Gameday Open Thread / Cubs @ White Sox

Angel Guzman takes the mound in another round of "5th Starter Idol", will he do enough against the homer happy White Sox (leading all teams in homers this spring and tied for third in total runs) to keep from getting voted off? The White Sox send Javier Vazquez to the mound for us to tee off on (hopefully). Michael Wuertz is set to make his first appearance in Cactus League action as well.

Off topic, but an ant died while crawling on the backlight of my LCD monitor -- any ideas on how to remove it? Google won't help.

1. Pick up your monitor 2. Shake it 3. Put down your monitor. How come Michael Weurtz has to open the season on the DL, btw. Is that because everyone thinks he will be inneffective like he was last spring?

why would he even start on the DL? if he's not ready, just send him to Iowa, he's got an option year left that he's sure to burn this year anyway. he's got about 2 weeks to get in shape and get going though, so he seems a bit behind. Marshall is supposed to get Cactus league action next week as well.

"1. Pick up your monitor 2. Shake it 3. Put down your monitor." Been doing that since last night. I've tried really hard to dislodge it to no avail.

Off topic, but an ant died while crawling on the backlight of my LCD monitor — any ideas on how to remove it? Google won’t help. Try putting an animal that eats ants in your monitor. Maybe a small frog...

Oh Slacker you don't want to go down that road. Cause eventually you will be looking in the yellow pages for gorillas that eat bobcats.... Try a can of compressed air and shoot it through the vents.

Theriot, 3B DeRosa, 2B Lee, 1B Floyd, LF Jones, RF Murton, DH Cedeno, SS Blanco, C Pie, F, CF

Podsednik, LF Erstad, CF Thome, DH Konerko, 1B Crede, 3B Mackowiak, RF Iguchi, 2B Hall, C Uribe, SS

ah...AFV's dumb theme with "next cubs vs. whitesox" gimmie a garden claw gold ad and it'll feel like baseball again.

great...the wsox crew calling the game and the audio is a compressed mid-range heavy feed.

off-topic, but ND down 14 to Winthrop with nine and half to go in the second half. Also, Badgers losing by 12 to Texas A&M.Corpus Christi, late first half.

the full audio feed kicks in just in time for j.jones to K and we all got treated to a "he gone!" in full frequency stereo. lucky us.

Hawk: Is being quite complimentary on our Blue guys. Believes that Sori is the best player they've gotten in years, and 2., believes the team will win the NL Central. Somewhat uncharacteristic for "He Gone"

That was some funny stuff. Ozzie is a racist though. Isn't Piniella part Mexican? Ozzie said he is probably taking a nap, just like Mexicans like to do in the afternoon. He should be fired. Good thing Fox isn't broadcasting this game.

Hey Cliff, don't worry about that two base error, just take it easy jogginb back to the wall.

WHAT A FIELDING HACK! CLIFF FLOYD!!! Horribly mis-played a single hit to left - turned into a "triple"

not to go "well, its cliff floyd" when its just his first TV game...but, well...its cliff floyd. you're not gonna get grace or beauty out there.

"Ozzie is a racist though. Isn’t Piniella part Mexican? Ozzie said he is probably taking a nap, just like Mexicans like to do in the afternoon. He should be fired. Good thing Fox isn’t broadcasting this game." But we do take naps in the afternoon!

It's stereotyping and he should be fired! Seriously as a Mexican American, did you take offense at Lyon's 'hablaing the espanol' comment last year?

Oh Slacker you don’t want to go down that road. Cause eventually you will be looking in the yellow pages for gorillas that eat bobcats…. First, you're gonna need some sort of bird that eats small frogs...

Guzman does look really good. The problem is he doesn't seem to have an outpitch at the major league level. But go ahead and end the competition right now. Miller can be the long man or be traded if he doesn't like that. Hawk just called that single and 2base error a triple...

that's guzman as usual, imo...guy has a zillion pitches, but aside from the mid-90s fastball they're just good-average at best. his variety of pitches make him interesting, but watching him put it together can be interesting and frustrating.

Sorry, that was me. Still had your info stored from last time you used my computer..

I knew it wasn't me because I can't figure out how to use the italics ! You should get a job!

