Maybe Dusty will figure out how a double-switch works today. Maybe pigs will fly... Go Cubs!!!

Comments

Looks like this game is only being picked up locally. Can't find it.

If D. Lee had been hitting yesterday and today like he did in the first half of the season then the Cubs would be pretty good shape...I know Lee can't always carry the team...Yet, Lee has not been able to come up with timely hits or home runs in the last few games...We don't have Ramirez now and lets hope D. Lee can get hot once again - he deserves it and so do the Cubs fans...;-)

I think Corey Patterson was about 0 for 4 today...Maybe Dusty should have used his little brother (who is batting around 330 on a Cubs franchise team)...One way or another the Cubs MUST get more timely hits. Anyone think we Murton would have helped out today...?

I was disappointed as usual that Baker let Neifi and Korey bat after Burnitz doubled with one out in the ninth. Both quickly buried themselves in an 0-2 hole and that was it. Another quality start by Maddux wasted. He has 18 (or thereabouts) starts of 6.0 innings or more and 3 earned runs or less.

Anyone wish the Cubs were able to hold onto Dontrelle Willis (who has 18 wins so far this year)...The Cubs seem to be very good at trading away talent just before it becomes very valuable.

Cubs seem to think the product on the field is good...just having bad luck. They honestly believe they have a good team. I don't think we can even say "Wait 'till next year" with much confidence with that attitude coming from the powers that be in Wrigleyville.

Anyone try to watch today's game in the Chicago area with just an antenna? What is it with FOX 32's reception... it's horrible. Do they broadcast from Peoria? None of the other UHF stations look this bad (you know... 20, 23, 26, 38, 44, 50, 60, 66)

Interesting...Lawton seems to kick into gear as he joins the Yankees...I just received this email from a friend in NYC who is a huge Yankees fan... {...Lawton had a big hit in the ninth today that helped the Yanks rally for 5 runs to overtake the Royals after they had missed an easy double play. It was one of the best come from behind rallies I can remember...}

Anyone wish the Cubs were able to hold onto Dontrelle Willis (who has 18 wins so far this year)...The Cubs seem to be very good at trading away talent just before it becomes very valuable. How many Rafael Furcal for Carlos Zambrano rumors did you hear awhile ago?

Where was Holly in the 9th today I would have rathered had him up than Neifi, Cpat, or Macias who ended the game on deck. He has really seemed to fallen out of favor with Dusty. He only has 3 AB's since Aug.15th. Why is this does any one have any thoughts on the matter? On Willis if he was still with the Cubs he would be in AAA right now. The Marlins were in the toilet in May of 03 so they brought him and Caberra up to see what would happen. They struck gold. If they included Guzman or Mitre in that deal most of you would have bitched to high heaven about it the time. Hindsight is 20/20. If Alfonseca pitched for us they he did for FLA in 03 we would have gone to the series. In other news Levine is saying Griffey to the Sox talks have heated up.

"He only has 3 AB's since Aug.15th. Why is this does any one have any thoughts on the matter? " Yeah, my thoughts are "he isn't good" and "I'm glad Dusty isn't using him."

A Bobby Cox would have stopped using Holly and Patterson A LONG TIME AGO...He would be using promising Rookies like Murton..For Cox if you perform, you play...If you don't, then you won't play...It's that simple...He doesn't care about seniority and veterans...It's all about performance and how to maximize the opportunity to win...Dusty has a different management style - and so far it really hasn't helped the Cubs at all...Look at how far under .500 the Cubs are right now...We're SO FAR out the of the Wild Card race that it's not funny...It's not all Dusty's fault -- but he needs to accept a fair share of the responsibility for the Cubs performance (Hendry and McPhail do too).

Yeah, but he is better than C-pat or Macias and as good as Neifi. He should have been in their in the 9th instead KKKorey.

I would absolutely take Macias over Holly in that situation...as all we needed was a hit, and Macias has been noteably better than holly at that this year. If there was no one on, use holyy for the chance of a homer...when you have a runner in scoring position I take my chances with Macias. However, Holly over Patterson would have made some sense....but again, when it's a choice between Macais, Holly, and Patterson to get a big hit, your pretty much screwed no matter what.

For all of you complaing that we dont have Willis anymore you might want to look at BR. The 7th most simlar pitcher to Willis is Jerome Williams. And at age 23 the 3rd most sim P to Williams is some guy named Roger Clemens. I am not saying Williams is going to be the next Rocket, but he is a very underated guy on this board and over the long haul could be as good as Willis.

The only way Jerome Williams is as good as Dontrelle Willis over the long haul is if Willis' arm falls off.

LMAO comparing Willis to Jerome Williams. Does it make you feel better if you think Williams is as good as Willis? Anyways, back to reality........ The Cubs $100 million dollar team is just about as good as the Reds. For $70 million dollars less the Devil Ray's are showing how truely bad this franchise has become in 2 years. Cubs 61 wins. Tampa 54 wins. Who knew that from the end of 2003 until now we would be closer to Tampa Bay than a World Series.

Having a guy that might be as good as Willis doesn't make me particularly happy. I think I'll take Willis over the guy who might be as good as Willis. It's even more depressing if you've ever seen Willis interviewed. He's funny and personable, something the Cubs have exactly none of on their current roster. if Willis were on the Cubs he'd be a monster star. But I guess if you listen to McFail, we Cub fans should be excited that Willis once cashed checks in Boise with the Tribune Company name on them.

