Bums Score with Extra-Base Hits at Fitch Park

Jeremy Rathjen blasted a solo home run, Chris O’Brien belted an RBI triple, Scott Wingo laced an RBI double, and 2012 1st round draft pick (18th overall) Corey Seager doubled, scored a run, drove-in another, and stole a base, leading the Dodgers to a 6-2 victory over the Cubs in Arizona Instructional League action this afternoon at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa.

The Cubs scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the 4th, piecing together three consecutive one-out singles by Albert Almora, Jorge Soler, and Dan Vogelbach, and a Marco Hernandez sacrifice fly, to plate two runs.

RHP Jose Arias got the start for the Cubs and had another strong outing, tossing three innings of shutout ball (39 pitches - 30 strikes), allowing two hits and no walks, while striking out three. Arias has probably been the most-impressive Cub pitcher at Instructs so far this year.

RHP Steve Perakslis followed Arias to the hill and got plastered pretty good in his 1.2 IP of work, allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits (two doubles, a triple, and a home run) and a walk.

RF Jorge Soler made two outstanding run-saving diving catches in the game, both while running at full speed to his right.

    Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.  

     

    At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

    masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

    I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

    That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

    Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.
