Three pitching gems in four games. UNBELIEVABLE! Who would think that the "Ace's" was the clunker? If the trend continues, we'll be in a lot of games in 2007. Well - Master of the Obvious, huh?

This Rich Hill guy, he's pretty good, no? I'd be interested in his ML pitching line from Aug 1 of last year to today. It has to be at or nearly at the top in MLB.

Feeling very good right now. Three very good/excellent pitching performances so far, and one klunker by the guy we aren't really worried about. If Miller is even a .500 pitcher this could be a very interesting year. Oh, and in case anyone stumbles, Mark Prior and Guzman are waiting in the wings. Nice.

The Wood Game was so incredible watching it live. I was dumbfounded. His 5th ML start, are you kidding me? What a sad turn things have taken since then. Wood definitely makes me sadder than Prior.

ERIC: What a golden memory for you! You must be so bummed seeing what could have been... On a brighter note - if the Cubs should win tomorrow, it will be the first time the team will be above .500 since April 2006?

"Wood definitely makes me sadder than Prior." My friends at work are sick and tired of hearing how Kerry Wood was the greatest "what could have been" in baseball history. I have his 20k game on dvd and I bust it out every now and again.

Meh, without Prior we wouldn't have even been in the 2003 playoffs and wouldn't have the 2003 Braves/Bartman memories in the first place. He carried the team through the last half of 2003, and we barely sneaked into the playoffs thanks to him. *this out-of-context Mark Prior advertisement sponsored by the 433 Mark Prior Defense Team

Dude, Prior was awesome that year but if he reached 100% of his potential we are talking about a hall of fame pitcher, like say, Tom Glavine. If Wood reached 100% potential, we are talking one of the greatest pitchers of all time.

Since I like to own up to my own mistakes, I predicted this last night:
Just wait until the Cub’s can’t get anything going against Bush tonight. Believe it or not, I think this will be the best pitching matchup and best pitched game of the series. I’m stoked.
Wow, was I wrong. It's an understatement to say Bush looked real uncomfortable in the first. I think he just got rattled early and lost control of the inning. Somewhere in mid-2nd inning he really settled down and shut down the Cub's like I expected. Hill continues to pitch well. The most impressive thing to me is when I'm watching I try to guess what the pitcher's going to throw. With most of the staff I can guess about 2/3 of the pitches without seeing the signs, just based on counts & situations, but it seems like I'm *always* wrong with Rich Hill.

Chad:
Never fear, Steve Rosenbloom has already decreed that Marquis and Lilly were good signings and Soriano is a bust. I’m so glad we have guys like that. I’m surprised that he didn’t declare Cesar Izturis and his .350 batting average the next Ernie Banks.
Worst... analysis... ever. He gives blogs a bad name. =)

I am loving the way Derossa is hitting in the back of this lineup! Who would have guessed that the first 3 HR's would be Derossa and Cedeno?

yeah, if Hill drops down a couple times a game like that on a lefty, they'll never hit him all year. ex-Cub pitcher report... Mitre got the loss, 5 IP, 5 R but only one earned, 6 K's Nolasco got tagged for 3 runs in 1.1 IP right after that. Ryu got the win with 1.1 IP and a K and a 3-run comeback in the 9th off Ryu J. Williams got the loss, 6 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 K

poor 1st outing by Veal in AA 3.2 IP , 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K and the loss Samardzija's debut in Hi-A 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K no decision Ben Petrick with the loss in relief

scout.com story on Pawelek... his move to the bullpen is temporary, felt he didn't get enough reps in spring training and they feel there's a flaw in his mechanics that can be worked on better in the bullpen. Said he came into camp "overly" in shape this year. Article made it seem like it wasn't that big a deal..... Harvey has hamstring issues btw if you're looking for him...

I noticed that too. But I'll take a quieter TCR for a big Cub win anyday! And Rich Hill is badass, I'm so glad we didn't trade him for Pierre...remember at that time Hill's name being thrown around?

And we mocked Hendry for calling him untouchable. I guess that's why he's a Major League GM.

