Brewers @ Cubs: Peralta vs. Hammel (Game 150)

The Cardinals take their toys and go home.

MIL (63-86): RHP Wily Peralta (5-9, 4.41)
CHC (87-62): RHP Jason Hammel (8-6, 3.73)
First pitch: 7:05pmCT

Hammel had a short outing (3.2 IP, 4 ER) and a no-decision in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. He’s 2-0 with a 2.59 in his four starts against Milwaukee this season. Braun is 8-23 with 2 HR.

Peralta missed over two months with a strained oblique. He lost to the Cubs (6 IP, 1 ER) in May at Wrigley. The Cubs are 40-108 (.370) against him. Rizzo is 12-26 with 5 HR (and a 1.649 OPS). Castro is 12-27 with 2 HR.

The Cubs are 9-4 against the Brewers so far this year.

Go Cubs!

OK, Jason -- it's all set up for you, big guy. It's the effin' Brewers, and Braun isn't playing -- piece of cake. To put it simply -- Jason Hammel really sucks at pitching. These guys shouldn't score 2 runs in 20 innings, much less one.

Jason Hammels sucks post-injury. Fortunately he will not be on the team next year.

I love to watch Soler swing the bat. Scored 9 runs, and left a lot more out there. Hope Scharber and Russell get going again soon.

It really does feel this offense can compete with anyone and stay in or claw back in any game. With that said, there are still some fundamental problems heading into the playoffs. 3-13 with RISP, too many K's with less than 1 out and runner at 3rd. 3 errors, all pretty routine plays questionable baserunning. Rizzo would have been easily out with no-outs at home if the catcher held the ball, Castro broke for home with a swinging bunt right at the pitcher, and Fowler almost cost a run by trying to grab 2nd on a close play. Finally, what the heck are the cubs going to do with the pitching staff if they make the NLDS or NLCS? Is Hammel really going to pitch game 2 with a 6+ ERA in the 2nd half?

I don't know how much you watch the other MLB teams, but all of the good teams (all 5) have various holes: rotation after #2, bullpen, loogies, offense, poor team obp, K's, team D, etc. You are looking at this team as if it is a veteran squad with no problems. Grab a hold of yourself and realize that half the team was born when you were in college, or after! They are way over their heads, and don't know it. I really didn't think they would even get into the Playoffs this year! Joe Maddon has made an incredible difference getting out of all of them what he could. So, enjoy what there is to enjoy, suffer what there is to suffer. This team is competing with the best teams in baseball for 2015. Just sit back and enjoy it.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and no. I agree with all your points, but you are also missing mine. I am loving every minute of the season, but the reason I come here is to engage, discuss, and debate with others on things I have absolutely no control of and little knowledge of. I have no real expectations that they haven't already blown away. With that said, it would be pretty awesome if the Cubs make it to the World Series...so why not use this to talk about the flaws as well as what we already know is great?

And no, not just bitching. This team is incredibly fun to watch and this is a truly memorable season no matter what...but time to get greedy and hope the big weaknesses facing the Cubs in the playoffs sort themselves out. Still think home field is critical for WC game.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
