Comments

Alright, I'm blaming yesterday on Friday the 13th. So let's get a win. 4-6 looks a lot better than 3-7.

It's not even Tax Day and I'm already thinking "well, I guess that's the best lineup they could put out there, under the circumstances." Ugh

here's the thing about the saturday blackout shit this year: i can understand how while fox has a game on it's blacked out.....but today (and most saturday this year) FOX doesn't have a game on until 3 PM eastern/4 PM central. they are not broadcasting a game ANYWHERE while this game is going on, and yet it's blacked out?! why?! damn fox for starting their broadcasts in april this year, but it still doesn't make sense as to why the early games on a day like today are blacked out. grrr....

i don't think so rob.....doubt they would cut it off. as long as you start your game three hours before the scheduled televised game they'll let you finish. i'm pretty sure that's how it goes, from sunday afternoon/night experience.

there has been much complaining in the chat about the ump's really tight zone. all i got is audio, but it seems hill's not missing by much on most and having a hard time getting his curve called early.

sounded a little like berrian said "if i don't win it's a shame". which is also true. rich hill!

i wouldn't say the ump has been bad from my p-o-v. relatively consistent. some tough calls but eh... el duque giving up homers to the nats by the boatload.....3 today, the nats only had 4 all year coming up, 6-1 mets losing. since i wrote that el duque plunked the next batter and got thrown out, lots of arguing from randolph.

Heckuva day, Rich. We needed that, buddy. I'll be accepting applications to join the Rich Hill Fan Club through the evenng.

aren't we all glad we panicked after 9 games yesterday? chill people. hold on today, and lilly goes in the rubber match tomorrow. hit streak at 10 for lee!

SHOULD I SAY IT AGAIN>>>>>>> >>>THE RIOT CHANGES THE WHOLE LINEUP FOR THE BETTER. He's a tough out -- scrappy, sees pitches, gets on base, steals bases, and puts the ball in place. Love that kid.l......this buds for you

Matt Murton --job description: late inning DEFENSIVE replacement good grief

I dunno, Soriano's been struggling and Arroyo is far better vs righties. Soriano hit a weak grounder he barely beat out as is...

KUBZWIN

Yeah CWTP, I might have put Murton out there for Jones today, even though JJs a lefty. Jacque has struggled mightily against Arroyo (1 for his last 16 over the last two years.) Ah well, Floyd scored a couple of runs, got a hit. And we won. I'll take it. I'll go ahead and get that Rich Hill jersey order under way.

A couple of statistical oddities from Iowa that are fun while they last. CWTP mentioned one of these yesterday. F. Pie: 27 AB, 12 hits, 14 RUNS M Hoffpauir: 32 AB, 15 hits, 13 RBI Apparently, every time Pie gets on, Hoffpauir knocks him in. Also, if the Cubs ever decide to send Ohman down and make him EARN his ML roster spot, Walrond threw a nice six-inning two hitter yesterday. I know he can throw a breaking ball sixty feet. My favorite southpaw down on the farm is the guy AZ Phil affectionately calls Piggy, but the Cubs may still be thinking of him (if they're thinking of him at all) as starter/long reliever, which makes him redundant with Cotts.

Cubster and I were at the game today in FROZEN WF. The squeeze w/Uncle Cliffy on third caught us completely by surprise. We had a laugh over that one. I thought for a fleeting second as I saw Cliff start running before the pitch that he was gonna steal home! Also, D.Ward lumbering from 2nd base to score and literally flopping on Home like a beached whale was awesome!!

