Well That Was a Shame

Rich Hill looked like he had some dominating stuff yesterday, striking out 10 batters in 5 innings, but he also got touched for three homers and Mother Nature took care of the rest, washing out the game before the offense could get Hill off the hook. Oh well, they all can't be great. Today Z hits the mound, on some sort of personal quest to try and win the Cy Young. A fool's quest it seems. He's 5th in the NL in Win Shares among starting pitchers, 7th by VORP, 5th in ERA and he's dropped to 4th in K's because of his time missed. He is 2nd in wins and only one win shy of being tied for the league, but that's because for whatever reason the Cubs offense decides to perform when he pitches (6th best run support in the league). Of course, some of that could be because of Z's presence in the lineup itself. Eight lousy games left! I assume something is wrong with Jacque Jones. What the hell is wrong with Dusty to start Mabry over Moore?

Why don't Pitching Coaches make good Managers? It seems to me guys like Dave Duncan of the Cardinals and the former picching coach of the Atlanta Braves (?) were without peer. Why can't someone like Dave Duncan be a manager on say a young pitching staff like the Cubs. I mean if he can work magic as he has for the Cardinals why cant he do it for the Cubs.

Why can't Quaid(sp?) step up? The kids have all performed for him? Also WHY ISN'T MOORE playing instead of Mabry????You gotta love Dusty's line-up management. scooterÆ BTW Manny: you are right about my previous post.

J. Jones wife gave birth to a child. He'll join the team on Monday.

This is depressing from the Paul Sullivan article about whether Ramirez is staying or going... Scott Moore is the only third-base prospect in the system who could step in, meaning the Cubs likely would have to sign or trade for a replacement. Moore is hitting .318 in 22 at-bats and hasn't played enough to get a fair evaluation. "He hasn't had enough at-bats yet, plus the league doesn't know him yet," Baker said. "He did hit .275 at Double A. I've always liked what I've seen of him, but there's more to this game than just hitting. There's baserunning, fielding, judgment plays. Ö I like what I've seen, big-time. Is he ready to be here today? I don't know that. You'd like to see a guy have more success in the minor leagues." I don't know, when would be a good time to get him more AB's? We are 29 games under .500, Lee is out again, and no one knows if Ramirez is staying or going. Gee wouldn't it be nice to find out what Scott Moore could do with the bat playing everday the rest of the season? Apparently looking towards the future with this franchise is playing Blanco and Mabry at 1b instead. A franchise with a clue would be playing Moore at 1b not playing musical chairs between a veteran catcher who has barely played the position and a pinch hitter hitting near .200. Meanwhile, Arizona left fielder Luis Gonzalez told a suburban Phoenix paper the Cubs and White Sox would be two teams he would be interested in signing with this winter Thanks Gonzo, but no thanks. Your productive years are over.

So Bonds hit his 26th HR this year tonight. That HR broke Hank Aaron's NL record for most HR's. Bonds is at 734 now with 21 left to tie Aaron. As long as he stays healthy and is playing baseball next year, it appears he will break the record. Should be an interesting offseason to see what he does.

*Should be an interesting offseason to see what he [Bonds] does.* He probably won't hit many home runs in the offseason, and if he does, they won't count toward his major league totals. *Luis Gonzalez told a suburban Phoenix paper the Cubs and White Sox would be two teams he would be interested in signing with this winter* BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Right. Only if they go back to letting everyone do roids scot-free with no testing. *J. Jones wife gave birth to A child.* Hopefully HIS child...otherwise he'd look a bit stupid taking the time off to go and hang out. *Why don't Pitching Coaches make good Managers?* Roger Craig was pretty successful, but I'm guessing that players probably get sick of stupid advice like "Hey, don't throw this guy a fastball" or "Hey, just throw strikes", extrapolated into bigger, grander strategic advice like "Hey, just win some games" or "Hey, just score more runs than the other team on a consistant basis".

Couple notes: Ramirez on coming back with the Cubs: "I don't know yet," Ramirez said. "We've still got eight games left, and we've got to play through and see what happens. I don't know what's going to happen. This is business, and you never know what can happen," Ramirez said. "I can't predict what's going to happen. I don't know what the front office is thinking." -Cubs.com Hendry on Baker: "It's the same as I told everyone in July, and that's that I'll decide what's in the interest of the organization in the first week after the season," Hendry said. "That hasn't changed. I'll do what I feel is in the best interest of the organization, and that obviously encompasses a lot of things and there's no need to get more specific than that," Hendry said. "You do what's in the best interests of the Chicago Cubs and not what's in the best interest of any individual, including myself." -Cubs.com When asked if he has made decision on Baker yet: "Not necessarily," Hendry said. -Cubs.com

You have to figure Dusty won't be coming back, but I wonder how that figures in to guys like Aramis. I know Dusty is a player's manager and they all appear to like him; That's what they're supposed to do and say. Supposing that it's genuine, would Aramis be more inclined to return to Chicago if Dusty stayed?

Ryno: "Supposing that it's genuine, would Aramis be more inclined to return to Chicago if Dusty stayed?" I am sure it is genuine, but when it comes down to it, if Hendry throws the right money at him, ARAM will resign. If Hendry doesn't offer him an average of at least $13 million per over 4-5 years, ARAM will test FA. I am sure both ARAM and Pierre would want Baker back, but for the right amount of money I am sure they would play for anyone (ask Furcal).

...and a madrigal "non-error" leads to a sac fly for a tie game.  nice.

having a ball clank off your glove, but still getting it count as a hit because it was hit hard is a nice stats gift.

For sure. This lineup isn’t exactly stacked as is, and subbing out a Cooper or even a Tauchman for Madrigal won’t do it any favors.

the ESPN bottom graphic taking up 1/8th of the screen sucks.

i only use ESPN during baseball season and i'm forced to watch a baseball broadcast designed to be broadcast in sports bars and betting parlors where the news/scores of other games is as important as what you're actually tuned in to watch.

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

  • crunch (view)

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳
