Cubs @ Cardinals: Lester vs Weaver (Game 156)

CHC (87-68): LHP Jon Lester (11-8, 4.56)
STL (81-74): RHP Luke Weaver (7-1, 2.05)
First pitch: 7:15pmCST

Lester didn’t have it on Wednesday, giving up 7 ER in 4.1 innings in Tampa. He’s 1-1 with a 3.28 in his three starts against the Cards this season. Overall, they are 38-171 (.222) against him. Molina is 12-32 with a HR.

Weaver made his MLB debut against the Cubs late last season (4 IP, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 BB). Now he’s back—and for good, it would seem. The kid can pitch. He’s won his last 6 straight, including his last outing in Cincinnati.

The Cubs are 4-12 (.333) against him. Baez, Rizzo, and Zobrist have hits; Russell took him deep.

Today could be the day! The magic number is 2.

Arrieta (14-9) and Martinez (12-11) go tomorrow at 7:00pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Comments

CT Steve -- well, it could be the day to KO the Cards. But the Brewers don't play, so the best the Cubs can do is lower the magic number to 1 against them.

The NLDS clincher at home was fucking incredible. But to clinch a division in St. Louis? Priceless!

Brewers v. Reds starts on Tuesday a half-hour before Cubs-Cards. So, the Cubs WILL have a chance to celebrate on the field--instead of in the clubhouse--since they should know the outcome of the Brewers game before their own game finishes.

great piece (eno does great stuff, imo) but i can't imagine lester being bounced from the post-season rotation no matter what he does tonight as long as he's healthy. montgomery deserves it more (especially with his 2nd-half numbers), but that fight is most likely between montgomery and lackey for the 4th slot. that said, this point is a minor part of the larger point of the article.

this game is neat-o. 32 pitches and 4 runs given up in the 1st for STL.

Great start. Couldn't ask for a better stadium, team, and day for this kind of start to go down. Drink up that Budweiser, Cardinals fans... Edit: perhaps I should've waited to see how Lester's pitching before making my statement.

RIP WEAVER'S ERA :) 8-1 in the top 3rd...it's 2016 as hell up in here.

Throwing Baez a ball that isn't in the dirt with 2 outs and Lester on deck? Matheny must've bet the over.

Carrie Muskat‏ @CarrieMuskat #Cubs Russell just went over and posed for a selfie with the nachos guy

They showed the fans who lost their nacho box when Addison Russell fell into the stands. Russell comes out to serve them a replacement, then they show Trib's Paul Sullivan there to interview the fans. Sullivan was sitting but Len/JD questions whether he was standing up. Gotta love short people humor on TV. Cue Randy Newman...

molina is getting beat the hell up behind the plate. yow...he had to stop to lean over and spit/puke a bit after taking 2 consecutive foul balls to the dome in a row. i'd be surprised to see him for the rest of the series.

well f#@!@!@#k... baez just fouled the hell out of one off the top of his knee. he's been on the ground for a minute or so now. trainer out. baez jogging! woo. he's gonna stay in the game, too. dunno if he'll play the field after the AB, but woo. ...and he hits a single. ...and a pinch runner in. baez is limping off the field.

cubs win! cards eliminated from the division (still in the WC chase). magic number is 1.

What a great way to finish off the Cards. A laugher in their ballpark, where their best player was Nacho Man. Cubs now 12-4 against the Cards this year, and have gone 11-2 since the scary sweep by the Brewers, including 7-1 vs. the Brewers and the Cards. Well done, boys!

last year's cards playoff exclusion down to the wire was nice. getting this close again and not making it would also be nice. im not from the midwest so the whole cubs/cards thing doesn't mean as much to me, but seeing the cards get this close only to get denied in the last week of the season in back-to-back years would be awesome nonetheless.

Gotta be rough for Dexter to watch if the Cubs clinch on the field. Going from a fun team with a goofy-fun-hipster manager to the no-fun, huge-watch wearing (why?), self-important Matheny. But hey, $82 million is $82 million.

WTH, Marwin Gonzalez, really? This dude was a utility infielder in the Cubs system, and not a particularly impressive one at that. Have you seen his numbers with the Astros? How does that happen?

Nice lefty-hitting shortstop with a little pop. I liked him. His lack of speed on the bases held him back as a prospect. I once went to a Smokies home game and he homered. That team was supposedly loaded--Trey McNutt was the starter that day--but only Gonzalez and to a lesser extent Flaherty became major leaguers.

He was a perfectly usable ss at the Double-A/Triple-A level, before the Astros Rule 5'd him. They had been using Clint Barmes at SS, and would use Jed Lowrie in 2012. After two mildly shaky years, he found his footing, and became a goof two-way player. Which happens. The Cubs had Darwin Barney and Starlin Castro in front, and Junior Lake behind. Toss in a Marco Hernandez, and the Cubs had some middle-infield depth then. If a player gets better, then the credit goes to him. Players develop on their time line, not ours.

"Players develop on their time line, not ours." That's a lot of goddamn nerve!

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
