Rusch vs. Arroyo: This Time It’s Personal

Glendon Rusch tries to bounce back from his disappointing opening outing while trying to keep the torrid bat of Bronson Arroyo in check. The Cubs will try to keep the ball rolling and look to extend their winning streak to 4 games today. The weather is a bit nicer than over the weekend, temperatures in the high 60's, hopefully it'll warm up Aramis' bat. And of course Derrek Lee can start earning his contract today with a nice 3 HR performance. As they say, GO CUBS!!!

Perhaps its tacky and classless, but some people enjoy it. It's not hurting anyone.

felix is just getting warmed with a new team and new teammates...sure it isnt like taking your SS/2nd/C away from your young crew, but unless jones goes to the DL pagan/mabry should be able to handle RF for a few days...if jones even needs that long.

he wasnt exactly limping off the field.

Wrigley Field is no longer the Friendly Confines, not when a bleacher seat costs $40, three beers erases a $20 bill, and expectations are so unreasonably high.

That friendly confines stuff goes back to when we used to cheer to cheer them up from our $1 bleacher seats. Wrigley was a place where baseball careers went to die and prospects came to lose all hope. It was usually half empty in the stands and totally empty on the field so the Cubs gave away a lot of tickets to the k-8 grammar schools who bussed kids to the game and sat them in the Bartman seats. The kids didn't know any better so they cheered the Cubs relentlessly. Booed the ump but never the Cubbies. It truly was a great place to be a bad ball player. Long live the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.

Add me to the folks who think it's ridiculous to boo anyone today...

Booing Korey or Sammy for bad attitudes or stubborness or a prolonged poor play and effort is one thing, a guy has one or tow bad outings and you're booing. Shame on them....

its just the yuppie seats that are that expensive in the bleachers...and if you think beer is high in chicago, stay away from other large cities.

the world of the mega-cheap wrigley bleacher seat went with the 20-30m "high end" payroll era.

gate attendance isnt a huge deal in most team's bottom line (seriously)...but with payrolls 5x what they were not even 2 decades ago (a generation in baseball years), costs of seats are gonna go up.

the powers that be added yuppie bleacher seat sections, but they also expanded the rest of the bleacher section. the only people that were robbed were the people holding the "tradition" of drinking too many old styles and screaming at a RF insted of watching the game. no offense, but even amongst the most praise-worthy bleacher creatures, the scorecard is a lost art on more than a few of them.

wrigley bleachers for many years are the only bleachers in baseball where ushers were there to make sure people dont sneak INTO the bleachers from more expensive seats...

what is the chance Rusch is in this rotation by the beginning of June?

I think Rusch is not in shape. He's carrying around an extra 30 pounds. When he does get in shape he should be okay. The only question is, will that be anytime soon? Or anytime this year for that matter.

At the moment we're seeing the guy who went 1-12 for the Brewers in '03 and 6-15 for KC in '98 .

rusch is throwing well...its just that rusch throwing well isnt all that. he's not hanging much or missing his location or lost a pitch...he's just getting hit...for power.

that's the part that scares me...its not like he's got something to work on unless he has a tip/tell in his motion.

Anyone know how much Rusch is being paid...? IMO, Hendry did NOT use good judgement when he re-signed Glendon Rusch -- there are much better pitching prospects out there.

obviously rusch has been pretty bad the last 2 starts, but the reds have the best offense in the NL and the conditions were less than ideal (Great American, 17 mph wind blowing out).

Give him at least one more chance versus a much friendler team (Pitt) and place (PNC) before we write him off....

rusch pretty much has to have another chance or more.

he's on the club, he's got 2 years of cant just toss him after 2 starts.

besides that, with wood/prior/miller knocking on the door of May and j.williams about to move to the #5 add a.guzman or ryu to the mix (for what could be only 1-2 starts) more moves would have to be made to the already young roster...and none could send rusch to AAA for all practical purposes.

anything could happen, but reguardless the cubs are kinda stuck with rusch no matter what...unless hendry gets over-the-top reactionary, early.

I would say no on that RobG. I kind of wanted Guzman and Marshall break with the team and start.

Rusch has showed nothing since he came to camp and Guzman has been pitching pretty well. The only difference is Rusch is on a MLB contract and the Cubs will trot him out much like Shawn Estes just so they get their money's worth.

Yeah, that is true we are stuck with him.

gate attendance isnt a huge deal in most team's bottom line (seriously)...but with payrolls 5x what they were not even 2 decades ago (a generation in baseball years), costs of seats are gonna go up.

$40/seat X 3 million seats is a lot of coin.
$30/seat X 2 million seats is a lot less coin.

I'm not sure how your ability to generate gate revenue isn't a big part of your ability to have a good bottom line.

And for the record, the only person I ever booed was Hundley. Flipping off the fans opens you up to that, I think.

well, honestly, the consessions/merch they sell at the game outweighs any average ticket price, but you could argue without those people those consessions would never get sold.

its just that when you factor in your tv rights, merch, licensing, etc. etc...the actual gate isnt a groundbreakign number whether you bring in an extra couple hundred thousand or not compared to other revenue streams.

oakland has a fun experiment going on this year.

they're cutting thier capacity in 1/2 on purpose. they're artificially creating a market of rarity. no longer will there be walk-ups for yanks/a's games...much less other series like sf/a's...

this will benefit the A's in a couple years when they get more season ticket sales injecting more money earlier into the club. they dont sell many there...people are just too used to the walk-up.

they have the ability to open it up for possible playoffs, but oakland now literally has one of the smallest capacity ballparks in mlb...maybe the smallest.

that is very interesting, especially since they claimed to have the highest Opening Day attendance in club history...