Yep, thanks E-Man, it was great to see you after about 25 years. We'll do it again soon. Maybe it's us that are the losing streak stoppers. It's nice to have Rich Hill working so quickly on such a cold (wind blowing in made it worse than the temp alone) day. --------- CMuskrat has an injury update on ARam/DeRosa, etc. http://tinyurl.com/36gazv Unfortunately it's completely worthless. She says ARam was "diagnosed with simple, but always lingering, tendinitis." ...for her to be such a witch when it came to responding to TCR staff, I'll tell you she should use that nasty streak more productively or learn how to ask a useful question once in a while so her writeups aren't always so sleepily vanilla. Like which tendon is inflammed? ...or what are they doing to treat this diagnosis? ...or what was the result of the arthrogram? ...or what condition were they concerned about that led to doing an invasive (dye injecting) procedure like an arthrogram instead of a conventional MRI? I suspect the arthrogram was normal (otherwise we would be hearing about it by now) and ARam has Dequervain's tenosynovitis (which I described on the previous thread as a tendonitis of the thumb extensors)...of course it's my best guess based on reading between the lines from conventional media reports. Dequervain's usually takes a few days to calm down and is treated with anti-inflammatory meds, therapy like ultrasound and occaisionally a cortisone shot.

Cubster. Thanks for chiming in on your take on these medical issues. It is greatly appreciated......

If you weren't able to catch the game today, a couple of observations based on the Comcast feed into mlb.com: Brenly pointed out immediately, and later proved, that Izturis was out of the batter's box when he squeeze bunted on a pitch that was way outside. The ump missed that, among many other things (mostly pitches on the corner) today. The Reds were apparently under orders to run every time Hill lifted his leg before a pitch. Even Adam Dunn joined in the fun and was able to steal second without a throw. Hill answered this by slide-stepping instead of kicking. They stopped running, except for Freel, who was picked off. The question is, can Hill be effective without the big kick. People have been trying to figure him out lately, and I've heard both Brenly and the Brewer manager say that Hill shows the hitter a lot of right knee and right elbow and they can't pick up the ball. Today, I didn't see any difference in Hill's effectiveness whether he kicked or not. The question of how certain lefty pitchers get hitters to swing late consistently on 89 mph fastballs will have to remain one of those imponderables. I'm just glad he's on our side. Bob Howry: I'm excited about how good he's going to be once he really gets command of this new offspeed pitch he's been working on. Today he got several called strikes on pitches in the low eighties. This really sets up his fastball. Brandon Phillips swung late on a third-strike fastball right down the middle. Howry also handled Adam Dunn easily by mixing speeds. Barrett deserves credit for calling a lot of offspeed pitches.

"The question of how certain lefty pitchers get hitters to swing late consistently on 89 mph" We were seeing 91 on the stadium "gun".

Outside anything previously mentioned I was curious to any commentary that someone might have on our quite pathetic to date leadoff hitter. I was counting on a lower than expected OBP but I didn't realize it was Sosa incarnate: outside breaking ball does the trick. Today was his first multiple hit game, second consecutive game being picked off and, out of 43 AB's 20 of them have come from behind the count. It is to the point that Arroyo intentionally walked Ward to get to the 'fonz. I won't just complain without offering some sort of solution. That being said it would be nice while ARAM is out to put Lee in the 4 slot, Fonz in the 3 slot and Theriot at leadoff. At least until Soriano comes out of this Sosa esque slump.

"I was counting on a lower than expected OBP but I didn’t realize it was Sosa incarnate: outside breaking ball does the trick. " Heard a former Nationals broadcaster from last year on WGN today. He was VERY complimentary re Sori, and remarked that he WILL get on track, and when he does, he will be a special player to watch. Truly 5-tool according to this gentleman. Let's give it a little more time and give the guy some love for 60 days - then we can let him have it!

Hill is the ace of the staff, though Lilly is good, too. Marquis has been as good as we could have expected. Zambrano? I wonder how the contract negotiations are going now???? Yeah, it has only been three starts for the guy but his head continues to concern me.

Cubster- Espn 1000 were talking about Aram, the guy on there said Aram had a x-ray that was negative, and one "other test that was negative too." I'm guessing that was your arthrogram. They said he's still day to day, with swelling around "the fleshy part between the wrist and hand."

Get off Z's back. He already has one more win in april then he did last year. And he's proven the last 3 years that he is the ace of this staff.

