Chat Decision

I'm having all kinds of fun trying to get in contact with our web administrator, so my apologies for the delay on deciding this. We basically have the old stand-by with dolphin sounds, Parachat. Everyone who cares about this issue is familiar with it so I won't get into it much. The other option is called Geesee which some have been using during the preseason. The web administrator sort of just put it up there for us a long time ago, but I've grown to appreciate some of its features. - Seems to load quicker - Less obstrusive ads - Embedded into our site design - You can register your nickname The biggest detriment to the program is that anyone who visits the Geesee home page can find our chat and we end up with some folks who are a bit baseball challenged. They do have a new password-protected chat room which we can set-up which would eliminate that problem and which also allows some admin features where we can boot troublemakers and such not. I'd probably prefer the Geesee program for the reasons outlined, particularly the faster loading and nickname registering. But we shall do whatever the masses decide. So go vote, we'll give it until Tuesday. And don't forget to enter our preseaon prediction contest which closes at 11am CST tomorrow. Trans - Viva la Parachat! Viva la Resistance!

Comments

Two arguments for Parachat 1. Sound effects 2. Neifi Ninjas.

Me too. now why the heck isn't the message board registering my messages? Rob must be trying to crush the Parachat Resistance.

We must eliminate these Parachat troublemakers! Parachat is old and tired like a Chuck Norris joke. Down with Parachat!

We will look back at your blaspheme and smile, as we watch you hang for your treasonous crimes, Mister Whipple.

Also, I didn't see this perusing any of the other threads. Sun-Times is reporting that Z's agent has said that the negotiation deadline has been extended "for an indefinite amount of time".

"Hopefully, we won't have to use that adorable redhead at catcher." said Piniella. He likes him! He likes him!!

I'm on a work (read: government) computer, so I can only seem to access the old fashioned board here, the chat stuff doesn't seem to load. Gets me my Az-Phil-insider-info fix, works like a champ =)

Hi, Cubs fans! I thought you'd be interested to try out our new Cubs-related Flash game at Red Hot Mama, just in time for the opening series with the Reds. If you enjoyed Baby Bear Boo-Boos from Opening Day 2006, you'll *LOVE* Whack a Cub. It's whacky fun for the whole family! Can hardly wait till tomorrow. Go Reds! XOXO

To those who criticize Parachat: I stare at you with disdain and utter a ~Yell1~. But in all seriousness, if you don't like Parachat, you probably have B.O.

If Parachat loses, I'll have to get me my ~shotgun~ If it wins, it will make me go ~boing~

The biggest detriment to the program is that anyone who visits the Geesee home page can find our chat and we end up with some folks who are a bit baseball challenged.
Bah, the nonelitist in me votes for Geesee. The elitist in me says I haven't the time for musing the arbitrary. ESPN just said Cub's & Z are "very close" to a deal 5/80-5/85 range. I looked briefly and didn't see any posts on this yet. I hope I'm not double-posting. :-|

manny posted the link already. Sorry Rob. I couldn't help but notice that Hendry likes to use certain deadlines as a bargaining tool. Like with Ramirez, Lee, and now Z. It's like he intentionally waits until the last minute, then tries to "rush" the contract negotiations. I think it must work, at least it did with Lee. And Z has really "changed his tune" in the past couple weeks.

http://chadscubschat.blogspot.com I vote for me! Anyway, I don't care which forum we use. All I know is that I'll be at my chat spot (parachat) until this place has an official answer. Or use mine full time. I've been here long enough, I think there is no reason that I can't have some official presence here. Well, besides being the resident anti-sabre Geiko caveman.

Parachat is just too good. And I agree with Crunch, YEEHAW.

