Cubs Trivia

What player stole the most bases with the Cubs in the 1990s?
As always, try to answer without a web search.

Sosa?

Dunston?

anyone care to guess the top 5? make it easy for you, two of them have already been mentioned, #5 is probably a bit of a surprise.

glanville? ...only batting prospect drafted by the cubs worth a damn in the 90s...sadly...

im kinda amazed how forgettable the guy is...i just talked to a couple friends and asked them if they remembered how good he was as a Cub and drew a few blanks...even the friend that remembered him doesnt remember him being that much of a contributor.

close but not quite Wes R. Lance didn't really steal much for the Cubbies it turns out, only 28 in 2+ seasons...

I'm tempted to guess Jose Hernandez just based on the fact that he was with the club for most of the 90s so even ~10 per year would have added up. Other than him, McRae is the only real burner I can think of but he was only around for what, a season and a half?

and there it is... btw, our pal Dave Pinto at Baseball Musings has a bunch of wonderful free tools to get you these answers http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/008676.php I used the compare players over a given time period for the top 5, just sorted by SB's and Cubs and entered the dates for the 90's. Usually put like 03/25 for the beginning of the season and 10/10 for the end if you're not sure when the seasons started or ended, it won't give you an error.

Heh, my memory was definitely off on Hernandez. I thought he used to be a 8-10 SB per year guy, but he only managed 20 in nearly six full seasons with the club.

for example, any guesses on most 3b's in the 2000's by a Cub? The top 2 are pretty obvious but #3 and one of the guys tied for #4 are probably a surprise.

third base in the 2000's....let's see, aramis, bellhorn, kevin greene? for the life of me, i cannot think of anyone else who played third with any regularity the past 7 years.....jose hernandez? neifi? i'm just throwing names out there now.

I think Rob's talking about triples, aren't you? Obviously Korey's in there, and probably Pierre, though he only played for a season.

yeah most triples in the 2000's... yeah Korey #1, Pierre #2, good luck on 3 and 4 though. Sosa is tied for #4 though....

How about a more fun and Cub-fan-like list? Which top 5 players with more than 500 PAs in the 90s posted the worst OBP and worst OPS for the Cubs? Which pitchers with more than 100 IP had the worst ERA+ and highest WHIP? And of course, which manager had the worst W/L pct.

Just checked. I'm definitely surprised by the other #4 on the list.

Aramis ?

I don't see an OPS category to sort by but they do have OBP. If we use 1000 plate appearances as the cutoff, top 5 worst Cubbies in the 90's?.... (Drumroll) Luis Salazar .278 Shawon Dunston .301 Rey Sanchez .304 Jose Vizcaino .309 Jose Hernandez .313

"Tito got it first in all fairness…" But Tito's answer was not there when I typed in my answer and clicked POST. So while he was first, I got my answer independently from his. Like Edison and Elija Grey

it took you 6 minutes to post "I'm going with Sosa"? Do you type with your tongue?

i distinctly remember a summer night game at wrigley when matt stairs chugged out a diving triple...and then promptly looked up towards the stands and pointed as if to say "beer me" as he dusted himself off and tried to suck in some air. easily one of my favorite televised cubs moments

man Neifi doesn't even qualify for worst OBP in the 2000's at 1000 plate appearance. You have to drop it down to 900 plate appearances... 2000's (900 PA cutoff) Corey .293 Alex Gonzalez .297 Neifi .297 Girardi .315 Barrett .347

Todd Jones finally remembers that he's Todd Jones, blows a 2-run lead in the 9th to the Royals, first earned runs of the year.

Can you imagine Zumaya setting up and Rodney closing? Yikes. Take a lead out of the 7th inning and you pretty much have the game locked up. You have to like Jones, though. I remember he said once his strategy is to get guys out before they realize he's bad. lol I'm paraphrasing, but it was something like that.

yeah barrett is third, todd walker tied for 4th with sosa for most Cubs triples in the 2000's...