Wes:
And thankfully, Soriano made them pay for it.
Yeah, with a soft groundball infield hit to the SS. Really busted their balls. *sigh*

Yeah, with a soft groundball infield hit to the SS. Really busted their balls. *sigh* ---------------------------------------------- It got the job done....... 7-0 shutout today guys. And as bad as it's been at times this season, the rest of the Central hasn't done much better. After reading some of these comments, I'd think it was 1997 rather than 2007 if I didn't know better.

Jennings to DL for Astros.... what a wonderful time to gain some ground with Jennings and Carpenter on the DL

Little Nate Lewis:
And as bad as it’s been at times this season, the rest of the Central hasn’t done much better.
Oh, I'm no alarmists, as evidenced by comments from previous days, but to call what Soriano did "making them pay" is a stretch. I know he'll come around, too, but it's sort of embarassing when the opposing team walks your bench guy to pitch to your $136 million dollar slugger. Bleh!

JUAN PIERRE SITS! His 648 consecutive game streak is over because Grady Little has seen enough suck. BENCHED TONIGHT.

hehe, tonight on Baseball Tonight Baker said he spoke to Pierre the other day and told him that he needs to be more aggresive early in the count. Are you serious? The guy walks 12 times a year and swings at more first pitches than Nomar.

And at Iowa, Carlos Marmol throws hat into the Cubs #5 starter derby, goes 5.1 IP (80 pitches), 5 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and 10 K. Felix Pie goes 0-2 but with three more walks (8 BB and 3 K in 37 PA), now 2nd in PCL in walks, and 16 runs scored leads all AAA. 1B Micah Hoffpauir hits Grand Slam, leads all of AAA in RBI with 17.

this whole felix pie performance is really interesting...he is forcing the issue by his success. keep it up felix......

here is the pitching line on ol' 3/44... 2.0 IP; 7 H, 6 R, 2BB, 2K, 2 HR; ERA 7.36 taken out after 2 batters in the 3rd. looks like Pierre and 3/44 is going to be alot of money not well spent; Brady Clark (0-3) played CF tonight but JP did come in later (to play defense?) I know, it's early...

Micah HoffPOWER, kid would be much better than Fat Daryl I do believe. Tyler Colvin looking good too, so with Pie we at least have three bats to watch in the minors, that's three more than recent years... AZ Phil, what's wrong with The Don? Disappointing so far this year.

Prior going to see Andrews for a second opinion, I’m guessing the first one suggested surgery. What say you Cubster? ------- It will be interesting to see what Dr. Yokum said. Having Kram Roirp travel to Alabama to see Dr. Andrews again sounds like he just had to use up his frequent flyer miles before they expired and the restrictions only allowed a flight to Birmingham, AL. No mention of an MRI yet. They might have to fly MP back to Chicago so ARam can perform a special super duper Arthrogram on him. I'm sure someone out there wants to scope him if he gets enough opinions. After all he's got good insurance...and he's not useful to anyone in baseball at this point. I'd love to see a believable diagnosis though.

Reliever Scott Eyre was wheeled out of the Cub clubhouse on a stretcher and taken to the hospital via ambulance for intravenous fluids after Saturday's game. He was weak after complaining of flu-like symptoms ...cue the theme song to M*A*S*H http://tinyurl.com/3xfbda

10man, this is an open discussion. We are allowed to "get on [Z's] back." He has pitched poorly this month. I said it was early so obviously I was saying that he can turn it around. But like it or not talk about his head problems is fair game.

from Toni G in the sunday Sun Times...on the little Blue MASH unit: Third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who missed his second consecutive game with tendinitis in his right wrist, said he hopes to return soon. ''It's good news there's nothing worse wrong,'' Ramirez said. ''I'm pretty sure it won't be too long.'' Ramirez is taking anti-inflammatory medication for the condition. Scott Eyre was stricken with a case of stomach flu and was taken by ambulance to a hospital for fluids. He's expeto be fine, but his availability for today is uncertain. fortunately MP isn't on her radar screen these days http://tinyurl.com/2pcxcp

