Wow. Wow!

That was easily the best and most significant win of the season. It’s the kind of game that makes you think the Cubs might actually play more than four games in October. 

Now let’s do some real damage. 

Lackey gave up 2 ER in 4.2 innings for a no-decision against the Cardinals on Friday. He’s 1-2 with a 3.79 in three starts against the Brewers this season. Overall, the Brewers are 38-152 (.250) against him. Braun is 10-34 with 3 HR*.

The 24y/o Mississipian rookie Woodruff is making his seventh start. His last was a win in Miami (7 IP, 3 ER, 5 K, 0 BB). Righties are 11-73 (.151) against him, but we’ll have to wait to see what Maddon’s iPad has to say about that.

Tomorrow it’s Hendricks (7-5) and Suter (3-2) at 12:05pmCST.

CTSteve -- truthful but understated description of Lackey's last outing. A possible enhancement: Lackey gave up 2 ER in 4.2 innings for a no-decision against the Cardinals on Friday -- at which point he went bat-shit crazy and almost went Hannibal Lecter on the umpire.

Tseng and Zastryzny better be ready to get 6 outs each today. My hunch is that Mike Freeman plays, and Willson doesn't start.

Wade's had trouble throwing strikes at times this year, which is strange for him. Other than that, he's every bit as unhittable as he was with the Royals. Unless his contract demands are crazy level, absolutely the Cubs should re-sign him. 4/55? Or, 3/45 with an option? Yes please.

@E-man... I am not at all opposed to resigning Davis to a 3 year extension if he would agree to it. I don't know if 3/$48M would get it done. Yes it's probably a discount, but it would be a remarkable salary to stay with a team where he's comfortable and allows the team to spend money elsewhere as needed, and the window should remain wide open during that timespan to win more championships. I'm also wondering if anyone knows (AZ Phil) exactly how the qualifying offer works as far as can a team extend the QO, and at the same time still be in talks with the player for a longer term contract during that period where the player has to respond to the QO? I guess my point is I'd be happiest if the Cubs made the QO and Davis accepts it. But if he wants to turn it down and get just a couple more extra years from the Cubs, I'm completely ok with that too.

As you know, closer and starting rotation are question marks going into 2018. The FA starter candidates blow, except for Jake (and he knows it), and I don't think that the Cubs are ready to anoint CJ as the closer. Maybe - but not a slam dunk by any means. So yeah, it would be cool if we could get both Wade and Jake back on shorter, lucrative deals. Its gonna be very interesting folks...

They won't keep Jake, you can forget about that one. Much more likely option: Alex Cobb. The Cubs FO loves him for some reason, he's only an MOR pitcher, but the contract would be easier to swallow than what Jake's gonna get. I think the FO wants to save their $$ ammo for next winter.

I trust that before free agency starts Theo will have a max salary number and a max contract duration in mind for Jake. I fully believe that at least one of the other 29 front offices will offer Jake something so outlandish that Theo will gladly or sadly say no thanks and wish Jake well. Cubs will then have 3 certain starters (Lester, Hendricks, and Quintana) and one guy they hoped would work in the rotation this year (Montgomery) that they will hope again on doing the same next year. I'm not thrilled about Lackey coming back, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. I expect the Cubs will sign some other MOR starter to a stock number contract and then let things sort out through the ASB. Things going the way they seem to there will be one pleasant surprise (maybe Zastryzny or Tseng will blossom) and one dark cloud (something like Lester will be bad Lester more often).

LRB: A club can continue to negotiate with a player for a long-term deal after extending a Qualifying Offer. 

The deadline to extend a QO is 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series.  

Also, beginning this year players will now have ten days (up from seven days) to decide whether to accept a QO, and a player cannot receive a QO more than once in his career (so John Lackey cannot receive a QO post-2017, not that he was likely to get one). 
 
The post-2017 QO is expected to be about $18M+ (the average salary of the 125 highest player salaries from the 2017 season), The exact QO figure must be announced by MLB within ten days after the conclusion of the MLB regular season.

The QO contract offered by a club to a player must be a one-year 100% guaranteed Major League UPC and cannot include performamnce bonuses or deferred money. A player who signs a QO contract after 11:59 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series also receives a full "no-trade" through June 15th.

Thanks Phil. It's almost like the best case scenario (but won't happen) would be if both Arrieta and Davis accepted the QO, and both pitch great in 2018 and then move on to other teams for 2019 with great contracts.

LRB: Jake Arrieta has already dismissed the idea of accepting a QO post-2017 as absolutely ridiculous, and although Wade Davis hasn't said anything about a QO, I would think the only way he signs one is if he gets hurt sometime before the end of the World Series.   

I suspect Wade Davis would probably want something similar to what Mark Melancon got from the Giants last off-season (Melancon got a four-year $62M deal with a player opt-out after two years and a full "no trade" for the length of the contract), and I just can't see the Cubs going there.

The Cubs have re-signed RHRP Jose Rosario to a 2018 minor league contract. (Rosario was released earlier this month).

OK, Joe, let's fall back on some hard numbers: Zobrist at leadoff: .760 OPS, 157 AB Zobrist at cleanup: .592 OPS, 172 AB I mean, seriously, what the hell are you thinking? The notion that Zobrist provides "protection" for Rizzo is simply laughable.

I feel a little bad for the Brewers. Not just to lose, but to lose these first two in extras and in part as a result of close plays that could have been called either way--that's rough.

JFC, will someone explain to Maddon that Martin was released by Seattle for a reason? HE CAN'T HIT. You want to use him as a PR and defensive replacement, fine. But if it's a critical situation and his spot in the order comes around, you hit for him. Every time. Christ, pinch hit Arrieta, he's more dangerous with a bat in his hand than Martin. Yet Maddon has let him hit now in at least 3 game-critical situations, and each time it's been a laughable fail. TLS OTOH, if that dude ain't hurt, I want him pinch hitting every damn game. Love his ABs.

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