Prior and Wood .... what a shame. Though Prior may not be done yet. What really impressed me about Hill was the sixth inning. After the HR and the two errors, he settled down and shut the door. That shows that he has terrific confidence in his stuff. Kudos, too, to Barrett for calling a good game. I listened on the radio, so I couldn't see if HIll was shaking off many signs; but to judge from how fast Hill was working, my guess is that Barrett threw down a few fingers and that was that. For those of you who saw the game, how did Guzman look?

Also--Yes, it's early, but Mark De Rosa is looking like a really good signing at $4MM/year. He's picking up right where he left off with Texas last year, and if he keeps that up, he'll easily outproduce anything we ever got from Walker or Grudzielanek. Though I must say, Grudzy was pretty decent, I never disliked him.

Nothing anomalous about that Rich Hill start. The guy came as advertised. I think those of us who criticized Hendry last year for NOT dealing off Hill when his trading value was 'at its peak', are rightfully keeping quiet. Say goodbye to the Wood/Prior Era and say hello to the Z/Hill Era. Chicago, I present to you your new co-aces!!

"Rosenbloom: What a moron." Yes. yes. How this guy got a radio show, is right up there with the great Andy Masur getting a dream job in San Diego, with more "Go figures" in broadcasting.

Yes, Danny Noonan pitched a helluva game last night. That's it! Noonan! I was thinking he looked like a skinny Jon Lieber.

Danny Noonan pitched a helluva game last night. ----- See the ball, BE the ball...

10man:
Say goodbye to the Wood/Prior Era and say hello to the Z/Hill Era.
All I can say is Z is going to feel some self ascribed pressure to perform today considering these last 3 starts. If the crew rattles him a little, I expect a full-fledged Z implosion.

I have to say the thing I'm most geeked up about is Lou Piniella. Just watching Theriot, Cedeno, Hill and Guzman I realize how Lou is focused on developing young talent. We've never had a manager since I've been around (42 yrs) that developed our young talent. And just look at the pitch counts and walk totals of our pitchers. What if Lou had been around in 03 and 04? If Theriot continues to develop and we end up needing another starter, is it too early to start thinking about a Matt Murton + pitcher for Dontrelle Willis? The situation of Felix pie could force that. Even if we kept Soriano in center and moved Jones to left, we could play Pie in right. Just a thought... As for DeRosa, I like a stick in the 7 hole. Lets keep him there. I like Jones in the two hole. His throws from the outfield, however, don't look any better than last year. If the Cubs were to play songs for players when they come to bat, I think "Great balls of Fire" would be perfect for Barrett!

Rob G. — April 7, 2007 @ 12:11 am poor 1st outing by Veal in AA 3.2 IP , 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K and the loss Samardzija’s debut in Hi-A 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K no decision Ben Petrick with the loss in relief =================================== Besides what ROB G wrote... In the Iowa game, CF Felix Pie (batting 3rd) - 1-2 with a BB, two runs scored, left game with tight hamstring 1B Micah Hoffpauir (batting 4th) - 3-4 with two 2B and two RBI. RHP Randy Wells (starting pitcher) - 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 3 K, 87 pitches, 11/4 GB/FB (W 1-0) RHP Rocky Cherry - 1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 4 K LHP Clay Rapada - 0.1, K (got the last out) In the Tenn game (besides Donnie Veal's bad outing), 1B Brian Dopirak - 3-4 with a K Jake Fox got the night off after an 0-4 with 4 K and dropped fly ball opening night In the Daytona game, Jeff Samardzija had an 8/6 GB/FB. Tyler Colvin missed the game with an injury (type of injury not reported) suffered opening night. RHP Michael Cooper (26th round draft pick out of Cal last June and the closer at Boise last year) went 2.0 IP (8th and 9th innings), six up and six down.

Rob G. — April 7, 2007 @ 12:15 am Harvey has hamstring issues btw if you’re looking for him… ===================================== ROB G: That's correct. Ryan Harvey is still at EXST rehabbing from his hamstring injury. As I also mentioned earlier this week, CF Sam Fuld is at EXST with an oblique strain, INF Ryne Malone is rehabbing from knee surgery, and RHP Michael Phelps is rehabling from some type of leg injury (not sure specifically what type of leg injury, but he's been limping). Sean Marshall and Mark Prior are extending their pitch counts so they can join the rotation at Iowa, and Juan Mateo and Roberto Novoa (sore shoulders) and Kerry Wood (triceps) are also at EXST (no ETA for their return).

