Hill to Climb

Mike Kiley reports in the Sun-Times that Rich Hill has apparently been recalled from Iowa (presumably to replace Glendon Rusch in the starting rotation), and that David Aardsma has been optioned out, with Rusch transferred to the bullpen effective immediately. No word yet on whether Michael Wuertz will be recalled, too, but if he is recalled prior to Thursday, Wuertz will not burn a minor league option and will accrue MLB service time for his time spent in AAA the last couple of weeks. (If a player spends less than 20 days on option to the minors in any given season, no minor league option is used, and the player continues to accrue MLB service time for the entire period of time spent in the minors). If Will Ohman is next to go down, the Cubs might want to keep him around for a while longer (at least through Thursday), because the Diamondbacks are loaded with left-handed hitters. Ohman is at his best when he is used just as a LOOGY. On the other hand, Rusch is not effective against left-handed hitters, and he also gives up too many walks, hits, and home runs to be an effective relief pitcher.

for once I agree with Dusty:

"Quite frankly, I wish the animated and demonstrative and angry Z returns. Because the new, calm Z ain't working.''

No one ever reviews Larry Rothschild's performance. There must be a fundamental flaw in his approach - the walks! The walks are killing us!

Anyone know if Rich Hill on a starting schedule from AAA? If so is it on line with Rusch? I have tickets for tomorrow so I wouldn't mind seeing Hill instead of Guzman who will get lit up while Zach Duke owns our "lefty = kryptonite" asses.

ERICW: Rich Hill last pitched last Tuesday, so he could actually start tonight. However, I believe the Cubs are going to want to start at least one LHP in Arizona, because the D'backs are absolutely loaded with left-handed hitters.

I lucked out, get to see Maddux on Wednesday nite in AZ.

WHOOO -HOO!

apparently only Doug Mirabelli can catch a knuckleball, he's been traded back to the RSox...kind of funny. I don't know for what yet...

speaking of Thursday night....Juan Cruz set to go for the D'Backs

Boston gave SD a lot for a crappy catcher:

The Boston Red Sox have finalized a trade to obtain catcher Doug Mirabelli from the San Diego Padres in exchange for catcher Josh Bard, minor-league pitcher Cla Meredith and cash, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney is reporting.

Allegedly Meredith is pretty decent.

it's Josh Bard, minor-leaguer Cla Meredith and cash for Mirabelli

well the Rsox got Loretta originally for Mirabelli, so it's basically

Bard, Meredith and cash for Loretta

Yea...I guess that is true. Boston really ripped of SD in the Loretta trade.

ROB G: So then Thursday night will probably be Rich Hill vs Juan Cruz, with Wednesday night being Greg Maddux vs another ex-Cub, Miguel Batista.

some quick minor league notes:

Brownlie is starting again

Matt Craig is catching now (sometimes) at Daytona

the walks are killing us....agreed

I have always had the feeling that Cubs pitchers (besides maddux) have tried to be too cute with their approach and always going for the strike out. They try to squeeze too much and miss a lot. Its always common it seems to see a pitcher with 9-10 ks on the cubs along with 3-5 walks.

i for one would love to see rothschild go. It seems like our farm is developing promising pitchers only to have them go belly up in the bigs. Unless of course they end up on another teams.

i could be wrong but I think a fresh approach from our pitching coach might be a nice change.

If tonight's game is postponed (and the Cubs bullpen could sure use a day off!), the Cubs would be losing one of their 2006 night games, so I wonder if they might not consider scheduling a day/night DH on either Friday August 4th or Monday September 4th (Labor Day)?

That way, the Cubs wouldn't lose the night game, wouldn't lose the individual game gate, and would probably be in better shape to win the game come August or September than they would be now.

Insidetheivy is reporting that Hill was called up too. I really don't think Rothschild has been that bad. The Cubs system has been pretty good compared to the rest of the league when it comes to developing pitchers.

The bottom line is TINSTAAPP so we can't really fault Larry in that respect.

Right...the Cubs system has developed pitchers - there is no denying that. But once they get to the the bigs (i.e. once they start working with Rothschild) they struggle. And this is esepecially true when they end up with the Cubs (vs. another big league club). The Cubs have some of the best pitching talent in baseball, but something is wrong with how they are developing it.

