Only A 13 Game Winning Streak

from reaching .500. There's always a bright side. We're a long way away from that 16-7 trouncing of the Reds on Opening Day. And don't forget the 5 error (3 thanks to Edwin Encarnacion), 4-1 win just a week later. Good news is we miss Bronson Arroyo's bat this series. Bad news is we're the Cubs. Just a thought, Now that Womack is apparently our new 2nd baseman. Who gets sent out when DLee comes back? Ronny Cedeno and Matt Murton are the only people with options left. It couldnt be Cedeno could it?

This is the best lineup we could have hoped for. Does anybody else sense (looking at cubs.com and such) that there is major campaigning for Dusty's job in the media?

How about a pitcher? We have one too many, and not enough work to go around for the ones that we have.

how about sending the entire team down to AAA and bringing up everyone there to the bigs? They couldn't possibly do worse than this current group is.

The Cubs had a team meeting today, so that's sure to inspire Woody not to give up 6 home runs in the 4+ innings he'll throw. How many does Dunn hit off Wood today?

#1: Hairston is likely going to be the odd man out, because this team would just fall apart without Bynum's versatility.

(sigh) No-mah is batting .371 w/ 34RBI (sigh)

This is the best lineup we could have hoped for.

How do you figure? Womack is in the 2-hole and Murton is batting 7th.

Good use of a low obp guy in the two hole and a high obp guy in the 7 hole....

has Pierre hit a single line drive all season?

Is Rich Aurillia really batting 4th for the Reds?

And Dunn second?

Interesting...

Well...if Womack continues to hit like he is, I will be okay with him in the 2-hole.

thanks for that observation dave.

if i keep waking up with three 100 dollar bills under my pillow, i'll be happy never to have to work again.

Thanks Green Lantern for being a smart ass.

I just figured that since I didnt like the lineup with Womack in the 2-hole, i thought I would point out that it worked today.

How are they doing so far?
Furcal .264 .682 OPS/ 2 HR 16 RBI/ .951 F%, 11 errors
Cedeno .283 .682 OPS/ 1 HR 14 RBI/ .959 F% 8 errors

Well that doesnt tell the whole story. After Furcal's slow start he is back to what he normally is and Cedeno, well, the rest of the league may be adjusting to him.

Furcal - May - 2 HR, 14 RBI, .324 BA, .379 OBP, .827 OPS

Cedeno - May - 0 HR, 6 RBI, 2 BB, 21 SO's, .263 BA, .276 OBP, .570 OPS.

Yeah they arent even on the same planet offensively anymore.

Actually Dave, I didn't think about order; I just was pointing out that neither Neifi! nor Bynum (Macias v. 2.0) was in the lineup. But it did work out, didn't it?

Walker injured on the collar-bone on a hard chopper (infield single). Stays in the game.

Let's hear it for the rookies!

Let's hear it for Wood, who, I am contractually obligated to mention, helped his own cause!

Prediction: Cubs get a 2 run lead late in the game thanks to some good pitching from Eyre and Howry. Neifi commits an error and Dempster blows the save. It's like i've seen it before somewhere.

On CBS, it says "Pierre sacrificed to catcher" - can't watch the game - how does this work?

Ernie, no argument, just wondering who Neifi comes in to replace in the double switch that brings him into the game. My money is on ARam who gets another multibase hit between now and the double switch. Gotta rest him at the end when he's hitting well.

Oh I have no doubt that it will be ARAM. We will probably get to see Bynum for Murton at some point too. So glad to have lost a future starting pitcher (Koronka) for Boom Boom.

And Dunn second?

Sure. High OBP = runs. High strikeout rate = no GIDP.

Actually, Walker's hitting better right now - better get him out ofthere and Neifi safely in his place.

Too bad what happened to Aramis couldn't happen to Aurilia too.

Let's hear it for the rookies!!!!

Murton was due. Good to see he can hit for power as well as average. He sees more than 3 pitches per at bat and takes walks too! He could develop into quite a nice little player.

I'm concerned about Wood's velocity -- did anyone else notice this? For the first three innings, he was consistently hitting 94-96mph (from the CSN gun) on his fastball, but after the third there was a severe drop-off...

In the fifth, he threw mostly fastballs, and only one of them broke 90, and in the sixth, he only threw about three fastballs, hitting 91 on his second-to-last pitch of the game, when it was clear that he threw it with everything he had...

I doubt that a power pitcher like Kerry Wood, who lives and dies by his high 90's fastball, can seriously expect long-term success if he can't throw it for more than three innings...I realize that he's just back from injury, but shouldn't the cubs have given him another minor league start at least? He's had more shoulder soreness than normal between starts, and now this velocity problem...no wonder the cubs pitchers are so injury-prone.

good point steve but i think it's down to the fact he hasn't pitched regularly for such a long time. I am sure that the velocity comes back a few more starts - he'll also be allowed to go passed 85 pitches at that point too.

