Royals @ Cubs: Ventura vs. Hendricks (Game 156)

The Royals are in for a quickie.

KC (90-65): RHP Yordano Ventura (12-8, 4.40)
CHC (90-65): RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-7, 4.23)
First pitch: 7:05pmCT

Hendricks took the loss (6 IP, 3 ER) against the Brewers on Wednesday. He’s 1-1 with a 4.79 in September, to continue his disappointing season. He’d be a perfectly serviceable 4th-5th starter, if we didn’t already have 4-5 other ones just like him. Only Gomes (0-1) has faced him.

Ventura had a no-decision against Seattle (6 IP, 3 ER) his last time out. He had a no-decision (7 IP, 1 ER) against the Cubs when the Royals were in town for their series in a game the Cubs won 2-1. The Cubs are 10-36 (.278) against him. Coghlan is 3-3. Ross is 1-2 with a HR.

This is a make-up game from the rainout on May 30th. It’s the last time we’ll see an AL team this year. Or is it..?

Go Cubs!

Well what if, god forbid, Rizzo gets hurt? Coghlan played there a few times but if I remember right he didn't look very good. Might as well see if someone else can play effectively in games that don't mean anything while also giving Rizzo a very needed day off.

Great point, and I'm, sure that's exactly why Maddon is doing that. But, I still don't like it. Don't really care about winning today, but don't think it is wise to take your 2nd best offensive threat and throw him in a position that is completely out of whack and backwards for him. I only took this opinion after I saw them coaching Bryant on wear to stand for pick-off throws. OK...I'm done with my arguments here. Very small issue in the scheme of things.

If a steal does not count due to fielder indifference, does a perfect game not count due to manager indifference?

ventura throwing a f'n perfect game through 5 (with 4K and 57 pitches thrown). damn. c'mon scrubbies.

Stephen Piscotty carted off the field after a collision in the outfield in Pittsburgh - was knocked unconscious after taking a knee to the head. Regained consciousness and waved to the crowd on his back while coming off the field

Cards now 4 up on PIT with 5 to play -- alas, it is mathematically impossible for them to be tied at the end of the season.

Greinke started off pretty poorly, looking like he may hand the Cy Young to Arrieta. Ended up going 7IP with 2 ER to keep a notable gap in ERA and add another quality start. And the Dodgers just saved him a loss by scoring in the 9th. Still think Grienke has it on numbers, but Arrieta may have earned it based on the historical end run and the high profile ESPN games.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
