Wild Card Roster Predictions

Reports have indicated that the Cubs are toying with either a 16-9 or 15-10 position players to pitchers roster for the Wild Card game. Here's my quick take on the likely roster:

C: Miguel Montero
C: David Ross
1B: Anthony Rizzo
2B: Starlin Castro
IF: Javier Baez
IF: Tommy La Stella
SS: Addison Russell
3B: Kris Bryant
OF: Dexter Fowler
OF: Kyle Schwarber
OF: Chris Coghlan
OF: Jorge Soler
OF: Austin Jackson
OF: Chris Denorfia
OF: Quintin Berry

I think these are relatively undisputed, especially given Maddon's comment that Berry would likely be on the roster. If they add a 16th position player, it would probably be Jonathan Herrera over Matt Szczur, given the glut of OF's they already have and the fact that Bryant can shift out there if needed.

SP: Jake Arrieta
RP: Hector Rondon
RP: Pedro Strop
RP: Jutin Grimm
RP: Travis Wood
RP: Trevor Cahill
RP: Fernando Rodney

I would guess those 7 are set. The final 2-3 slots, however, are a bit more complicated. I would guess Tommy Hunter has an inside track for one of them. Clayton Richard might have another. Perhaps Zac Rosscup is added as a LOOGY. Neil Ramirez has also pitched well of late, but in limited action. Finally, the Cubs could add a starter to the Wild Card roster just in case something happens to Arrieta early or the game goes into extras.

no j.herrera is criminal. dude is averaging a HR every 4ab this month even with the high K rate. hot fire!

I'm actually thinking they'll have Lester on the roster in case something bad were to happen to Arietta. In that big a situation they'd want the insurance of the second best pitcher.

Yep -- if Jake takes a line drive off the shin in the 2nd inning, I think you want Lester to come in. By the way -- what's with Travis closing lately? Trying to get him some "high leverage" situations against LH hitters? He has been great in Sept: 14 IP, 1 ER, 6 hits, 4BB and 22K. Keep it rollin'!

I am thinking (hoping) that his shit play in September will get him booted off the NLDS if they should be so lucky to make it. Yesterday on WSCR 670, Joe said they want to play the guys that have not been getting much time in higher leverage situations to see how they react. He mentioned Rosscup, Edwards, et. al., specifically. But, Jackson has to be on that list too I would think. Give me Ceasar instead of him. Well, AJax may have reversed the above for Joe. I need to dis players more often so they immediately respond accordingly.

I don't really get the whole Quintin Berry thing on a do or die game roster. Szczur can probably run the bases just about as well. Berry almost got picked off the other day, it was very close, and he got thrown out in a high leverage game trying to steal. Yeah it was his first of the year caught stealing but it was high leverage. Szczur hasn't proven anything yet in a high leverage situation that I can recall, but he's at least got a little bit of a bat. At the same time, I'm not losing a lot of sleep over any of this.

Cubs went 38-18 in August and September. Damn. Guess all that day baseball really wore them out...

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