It's 14-14! This first game starts in about 10 hours!!!! I'm starting to feel ill, probably shouldn't go to work in the AM. We've got ATL v Philly at 12:05 on TBS NYY v TB on ESPN at 12:05 CUBS v CIN at 1:05 on the duece and probably WGN or CSN BOS v KC at 3:10 on ESPN BAL v MIN on ESPN2 at 6:05 TEX v LAA at 9:05 on ESPN2 F@&K March Madness, April madness is where it's at. April is more mad.

wbbm radio is reporting that tribune executives spent the entire weekend reviewing purchase proposals from sam zell, and 2 los angeleans. zell is reported to have the inside track. wbbm stated that tribune hoped to announce a deal before today's markets opened. i did not hear anything concerning the cubs specifically.

from Briefing.com Tribune appears to be nearing a deal with Zell - WSJ (32.11 ) The Wall Street Journal reports Tribune (TRB) late yesterday appeared to be firming up a deal to sell itself to Sam Zell, according to people familiar with the matter. Over the weekend, Tribune's special committee of the board reviewed competing offers from Mr. Zell and a joint bid from Eli Broad and Ron Burkle. Both offers propose taking the co private using an employee stock ownership plan. Tribune was negotiating late last night and pressing for better terms from both Mr. Zell and Messrs. Burkle and Broad, according to people familiar with the matter. Despite the late wrangling, it appeared that Mr. Zell was likely to clinch the deal, these people said. Under the terms of his offer before the last-minute talks, Mr. Zell was expected to put in less than $300 mln in equity, a fraction of the co's total value of about $7.9 bln, not counting Tribune's existing $4.5 bln in debt. The deal would then unfold in two steps, according to a person familiar with its structure. In the first step, Mr. Zell would invest his equity and receive convertible preferred stock in Tribune. Then, Tribune would borrow money and pay out about $17.50 a share to shareholders. If approved, the co would be taken private, with shareholders receiving an additional payout and the majority of the co being held by an employee stock ownership plan, which would roll future contributions to employee 401(k) funds into the ESOP.

Sick today!!!!!!!! Cooler of Coors Light next to me. Cheetos on the end table. And we start the day out 1/2 game ahead of the Cardinals. I just wet myself with glee. Hooray Cubs. Joey

WGN-AM reporting this morning (8 am EDT) that Sam Zell is Your New Owner of the Tribune Company, according to WSJournal I like the old noisy version of chat- I can work in the lab and still (essentially) hear what's going on, usually with about 10-15 second lead time over streaming audio! I would also worry that you all would uninvite me from the secret GeeSee backroom for "cogniscenti only"...or as Orwell would say, "Some pigs are more equal than others." :-P

Parachat and Geesee both stink, although I voted for the latter. I especially like how parachat freezes, and when you try to reload it, it tells you you're still signed up. (I'd miss that.) If you're going to root for the mostly-futile, permanent underdog (Parachat), you might as well root for the Cubs. Oh, wait...

I wonder if anything will change for the Cub's. Probably not, except it's more likely they'll be sold off. Any business experts out there?

Rynox, I'm no business expert, but I did sleep at a Super 8 this weekend. Really, I did. Make no mistake about it, an investment/venture capital guru like Zell has no interest in running a business per se. Think of each company like an individual stock to most of us....easily bought and sold....and individually worth more than the whole, usually. The value of each, company split off and sold separately, is worth more than if the entire group sold together. That'sthe plan...buy low or high...but sell higher. With that said, the CUBS generate more cash than the US Mint. If he has a "Jones" for a pro-sports team, he could hold on for his personal "entertaintment", ala George Steinbrenner-Mark Cuban. If not, the Cubs will be sold again in 2-3 years. I think we all should get together and offer a leveraged buy out of the Cubs. There are enough people on here to do it.....and with Cubster's(the surgeon) financial backing we'd be in great shape to get started. All I ask is to be the third base coach...it's all I want out of life before I die. Joey

It's a done deal; Zell is announcing he will sell the Cubs after the 2007 season. Let the bidding begin.

Not the biggest shock in the world, but the Cubs are officially for sale: (Chicago) Tribune Company announced today that it plans to sell the Chicago Cubs and the company's 25 percent interest in Comcast SportsNet Chicago after the conclusion of the 2007 baseball season. The sale is expected to be completed in this year's fourth quarter. "The Cubs have been an important part of Tribune for more than 25 years and are one of the most storied franchises in all of sports," said Dennis FitzSimons, Tribune chairman, president and chief executive officer. "In our last season of ownership, the team has one mission, and that is to win for our great fans." Tribune has long-term contracts in place for Cubs programming on WGN-TV, Superstation WGN, WGN-AM Radio and Comcast SportsNet Chicago. The company was a founding partner when Comcast SportsNet Chicago was launched in 2004 and holds a 25 percent stake the network, which will broadcast 72 regular season Cubs games in 2007. Tribune purchased the Chicago Cubs and historic Wrigley Field in 1981. Attendance has soared in recent years, setting a record of 3,170,184 fans in 2004. Total attendance again surpassed 3 million in 2005 and 2006. The sale of the team is subject to the approval of Major League Baseball.