Hopefully Pie's alright. Anyone else hear that Cedeno was taking fly balls in the outfield? I heard Len briefly mention it last night.

I see that Rich threw only 78 pitches last night. I'm told that a mind-blowing 58 of them were strikes. That's phenomenal.

CF Felix Pie (batting 3rd) - 1-2 with a BB, two runs scored, left game with tight hamstring Like I tried to tell everyone before the season began, we need PIE for his defense off the bench now. Seasoned?? HAH! All he will get in Iowa is injured again. Didn't take long. And why has he been batting third and playing CF if he's supposedly going to be playing RF in place of Jones and batting 2nd or 8th for Chicago someday??

"If Theriot continues to develop and we end up needing another starter, is it too early to start thinking about a Matt Murton + pitcher for Dontrelle Willis?" IMO, under the new circumstances, I would think the only thing possible here is locking up Zambrano. It simply has to be done for the future of the team. One way or another, the Cubs simply have to have ONE ace pitcher. But - really - I'm not holding my breath on the team taking on any more payroll.

CWTP: Your obvious genius is very underappreciated here. It is a good time now to circulate your resume to some of the potential buyer groups of the Cubs and get a head start.

Did anyone mention yet that RICH HILL never had a 3 ball count last night? (according to the Brewers media team) Just Masterful!

"And why has he been batting third and playing CF if he’s supposedly going to be playing RF in place of Jones and batting 2nd or 8th for Chicago someday??" Because he is going to eventually bat 3rd and play right field for the Cubs at the major league level.

CUBSTER: Like it! But Moyer!? C'Mon - that's like 20 years ago! I don't even think of him as an "Ex-Cub" much anymore 'cause its been so long... I wonder if the Seattle bloggers have an "Ex-Pilot" or "Ex-Mariners" watch?

Because he is going to eventually bat 3rd and play right field for the Cubs at the major league level. Ah, that explains why he was batting leadoff last year at Iowa and this year in ST. And why they shortened and flattened his swing and turned him into a singles hitter, and why they sent him to AZ Fall League camp to work on base stealing-- just what you want batting third--- but how does playing CF in AAA help him play RF in Chicago?

I always like Jamie Moyer as a Cub, particularly since they had so few lefty starters that were developed from their system. Moyer also has that Digger Phelps connection to the area (as did Jeff Pico, each one married a Phelps daughter). When I see Moyer pitch it reminds me of a young Greg Maddux too. sigh.

FBynum defensive appearance only (LF)…does this qualify as an oxymoron? Don't know if you paid attention to Bynum's spring training but even though he couldn't hit a lick he still made the team because he had an unbelievable ST in the field. He was great at every position they tried him. A one-man highlight reel.

carmenfanzone:
I like Jones in the two hole.
I do too, at least until his bat heats up. Of course, in light of the prediction contest, I hope Izturis gets some bats in the #2 spot.

cwtp:

The same guy that would drop routine fly balls and bobble throws and in general looked lost on the field? Amazing.

He's still blooming in Baltimore. Corey Patterson was chosen to wear #42 in honor of Jackie Robinson. Meanwhile, here on the Left Coast, Vin Scully continued his scathing coverage of Juan Pierre's play in the outfield. Said again last night that if the Dodgers fail to make the playoffs it will be because of the poor defense of Pierre and Gonzalez. Just brutal. Puts Steve Stone to shame that's for sure. And yet nobody is calling for Scully's head on a stick and Pierre is still saying he loves playing for the Dodgers. Where's whiny Dusty when Juan needs him?

"Ah, that explains why he was batting leadoff last year at Iowa and this year in ST. And why they shortened and flattened his swing and turned him into a singles hitter, and why they sent him to AZ Fall League camp to work on base stealing– just what you want batting third— but how does playing CF in AAA help him play RF in Chicago?" Ah, you see, he's gonna hit leadoff when he gets to the big league for a while. You know, while players like Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Alphonso Soriano will hit behind him. Then he will be groomed for the 3 spot. Much like Barry Bonds did. So while in the minors, he'll also play center field and right field as that he can have experience playing both, as he will on the major league level. In 8 years when Soriano is gone, he'll move to right and we'll find a new young guy to play center. Did you know that Andre Dawson played center field once too? Stop being so obtuse.