Interesting analysis Dave, I am curious have you (or have you come across any) checked into the differences b'twn other pitching-rich org like the Braves?

No...I have not checked into anything. For the most part I am just going by what I perceive.

Breaking a bat over his knee and showing up Murton after he doesn't make a play isn't demonstrative?

I didn't see the Murton play, but he didn't give up any runs after the bat breaking I believe :)

"apparently only Doug Mirabelli can catch a knuckleball, he's been traded back to the RSox...kind of funny. I don't know for what yet..."

RobG, I forget which paper, either the Globe or Herald, but the trade is supposed to be for Bard and a pretty good reliever Clay Meredith. Meredith was at one time a future closer prospect but Boston has so many now with Papelbon, Hansen, Delcarmen, Breslow and Edgar Martinez(yes there is another one) that he's apparently expendible.

"No one ever reviews Larry Rothschild's performance. There must be a fundamental flaw in his approach - the walks! The walks are killing us!"

Burt G I've been on that too. RothSchild totally received a free pass in the playoffs of '03, the health or lack thereof in Wood and Prior because Baker is not the only one responsible for letting them push 150 pitches per outing in '03..especially in Prior's case when he'd never had that much of a workload coming out of college with minimal minor league experience. Even though they'd never let him get away and he has no ties to the Cubs organization I'd love to have the Nats Randy St.Claire. He's turned around John Patterson, Chad Cordero, and Livan Hernandez who was on his way out of baseball when the Expos traded for him a few years ago...or maybe if Maddux resigns after the season he can bring his brother a few miles south.

ESPN is also reporting the Mirabelli deal is for Bard & Meredith and that the Yankees actually tried to offer the Padres a trade just to keep him away from the BoSox.

Can Rusch play 1B?

Does anyone know what the hell is going on with Wood? A couple of weeks ago their were reports that he may start against Arizona.

Jon Greenberg, of Chicago.Cubs.MLB.com, reports Chicago Cubs SP Kerry Wood (shoulder) is still a couple weeks from returning. Cubs manager Dusty Baker said the team won't rush Wood back as they dont want to put any extra strain on his surgically-repaired shoulder.

Last I heard that he was going to make a rehab start this week. but who the hell knows.

Wood pitches against rookie leaguers Tuesday.

If all goes well he pitches for the Lugnuts May 7.
And if that goes by the book he pitches for Iowa on May 12.

Then he theoretically suits up for the Cubbies May 17.

Well a few weeks ago Wood felt a twing/discomfort in his arm pit so that slowed down his progress.

Prior was supposed to be ready by May 1st. Now it is June 1st.

Pray that Prior doesn't stub his toe while getting out of bed he could be out till August.

It would be interesting to see a chronology of the projected timetables for Wood and Prior that have evolved over the past months. It's like we have all been lulled into complacency by the Cubs management. Since when did "they will be ready when they are ready" become a satisfactory answer? It's a Jedi mind trick.

Remember the sadness/outrage the first time it was hinted that Wood wouldn't be ready by the first week of April? Then we were mad when it was mid-late April. Then May 1! But somewhere along the line we stopped getting mad, when we should actually be furious and demanding answers by now.

To me, the most puzzling part of the whole thing is that during Wood's entire rehab process -- through all the starts and stops -- Prior has always remained two weeks behind him, as if they share a shoulder or something.

Oh, and Dusty/Larry, please stop using the "We're not going to rush them" stock response when you are asked about their progress. We know you aren't going to rush them; we didn't ask you to rush them. We asked you when they are going to be ready. It's a non-answer answer.

Will Carroll in Baseball Prospectus reports Wood should start Thursday for the Lansing Lugnuts after pitching in Rookie Ball on Saturday. In 3 innings Wood pitched shutout ball on 39 pitches with 5 Ks and 1 W. After the start in Class A with Lansing, the next rehab start would be on Monday or Tuesday with Iowa. Major League debut would be the following weekend if all goes well. Big word, "if." Carroll reports that there is no time line for Mark Prior yet. (As a complete speculation, based solely on the slowness of Prior's rehab process, I suspect that Prior will have "minor" labrun surgery on that shoulder before the summer is out.)

"as if they share a shoulder or something."