Well, will you look at that? The proper use of a double switch. And here I tought it was a lost art....

I know this won't be popular...but.......DUSTY FOR MANAGER OF THE YEAR.

Winning 18 games with this lousy team put together by Andy "Village Idiot" McFailure has to be a major accomplishment.

Juan with a chance to drive in a run! What are the bets?

good one justanoldcub...good one

Watch out for the power hitter Freel, Dumpster! When you're this bad, even four runs seems unholdable.

I'm watching on Gameday. Why did that go from a HR to a double?

Jeez Dempster. Any chance you could throw a breaking ball for a strike? Lord knows why you throw fatballs over the heart of the plate!

scott williamson...

does anyone have a clue what is wrong with him?

i dunno what is up and no one can give me a clue on it.

I'm watching on Gameday. Why did that go from a HR to a double?

Bad umping.

This one went in our favor.

Congratulations to the Chicago Cubs for their 1 game winning streak. Perhaps they can win another before dropping the next six!

WPZ: why did that go from a HR to a double?

I'm listening to the game on XM -- Ron stated that the ball looked like it went into the basket, then hit the brick on shot right back out. After the umps conferrred, they ruled it a double.

Someone asked b4 how Pierre bunt sacrificed to the cather. Translation: he put down a horrid bunt that went about 3 inches. The catcher played it and threw him out at 1st. The 2 runners on advanced, thus the sacrifice.

Then again, Ron repeatedlly wished everyone listening a Happy Labor Day, so I could be wrong. He also referred to that fine young player the Brewers have: Cecil Fielder. Lol.

Cubs Win! Good thing too, now Jim and Dusty can continue their delusions that every thing is just fine in Wrigleyville for at least another week.

Thanks for the updates, guys.

CTMike: LOL x 1 million. The same Ron Santo who said that Ruben Quevedo reminds him a lot of Ruben Quevedo? This Old Brain is getting rustier every season.

does anyone have a clue what is wrong with him?

There's just a quick line on Cubs.com that Williamson is ill, but it doesn't specify what the problem is.

But I'm sure its nothing that 3-4 months of rest, followed by some good ol' towel throwing won't fix.

1 down, 12 to go. keep writing those headlines, rob g.

Thanks CTMike

Does anybody have an idea when Angel Pagan is back?

Prediction: Wood takes another extra day before next start. I say next Monday.

"We're encouraged with Prior's outing tonight. I'm not too worried about the game results, this is just to get him back in the swing of things. He says he's pain free right now so we'll see how he feels tomorrow."

How close will I be after tonight's start?

thnx bleeding..ive been looking for info on him for a few days now. when he wasnt used in the atl blowout it raised my concern huge.

btw, rusch is back in the rotation...c'mon prior/miller...hurry up.

I think a name-change to Womack! might be in order. It sounds like onomatopoeia, as in a caption to any photo with Barrett punching AJ. Or one of those sounds on the credits of the original Batman series.

Biff! Pow! Womack!

how did wood and aardvark look?

deep counts? efficient? good? streaky? your mom?

#44 by ERNIE: excellent question!

#48 by DEREK: hilarious!

im amazed at how much more enjoyable going over stats was today what with the W and all. i mean, i know the season is in the pooper, but still it was pretty refreshing.

if only they wouldve done something sooner after losing d-lee....

Mark Prior update:

Pitched only 2 innings vs Kane County

1HR(solo). Of the 6 outs, 3 flyballs, 3K's.
I couldn't get a pitch count but it couldn't have been pretty, they were shooting for about 45 pitches.

Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Prior 2.0 4 3 2 0 3 1 9.00

Kane County Top 1st
Michael Massaro flies out to left fielder Jesus Valdez.
Nick Blasi called out on strikes.
Frank Martinez reaches on fielding error by first baseman Ryan Norwood.
Jeffrey Baisley flies out to center fielder Davy Gregg.

----

Kane County Top 2nd
Anthony Recker flies out to center fielder Davy Gregg.
Jose Pineda homers (6) on a fly ball to left field.
Isaac Omura singles on a fly ball to center fielder Davy Gregg.
Raul Padron called out on strikes.
Justin Sellers singles on a fly ball to left fielder Jesus Valdez. Isaac Omura to 2nd.
Michael Massaro singles on a fly ball to center fielder Davy Gregg. Isaac Omura scores. Justin Sellers scores. Michael Massaro to 3rd. Throwing error by center fielder Davy Gregg.
Nick Blasi strikes out swinging.

At least no walks for Prior.

