Pirates @ Cubs: Liriano vs. Hammel (Game 154)

Pinched--then clinched.

PIT (94-60): LHP Francisco Liriano (11-7, 3.41)
CHC (89-64): RHP Jason Hammel (9-6, 3.79)
First pitch: 12:05pmCT

Hammel got the unglorious win (5 IP, 3 ER) against the Brewers on Monday. In his three starts against the Pirates this year, he's 1-1 with a 3.78, and they are hitting him at only a .234 clip. Overall, Snider is 5-11 with 2 HR. McCutchen is 8-28 with 2 HR.

Liriano won against the Dodgers his last time out (7 IP, 2 ER). Against the Cubs in April, he gave up 3 ER in 5 innings but walked away with a no-decision in a game the Cubs would go on to win 9-8.

Congrats to the Cubs on clinching a playoff berth, which is looking more and more like what we suspected/hoped for back in July: a win-or-go-home game in Pittsburgh.

Go Cubs!

according to some people here you shouldn't be asking that question because blind faith and quiet acceptance is the only way to support this team (unless dusty is managing, then you get to joke about it or question it every single day). that said, why the hell does he keep hitting 1st or 2nd? that's my big problem with the whole thing and i'd like to know more about what makes maddon do this...his reasoning. seems like he'd be a hell of a 7-9 hitter to stash in the back if you gotta play him.

Brief hope about Hammel...quickly crushed by a bomb by the #8 hitter. Five straight hits. Gonna be a weird celebration in the clubhouse.

n.ramirez's command is still too iffy, but it's nice to see him throwing 93-94mph again. before he went on the DL he was tossing too much 90-92 stuff.

it's not official, but catching PIT at this point is kinda moot. meh, but *shrug* i'm not really sweating a 1-game playoff being a home or away game. a single game is random enough...at least arrieta gets to pitch that game.

i know these guys aren't exactly experienced veterans of celebrating (except d.ross), but i am cringing like hell seeing all these dudes shaking up and uncorking champagne bottles pointing at body and head level of their teammates.

Not sure I like the fact the Cubs have nothing to play for in the last 8 days of the season. Reminds me of 2008 when they took the last 2 weeks off and completely lost their edge. Would be wild, if after all this, the Cubs end up playing the Cardinals in the WC game. Not sure that's a bad thing though.

the zito/hudson (probable last regular season game for both) matchup fell flat on it's face and their pens didn't help. hudson - 1.1ip 1h 3bb 0k, 3r/2er zito - 2ip 6h 1bb 0k, 4r/er

Going to be a weird 8 days -- Cubs games don't matter, no reason to scoreboard watch. Hope they use the week to get the offense going again.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
