.77 in his two starts against the Cards this year. For his career, the Cardinals are 46-157 (.293) against him. The newly returned Holliday is 8-26 with 3 HR. Molina is 6-16.

Lynn lost in Cinci (6 IP, 3 ER) his last time out. In his three starts against the Cubs this year, he’s 0-3 with a 7.53. Overall, the Cubs are 38-126 (.302) against him. Castro is 13-37. Rizzo is 8-27 with 2 HR.

Go Cubs!

I know there are technically no minor leaguers available for a start, but, are there any minor leaguers available for a start? There must be somebody at Tennessee who can throw better than Haren. Maybe throw Pierce Johnson out there for one game and just see what the hell happens? Can he be worse? I know it's a crazy thought, but I just don't see the Cubs getting far in the playoffs with this rotation. And honestly, I'm ok with that - their record is about 20 games better than I predicted. But now I'm feeling greedy.

I'd be surprised to see Haren on the playoff roster...unless he somehow jumps Hendricks over the last month. Cubs will only carry a 4-man rotation with Arrieta, Lester, Hammel, Hendrick. Hendrick would almost certainly have an extremely short leash with Wood and Cahill in the pen for long relief. With that said, yes, our starting rotation makes me very nervous. Having Hammel pitch game two in a short series is frightening.

This organization believes in slow cooking. They like to braise their pitchers at 200 degrees for eight hours, preferably overnight. By that I mean that there is only one pitcher at Tennessee who is under 23 years old, Pugliese, and he's 22 and got a late call-up. Nobody goes to the majors except via Iowa. By contrast, Jay Jackson and Trey McNutt both pitched for Tennessee at 21. McNutt was in his first full season. Whatever magic they had in their arms earlier, they lost. Theo thinks he knows what happened to them.

Pretty good breakdown, I think. Hate to add insult to literal injury, but Kang's movement on that play was unusual--as if he didn't think Coghlan was going to be sliding into him. Typically the infielder either leaps or steps toward the OF grass on that play. Kang is out in front of the base and then takes an additional step into Coghlan's slide. Really unfortunate injury nonetheless.

Maddon removes Coghlan in the 4th inning with a LHP reliever in and bats Jackson. But with bases loaded, let's La Stella bat against Lefty with Baez, Soler and Bryant on the bench. Not sure I get that one.

Totally agree about the wlks vs. the Cards comments. Their hitting with RISP is stupid. Plus if you give them the slightest opening, they always come through. Like Jhonny Peralta's game...

Other than having an excellent seat in the ballpark, I don't know why Edwards is up with the club. There was not one other guy in the entire system that could have filled a spot for September [and I don't mean Dallas Beeler]?

Totally unacceptable of Rosscup. I pin this on Maddon for over tinkering, Haren had only 51 pitches.

In reply to by blockhead25

Yes but he was not looking good when he got taken out and with the warm and humid day he had some very hard hit balls off him already. Not sure if Rosscup was the right choice to replace him but Haren is someone you have a very short leash with.

Fair enough, I'm watching on gameday so bad call for me to be judging pitching performance. I did see the pitch to Holliday though, and that was really bad. I agree Haren should be on a short leash, but I tend to side with letting him try to get out of it that early in the game with the lead.

Doesn't use Bryant for La Stella with a 1 run lead and bases loaded in the 4th, but does use him with 2 run lead and 1 on in the 6th. Odd.

So Cishek comes in to pitch to Bryant in the sixth. Ideally, he will get two outs and then be pinch-hit for batting second in the seventh. From Maddon's point of view, that burns a pitcher. The way it turned out, Cishek only got one guy out of five and Socolovich had to relieve him in the sixth. Socolovich was then pinch hit for in the top of the seventh. So Maddon burned two pitchers by sending Bryant out to hit. Do you really have the urge to play chess with Maddon every day?

Really glad to see him turning it around, after the awful year he has had -- up until the last 30 days, anyway.

I am so glad to see him do well and not just because it helps the team. He was brought up too early to be the face of some very bad teams and has had to deal with so much sucking around him plus all the inordinate hatred he has gotten. Would have really sucked if the year they finally get good and get to the playoffs he couldn't be a big part of it. Obviously Madden can't play someone just for that reason but it just makes me happy to see it. Plus anytime he wants to destroy the Cardinals is good with me! He'll obviously be in against Lynn in the playoffs if we get that far.

Ah September baseball. Assuming I am counting correctly, currently 35 players have appeared in the game.

Apparently both benchs had been warned previously then The Cardinal way, throw at Rizzo losing 8-3 with your crappiest bullpen pitcher. At least Haren's HBP hit Holliday at the thickest and least used part of his body.

JACOS: I second that the Orrington in Evanston, or the Hilton Garden Inn would be a good call (unless you really want to be in the City). There are, like, one restaurant for every resident - really good stuff too... Purple Line to Howard - transfer to red to Addison.

WHOOPS! That was for JOHANN. SORRY. Johann...stay in Evanston for the World Series.

In reply to by johann

Actually JOHANN, I was sitting back a half-hour ago, and the 9/6New York Times just so happened to do a little feature in their Travel Section on just what I was talking about..

who is this Ramirez guy? I'm watching TV and I see the ball being thrown to the catcher but I don't see anyone on the mound.