There website still claims over 50,000 capacity. Are they doing this for select games?

And when the A's hit the World Series and they open up the nosebleeds, they still won't sell out! LOL

the good:
-walker, jerry, mabry and derek got hits today.
-barrett is staying productive.
-murton got out of his slump (2 hits!).

the bad:
-jones hammy.
-ohmans confidence.
-our "#2" starter is a laughingstock

silver lining:
-some time off for jones can perhaps help him snap out of his hitting funk.
-the shellacking given to rusch hopefully getting him out of the lineup (hill has been keeping his walks down lately...hmmm...)

also, i strongly agree that barrett should have talked to fatty at some point (preferably after that 6th straight ball hit deep). something to the effect of "theres nobody on base, so just bounce them off the plate for gods sake".

oh well, like 433 said, better now the way it happened today then later. call it a mulligan.

here's the story...

they're reducing capacity to 34,077 from 44,073. Basically closing off the upper deck for games

It's a full-time change for the 81 games, and yes it does make it the smallest park in MLB.

I wonder if anyone reading Cub Reporter is going to buy "2005 Houston Astros: The Championship Season." I think I'd rather spend a day with Darren Daulton.

I watched most of the game on Gameday... What happened to Jacque's leg and does it look like he'll miss some time?

But that's not a couple hundred thousand dollars, that's $60 Million difference the way I put it up there.

In 2005, the Cubs drew 3.1M at an average of $32/ticket, or $99 million.
The Royals drew 1.4M at an average of $13.71/ticket, or about $19 million.

That's an enormous gap.

For reference (2005 #'s):

Oakland: 17.66 X 2.1M= $37 million
Yankees: 27.34 X 4.1M=$111 million
Red Sox: 44.56 X 2.8M=$124 million

must have misheard the thing about the largest Opening Day attendance, I know the proposed new park is quite small as well.

Yeah, whoever is in charge of the advertising on the sidebar is not very in tune with our audience, are they?

gosh I miss Shawn Estes

im not calling it a couple hundred thousand talking fans.

some people complain a lot of injuries being hidden and other conspiracies for the sake of selling a few more tickets.

and once you pay for parking, food, beverages, merch, etc etc...a lotta fans will outspend their ticket price and then some..especially if you bring kids to the game. a lotta smaller market teams market direct to the family just to get that safe/high-end revenue stream. it drives some of the older fans a bit nuts...our local hockey team has that mentality (carolina hurricanes).

The Bad:

Glendon Rusch and the idiot that re-signed him to this team

The Good:

This game is over

it said in "from the cubicle" at that aramis grimaced while leaving the batters box and then got lifted for neifi in the 9th.

sure enough when i went back to the yahoo game recap it had been updated to read:
"Aramis Ramirez hurt a muscle in his bottocks on a swing late in the game."

jacque pulls a hammy and aram pulls his ass. this game was a disaster.

i for one hate these j-v warmup games. anyone know who is pitching for the cubs varsity club tonight?

mark o'neal is reporting the jones hammy isnt expected to be serious.

Rusch is a part of Wrigley history!

It was the most homers allowed by a Cubs pitching staff since giving up seven to the Astros on Sept. 9, 2000, in a 14-4 loss at Wrigley.

SF game tonite cancelled...for those of us pissed EI isnt showing the cleveland game scheduled and were waiting on a nightcap.

  • I really like the sound of that idea about expanding the AFL to ten teams. Each org. gets to field more players.
They should do that anyway, regardless of Adv. Instructs.

  • Dallas Beeler, Corey Black, David Garner, Pierce Johnson, Steve Perakslis, James Pugliese, Duane Underwood Jr, and Rob Zastryzny threw early-morning bullpen side-sessions at Riverview yesterday.

Underwood threw last, and received specific one-on-one instruction from pitching coach Mike Mason.

  • HAGSAG: There are only five advanced instructs squads left, and presently the only "co-op" team operating is the Angels/Cubs.

The league was originally established as a "parallel" league to the AFL (a sort of "junior AFL"), for players too advanced for traditional ("basic") instructs but who were unable to get placed on AFL rosters due to AFL player-limits.

  • He is but I would think it'd be better to start out with offense and then bring in Jackson and LaStella once they have a lead. Stella has very good PH #s too.

  • most likely cost sharing + the league is short on players anyway. not many teams are chipping in on 'advanced instructional.'

  • I'm glad this is a one game playoff coming up, because McCutchen is one of my favorite MLB players. And as a baseball fan, I rather like the Pirates. I hope we beat them bad, of course. No mixed feelings here. And, I don't want a nail biter. Too old for that shit. The team of moran fans is easy to hate, though, and more suitable for a longer series.

  • A Jurickson Profar sighting!!!!???

  • I'd guess Jackson over Coghlan for the defense.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, is Jackson a better defender?

  • Less stress on the pitching staff?

  • I recall earlier this season when the Cubs played Bryant in center instead of left due to the weirdness that is the PNC outfield.

  • AZ Phil, what is the reason the Cubs are co-oping this team? They seem to have plenty of talent that would fill a roster.

  • RF is actually easier to play than LF in PNC so I'd guess Schwarber is there and that's why he was playing it Friday but yeah I'd say that's hopefully accurate.

  • Guess for Wednesday's lineup: Fowler (CF), Schwarber (LF), Bryant (3B), Rizzo (1B), Castro (2B), Montero (C), Russell (SS), Arrieta (P), Coughlan (RF)

  • Dusty already has blue and red wrist bands.

    /cmon dude