You should get a job! I've got a wonderful job that allows me to leave early on Fridays so I can go home and watch Cubs games!

Taguchi's hit was scored a triple. If that's as fast as Floyd can run, Murton's career just got brighter.

The 2 best managers in baseball?? Have these announcers heard of LaRussa and Leyland, guess not. I do think Piniella is up there though.

Ozzie is about to get really dumb this year with out the pitching he had for the last two years.

guzman's line is gonna look uglier than he pitched. still, its been a buncha good looking pitches strung together with pretty ordinary results.

Floyd really is a butcher out there. So slow, bad arm, terrible reaction and routes. He's got to hit over .300 to make up for his D. Guzman has good stuff and good control, just needs to throw a 3rd pitch more often. For the most part its just fastball, curveball, fastball, curveball....

"Seriously as a Mexican American, did you take offense at Lyon’s ‘hablaing the espanol’ comment last year?" Not whatsoever, but I can see why Lyons was fired -- that was a pretty shitty thing to say on-air.

Just going byt the numbers -- which isn't always fair -- but, once again, the higly touted Angel Guzman had a chance to make a statement that he was reday for prime time, and botched it. Seven hits and a walk so far (3 1/3 IP). Ugh.

I think the last three runs were off Ryan O'Malley, but Gameday is charging them to Guzmán -- I wasn't paying enough attention to see if Guzmán started the fourth inning.

I'd rather french kiss Carrie Muskat than listen to one more inning of Hawk Harrelson.

Carlos- Hawk should be leaving soon to go take a dump, then it's the wonderful Joe Carter like announcing of DJ.

so is that gonna be the TCR chat or parachat or still looking? something will be decided before Opening Day and we'll stick with it, I don't see the rush. mlb gameday says 4 ip for guzman....

Hard to believe Guzman had no K's he must have had 2 strikes on 10 batters. Floyd is behind and all, but he is playing like a guy who has already made the team, whereas the rest of the team seems to be trying.

It looks like the good Morgan Endsberg is back, .387 for the spring with his third home run today. That makes the Astros a pretty dangerous lineup, even with the 3 easy outs at the bottom.

My money's on Miller. Like Novoa, Gooz still can't finish an inning or a batter off with regularity. Same problem he had in '06 when going 0-7. I was looking for a slam-dunk performance, but it was pretty much off the rim. Tie goes to Miller. See J. Hendry if you don't like it.

not sure I'd call it dangerous, possibly adequate if Ensberg is more 2005 than 2006 which he should be. Problem is their pitching is going to be way down unless Clemens comes back.

@ Real Neal: Alfonso Soriano Chris Burke = Cubs. Cesar Izturis vs Adam Everett = Wash. Aramis Ramírez vs Morgan Ensberg = Cubs. Derrek Lee vs Lance Berkman = Same, Berkman's edge in OPS is offset by Lee's defense and speed. Michael Barrett vs Brad Ausmus = Cubs, by far. Jacque Jones vs Luke Scott/Jason Lane = Cubs. Matt Murton/Cliff Floyd vs Carlos Lee = Astros. Mark DeRosa vs Craig Biggio = Wash. I still think the Astros will be below .500 this year.

I thought Guzman used to throw a decent change-up, but I didn't see one all game — or did I miss something? The Real Neal mentioned all those two-strike counts and no strikeouts. Isn't that when you throw the straight change? Miller for sure now as fifth starter. After that, we wait for a healthy Sean Marshall. There's nobody else.

"I'm worried pretty much about tomorrow," Prior said. "In four, five days, I'll probably be throwing. I'm just going out and working on things and doing what I can control. Today was a good day. There are still a lot of things to improve on, so just keep working on those. It was a good outing." Hmm...

and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Murton/Floyd's output is on par or possibly better than Carlos Lee

Spoken like a true Cubs fan. The good Ensberg is an 8.5 WARP player. Ramirez is a 6 WARP player. Berkman is slightly better than Lee probably 9 vs 8 or 8.5. Berkman is fast and a smart base runner. He just looks silly running. In 502 at bats Lane/Scott combined for 25 HR's and 82 RBI's last year. Lane is a good fielder, Lane average. 5.3 WARP combined. Jones used 31 extra at bats to hit two more HR's and drive in two fewer runs, 4.2 WARP. They also have the best defensive SS in the game, by far. I would probably take the Cubs left fielders over Lee though.

