Unfair Comparisons

Now that our new wonder-kid centerfielder is up with the big club, and since he's spent his entire minor league career being unfairly compared to our last wonder-kid centerfielder, I thought it would be appropriate to continue the unjust association. So let's see how the major league debuts of Corey and Pie match up. Corey made his debut on September 18th, 2000 against the Milwaukee Brewers. He would have likely been called up a few weeks earlier when rosters expanded on September 1st but the AA Jaxx were in the midst of the Southern League playoffs at the time. He did not start the game versus the Brewers, but did enter as a pinch-hitter for Sammy Sosa in the fourth inning. I assume it was an injury. Corey promptly flied out to center...let's just go ahead and guess it was on one of the first two or three pitches. It was a rather unceremonious debut as he ended up striking out in his next two at-bats and recording one lone putout in the field. Pie made his debut just two short days ago against the San Diego Padres of course, leading off and playing centerfield. He grounded out to second and flied to left in his first two at-bats, then got his first major league hit, extra-base hit and RBI in his third at-bat with a double in the fifth. He also made the defensive play of the game when he made a perfect throw to nail Russ Branyan at the plate in the tenth after a Marcus Giles single. The Cubs though blew the game in the 14th thanks to Will Ohman and some shoddy outfield defense. Game number two for Corey was his first start and it also came against the Brewers. He started in centerfield and batted third, Sosa must have been sitting with whatever injury took him out the day before. Patterson promptly committed an error in the first inning on a ball hit by Geoff Jenkins which ended up costing starter Ruben Quevedo two unearned runs. Patterson then popped out, struck out and flied out in his first three at-bats. Down 7-6 in the seventh though, he got his first hit, extra-base hit, run scored, RBI and home run with a game-tying blast. Woohoo!! But it was all for nought, the Cubs took an 8-7 lead going into the ninth, but Kyle Farnsworth and a Shane Andrews error conspired to blow the game for the Cubs. (Sidenote: This was Will Ohman's first debut game with the Cubs.) Game number two for Felix was last night versus the Braves. Leading off and playing centerfield once again, he began the game working a 3-0 count but eventually struck out. He tripled in his next at-bat and scored on a Mark Derosa grounder. He worked a walk in the seventh and came around to score on a Derrek Lee double. He ended up 1-4 on the day with two runs scored and a walk. Nothing worth noting on the defensive end and the Cubs lost 8-6 thanks to Scott Eyre and some shoddy infield defense. So to sum up their first two days: Corey: 1 for 8, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, 1 (costly) error Felix: 2 for 10, 1 3B, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, 1 awesome defensive play Cubs record in those 4 games: 0-4 I guess some things never change....

Here's an unfair comparrison: Pies is 100% nothing like Patterson. He's a young Sammy Sosa. Oh yeah, I said it. And I expect him to be as good too! (OK, not that good, but that's the type of player I expect him to be.) Why? Cause Pie is a big boy and will get much bigger with weight training. That is a guy who bats 3rd and hit 45 homers. Not 5'9" Corey Pattershrimp.

One other, major difference. Pie has baseball instincts. The comparison is really between apples and oranges. Corey is a gifted athlete, but is to baseball what Clyde Drexler is to dancing. Pie almost oozes with baseball instinct. Plus, he seems happy.

old and blue. i completely agree with you. pie seems to love playing, and is a joy to watch.

Which young Sammy Sosa? A young version of Sosa's mid-career or Sammy at the same age as Pie is right now? Frankly, Pie looks a lot better than Sammy at any age, reminding much more of Barry Bonds in his Pirate days.

If we can't get to Mark Redman tonight, we're in trouble. I have never been a fan of Mark Redman. I just don't think he's that good. Perhaps it's that he's spent the past three years north of a 4.70. That combined with a whip over 1.50 five times is about all the convincing I think I need. He added a cutter for '07, which is good news for us, because it's terrible.

Instead of Sosa, wouldn't a more likely comparison for Pie be Soriano? Similar body build, similar tools, similar approach at the plate. Makes sense to me.

Man ARod is having an April for the ages... .351, 10 HR, 25 RBI and it is only April 19th!!!!! WOW!!!!!!

I think Pie looks a lot more like Grady Sizemore. That might be what the cubs are thinking since they have Pie training to be a lead off hitter.