My hope has always been a dyed-in-the-wool, total Cubs Diehard, who is also wealthy beyond belief, should buy the team. There HAS to be someone like this out there. Someone who will agonize with the rest of us, and will not tolerate a loser. Someone with the smarts to put a great management team in place, and NEVER hire someone like Andy McFail.

Very interesting developments. E-Man, I certainly agree that it will be best to have an owner who is also a fan, but I don't know that we need a Superfan to own the team. I want an owner who can remain objective at all times and make decisions based on the facts and numbers and not loyalty. Hey, Peter Angelos loves the Orioles, but he has destroyed that franchise. In any case, the 2007 season just got a little more interesting. For the first time in perhaps 100 years. the owner of this team is highly motivated to win THIS YEAR. Not down the road, not next year, but NOW.

"I want an owner who can remain objective at all times and make decisions based on the facts and numbers and not loyalty." Well, tell that to Steinbrenner. I am fine with someone like the Reinsdorf group, but with more money. The Pizza guy in Detroit would be fine, as well. Mark Cuban - slam dunk. Whoever it is - I am sure they will raise my Season Ticket prices for next year.

433: "For the first time in perhaps 100 years. the owner of this team is highly motivated to win THIS YEAR. Not down the road, not next year, but NOW." Does the Trib really want to win now based on the fact they are selling the team for sure? Isn't it in the best interests of the sale price to actually have the team improve this year, but not win it as it might take away a small part of the allure of the team? OK, when is the office pool of how much the Cubs and ancillary things (stadium, TV, etc) will go for. I say $950 million.

E-Man: "Whoever it is - I am sure they will raise my Season Ticket prices for next year." Actually we might have a better shot of them again not raising season ticket prices next year with a new owner as they might not want the first impression of themselves (the new owner) to be raising ticket prices. But either way it doesn't matter as the Cubs ticket prices are so undervalued it is not even funny. The could almost double the prices and it would still be very fair pricing when you compare it to the rest of MLB.

Agreed 433. I was thinking of Dan Snyder and the Redskins, but same thing. An overinvolved rich guy could screw up the team even worse. But on the bright side, suddenly, there's a lot more at stake for Trib Co and its new Dear Leader Zell.

I'm confused. Does this mean that the Cubs are not part of the sale to Zell and the Trib still owns them, but are committed to sell at the end of the season?

Dyson: "Does this mean that the Cubs are not part of the sale to Zell and the Trib still owns them, but are committed to sell at the end of the season?" Yep, that is correct. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2821964 Tribune Co. said Monday it plans to sell the Chicago Cubs at the end of the 2007 baseball season, putting one of its most valuable assets on the block as it simultaneously announced that real estate magnate Sam Zell was acquiring the media conglomerate. So basically Zell is buying everything but the Cubs stuff (Wrigley, the team, CSN, etc.)

dyson- i believe zell is buying everything, but as he is also a shareholder in the white sox he needs to divest himself of 1 interest or the other. sounds like the plan is for him as the new owner is to sell the cubs and the connected properties.

So team decisions from here on out will be solely business decisions. Fan-freeking-tastic. Hope you got a winner put together already Hendry.

"So team decisions from here on out will be solely business decisions. Fan-freeking-tastic." This implies that they haven't been business decisions under Tribco. Actually the pending sale should be and has been a good thing for the Cubs. Since a new owner can depreciate player salaries over five years, the Cubs have been incentivised to sign players to big contract (as they did this off season). This would enable the new owner to generate significant profits (cash) while showing losses on a tax basis. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/20030107daily.shtml

There is an additional article in today's WSJ that explains the unique aspects of Zell's bid for the Tribune, specifically regarding the participation of the ESOP into the buyout. There is also the matter of the Trib being classified by the IRS as an "S" corporation, which also plays into the ESOP participation. It's a good bet by Zell, primarily because the employees will be on the financial hook for the performance of the company - he only loses minimally if the stock tanks, but the upside is potentially significant.

ah...limited liability corporations...what a gift to the american people.