THE DEFENSE OUT THERE IS HORRIBLE TODAY! Whatever Lou is trying is NOT working so far. Geez...

And my comment was that the first six hitters are dangerous. Burke, Biggio,Ensberg,Berkman, Lee, Scott will score a lot of first inning runs.

Biggio isn't exactly trending upwards .246/.306/.422 last year sub Loretta for Biggio and they may have something going, a lot depends on Burke and Loretta keeping a reasonable OBP.

Can't help it, Cubbie Kool-Aid is too good. Seriously now, there is no reason to believe Luke Scott will hit like he did last year over a full season -- he's at most a .270/20/60 -- which is Jones's downside. Lane is indeed a good fielder, but he hit .201 last season. About Ensberg, yeah -- he was an eight win player back in 2005, but he's done that exactly once in his career. His other three full seasons have peaked at five wins. Ramirez has been in the high fours-low fives consistently during his career, and he's just hitting his prime. There is no contest between Berkman's and Lee's defense; Lee's FRAA the last three full seasons have been: 14, 18, 15. Berkman's? -5, -2, 1. Ten FRAA points equal a win, so Lee's added an extra 1.5 wins just by counting his defense. Berkman is average at best, on defense. Berkman's career SB% is 61%; Lee's? 69% in almost 80 more attempts. I do agree that Everett is the best fielding player in the game. But his bat is just anemic.

Gameday says 4.1 UP for Guzman, 6 ER, 3 BB, 0 K how'd he look though? only one XBH seems encouraging.... Blanco caught today huh? I thought when he was behind the plate pixie dust came out of the pitchers arms and all the pitchers threw the perfect pitch at the perfect time? :)

"how’d he look though? only one XBH seems encouraging…." He just couldn't finish up batters. Defense also screwed up his line.

He just couldn’t finish up batters. Naturally I blame Henry Blanco for this, he should have called a better pitch.....

looks like Gameday switched up on me again, back to 3.1 IP, 5 ER for Guzman, 1 BB, 0 K and if Floyd misplayed Iguchi's ball into a triple, 7 singles don't worry me much... Rocky with another 1.2 IP of scoreless ball... Is Wuertz coming out in the 8th?

Wuertz in.

Wuertz just owned Wiki Gonzalez -- fastball 89mph, slider 80mph, fastball 89mph, fastball and nasty slider to strike him out.

Wuertz just owned Wiki Gonzalez Wuertz and about 10,000 other pitchers in baseball. :) Encouraging news nonetheless....

Nice inning for Michael Wuertz, he's back to his usual high eighties and the slider is in mid-season form.

Carlos, WARP includes defense. Scott is likely to hit worse, but Lane is not going to hit .201 either. And I believe I said 'the good ensberg' didn't I? I mean good as in MVP candidate good.

Oh yeah Cherry came in with the bases full of O'malley baserunners and no one out. Allowed one runner to score. Cubs are 2nd and 3rd with no one out top of the 9th after another Fox late inning hit. Ump has a really wide strike zone.

I'm guilty of forgetting WARP included defense. And yes, but what are the odds of Ensberg posting another 2005? His track record indicates he's more likely to be outhit by Aramis Ramirez than to outhit him.

"Cubs are 2nd and 3rd with no one out top of the 9th after another Fox late inning hit." Fox's swing is sweet.

McGhee with a bases clearing double to tie them up. Jenks still hasn't gotten anyone out. He got ahead 0-2 on Pie then threw 4 straight balls.

Rob G.: "bummer news for Manny, Bochy says Lincecum will probably start in AAA." Yeah that SUCKS!! I told Carlos yesterday I thought that was going to be the case, but I was hoping it wasn't. As bad as the Giants bullpen is, don't be surprised if he ges a call pretty quick if he starts out well in Fresno.