I believe Pie will be a lefty version of soriano who can play the outfield well. The resemblance is almost scary.... The kid will be nothing like Corey. I dont have all the stats to prove it, just a hunch... I was never a big fan of Corey's swing, while Pie looks to have a lot more discipline with his stroke...

RJ, if Pie has a career that mirrors Bond's (even before the inflated steroid days) I will ecstatic. That is a hall of fame career we are talking about. I agree with Matt, Pie bodywise and the way he moves, is VERY similar to Soriano. May we be so lucky. I will dub him Barry Sosoriano!

So I was curious this afternoon. I have nothing better to do with my life today since the weather isn't great. I decided to find out why we aren't winning. Here's our statistical rank in all of baseball in most major offensive and pitching categories: HITTING: AVG: .261 (8th) SLUG: .387 (15th) OBP: .320 (17th) BB: 41 (24th) K: 96 (17th fewest) RUNS: 64 (14th) 2B: 29 (9th) 3B: 3 (T7) HR: 9 (21st) AVG / RISP: .304 (3rd) PITCHING ERA: 3.97 (19th) HR: 12 (T10th most) BB: 56 (8th most) K: 112 (4th most) WHIP: 1.26 (10th) BAA: .221 (5th) SLUGA: .360 (8th) OBPA: .310 (9th) Conclusions: Our hitters don't walk enough. We don't hit enough home runs..yet. We're kinda playing small ball with a lineup meant to hit a boatload of XBH. Our pitchers walk too many guys and give up too many home runs. Our pitching is very good in nearly every other category. Because of walks and the dingers that are certain to follow, our ERA is inflated.

On the heels of his 0 BB/10 K outing in his last start and doing what Rich Hill did this time last year, Carlos Marmol has another dominating performance at Iowa today, going 7 IP (94 pitches), 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, and 8 K. Rocky Cherry gets the last four outs (four up/four down - K, GO, FO, K) for the save. And another RBI for Micah Hoffpauir (23 RBI in 15 games), OPS now up to 1.154. And another multi-hit game for Koyie Hill (now hitting .455) Carlos Marmol for the season: 3 GS 2-0 1.65 ERA 16.1 IP 11 H 3 R (3 ER) 4 BB 24 K 0 HR .183 OBA There should be some spirited competition at Iowa between Angel Guzman and Carlos Marmol for Wade Miller's #5 slot in Chicago.

"He added a cutter for ‘07, which is good news for us, because it’s terrible." Hilarious.

I think Pie looks like a cross between Ted Williams,Tony Gwynn, and Ty Cobb. Basically he is the Chuck Norris of Baseball Prospects.

isn't mark redman exactly the type of pitcher who shuts down cub lineups? (fortunately, some cubs have seen him before).

Send down Scott Eyre and Will Omen to the minors and bring up Cherry and Marmol.

oh yeah, please bring up Marmol, man was he a joy to watch last year. I'm sure he's turned it all around in the course of 3 AAA starts. And I imagine everyone on the send Ohman down kick, was also on the send Wuertz down kick at the beginning of last year. Meh....

Pujols is hitting .190 coming to Wrigley this weekend -- cue the ominous music.....

"isn’t mark redman exactly the type of pitcher who shuts down cub lineups? " To answer your question, yes Redman sucks

Redman's starts against the Cubs are only good when they bring in Josh Beckett to pitch from the 3rd inning on...

Easy there Rob...Marmol did have 5 or 6 solid starts last year....and some horrific ones as well... Lol....now, if Marmol puts together 3 or 4 more starts like that, maybe that could be discussed. He is off to a good start: 2-0, 16.1 IP, 11 H, 3ER, 1.65 ERA, 24K/4BB...that is the most telling stat to me...now if he could consistently get into the 7th inning, that's be even better. That said, let's not anoint him anything just yet. Ohman will be okay, I hope..we still have 1 too many lefties in the bullpen, unles they are going to use Ohman as a LOOGY.....or something...

Hate to rain on your parade there Wes, but I was countering Rob's sarcasm with more sarcasm

Since people are comparing Pie to Patterson and Sosa I figured I would post this. A comparison of Sosa and Patterson's first 5 years I wrote back in 05

I don't know wgnstatic, it doesn't mention it in the retrosheet pbp. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
