Bloggers and Journalists, Part II

Goat Riders of the Apocalypse held a terrific roundtable concerning the relationship between sports bloggers and sports journalists earlier this month, featuring Paul Sullivan, Bruce Miles, Will Carroll and Paul Lukas.

GROTA invited me, Al Yellon, Joe Aiello, and Chuck Gitles of Bleed Cubbie Blue, The View from the Bleachers, and Ivy Chat, respectively, to contribute to the follow-up round table, which you can now read, here. It's more serious than entertaining, but I have to say, I was pretty proud of these two lines:

Looking for good reporting in the sports blogosphere is like when you played spin the bottle with the high school band: You might get the hot saxophonist, but more likely you get stuck with one of the woodwinds.

and

Regarding some of Paul Sullivan’s comments: I’ve already discussed at length his remark about how “most newspaper reporters have to actually go to college and get a degree” and pay their dues, and so forth.

But I wonder if Paul is aware that he split an infinitive in his sentence about the necessity of getting a college degree? ~grin~

My previous TCR commentary on the state of sports blogs and sports journalism can be found here.

damned ghetto html Journalism is not English.

1st - Great Job Trans, like always 2nd - I didn't think it was possible, but I actually dislike Paul Sullivan even more than I did 10 minutes ago. What a jackass

OMG! Dayn Perry mildly optimistic about the Cubs: "The Cubs may have the NL’s most powerful lineup (Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee should combine for 100-plus homers), but the rotation behind Carlos Zambrano will be the key. In particular, Jason Marquis and Wade Miller need to defy expectations. It’s a weak division, so the Cubs have a very real shot at the post-season. " He must have been in Vegas earlier in the week.

the SI baseball preview has Daisuke on the Cover (very predictable) with the title Fever Pitch. they predict the NL Central: StL, Cubs, Brewers, Astros, Pirates, Reds Playoffs: Mets over StL; Dodgers over Braves (wild card) Yankees over Indians; Angels over Red Sox (wild card) NLCS: Dodgers over Mets ALCS: Angels over Yankees WS: Angels over Dodgers Basically I'm pretty happy to fly under the SI radar. Let the season begin already. Mets/Cards tomorrow night.

angels vs. dodgers has to be the most trendy offseason baseball WS prediction. the ESPN guys have been wearing out the love of both teams recently. hell, i like both team's chances to be competitors, but the hype is getting large all over. did people notice that boston is fielding a hell of a team or something?

Well, I don't comment too often on here, but I read you guys every day. Just wanted to say GO Cubs! before the season started! Also, if you guys are on an online chat thing, please link to it and I'll make sure to hop on there when I get the chance. Anyways, GO Cubs GO....Let's win this frickin' thing!!!!!

#5 e-man: “The Cubs may have the NL’s most powerful lineup (Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee should combine for 100-plus homers), but the rotation behind Carlos Zambrano will be the key" hence, the 2007 marketing slogan: "hill, z, and lilly then drink yourself silly".

and, with all prior apologies to ocsar wilde and bruce miles, "the difference between journalists and bloggers is that journalists are un-readable whilst bloggers are un-read".

I almost hate to bring up that a saxophone is also a woodwind instrument. I also hate to bring up that the girls that most guys go for are the flute players (although, to be fair, the occasional trumpet player gets a fair amount of attention).

Kurtis - Yes, I should have been smarter than that, I've always known they were a woodwind, but in my own mind, I always categorized them separately. And yeah, Trumpet players could get attention. But at my school, the pecking order was saxaphonists, trumpet players, and the rest of the woodwinds after that... And no, I'm not normally this much of a cavalier jerk about such things. But I thought it was a decent line BJS - I always thought it was one word. Ask Bruce Miles. (not because he is one, far from it; but because for anyone who reads the original article, he brings it up.)

    agreed and agreed.

he walked off on his own, but we may not find out for a few days how this will impact the club.

Looked like a hamstring rather than a knee, not sure if that’s better or worse.

steele leaves the game with a hamstring or knee injury.  sigh.

...and a madrigal "non-error" leads to a sac fly for a tie game.  nice.

having a ball clank off your glove, but still getting it count as a hit because it was hit hard is a nice stats gift.

For sure. This lineup isn’t exactly stacked as is, and subbing out a Cooper or even a Tauchman for Madrigal won’t do it any favors.

the ESPN bottom graphic taking up 1/8th of the screen sucks.

i only use ESPN during baseball season and i'm forced to watch a baseball broadcast designed to be broadcast in sports bars and betting parlors where the news/scores of other games is as important as what you're actually tuned in to watch.

morel triple to start the season....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.