Oh of course, for good measure, Sammy Sosa used to hit lead off and play center. Steroids or no steroids, Sosa would have moved down the order after a few years and over to right eventually. FWIW.

I think the real answer to my rhetorical question is Pie is hitting third, not leadoff, because Angel Pagan is hitting first. And Pagan is hitting first because he's ahead of Pie on the 40 man depth chart right now and they want to give him maximum plate appearances in case they need to bring him up. But Pagan can't hit his own butt right now.

Re: The Iowa Game. I went to it last night, and man was it cold. At least for Texas. My girlfriend and I left at the end of the sixth inning was how cold it was. Today's worse... I might expect a rainout. I thought Randy Wells looked pretty good, though he didn't seem to be throwing very hard. Very in control of things. The top 3 in Iowa's lineup, too, were very impressive, and pretty consistently tough on the Round Rock pitcher. If we can find a place for him, Eric Patterson is a really valuable hitter, IMO.

theriot is developing? what's he doing differently besides owning an OF'r glove? looks all the same to me. and about felix pie...why bat him 3rd/4th "just cuz" if the guys cant even find the gap...much less 350-400ft. over a fence? he'll develop...just because he hasnt got his power yet doesnt mean a move up in the lineup will suddenly make that bat pop. there's people who think him being there means he's doing crap to his swing based on nothing...probably based on the same dusty-crap that gets blanket applied as if dust made/broke/molded every player he touches with an iron fist in his image or something... let the kids play...

Dusty? oh he's busy contributing nothing to Baseball Tonight broadcasts. Levine just spoke with Hendry...not a whole lot to come out of it, a good deal of self-congradulations for Lilly & Marquis's performances. The only important note is that despite no progress with Z's impending deal, Hendry does not see the new ownership group becoming an obstacle in getting Z tied up. Apparently this Zell fella owns 225 apts alone in Chicago and of the reported $8.2b he's allegedly paying for the Trib Co's assets, he's "only" paying something like $500m out of his own pocket. Already rumors that he'll sell off the Chi Tribune and/or turn the Trib's property into luxury high rise condos. I think it's safe to say the entire package is strictly going to be a cash, redistribute and run situation. Wonder when the deal with new ownership takes over, Zell will hold onto majority ownership of Wrigley...then in 10 years when the Cubs build a new stadium in Hoffman Estates, he'll rip it down and build another high rise.

at least the cubs will get a new stadium finally...hehe woo...maybe zell will own the new parking garage and charge people $8 to park there.

are you kidding...$20 minimum to park anywhere near Wrigley...including the garage on Clark. Luckily a friend lives on Byron so I park for free.

BOGEY: "Hendry does not see the new ownership group becoming an obstacle in getting Z tied up." I heard it as well. Unfortunately, there was no concrete answer, no affirmations other than "we both want to get a deal done". You can bet that if he's not signed - its gonna cost the team an extra $15MM after the season is over.

well, that's wrigley...i dunno what zell wants to do with the place...not like he can tear it down, but he also dont have to sell the building to the new owner and can hold consessions/etc. hostage. it was just messing around more than anything...it would create a lot of "work" to not sell the team and either not require the new buyer to also buy or lease the existing stadium. they cant change a doorknob without permission at wrigley, so its doubtful its about to become condos any time soon. im a tourist when im at wrigley...take the train, park and ride...no issues...

CWTP: "Vin Scully continued his scathing coverage of Juan Pierre’s play in the outfield. Said again last night that if the Dodgers fail to make the playoffs it will be because of the poor defense of Pierre and Gonzalez. Just brutal." Maybe Scully is getting a little too old. Is he aware that the Marlins won the WS in 2003 with Pierre leading off and playing CF?

pierre just flat out lost a ball in CF last night...it was weird. and comparing steve "ego" stone and his near universal dislike by players in his era and currently to vin scully is weird, too. people actually care about vin, visit him in the offseason, and has respect for more than just being an old guy who's an institution. him and his wife are legend of off-field baseball. steve stone is nothing but criticism after criticism with a quick "told you so" followup when his shots in the dark hit a mark. he's a smart guy but he's caustic as hell and falls in love with his opinions.

oh yeah...and that still doesnt excuse what vin said...pretty reactionary stuff without merit. still...steve stone?

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.
