Wood Surgery Scheduled

The white flags are upon us and here's another one. Kerry Wood will go under the knife on Wednesday for arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. When they first discussed surgery, I recall reading something about a 3 month recovery period and that is was very similar to the procedure that Matt Morris underwent for the Cardinals last year. That means he could start throwing once again in December, plenty of time to start addressing the issues with his mechanics that are probably the source of his problems. Whether that will happen is another story of course. I wonder if the Cubs will DL him and call someone up or just wait until Septemeber 1st when rosters expand. Could this finally be a way to get Jermaine Van Buren up? My limited roster knowledge tells me they could put Wood on the 60 day DL and get Van Buren on the 40 man roster. Speaking of the 40 man roster and September call-ups, any guesses? Here's mine for what they're worth. Adam Greenberg (once AA playoffs are over) Jermaine Van Buren (see above) Mike Fontentot (only if Todd Walker gets traded) Matt Murton Rich Hill Sergio Mitre Geovany Soto (almost always call up a 3rd catcher) I think John Koronka is a small possibility and Ronny Cedeno will stick around once Aramis comes back off the DL. I don't see any point in wasting money to bring up Ben Grieve.

I was at the game Sat. and almost had an aneurism as Wood was warming up - and then sat down even! For crying out loud what are you trying to do.

Thank god he's getting his surgery - Dusty apparently hasn't figured out he had to use Kerry carefully and not just like any other reliever.

The good news: We wont be sitting on pins and needles this year during the wild card stretch run

The bad news: There aren't very many good free agants up for grabs this year.

Sorry, JVB--though he way deserves it--will not be called up Sept 1 barring some unforeseen additional roster moves; he's not on the 40-man roster.

"Dusty apparently hasn't figured out he had to use Kerry carefully and not just like any other reliever."

Knowing that Kerry Wood needs surgery, and that he's going to be shut down early to have it, did it make sense to use him in the 8th tonight with the Cubs down 8-4?

What possible good could come of it?

  • Javy's grunge dive into the stands for the popup was awesome - the hitting into the double play not so much

  • Third time I've tried to post this (forgive me if it winds up appearing three times)

  • I'm pretty sure that Len called Bryant's home run a Brexit.

  • everyone but heyward with a hit and a 3 run lead with coghlan on 3rd through 5 batters. hell yeah.

okay, this is just silly. 19 pitches in, 1 out, 4 runs in, men on 1st and 2nd...hendricks up to bunt.

...and almora contributes the final out. that was a fun inning.

  • Clearly, Joe Maddon is a Lineup Wizzard.

  • "Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Friday that Anthony Rizzo (back) is feeling better and it's "possible" the first baseman could return to the lineup Saturday."

  • Maddon shore isn't afraid to bat a rookie 4th in the order.

  • Line-up shakeup, going all-2015 with pitcher batting 8th, Bryant 2nd

J-Hey, Bryant 1B, Zobrist, Willson, Coghlan, Baez 3B, Russell, Hendricks, Almora

  • The Cubs are currently down Schwarber, Fowler, Soler, and Rizzo and Montero appear to be day-to-day. Maybe not surprising that they are struggling a bit as they rely more than expected on Baez, Russell, Almora, Contreras, and Szczur to provide offensive value.

  • Joe: "I loved the way we brought it today, man. We'll take this every night and win a lot of ballgames like that. Losing 4 in a row...that's nothin'."