I imagine it a as team of specialists(loosly used here for the Cubs) in lab coats watching Wood, Prior, And Miller. But they can only handle and observe one project at a time.
Wood throws they put him back in his box with styrofoam peanuts and then they roll out Prior in his box, etc.

Or they have only one mound in Mesa.

Come on now 433, Prior wasn't always 2 weeks behind.

There was that stretch where Prior wasn't throwing, and there were reports that Prior was having shoulder problems, but the Cubs denied that anything was wrong and he would be ready to go to start the season. That would have put him 2 weeks ahead of Wood.

I meant of course "labrum" not "labrun." Apologize for the misspelling.

(As a complete speculation, based solely on the slowness of Prior's rehab process, I suspect that Prior will have "minor" labrun surgery on that shoulder before the summer is out.)

Of course he'd be ready to go by opening day next year in this scenario, right?

Wow, you guys still listen to the Cubs for injury news? Can't teach an old dog new tricks I guess.

I remember when Wood was 7-10 days ahead of MILLER, and Wood was due back by the end of April. Somehow that still holds true even though Wood is now supposed to be back May 17.

Miller, of course, got put on the 60-day because he was supposed to have experienced a sudden onset of "arm fatigue" and is penciled back in to things around June 1.

FYI: The Lugnuts are no longer the Cubs Low-A team. That's now the Peoria Chiefs.

Ironically, Lansing is playing Peoria that day.

/Got my front row tickets already!

Interesting that both Will Carroll and Bluewater Pennant both forgot that the Lugnuts haven't been a Cubs affiliate for 2 season now.

I was just passing on the press release, jerk.

Funny, I didn't see any mention of any press release in your first post.

If you are going to keep plagiarizing other people's work, you really should make sure they at least get their facts right.

Jerk? I was born a poor black child...

Lord loves a workin' man, dont trust whitey. Got it.

I FOUND MY SPECIAL PURPOSE!

WTF are you talking about? Plagiarism?? From whom?

Stop being such an asshole.

CWTP -- are you saying post #28 wasn't plagiarized? That's what you seemed to be saying in #41.

Plagiarism, it's when you steal someone else's work and claim it as your own, by failing to say where you got the information.

Bluewater Pennant, you originally posted that Wood was going to pitch for Lansing, without citing any sort of source. Now, after the fact, you claim to have got the information from a still unnamed Press Release. That is plagiarism.

Now in post 32, We got the same information, from a poster who said the information came from Will Carroll. He cited his source, so it looks like Will Carroll's the idiot for saying Wood will pitch in Lansing, not the poster who just passed on the information.

So Bluewater Pennant, do you understand what plagiarism is now? Or do you need it explained to you again in smaller words.

433, are you effing nuts or just a toadie? plagiarized?? Do you know what the word even means?

Did you really think I or, as it turns out, Will Carroll as well, was speculating on those dates and places and not Larry Rothschild?

Look, the next time anyone here puts up any informational post, batting averages, playing dates, opponents, you name it. YOU, 433, better accuse them of plagiarism if they don't provide a source link, and that includes you and boob.

who gives a rat's ass
pass along information
off with your johnson

Come on...lets be honest. CWTP did not do anything wrong here, at least according to the standards that have been set.

No one really quotes a source in blog comments - especially around here. Even the writers (Rob, Phil, Ruz, Transmission) don't quote their sources for stats and such. For example, Rob G, in comment #13, gave some info on Brownlie and Matt Craig, but did not cite a source.

I don't hear you attacking Rob G for not quoting his source. I know that you don't like CWTP, but at least make some sense in your criticisms.

Once again, if people stuck to attacking ideas instead of people, we would have much better discussions.

"Will Carroll in Baseball Prospectus reports Wood should start Thursday for the Lansing Lugnuts after pitching in Rookie Ball on Saturday."

CFIG either Will Carroll is even dumber than I originally thought or someone fell asleep at the editorial wheel because the Lugnuts are no longer a Cubs affiliate in the Midwest League, they are a Blue Jays affiliate. The Cubs are back as the Peoria Chiefs again as of 2005.

CWTP -- you obviously haven't noticed but most everyone on this site, when copying someone else's work, posts the source. It's just good form (and probably a rule).