CWTP's vaunted former Cub now - Florida Marlin pitchers? You know, the ones that Jim Hendry ruined our pitching inventory over, iho? Well Nolasco is on the 15 day DL with elbow problems and a 20.25 era http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070409&content_id… How about Sergio Mitre? 0-2, 4.09 ERA certainly 5th starter material - we have plenty of those. Pinto? 0-1 5BB and 6K in 4 innings of work w/a 4.50 ERA Its a long season, however. Nolasco still has plenty of time to win the Cy Young.

one more little MASH blurb on MP...from beloved Bruce Miles in the Daily Herald: Ohhh, doctor: After undergoing a series of tests from orthopedic specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum on his injured shoulder, pitcher Mark Prior’s next stop will be a visit with Dr. James Andrews, who will analyze the test results I cringe at the way the media reports stuff. Looks like he did have an MRI, but that's reading between the lines again when BM says "a series of tests". I just wish someone would report things more precisely. They don't need Dr. Andrews to analyze it though. That gives me the illusion of Dr. Andrews in his office with MRI films spread over a couch asking whether they got along with their mother. A second opinion is what it's called. You know the old line about the patient who after hearing from his doctor that he was diagnosed with being obese and needed to lose weight says to the doc: "can I get a second opinion?" ...and the doc says: "OK, and you're ugly too"

cubster:
A second opinion is what it’s called.
Remember that time Z had some sort of tightness and the Cub's medical staff was like, oh it's ok, and Z was, like, screw you guys I want a second opinion from another doctor. That was amusing. Was that '05 or '06, I don't remember.
http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/cubs.asp
With Ramirez out of the lineup, they almost need the extra thump from Floyd. When Ramirez returns they should put Murt back in.

"When Ramirez returns they should put Murt back in." I'm getting the feeling that until Cliff gets hurt again, this is now a straight platoon situation in LF. Anyone else?

We were seeing 91 on the stadium “gun”. #35 I probably should have said 90 or 91. I went back and looked at a couple of innings to see if I made up that 89 number. In the first inning, Hill threw about 5 91's, one 92, and one 93. In the second, he wasn't throwing as hard. It was a long half inning. Of 21 fastballs, 2 were 91, 10 were 90, and 9 were 89. That's as far as I got in my audit. In the "Hill's gem" highlight reel on mlb.com, Hill had two swinging strike threes on fastballs. The first was 90 and the second (on Encarnacion, I think) was 88. Anyway, I don't there's a righthanded pitcher who throws 90-91 and strikes out a lot of people, but I could be wrong.

Latroy blows another one… At least he has another career to fall back on. Isn't that him playing President Wayne Palmer on 24?

"I’m sure someone out there wants to scope him if he gets enough opinions. After all he’s got good insurance…and he’s not useful to anyone in baseball at this point." Cubster, I was listening to Dave Kaplan on WGN radio on Thursday night after MP left his start and he mentioned via his source that MP had visited a few doctors over the summer and he was actually in favor of surgery. I think this visit to Andrews is probably to schedule surgery or at the very least to do a scope and see what damage the MRI could have potentially missed.

lol VA Phil. Anyways, let's hope Lohse has a bad day today. Last matchup he pounded the outside corner and the Cubbies couldn't get a whole lot going against him.

Anyway, I don’t there’s a righthanded pitcher who throws 90-91 and strikes out a lot of people, but I could be wrong.
Anyone remember this game? I do... Maddux was amazing! I just kept wondering how he was striking them out with a 87 MPH fastball. That was the last Maddux game that really stuck out to me.

VA PHIL: "Anyway, I don’t there’s a righthanded pitcher who throws 90-91 and strikes out a lot of people, but I could be wrong." Well - look as I said, we were in attendance and believe me when following up a 91 mph fastball w/a 74 mph 12-6 curve, the prolific Reds offense was limited to 3 hits. I think you can draw a conclusion there. Although, to be fair, a couple FOs by both teams would have been HRs on a normal day.