Fantasy baseball is a bitch...I have bonderman is my other league, and the Tigers cannot get him an effing win!!!! Anyone want Jake Westbrook?

I think, more than anything, that list is a testimony to an incredible lack of that type of threat in the Cubs' lineup. That Juan Pierre could be 2nd on that list after one season... Walker and Sosa had 8 triples apiece, and they're tied for 4th??? Yikes.

well for triples you need speed and an ability to go to right field. So fast lefties have an advantage, otherwise fast righties who go the opposite way. I expect Theriot to be near the top of that list by the end of the decade with the way he hits and runs. Soriano will never hit a lot just because he so rarely goes the other way.

Team ERA Starters? Anyone happen to know the Cub's ERA for the starters currently?

WES: Thanks - wonder where we stand among NL teams currently. If we could only hit consistently.

"We’re 10th in the NL, 15th overall in starter ERA" Thanks... Well, no "great shakes", but I am thinking it is probably better than last year - although, "Maddog" had a great start in '06.

Yeah, E-man. What's surprising is that Z is one of the "problems" at this point in the rotation.

From Rotoworld, the Phils are turning their best pitcher, Brett Myers, into a setup man. Unbelievable.

Yep, Rob G with the right answer. Aramis gas GIDP'd 60 times. 2nd was Sosa with 54.

those are 5 choices of suck by Nate Silver and why does Murton play RF and Soriano LF? Murton for Blanton wouldn't be horrible, wouldn't mind Aybar either except the Angels aren't about to bench any of their OF's. JJ for Lieber was more interesting before the year started, now I'd rather just see Angel get the gig.

"Jones to the Angels for Erick Aybar." sounds good to me...dont think angels are that stupid, though. he's cedeno with more power, speed, arm, and ball handling skills...SS/3rd...could probably cover 2nd...at worst a great bench option.

Jack Jones for Blanton would be a hell of a deal. If I were Hendry I would even pick up the salary difference.

JJ for Blanton is a no-brainer, Silver was proposing Murton for Blanton though...

Ok my genius friends (no, really I mean that). ARe we already buried too deep? Not really. Some things... 1) Is carlos lost because of his contract issue? Taking it the field? Soriano talked a bit about pressing because of wanting to impress the home fans, could Z being do something mental? Or is it just the old A-Ram April start? 2) Should be excited that for the first time in a while that the Cubs actually can mount comebacks now (Last ¥ear being down 4-1 meant game over) or that they fall short? 3) Should Hank WHite go back to being the basic "personal" catcher for Z? Pinella seems to really not like Blanco. But, he has the great commuication with Z. 4) Will the trib eventually cough up the money? My guess is maybe not. Zell has not been approved yet and it could be a while. Once he is, he may not want to make another big commitment due to various business models. Even worse, if the Sun TImes is to be believed, the Cubs might not be sold until mid-08 which would mean no money next off season and bye bye carlos). 4) Are Eyre, Howry really over used from Satan Baker? 5) Ok, stupid, but Cubs fans are all about curses...I read that John McDonough ordered only home whites and grey road jerseys. Something about a deal to put names on home jersey. Personally, I didn't much like the Sunday or third jerseys, but it was pitchers choice. Look around Johnny boy, they sold! Yet, they aren't available anymore to players...Z almost always wore them. Perhaps they might help...these guys, just a little thing... 6) Ronnie Cedeno should not have a place any where on this team. That just me. NO stats to back that up. 7) More seriously, anyone else notice that Prior goes to see Andrews and Jobe (was it jobe?) in LA and Birmingham) and we hear nothing about his condition? PRivacy or not, the Cubs give updates usually (truth or not). We hear Wood's condition right away. Could it be more genetic looseness? Or just Prior's head screwed on looseness? Very intriguring. Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!

That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.

Of course, McKinstry runs circles around $25 million man Javier Baez on that Tigers team. Guess who gets more playing time?

    But I digress…

Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

    booooooooooo

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.