I was at the Peoria game....Prior looked ok. Not great. Not completely awful. Pitch count was right about 40ish. I tried to remind myself that we watched Wood throw his rehab start there, and he looked good, only to blow his first 2 major league starts.

Not like any of us are actually expecting him to be the Cubs savior anyway, right?

Did you see that T-Shirt shot the TV crew caught during the ninth inning? The guy's shirt said:

Forget Dusty.
Fire Hendry.
Fire McFail.

"Not like any of us are actually expecting him to be the Cubs savior anyway, right?"

Savior? I'm amazed to hear he still plays baseball.

Mark who?

Ryno..........Did you notice how quickly the Tribune owned cameras got off that:

Forget Dusty
Fire Hendry
Fire McFail

T-shirt.

Not looking good when number 6 hitter on Kane County takes you yard.

That must of been one helluva cold Prior had.

Jock Jones mommy got upset.

What were the fans say? Was it racial slurs? Were they cussing her and her son out?

In Friday's game, Jones lost a ball in the sun during the seventh inning that ruined Carlos Zambrano's no-hitter. In the bottom of the inning, Jones was called out on strikes and a fan allegedly yelled, "The sun must have gotten in your eyes."

According to witnesses, the fan was berated by a finger-wagging woman wearing a replica of Jones' No. 11 jersey. It turns out the woman was Jones' mother, Linda Faulk, sitting two rows away. Jones admitted the incident happened but was reluctant to go into details.

"She took care of it," he said. "She took care of it how every parent should.

"You shouldn't have to listen to that when you come to games."

Oh my god. Such rude fans. Our franchise should be ashamed that Jones and his mother have to put up with this kind of hate speech.

Next time fans just shut your damn mouth or Jacque Jones mom will shut it for you.

Jacque Jones is a fine player, I hope some of these imature drunk bandwagon fans leave him alone, it is really getting old . . . throwing balls, cussing, etc. ENOUGH, stop it . . .

juan pierre sucks. hopefully he's gone for '07 and a one felix pie will be ready (as in, ready for gene clines to sabotage his hitting prowess).

jae kuk ryu sucks. hopefully he got a wakeup by his day in the bigs and next time we see him he's not so scared shitless of becoming another cubs base-on-balls machine he's able to avoid being a cubs 4-bagger machine, realizing the latter is much, much more certain to keep you at the farm than the latter.

womack! is a fluke for now much like neifi! was a fluke at the outset following nomars exploding crotch. may he continue to dazzle for as long as he can, bless his heart.

for the people like me tired of calling for the heads of GMs and skippers for all the good it will do us, lets just hope lessons are learned this year (assuming they all actually do give a damn about playing in october) and we are rid of bums like bynum, neifi, JHJ, pierre, and even mabry at this point. i know losing dereks bat and aramis hitting under .240 are a big part of it, but still, i mean these guys are BUMS.

reputable leadoff in CF (or felix pie)
todd walker (or better)
derek lee
aramis ramirez
michael barrett
matt murton
jacque jones (or better)
ronny cedeno

i mean, along with this bullpen (including aardsma and minus rusch/novoa), that looks damned good for next year (and not THAT different from what we should have had this year). with an improved bench (in place of the above mentioned bums) and a real rotation (built on carlos and marshall at this point), hell, we'd be a lock to make a run for 3rd!

...aaaaahh, this season, this team, is killing me.

CUBBY: juan pierre sucks. hopefully he's gone for '07 and a one felix pie will be ready (as in, ready for gene clines to sabotage his hitting prowess).

The Cubs and Cub fandom seem convinced that Felix Pie is a leadoff guy, simply because he's really fast. He has a long swing, but for now he's fast enough to make it work.

Honestly, I think Montanez has a better strike zone for the leadoff spot and I hope the Cubs org doesn't write him off as AZ Phil suggested they would by not putting him to the 40-man by the end of the year.

Pitiful Cubs could use a maverick owner

{...Mark Cuban would be interested in owning the Cubs. I know this because he said so, by e-mail, responding quicker to my questions than it takes Andy MacPhail to remove his tinted sunglasses and Dusty Baker to make a pitching change. Tired of writing every week that baseball-inept Tribune Co. should sell the club and set Cubdom free, I chose to seek solutions this time and gauge the self-made billionaire's level of curiosity.

It's higher than I thought.

"If the Cubs come up for sale, it would most likely happen through an investment banker. If they produce a book, I certainly would take a look at it,'' wrote Cuban, who found time to answer even with his basketball team, the Dallas Mavericks, sitting two victories from the NBA Finals...}

Pie is hitting under .270 at Iowa and is a whopping 4/10 in SB. Before we all pencil him in at CF for 2007, let's see if he can first achieve mediocracy at AAA.

Scott, you really are a d-bag.
