Game 36 Thread / Cubs @ Mets (1 of 4)

Game Chat Jason Marquis vs. Tom Glavine Lineups:
Theriot 2B Reyes SS
Izturis SS Chavez LF
Soriano LF Beltran CF
Ramirez 3B Delgado 1B
Murton RF Wright 3B
DeRosa 1B Green RF
Blanco C Lo Duca C
Pagan CF Easley 2B
Marquis P Glavine P
What's wrong with Cliff Floyd? I know he's a lefty and all but a more than respectable 394/444/636 line versus Glavine for his career although it's probably been awhile since he's seen him. Not to mention we've used all our middle infielders to start a game once again. UPDATE: Derrek Lee was sent back to Chicago to have his neck checked out last night. He may be back by tomorrow's game but definitely won't be there to do any pinch-hitting tonight. Thanks to reader Chris for the initial scoop.

I'm interested to see what Soriano does in the #3 spot.

I'm more interested to see what Lou Piniella does when he starts switching people.

Izzy batting 2nd... I guess he's been hitting better recently. I still think I would have him hitting further down.

I thought Ward was the backup 1B. this our "L" lineup.

ROB G: Just noticed that Izzy and Theriot are playing the same position. Is this so Theriot can help him?

Izturis is 7/17 against Glavine and has the hot bat.

Your other choices for the 2 spot are Derosa (1 for 8 vs Glavine) or Pagan. I guess Murton as well but then you start running into problems in the middle of the order.

Ward 3/8 against Glavine for his career.

No idea what Lou is doing with this lineup tonight.

This line-up looks like shit to me, which of cours means we'll put up a 10 spot.

since I don't like the lineup choices, I vote for us to all bitch about it for the next hour. That usually leads to a huge game from our offense.

DeRosa has four career games at 1B and only 9 putouts, so I'm guessing that really means "an inning or two in at first base in four different games."

anybody monitoring pregame LouPa show, maybe Santo has the same questions for him?

Yeah, Stone is talking about how Glavine is actually easier to face from the left side of the plate. He is saying that this would be a very good night to play Ward at first...

Glavine's straight change doesn't tail away from hitters on the left side...

that use to be very true about Glavine being harder on righties than lefties but I think he really worked on a slider last year. His 2006 splits showed a distinct advantage against lefties but he seems to be back to having trouble against them this year.

I dunno...

Santo is yet to say any thing about it. He went on about the line up being a puzzle and all the pieces need to....yadda, yadda.

Maybe this is an error? Oversight? Bloody DeRosa @ 1B??

Didn't Hendry pay for a guy specifically a situation such as tonight?

Maybe Ward got lost at a NY restaurant knocking back pizzas?

"specifically FOR a situation such as this..."

I guess Daryl Ward can't hit lefties too well. Cause I sure as hell don't like DeRosa as our back-up 1B.

Interesting for sure.

I think you'd go with Floyd at 1b before Ward as I mentioned.

I guess because DeRosa didn't start yesterday and he wanted to keep Theriot and Izturis in there.

WELL - Todd Walker or DeRosa @1B?

I guess Floyd hasn't played 1b since '97. I thought he played a bit in New York, guess not.

todd walker at 1st was more of a move of despiration given what else was there and how "well" todd played 2nd.

we got murt and his lack of arm in RF while a better arm in in LF and at 1st. the guy at 1st can also play RF a lot better, too...sadly.
Look at the headline story... What was that old horror movie with those people that had no eyeballs? That's a creepy picture... Sorry for the deviation. I opened another window, and it just popped up there...

you get your news from CNN? you really hate america that much, huh? you know they're a liberal news organization bent on killing us?

actually, im suprised their head story isnt "madonna gets headache while looking at adoption catalogue" or "britney spears gets new haircut"

ps- lou dobbs has something to say about mexicans, news at 6.

CNN...mistaken for liberal by those who have no clue what a liberal issue is. go corporate welfare, go.

"that use to be very true about Glavine being harder on righties than lefties but I think he really worked on a slider last year. His 2006 splits showed a distinct advantage against lefties but he seems to be back to having trouble against them this year.

I dunno… "

Pinella just said on the Santo show that he knows lefties fair well versus Glavine and that he's got a bunch of righties in there, but that it's essentially his best available defensive line up.

No, I don't get my news from CNN. My company has one of those scripts that sets your browser's default web address to CNN. I have no choice...

wow crunch, way to stay on topic.

"you know they’re a liberal news organization bent on killing us?"

It's "Event Horizon" isn't it? Creepy!

"wow crunch, way to stay on topic.