If not for the 3 games Strop blew in the 8th and 9th against the Cardinals, Cubs and Cardinals would be tied, with Pittsburg 1.5 back. Ha, guess it doesn't quite work this way.

Man, I hate the Cardinals. They need some more "Competitive Balance" picks. Maybe they can have a full Cards draft where they get every pick in a round. Dicks...

In reply to by John Beasley

Nice. I don't want the Cubs hitting Cardinal's batters or getting into a brawl and risking injuries or suspensions but I do love seeing them play with an edge against them. Cardinals team does nothing but whine and complain the whole game.

[ ]

In reply to by johann

Agree, I'd rather it stop right there. Cubs are doing just fine as it is now, and no reason to continue something potentially into October. We are still young, and I worry the Cardinals will know how to handle us getting under their skin better than vice versa. But yes, the fire from Maddon is great to see. He has picked up a lot of enemies in PIT & STL the past two post game conferences.

Fangraphs bumped up the playoff odds to 100%. If the Giants win out their schedule, the Cubs only need to go 8-7 to beat them outright. I hope the clinch is a week from today against Pittsburgh.

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

Basically a sure thing, but I won't be completely relaxed until we clinch. I am definitely more worried about catching the Pirates than looking behind. A sweep would make things interesting for the final 2 weeks regarding the division. STL has a cake schedule after us, so incredibly unlikely (and impossible if we don't sweep), but that would be pretty damn awesome if the final weekend decides the division.

[ ]

In reply to by blockhead25

Cubs tied with the Cards on the final day of the season. Do we pitch Arrieta, even if knowing STL wins their game they win the division due to tie-breaker? I think it is a no brainer to pitch Arrieta if the Cubs were up by 1 game on the Cards on the final day...but tied would be interesting. Of course, there is about a 1% chance of Cubs winning the division, so a silly thought...but fun.

[ ]

In reply to by blockhead25

No way. Arrieta pitches either the Wild Card game or, on the so-slight chance the Cubs win the division, Game 1 of the NLDS. No f'ing way he pitches in Milwaukee the final weekend. Also, if the Cubs are still in it for the division when they get to Milwaukee, imagine how Cubs-crazy that building is going to be.

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

If the Cubs are up 1 game on the Cardinals going into Sunday, then the Milwaukee game is in effect the WC game except against a team 20+ under .500. If the Cubs win, they win the division and bypass the WC. That would mean Milwaukee would have to beat Arrieta AND Pit would have to beat Lester for the Cubs not to make the division series. Of course, this is theoretical nonsense since Cubs won't gain 7 games on the Cards in the final 14.

Cubs tied for 3rd best record in baseball. Have to think that is the first time that 3 teams in one division are top 3 in baseball in September, even in the 4 division alignment.

One game behind Pirates.... Five back of Cards. Going to be an interesting two weeks.

Players on the 40 can be recalled and be placed on the MLB Taxi Squad for one day, like for example if a club is unsure if a player might or might not be placed on the IL ("game time decision"). Like maybe Happ, for example.

Also, a player on the MLB Taxi Squad must be returned to his optional assignment the next day if he is not officially recalled to the 26-man roster.

The player is NOT paid at the MLB split rate and does NOT accrue MLB Service Time while he is on the Taxi Squad. Also, it is not considered to be an official recall / option back if he is not added to the 26-man roster.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Wesneski has not spent 15 days on optional assignment since he was optioned so he cannot be recalled unless he is replacing a player being placed on the IL or other MLB inactive list (Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical, et al), a player who is traded, or a player who is claimed off waivers.

excited to see more power in the lineup.

HOU going with 3 righty starters vs the cubs and their only lefty pen arm is hader.

unless busch has a mystery injury, we should see busch+mervis working all 3 games.

More than 50 years ago (I'm old), I was in the audience when my HS choir performed the whole thing. (It was a really elite choir and director.) That was my first exposure to the piece. You're right, Sonicwind75, there is a lot more to it than "O Fortuna," just like there's a lot more to Beethoven's Ninth than the Ode to Joy, etc. Much if it, as you say, is bawdy: "O! O! Totus florio! Iam amori virginali, totus ardeo!" Basically, "I'm really horny for these virgins!" And the guys in the choir adopted the "Skoal"- type greeting from the tavern scene: "Wafna!"

  • crunch (view)

i would have pause if the cubs had a pitching squeeze.   as it is, they have more guys than they have roster.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Maybe Brewer

He'd be able to leave the Cubs. He's out of options. That would open up a 40man spot.

I don't think Jed would do that.

  • crunch (view)

brewer has done nothing to keep him on the big league roster...imagine that's 1 guy gone.

yeah, it's only 2 appearances, but they were both unimpressive.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Yeah it is.....sorry......closers don't throw 89mph

It would be unique for sure.

But CP can't be HR susceptible

That's what Alzolay has right now and that's what Kyle has no matter the situation.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Supposedly Happ said on a radio show he's good to go

I hadn't read that anywhere from the usual accounts, so this could be off.

    If true, Canario goes down.

Hmmm. Maybe my idea of transitioning Hendricks into a closer role isn’t so crazy.
