Cubs @ Pirates: Arrieta vs. Cole (Game 163; NL Wild Card Game)

This is it--one game, four years in the making.

CHC (97-65): RHP Jake Arrieta (22-6, 1.77)
PIT (98-64): RHP Gerrit Cole (19-8, 2.60)
First pitch: 7:00pmCT

Arrieta is 3-1 with a 0.75 in his five starts against the Pirates this year--that is, 3 ER in 36 innings. They are batting .151 with no HRs in those games. He’s 2-0 with a 0.82 in the three games at PNC. For his career, these Pirates are 31-176 (.176) against him. McCutchen is the only real threat (8-23, .348).

Cole is 2-1 with a 2.13 in four games against the Cubs this year, three of which were at Wrigley. They are batting .225 against him. The Cubs are 36-126 (.286) against him, overall: Fowler (3-14, .214), Schwarber (1-5, .200), Bryant (3-9, .333), Rizzo (6-17, .353), LaStella (1-6, .167), Castro (6-17, .353), Montero (3-5, .600), and Russell (2-7, .286).

Arrieta has not pitched in the postseason. Cole pitched twice in the NLDS in 2013, going 1-1 with a 2.45 against the Series-bound Cardinals. (He won Game 2 and lost Game 5.)

If the Cubs win, they’ll play in St. Louis on Friday. If they lose, they’ll be playing in March in Arizona.

Parachat will be happening--leave your shoes and sense of decorum at the door.

Go Cubs!

I love arriving here first thing in the morning, adding a few moronic posts (moranic for any Cardinals fans who may be trolling), and reading the sage posts of all you guys. Most knowledgeable fans on any forum, by far. So post like crazy today and help give TCR some visibility! I told my wife last night that I'm going to need a support system for tonight's game. Tonight is going to be a lot harder on me than it is going to be on these rookie bad asses.

Woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep in excitement/anticipation. Go Cubs Go!

Good Lord this season has flown by so far. I need more Cubs gifs--the four on the MLB.com article today are not enough. I need a 100 best moments of the season listicle of gifs. Rizzo: The slide, the catch. Russell: All the defense. Bryant: Pelting the video board. Soler: 125 MPH ground balls. Schwarber: DINGERS, surprising LF catches. Fowler: Walks, the many walks he should have had on 3-2 BS strike calls. Baez: That 3B play. Ross: Walk-up music? Bullpen appearance? Denorfia: Walk-off. Castro: Walk-offs. Herrera: Gum bucket hat. Strop: Pitch rhythm assortments and high-stepping. Arrieta: The whole season. Super cut of Ks. His two HRs. Hammel: Early season hitting. Coghlan: Various SMDH responses to umpires. etc. etc. Lots of stuff to remember about this season so far.

CHEERS to CT Steve for keeping this alive in 2015. Who would have thought that the season would have been so successful to this point? Thank you CT STEVE! I think I may be too nervous to watch the entire game. I will probably watch in bits and pieces - and constantly check MLB App. I will be like Blockhead: Nervous Nellie.

I can relate to that, E-Man. I don't think I'll enjoy watching a high-stakes away game like this on TV. I've watched a lot of games this season after they ended or at least after the Cubs got out to a decent lead. Since they usually win, I've gotten to see a lot of baseball. But in this case I think we should probably all watch the game live, and not let the pressure exceed the pleasure.

Yes, cheers to me! I've noticed a fairly strong correlation between my tenure and Cubbie victories.

And thanks to Michael for our new diggs--and to y'all for sticking around!

Which means if you shut this place down, and the Cubs go back to their old ways, we will all have to hunt you down, kidnap you, and strap you to a chair to listen to Tim McCarver and Joe Buck repeatedly, with dollops of Hawk Harrelson thrown in for good measure.

Sports symmetry in Chicago tonight -- Cubs begin what will hopefully be an extended period of playoff appearances; Blackhawks open their season by raising their 3rd championship banner in 6 years. Similar models -- years of badness, built a young core and got a good coach -- here's hoping. Also -- the city has added a bunch of cops around Wrigley, anticipating a small-scale riot if the Cubs win. I am excited and nervous, but, I mean, It's a Wild Card game.

Cubs players, coaches, instructors, trainers, and staff attending instructs will be watching the game as a group in the auditorium at the Under Armour Performance Center at Riverview Park in Mesa this evening (starting at 5 PM Arizona time).

A number of scouts and members of the Cubs Player Development Department will also be there.

The instructs schedule was changed from the normal morning workout to an afternoon workout, with everybody invited to stay late for pizza and to watch Cubs baseball on an EXTREMELY large screen TV.

The players seemed unusually stoked & animated during baserunning & bunting drills this afternoon, and Eloy Jimenez hit at least seven 450+ foot bombs onto the roof of the UAPC beyond the LF fence on Field #3 during BP.

So as you're watching the game tonight, think about the 150+ screaming Cub fans at Riverview Park who are joining you in cheering on their team.

Very fun PHIL. In some way, I am sure you are seeing some of your "kids" out there in the National. Prime-Time spotlight. I hope they can keep it going past tonight. I always think of your opinion on Castro being a better 2nd baseman. Quite a turnaround for the kid this year.

Good luck tonight Cubbies! I won't be here for everyone's play by play, but I am with y'all in spirit. Or spirits.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