'2005? His track record indicates he’s more likely to be outhit by Aramis Ramirez than to outhit him. ' Pretty good if he is healthy. He has a good idea at the plate, he got in that late season swoon in 2005, and was hurt all last year, which is supposed to be better now. McGhee gets doubled up on a line drive to 2nd. Hero to goat in about 2 seconds.

McGehee! That's what we were looking for, a righty infielder who can deliver clutch RBIs. (McGehee is AZ Phil's boy.)

better chance of Ramirez having a career year at 28 than Ensberg at 30, I'll say that. Power hitter with low K totals are a tough breed to find, eventually Ramirez is going to put together 6 solid months of hitting and be an MVP candidate. Ensberg though will bounce back, that OBP sure is nice and he'll probably be back to the 270's this year.

Rob G, BP scooped The Book on that by about 2 seasons. They know they're WARP is too low, it was illustrated by that really bad Tigers team from a few years back. But it is still OK for comparing a third basmen to a third basemen, even if they're replacement level player isn't good enough. Well, besides the whole defense, productive outs and baserunning thing.

And throwing for outfielders, forgot that one.

reading the comments, seemed to have some problems with how they calculate their defensive numbers too and how they add them up with the offense.... but i agree, comparing peer-to-peer doesn't seem to be much of an issue. Just no one should be thinking that Ensberg actually is good for 8 wins or anything.... BP actually now has SUPERVorp (no really, SUPERVorp), which is VORP with a defensive component and supposedly addresses the too low threshold..

superVORP...where DHs become twice the ballplayers they once were...i hear travis hafner has a superVORP of 6343258638526348532658632485643856348.99

well as a DH it wouldn't effect Hafner at all actually compared to other DH's that don't field either. Do you not think Hafner is the best (or one of the best) DH's in the game?

E-Man: "Whatever Lou is trying is NOT working so far." Hey, LouPa says they are working on fundamentals and he is fiery toward players who don't play well, so that is all that matters...:)

Rob G.: "WARP has some serious problems as a stat." I think there are more than a few of us who thinks you can replace WARP with many a stat in that sentence.

The thing that most bothers me with VORP, well for pitchers it is stupid, it just is a function of ERA*innings with improper home/road factors built in. For hitters though, they need to take out IBB's, or at the very least, take them out of EQA. You shouldn't be rewarded based on the decision of the opposing manager.

yeah, yeah Manny...Batting Average has some serious problems as a stat too. So do pitcher wins.

'So do pitcher wins. ' I still say if you factor in umpires and scoring conditions you'll find wins is a lot better stat than most of the stathead community thinks it is. What's wrong with batting average?

Rob, at least batting average is not a weird combination of statistics. What percent of the time that a batter came to bat did he get a hit? Batting average. Nice and simple.

Mystery post of the day: "‘So do pitcher wins. ‘ I still say if you factor in umpires and scoring conditions you’ll find wins is a lot better stat than most of the stathead community thinks it is. What’s wrong with batting average?" Was this said by The Real Neal or Chad?

I still say if you factor in umpires and scoring conditions you’ll find wins is a lot better stat than most of the stathead community thinks it is. Good luck proving that one.. What’s wrong with batting average? Same thing that is wrong with VORP or Win Shares or whatever, someone putting too much faith into something that ultimately doesn't tell us the whole picture. But like VORP or Win Shares or WARP, it has its uses. But I assume you think I was saying there was something wrong about how it's calculated, my apologies for the confusion. Rob, at least batting average is not a weird combination of statistics. What percent of the time that a batter came to bat did he get a hit? Batting average. Nice and simple. Ah yes, because it's too complicated but possibly tells us more, it should be dismissed. Because it's simple and tells us little it should be praised, rewarded and deified.