Technically, We're tied for 4th. But the way things are going we'll probably have 5th all to our selves by tomorrow. In DUSTY we TRUST!!!!

All is not lost! For we are working out way up the draft board with each loss! Gotta look at the posatives!

Williams is a very talented young pitcher and we are VERY lucky to have him. Just watch. We robbed the Giants in that trade.

Some interesting notes from the trib today: 1. Cubs will most likely pursue Furcal. He is likely seeking a 4/32 deal. His agent and Hendry have a good relationship. 2. Pie is done for the year and will play Winter ball in DR.

Eric Patterson was promoted to the AA West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx yesterday.

Does Epat being moved to AA mean that Pawelek is going to get that extra AFL spot? I don't think it would be a wise thing to do, but I do have some curiosity to see how he would do aganist some prime-time prosecpts.

a 4/32 deal? who's his agent? that's the stupidest thing ive heard since blaming dusty for the downfall of this club while ignoring the bullpen and underperforming bats. if furcal dont get 8-10m a year his agent has no idea what this market or his client is worth comparable to the need and supply of the 06 market.

Just another reason why Dusty Baker is a dumb ass. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-050827c… "I think [Murton] held his own admirably coming up from Double A," Hendry said. "So it's not like we're going to have 12 guys without big-league experience up here by Sept. 1. Ö I think if Cedeno and Murton are playing, that's a positive, and I think our fan base would appreciate that." But Baker may have a different opinion on what the fan base wants. "We owe it to ourselves and to our fans to put the best team on the field and try to win," Baker said. That suggests kids like Cedeno and Murton won't play on a regular basis. "It's too early for me," Baker said. "I haven't been in this position in years. You still owe your best to the team and to the fans and to everybody, for now. Eventually you're going to have to start thinking about that, but right now we plan to end up the best we can. We owe it to ourselves, to the paying customers and out of respect for the game." I still do not believe everything is all peachy creamy between Dusty and Hendry. They put on a good face but when Hendry is suggesting Murton and Cedeno playing more after Sept 1st is a good thing and then Dusty saying no its not a good thing, all is not well in Cub land. Dusty just doesn't fucking get it. It's still too early for him to decide, screw him. This season is toast and he is hell bent on playing the vets to the very end. Those quotes really burn my ass from the stupidest manager in the big leagues. He still thinks we have a shot and we need to be playing the vets. Do us a favor Baker and just quit.

If Hendry doesn't have a problem with that comment, then he's part of the problem, too.

" Do us a favor Baker and just quit." :o....yawn.....

Crunch I agree with you to about Furcal, would think that with his age and skill set, he should be able to get a little more than 8 mil per year. But to play devil's advocate, there aren't as many big market teams looking for a SS to drive the price up - last year Boston, Anaheim and St. Louis all needed a SS. This year Arizona and the cubs (most importantly no NY team) I think are the only two teams that have a lot of money to spend. Further, some sense of fiscal responsibility has seemed to take hold of baseball execs and I can't imagine anyone throwing $10 mil a year to a career 750 ops guy. I think furcal is very similar to renteria, rollins, etc, and will probably get a very similar deal. Maybe a little more, but in the same ballpark. If Cedeno can show he can hold is own, moving him to 2b for next year to split time with Hairston and/or Fontenot (if furcal is signed) would be an interesting cost effective move that should really help the infield defensively.

If Hendry really wants Cedeno and Murton to play then they will become the Veterans and for this season he will DFA Perez, Macias, Hollandsworth etc...or trade them for prospects (no one in contention wants them...that should say something)...and then Dusty has no choice but to play them. I'd love to see Hendry do this...but again..I think Hendry is becoming part of the problem. He should just eat Baker's salary for next year and put someone else in as manager who is on the same page...hell Baker isn't even on the same book. But Hendry is trying to get Baker to quit and Baker is trying to get next years pay and be "his own man" in spite of the fans and winning.

Cubfan: "DFA Perez, Macias, Hollandsworth etc...or trade them for prospects (no one in contention wants them...that should say something" Actually it think WASH claimed Neifi a few weeks ago.

well..murton and cedeno arent the best options. like it or not murton is effective vs. righties and cedeno is neifi jr. just cuz a guy has promise dont mean its ready to deliver now. cedeno in 1-2 years hopefully will be a more complete player and murton will hopefully learn to hit righties.

murton ISNT...blah blah blah...proofreading sux etc.

"But Hendry is trying to get Baker to quit " I love this nonsensical statments thrown out here ion TCR. It is funny to hear with no true supporting case, just a few quotes from teh GM and manager that appear to be different from each other, which both could be totally taken out of context. but when asked about each other no problems are mentioned by each , but they don't count. I guess it is more hoping Dusty is gone, then anything and has no true basis other than that, but it is amusing to see the spinners trying to make a Hendry/baker feud.

If Baker told Hendry "I want to talk to XYZ about managing their team next year"...Hendry would give him his permission and most likely wish him a lot of luck. You really think Hendry would say, "Oh no buddy! We need your leadership here." Come back to earth...Come back to earth!

Cubfan: "If Baker told Hendry "I want to talk to XYZ about managing their team next year"...Hendry would give him his permission and most likely wish him a lot of luck." At this point that is nothing more than gossip and opinion. You have nothing to back it up. You may be right, but I have heard on TCR Baker was going to get fired 100 tiems and it hasn't happened and I don't think it will happen. But hey, you are allowed to have your OPINION, but just don't portray it as fact and claim people who don't agree with your OPINION to be crazy.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