Eric the Great — April 15, 2007 @ 3:03 am Micah HoffPOWER, kid would be much better than Fat Daryl I do believe. Tyler Colvin looking good too, so with Pie we at least have three bats to watch in the minors, that’s three more than recent years… AZ Phil, what’s wrong with The Don? Disappointing so far this year. ================================ ERIC: I think it's fairly likely that Micah Hoff-POWER! will get strong consideration for Daryle Ward's roster spot in 2008, if not earler. And unlike Ward, Hoffpauir is actually in good shape and runs well for a big guy, and he also can play LF. I see Hoffpauir as a Mark Sweeney/Ross Gload-type 1B-LF-LHPH. Hoffpauir probably would have been brought up to Chicago last September, but he suffered a season-ending oblique injury in August. Tyler Colvin certainly appears to be a top MLB prospect, or at least I think so. Soriano-Colvin-Pie or Soriano-Pie-Colvin LF-CF-RF could well be the eventual Cubs outfield configuration, possibly as early as 2009. As for Donald Veal, I've seen him pitch off-and-on over the past couple of years, and whenever I've seen him throw, he seems to struggle with command of his breaking ball and finding a consistent release point for his fastball. So I have never really seen him when he's been at his best, although even when I've seen him struggle, he is also usually virtually unhittable. I guess that's why I don't see Veal as a future MLB starting pitcher, because when I've seen him pitch, he just throws too many pitches per inning, and as such he would wear out a bullpen if he were to remain a starter. So I would project Veal more as a future MLB closer or primary 8th inning set-up guy (so that he would throw just one inning per outing, and if he throws 18-20 pitches, then he throws 18-20 pitches, and it's no big deal), with maybe a Veal/Cherry or Cherry/Veal end-game by 2009. I would project Angel Guzman, Jeff Samardzija, and Sean Gallagher as the top three future starting pitcher candidates, with Sean Marshall, Mark Holliman, and Billy Muldowney the next group of three. Like Donald Veal, Jose Ceda (now at Peoria) will remain a starter in the minors to get him more innings, but if he can be more efficient with his pitches and consistently throw strikes, he could be a future Cubs starter, too. If not, Ceda would be still another possible future Cubs closer candidate. BTW, Carlos Marmol's performance last night (5.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 10 K) reminded me a bit of Rich Hill last year, where Hill had to convince the doubters that he could be an MLB starting pitcher even after dominating game-after-game at AAA. If Marmol keeps throwing the ball like he did last night, he could join Guzman, Samardzija, and Gallagher (and possibly Ceda), plus also maybe Marshall, Holliman, and Muldowney, as future Cubs starting pitcher candidates (or trading chips). Otherwise, Marmol should be a solid relief pitcher, perhaps joining Veal, Cherry, and Wuertz, plus possibly Rapada, Mateo, Pignatiello, and/or Baez (and possibly Ceda, if he doesn't remain a starter) in what could eventually be something close to a 100% home-grown Cubs bullpen.

In today's times LouPa said he would use a "speedier" lineup in cold conditions. Derosa looks like he will have plenty of time to heal that back with Theriot playing like he has.

the very complimentary Lou on Rich Hill
''I thought a lot of him in the spring,'' Piniella said. ''He's serious about his business and goes after you and changes speeds and throws strikes. What I was impressed with today was they tried to steal on him and did [in the second and fourth], so we went to the slide step, and he executed it perfectly. That's a complete pitcher.''

Cubster: "looks like Pierre and 3/44 is going to be alot of money not well spent;" i am sure they are not too worried as that 7-4 record is 2nd best in all of MLB...

Rob G.: "Latroy blows another one…" Another pitcher Dusty ruined...:)

kid's a pretty good blog writer, too. passionate without sounding like a crybaby...funny.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.