Well, you see, I actually explained my reasoning, rather than just saying 'Wins good' and dragging my woman by her hair back to the cave. Oswalt, for instance had a favorable umpiring last year (I think about .97 runs factor, but the spreadsheet is on my laptop with no juice) and as I recall he faced the weakest opposing OBP of any of the 2006 Cy Young candidates last year. That's why I wasn't so quick to annoint him the rightful winner like Rob G. did. I've kicked around doing something about scoring conditions (wind, sun, time of day anything else you guys can think of that would be in box scores?) but have been too lazy to actually do all that work.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/sortable/index.php?cid=105… As I recall I used 300 innings as the minimum sample size, but that's probably too high. It was a pain in the ass going through the game logs to get the umpires for Oswalt, so I stopped after him. I also am not sure if the assumption that all umpires affect all pitchers the same way is a valid one (actually I am pretty certain it is invalid) but when you look at the runs allowed numbers there is a lot of variability in there not as much as run support, but comprable.

curiously, what are you looking at? there strikeout and walk rates of each umpire and then seeing who's behind the plate the days Oswalt is pitching? Or beyond that?

for an example of the BS of the win stat, Bobby Jenks got one today after blowing a 3-run lead. I'm just kidding about that, but shouldn't they have a rule where you don't get the win if you blew the game or how about WFD (Win By Default). I'm open to name suggestions...

MANNY: "Hey, LouPa says they are working on fundamentals and he is fiery toward players who don’t play well, so that is all that matters…:) You are right, MANNY. I NEED to be more patient. Lou has just started the gig, right?

Wins are not a good stat for one season but a guy who wins 17 -20 games a year is a good pitcher. I don't care what team he's on.

Rob G.: "As our very own Cubnut noted on his other site, they work on fundamentals every spring." Exactly, my comment was said tongue-in-cheek, and I don't think E-Man picked up on that...:)

"As our very own Cubnut noted on his other site, they work on fundamentals every spring." Hell yeah I picked up on it MANNY! ;-) My reply was tongue-in-cheek as well. I wonder what kinds of drills Dusty had 'em doing over four years? Besides towel ones?

Sal Bando was a good player, and could be a decent HOF candidate, but the article was ridiculous. I don't know whether the guy is really intellectually dishonest or just stupid. The gist was to compare Santo to Bando during the years when both were playing and to conclude Santo was better. It ignores the fact that Santo was older and that Bando was not in the majors during Santo's best years.

E-Man: "I wonder what kinds of drills Dusty had ‘em doing over four years? Besides towel ones?" Here is a typical daily drills/sessions/practice schedule for Dusty: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM -- Proper Toothpick Chewing 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM -- How to Speak "Dude" 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM -- How to take advantage of eating at a Buffet (special guest instructor - Jim Hendry) 11:00 AM - 11:05 AM -- Infield Practice 11:05 AM - 11:10 AM -- Outfield Practice 11:10 AM - 11:30 AM -- Teaching Young Bat Boys When to Go Get Bats (special guest instructor - Darren Baker) 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM -- LUNCH BREAK 1:00 PM - 1:10 PM -- Batting Practice 1:10 PM - 2:00 PM -- 3rd Base Coaching...When to Wave Them Home? (special guest instructor - Wendall Kim) 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM -- How to stay Healthy (special guest instructors Mark Prior and Kerry Wood) 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM -- Philosophical Reading Time 20 minutes of actual baseball practice? No wonder why the Cubs didn't do better...:)

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM — How to take advantage of eating at a Buffet (special guest instructor - Jim Hendry) This one had me cracking up! Yes, I laugh at all of the Jim Hendry fat jokes! Keep 'em coming!

jim hendry is fat! how fat is he? he's soooooooo fat he has stage 3 clogging of his arteries and early signs of type 2 diabetes! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!

Also, I'm not sold on Pie's offense *or* defense (which is supposedly really good). I think he should spend 07 in the minors simply because he's not good enough yet.

Manny I like how you left out baserunning practice. Cause we know they didn't practice that.

Chad: "Manny I like how you left out baserunning practice. Cause we know they didn’t practice that." Baserunning practice is included in the batting practice. Remember when we played youth baseball where on your last swing you had to run it out around the bases. That was the Cubs baserunning practice.

"9:00 AM - 10:00 AM — How to Speak “Dude” LMAO!!! This is one of your best, DUDE! LOL!! HAHAHA!! 5 min. each for infield and outfield, and :10 for BP!! HA! DUDE!!

Maybe Hendry aquired Soriano for CF after he found out Pie's first name was "Felix" instead of "French Silk"! lol.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    booooooooooo

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
