Gameday Open Thread / Michigan State vs. Marquette

Oh, sorry...I mean Mariners @ Cubs. Theodore Roosevelt takes the hill for the Cubbies, the Mariners are in split-squad action and put Cha Seung Baek (Who?) on the mound.

Comments

what dumb-ass ad exec thought it would be a good idea to put that hobbit in his underwear? Holy shiite!!!

The Real Neal says: March 15th, 2007 at 12:01 pm I think when Prior got pushed back from starting today (right?) that was the death knell for the writers. It just took these two guys a few days to figure it out. I hope he throws 94 on Saturday and strikes out 7 in four innings, aside from the fact that it would help the Cubs, it would be make Mariotti look like an even bigger idiot. ................................................................................ I cant resist this from the long thread this morning. Don't you all know that all we are doing is making Jay Mariotti MORE FAMOUS?

I think there's a point in R-Neal comment- - death knell for the writers might have been when they heard LouPa say in person "Leave him [Prior] alone, don't even bother to go to his [minor league ST] game," and maybe something in following days FINALLY convinced them that LouPa really MEANT it, not just being sarcastic. He's moved on, making preparations to do without Prior, and so should we.

Agree with #4. Mariotti is virtual self parody. He just wants to create controversy. Just ignore him. The DeLuca piece I thought took some shots that were maybe unnecessary, but the basic gist was that the Cubs were getting prepared to move on without Prior, which I think is accurate and as it should be. If he comes back, great. If not, it's a shame, but . . .

crunch- While the Cubs are hard to find WSCR is broadcasting all Sox pre-season games so instead of my drive home with my favorite Boers and Bernstein I get the babbling of Ed Farmer and Chris Singleton. Ech.

floyd DH, murton left, derosa 2nd..its the full "A" team out today in expected positions.

ted lilly gets hit a bit in the 2nd...2h/1bb, 1er (2r, izturis error on a throw). his 3 hits given up have been singles, but hell, the entire seattle lineup today minus the catcher is bench or kids.

quick inning for lilly, allowed 1 more single, K'd 2, walked none... 3ip 4h 2r (1er) 1bb 2k so far

aram homer...soriano triple...blah blah blah...this is a severe B-team seattle is marching out there today. hard to take anything too seriously. cubs up 2-6

either ted lilly has given up 20 runs, someone's hurt, or the mlb boxscore feed hasnt updated in a while.

great. lilly went 3.2ip...then replaced after getting 2 outs, no hits, no bb's. howry came in for the last out in the 4th. sigh...wonder what's up with that.

im culling wires for news on lilly. hopefully he just reached a limit or did something minor..or lou just wanted to experiment with howry...i dunno.

floyd is eatting up these B-team chumps...jones and soriano, too. floyd with a homer/double (3rbi)... 3-9 going into the top 9th

btw...j.hairston jr. also beat out d.relaford and m.kata for utility bench for TEX today, too.

Wasn't there a commercial with Juan Pierre banging a drum waking someone up last year and running out of the room? Maybe it was a Mcdonald's commercial and it's a series now...

thnx for the link carlos...new post up on it along with AZ Phil's recap

in case anyone cared, Marquette dropped a load bigger than the 2004 Cubs and Dusty was nowhere in site. Didn't score for the first 9 minutes, down 20 at one point in the second half. Our second leading scorer has been missed.

Thank you Bob Knight for torpedoeing my bracket on day one of the tournament. And thank you also to Marquette, who I really thought could be Michigan State. At least Butler advanced to the next round. Time to be a fan and not worry about my mega $10 investment going to hell.

while watching the Z commercial for McD's, I saw this linked silent 6 1/2 minute video of Wrigley Field from the 1929 World Series...very interesting to see the ballpark before bleacher walls and with the earlier scoreboard. http://tinyurl.com/22gdvo

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.

What are the chances we can back off on gloating over other people’s misfortune?  One of the things I appreciate about the TCR community is that the remarks are more productive and add to how I like to follow the game.

Lately, however, I’m reading comments that are just mean.  If I were an MLB player, I would hate to get a back or finger injury and have someone write ‘hurrah!  I hope we never see him again!’  Especially when it is someone we were praising not long ago.  I’m not saying ‘don’t express how you feel’ but some comments lately seem downright mean spirited.  Stuff I expect from other communities but don’t often see here.  The TCR community has always spoken the truth but never with such a dark tone.

Just my two cents.  I hope Hendricks comes back and is the professor we all know. He can pitch for the Cubs as long as he wants in my book.

happ is back (and starting), mervis DH, tauchman gets RF.

morel 5th in the lineup.  hoerner continues to lead off, even vs a righty.

I don't care to see Hendricks or Smyly on the 26-man Roster the rest of the season. Both, stupid signings and option pick up by Jed.

i know the cubs are paying the guys, but for the sake of the win/loss column this is some great news.

woo!  people getting injured!  kick ass!

    sportsball is cruel.

would have liked to keep cooper, but it looks like they're gonna go with wisdom if they have to pick a righty who's gonna K 1/3rd of his PA's.

Edwards would be my guess, or maybe they’re hoping Sanders or R Thompson can finally figure it out

  • Cubster (view)

So it’s Mervis, Wesn and Little for Cooper, Hendricks and Smyly. Count me in. Starting rotation for now: Taillon, Imanaga, Wicks, Assad and Brown-Wesn. Eventually Steele.

    Lineup

Hoerner, Happ, Bellinger, Busch, Morel, Swanson, Tauchman, Mervis, Amaya.

Another year AZPhil, and you have more to do than ever! Heck yeah! Great stuff from Rosario so far. What are your impressions of guys like Freilyn Silverio, Adan Sanchez, Jose Escobar, and Anderson Suriel? Particularly the first two, feel like I’m forgetting one.

  • fullykräusened (view)

My first thought was that Hendricks was IL'd with a broken ERA, but after some quick research, you're right about MLB making at least some effort to discourage the "phantom IL."