Post #28 seemed to present your own opinions and conclusions. You didn't say Rothschild said it, you didn't say Carroll said it, you didn't say Hendry said it. (By the way, there is a huge difference among the 3.) And you later admitted in post #41 that you were "passing along a press release." It's really confusing, and it looks like you are, well, stealing. (What press release was it, by the way? Will Carroll doesn't do press releases as far as I know.)

If you don't cite your source, you are a bad person deserving of scorn and ridicule. That is why I cast them upon you.

Dave -- I'm not saying someone needs to cite every source for every bit of info like it's a term paper or something. I'm saying people shouldn't cut and paste other people's stuff without saying who wrote it, that's all.

Yes, dust it up folks, as long as there is the occasional haiku-as-rejoinder! LOL BJS #48

I think the "Jedi Mind Trick" is an absolutely inspired allusion to management's information strategy about pitching rehab, but only from necessity, not malevolence. As much as anybody else, they know what it's like to be burned by false expectations.

"These aren't the [pitchers] you're looking for...THESE AREN'T THE [PITCHERS] WE'RE LOOKING FOR...move along...MOVE ALONG, MOVE ALONG"

This pseudo audio clip PLAGIARIZED SHAMELESSLY from Star Wars.

433 - then why are you not attacking Rob G for doing the same thing? CWTP and Rob did the same thing - cite info that they got somewhere else.

It was obvious in each case that it was not their own thoughts.

What Bluewater Pennant and Rob G. did aren't even close to the same thing. Passing along information without citing a source alone is not plagiarism.

Bluewater Pennant took the (innacurate) reporting of someone else, work which can not be verified by anyone other than the original author and then copied it verbatum as his own work. That is plagiarism.

Rob G. passed along two facts that have already happened and can be easily verified through multiple sources. That is not plagiarism.

It does not not matter if it can be verified elsewhere. Without giving the source, it would be plagiarism by any academic definition. Both got the information elsewhere. Therefore both shoudl have cited where they got their information. But it is clear that such a standard has not existed in this forum.

My point is that people do it all the time, and you attack the one person that you don't like because of it. Which is a load of crap.

And on top that, who cares? You would not have cared if anyone else had done it.

"Once again, if people stuck to attacking ideas instead of people, we would have much better discussions."

Well said Dave.... theres more petty attacks on this board than on an elementary playground.

Lets talk some Cubs baseball and leave the ego's and personal problems behind.

Lets talk some Cubs baseball and leave the ego's and personal problems behind.
----

Here, Here!

Now, back to baseball...

Boy, the Cubs suck!

Oh, plagiarism
Easy to do, hard to stop
So wrong yet so right

I remember when Wood was 7-10 days ahead of MILLER, and Wood was due back by the end of April. Somehow that still holds true even though Wood is now supposed to be back May 17.

Miller, of course, got put on the 60-day because he was supposed to have experienced a sudden onset of "arm fatigue" and is penciled back in to things around June 1.

Without giving the source, it would be plagiarism by any academic definition. Both got the information elsewhere.

Plagarism is the stealing of someone else's word by using them as your own. Writing down facts that may or may not have been written somewhere else by it self is not plagarism.

It becomes plagarism when you take the words of someone else and then intentionally use them as if they were your own work.

And on top that, who cares? You would not have cared if anyone else had done it.

No, as a journalist, I take offense to plagiarism by anyone. And anyone who feels the need to feel important by stealing other peoples work should be called out for being the vile people they are.

Bluewater Pennant, mind you, is hardly the only person who has been called out on here for plagiarism. The difference is that the other people who have been caught plagiarizing tend to cite their sources afterwords. Bluewater Pennant seems to like stealing other people's work more than posting originial thoughts. So as long as he keeps plagiarizing other people's work, myself and others will continue to call him out for it.

This isn't about ego, this is about keeping people honest. Without honesty, you can't have any good discussions.

I understand the whole plagarism argument and I think everyone would agree that citing your sources is preferred. But then again, it happens all the time on this board and by the writers. Stats are the obvious example.

If I am writing a paper on criminal activity and I use inner-city crime statistic's I better back them up with a source.

The same can't be said about baseball stats. I dont think anyone on this site actually watches every AB and keeps stats themselves... they are all pulled from sources on the internet and treated here as free information.

My point? Yea sometimes people may pull info that is technically someone elses work, but this board is not an academic experience. Lets treat it for what it is, a Chicago Cubs message board and quit acting like English teachers.

"I remember when Wood was 7-10 days ahead of MILLER, and Wood was due back by the end of April. Somehow that still holds true even though Wood is now supposed to be back May 17."
----

I'm desensitized by statements like that.
They all look the same anymore...

Kerry Wood 7-10 days towel drill fatigue rehab starts Peoria arm discomfort 2-3 weeks Wade Miller 2 weeks behind Mark Prior subscapularis afraidtopitchus soft toss flu-like symptoms mid-May off a mound simulated game 2-3 months no timetable long toss cramps pushed back 6-8 months returning sometime no setbacks don't count on it.

With all that being said.... from Chicagosports.com:

"The Cubs recalled left-hander Rich Hill from Iowa on Monday and sent right-hander David Aardsma to the Triple-A team.

Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Hill will likely start Thursday at Arizona in place of Glendon Rusch, who will pitch out of the bullpen after a string of bad starts."

I hope the "likely" is referring to "Thursday" and not "in place of Glendon Rusch."

In my mind Wood and Prior are nothing more than fictional characters. We have what we have. They are sure to be put in the same catagory as Moonlight Graham.

A board with active "peer review" is to be valued highly; reading the Pirates Honus Wagner site/board points out how much greater collective interest and quality contribution there is at TCR. Postings at Pirates Buried Treasure board are informative but completely unremarked-upon.

Oops, does that qualify as ending a sentence with a preposition? "This is the sort of behavior up with which we shall not put!" Oops, is that plagiarizing from Winston Churchill, or is it apocryphal?

Criticize away folks, at least I can hear you breathing, IMHO.

OMG LOL BJS!

If this keeps up (the really really funny gallows humor) then TCR better add a 'humor' byline for guest writers on a weekly basis.

Yea sometimes people may pull info that is technically someone elses work, but this board is not an academic experience.

I'm not saying we need to be treating this like an academic excersize.

But there is a very big difference between writing down stats, which we can all check for ourselves at a number of different places if we so desire, and copying a reporter or columnist's work - verbatum - and then passing it off as if it was the poster's orignial thoughts.

Quite frankly, I'm troubled that some people are trying to make the two out to be the same thing.

BJS, #60 was just a press release

"But there is a very big difference between writing down stats, which we can all check for ourselves at a number of different places if we so desire, and copying a reporter or columnist's work - verbatum - and then passing it off as if it was the poster's orignial thoughts.

Quite frankly, I'm troubled that some people are trying to make the two out to be the same thing."

I think they are different, but I think that copying stats also, technically, could be considered plagarism. Go back up to my example above. If you are typing a paper, you are not only going to cite to quotes from other sources but you are also gonna cite to data pulled from other sources. It doesn't matter how common that data is.

For example, 100 sources on the web may list Census Bureau data, but you are still going to cite the information as coming from the Census Bureau if you are typing a paper. I have never seen anyone cite MLB for baseball stats, even though I'm pretty sure all stats are derived from MLB approved box scores.

I don't disagree that not listing sources is lame, but I think everybody is guilty of it from time to time on here. Thats just the nature of a baseball message board. If we spend all of our time complaining about stuff like is this, we would never be able to talk about how much Neifi sucks, and then where would the fun be? haha

In an academic case, technically you would be right. But everyone here knows where to find baseball stats or box score information. There is no attempt to be dishonest, it just not worth it to provide obvious information.

however, without citing a source, there is no way to check information that comes from a reporter or columnist. More importantly, trying to pass off a reporters words as if they were your own thoughts is just flat out dishonest.

"however, without citing a source, there is no way to check information that comes from a reporter or columnist. More importantly, trying to pass off a reporters words as if they were your own thoughts is just flat out dishonest."

I agree 100%. I think its pretty lame when people cut and paste information from other sites without citing it.

I guess my whole problem has nothing to do with you, your point of view, or really even this issue. Just is annoying to me when I find time to read up on the Cubs and half the board gets filled up with seemingly personal attacks.

If you are a journalist and have a special place in your heart for this issue, my fault, I can understand your point of view. It just seemed on the surface to me to be more of a personal problem, which as I said, annoys the shit out of me.

Lets just get back to talking some baseball.

The lugnuts aren't a Cub affiliate anymore.

"TCR better add a 'humor' byline for guest writers on a weekly basis."