I'm with Manny is my dislike of Parachat. May I suggest leaving the voting open a little longer than one day into the season? Perhaps keep both for a time and let the chatters decide which room they want to hang out in or if they want to hang out in both. Two rooms full of Cubs snark is better than one, no?

Nobody votes after a few days, so it's not much point to leaving the voting open. I'd rather have everybody together in one place as is... It's was a dead heat last time I checked.

I also think the easiest decision might simply be to offer both chat systems, and let the individual users sort it out over the season. It could wind up that we have two healthy chat rooms going, with lots of inter-crossing, or two healthy chat rooms going, with separate themes and styles, or that one of them dies a slow death, when actually forced to compete with the other for users. If it stays close, can't we just go with both? the purpose of voting is to let the readers decide, and we seem to be deciding that we like each of them.

[...] A few site notes before we get started. Don’t forget to get your vote in on your chat program of choice. Whatever is ahead tomorrow morning when I check will be the winner for the year. [...]

Oh shit, I don't care, but yeah I'm not going to post links for both chat programs for each day. Pick one and go with it. If folks really have that a big a preference, feel free to advertise in the comments. Your talking 10-20 people on most days, occasionally we get a bit more, so dividing it up would be kind of lame. Parachat up by one at the moment...

I didn't realize you needed to enter the link manually, each day. I thought it was as simple as embedding one of each link and letting people find them. But I strongly disagree with your assessment of the matter. We're talking about a function of TCR that, while it might not attract the most readers, does attract many of the most devoted, long-term readers, those who have been here for years, making dozens of comments a week, or even a day. And if they're as divided on the matter as the numbers seem to indicate, it would be nice to not let 49% lose out to the 51%, entirely. If it's really a matter of needing to post two links each day, fine. But if all the world can find the two embedded links on the side of the page, which wouldn't need any maintenance, then what's the problem? No one needs to be reminded where the embeds are....

hehe, the chat link has been on the right for over a month and you didn't even know it existed although I mentioned it a few times in the posts and many other readers have been asking where the chat link is in the comments. So unless it's put up every day in the thread people forget about it, plus there's no room in the right author's box for anymore links. So then it's a matter of creating the the two chat links to a chat page that has both chat programs which I then need the web administrator to do which is a big pain in the ass because he hasn't been doing anything for us within the last month or so and I'd really like to put this decision behind us and move on... That all being said, if you want to spearhead the 2 chat movement and find an acceptable resolution that works, go for it. It's certainly not something I'm all that passionate about it. I just want to find where everyone is as easily as possible. 2 chat programs seems like a bigger pain that it's worth and I think we come to the chat to talk to other Cubs fans, not for dolphin sounds and not because I can have a picture in my profile.

Ok, point taken, although I am going to plead laziness in my own defense. But yeah, I see the point about feeling the need to re-post the links each day. (Do remember not to wear yourself out too much with the game previews! We need you in good health!) Whatever wins, that's great. Not trying to cause problems, actually trying to reduce them! (as usual, my plan to be helpful is perhaps going awry.)

I vote for Parachat, Geesechat or Spamalot or whatever its called has got to go.

TCR wouldn't be the same without para-shat. Damn that other program that probably works properly. Preserve America's freedom - vote parachat.

Parachat is a threat to TCR security. Transmission and the rest of you Parachat lovers are obviously in bed with the terrorists. I don't litter and I don't like Parachat. I'm sorry some folks like Parachat and are therefore obviously racist and in favor of murder and stealing.

Walker was a complimentary piece who was well past his prime. Edmonds, Holliday, Ozzie Smith and a few others were good trades. Notably, they have almost always been quiet in the free agent market. But the fundamental workings of the organization were always based primarily upon the constant output of a well oiled minor league organization. That organization has ground to a halt. And when did that hard stop start to happen? Right at the beginning of the Goldschmidt/Arenado era, perpetuated by the Contreras signing, followed by the rotation purchases during the last offseason. The timing is undeniable and, in my mind, not coincidental.

Again, we are all saying that player development became deemphasized. I’m just linking it directly to the recent trades and involvement in the free agent market. I don’t see how the two concepts can be decoupled.

  • Charlie (view)

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.
