Indians @ Cubs: Tomlin vs Hendricks (Game 175; World Series Game 3)

Indians 1, Cubs 0
W: Tomlin (3-0); L: Hendricks (1-2); S: Allen (5)
Indians lead series: 2-1PREVIEW
CLE (1-1): RHP Josh Tomlin (2-0, 2.53)
CHC (1-1): RHP Kyle Hendricks (1-1, 1.65)
First pitch: 6:05pmCST

Hendricks went 7.1 innings of shutout ball to beat Kershaw and the Dodgers in Game Six of the NLCS on Saturday at Wrigley to send the Cubs to the World Series. Crisp, the only Indian to face Hendricks, is 0-3.

Tomlin (13-9, 4.40 in the regular season) beat Toronto in Game Two of the NLCS, giving up 1 ER in 5.2 innings. He also won in Boston (5 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) to complete the sweep of the Red Sox in the NLDS. Only three Cubs have faced him: Montero is 2-5, Zobrist is 2-19 (Ben?), and Ross is 0-1.

Kluber on short rest versus Lackey fresh out of the stable for Game Four Saturday at 7:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Comments

Gotta like this pitching matchup for the Cubs, especially with the wind supposedly blowing out and Tomlin not much for the strikeouts usually.

Winds gusting up to 30 mph from the SW tonight at Wrigley. My heart racing at 100 mph trying to make it through work today.

Fowler CF, Bryant 3B, Rizzo 1B, Zobrist LF, Contreras C, Soler RF, Baez 2B, Russell SS, Hendricks P

Manfred was on Waddle and Silvy and the important highlights: 1). He said he likes the arguments that the difference in the DH rules creates and made it seem like he doesn't want to change it 2). He said pace of play has slipped backwards and this year has been a learning experience. Said he wants to create mechanisms to keep players focused and that there should be an outer limit on replay times. Said 2 minutes seems like a good time frame for them. 3). Said the home field advantage from the All Star game served its purpose to enhance interest in it but that it had a shelf life. Said discussions to change it are on the table and he seemed much more open to it changing than the last time he was on the show.

can't imagine too many NL clubs are interested in letting Cubs have a DH in the near future...at least not with an ample amount of time for them to plan accordingly.

Sigh

Next year problems...but Cubs gonna have actual problems having enough spots for guys, although it all tends to work itself out.

Rizzo came up short on winning the Roberto Clemente Award unfortunately. Congrats to Curtis Granderson. Now let's take a 2-1 series lead. Go Cubs Go! #FlyTheW @Rob G Schwarber, Soler, Heyward, Almora Jr, Szczur, Fowler? is an OF logjam. I think Soler and/or Szczur gets traded this offseason. I think that a Soler trade during this season would have definitely been in play if Schwarber didn't tear his ACL.

Apparently Schwarber is the entirety of the offense. Team and the crowd need to get their collective heads out of their ass.

Interesting takes on the crowd. I was at the game and the energy level was consistently high throughout the game. Roars for every strike the Cubs pitchers threw, roars for every ball the Cubs hitters took. The place literally rocked after each big out and for each hit the Cubs got. As dreary as the game was, there was a fair amount of tense moments and the crowd was into it. We were all desperately waiting for something--anything--to get excited about. Roaring for the odd ball three count on a Cub hitter was about it. Might have played differently on tv since they have a tendency to muffle the crowd noise.

Pitcher's spot due up 2nd in the bottom of the 8th. I would be extremely surprised if Schwarber doesn't come up.

Chapman's fastball velocity down or FOX radar gun wrong? Luckily he was still dominant. Rally cap on now, bot 9, down 1.

The Indians basically gave the Cubs two runners at 3rd. Cubs couldn't get either one in. Ouch. The bloom seems to be off the Baez rose for now. Need to score early against Kluber tomorrow.

I knew it was going to be either a slider in the dirt or a high fastball. Time to use that two strike approach and shorten up enough to be able to spot which it's going to be. All he needed to do was fight off the close ones and punch it up the middle. Baseball -- as soon as you're flying high, the game will bring you back down. I'm looking at you, Javy.

Pretty amazing pitching on both sides -- wind blowing out, and I can't remember a ball even hit near the warning track.

4 Keys tonight: Edwards pitches 2 innings in the World Series (young), poor plate discipline by Russell/Javy (young), Schwards coulda PH'd in the 9th (on Maddon), great Tribe pitching. I am in the House Saturday and Sunday. Would love to see one WS Win at home in my lifetime. CUBSTER also in da house! Anyone else?

Heyward is a much better baserunner and faster. He was brought in case of a ball in the dirt/wild pitch. And Soler would have been out at home by 75 feet even if he busted it from the get go and they sent him, which they wouldn't have.

Soler got 2 of the 5 hits and an outfield assist and people are on him tonight. Fans are weird.

I want Soler back out there tonight. I also want Rizzo to back off the plate a couple inches against Kluber and Schwarber to do thr same if he faces Shaw or any other cutter specialist again. If the Cubs can steal a win tonight, maybe I can let go of some of my fury about losing the Tomlin game.

    agreed and agreed.

he walked off on his own, but we may not find out for a few days how this will impact the club.

Looked like a hamstring rather than a knee, not sure if that’s better or worse.

steele leaves the game with a hamstring or knee injury.  sigh.

...and a madrigal "non-error" leads to a sac fly for a tie game.  nice.

having a ball clank off your glove, but still getting it count as a hit because it was hit hard is a nice stats gift.

For sure. This lineup isn’t exactly stacked as is, and subbing out a Cooper or even a Tauchman for Madrigal won’t do it any favors.

the ESPN bottom graphic taking up 1/8th of the screen sucks.

i only use ESPN during baseball season and i'm forced to watch a baseball broadcast designed to be broadcast in sports bars and betting parlors where the news/scores of other games is as important as what you're actually tuned in to watch.

morel triple to start the season....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.