Floodgates…open. "

woah...just a joke...not jumping down anyone's throat there...not directed at anyone.

just my usual CNN = Entertainment Tonite rant.

sorry. :)

Yeah, crunch. I thought that was hilarious... Vent all you want...

Uncle Lou discussed the lineup:

"Izturis is swingin' the bat well in the 2-hole"

"Ya know Derek is out and will be day-to-day. Nothing serious. He's in Chicago now. Alfonso is takin' more pitches."

Said nothing about DeRosa at 1B. Discussed the all-righty lineup - other than Pagan in CF.

Izzy starting and in the #2 hole...WOO!!!!!

JACE: Its a BASEBALL site - not BCB.

fair enough and it's not that big a deal crunch, but the faintest whisper of politics tends to open the discussion on matters that I don't come here to read about.

Sweet, I get Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling on Keith has the "Fuck it, I'm Keith Hernandez" face going already.

I thought Soriano was most comfortable in the leadoff spot, why is he being moved down now?

no play for mr. grey.

im going with the horror of ESPN's feed...i'll refrain from throwing in a political "lesser of 2 evils" joke. heh..

Put Izturis on the bench, where he should be!!!!

start the "dusty said" broadcast stopwatch.

"I thought Soriano was most comfortable in the leadoff spot, why is he being moved down now?"

Yeah - we talked abt. this on a previous thread. Go figure!

It seems like Fonzie will do just about anything Lou wants. Which is how it should be. For $136MM, he should wash the towels if asked - or hire the laundry service to do it!

MANNY: LOL! Yep. Is he gonna go 0-4?? Or, keep the hot-streak goin'?

Two pitches, two outs.

Nice plate discipline.

As manny would say, WOO!

This is so 2006 Cubs. A lineup nobody likes, but they score a ton of runs. Go baseball!!

Izzy is in the two-hole? Maybe that's why it's been so painful to watch...
If you want media propaganda go on over to FoxNews. That's right I said it! Bring it on!

do you mean 2007 cubs manny? the cubs scored no runs in 2006.

Wow a shot at Fox News, how fresh. Let me guess, for your next jab you are going to tell me the Rush Limbaugh is a fat, drug addict, shill for the Karl Roves or the world.

lotta walks by marquis...

Marquis doesn't seem to have his best stuff tonight. I hope we can get 6-7 innings outta him.

what are the cubs batting as a team with the bases loaded? anyone know?

I hate to raise this, but Marquis's BABIP must be pretty low. 33 hits on 52.2 IP with only 25 K. Has anyone done the calculation?

"what are the cubs batting as a team with the bases loaded? anyone know?"

ESPN sortable stats does:

.222/.353/.333 through 27 ABs

No the next shot is at O'Reilly. Limbaugh is old news.
Sorry, pointing out the truth never gets matter how often conservatives want to point out how 'old' it gets.

And, dude...lighten up. Just a joke in response to the CNN jab.

Chad: I had a snide response for you, but it didn't post. I know you're really disappointed that you missed out.

To paraphrase my post: "Lighten up".

So take that!

"Rush Limbaugh is a fat, drug addict, shill for the Karl Rove..."

YES! And a Fat-No-Talent Drug Addict! And a tub-o-lard blow-hard. And, a hypocritical-fat-RICH-druggie who is on Rove's payroll.

Other than that he is o.k.

All an opponent has to do is get to our bullpen.

And The safe gets opened.

I love Erin Andrews.

Please kill the Mets. The Braves need you to!!!

If the Mets score, the Cubs lose.

If the game goes into extras, the Cubs lose.

I'm not seeing any other scenario.

it's official, the bullpen is this team's weakness - by a wide margin.

who's got the most suck - Eyre, Ohman, Howry or Wuertz?

Wow. Why on earth did they intentionally walk Beltran and put all that pressure on Wuertz? If it wasn't four balls, a wild pitch or passed ball would have ended it.

the walkoff walk. Nice at-bat by Delgado.

Bases loaded walk to lose..............I can not believe it...........It is tough to be a old Cub fan sometimes.

Only the last ball to Beltran was intentional.

Was the last ball close?

Lou Pinella your my hero. Genius! Pure baseball genius. And before you all say "Lou didn't make Weurtz walk Delgado" he did make him walk Beltran. FU LOU!

ACCORDING TO JACE or whoever else stated this earlier:

"The bullpen is 'NOT THAT BAD'" OH REALLY???!!!!!!!

And you are watching the same games I am?

Last ball to Delgado was pretty high I think.

ball 4 was eye level. not even close...

i really wonder what the record will be after the end of the Sox series.

THIS was Lou's WORST game as Cub manager!

From sitting Ward in place of Defucking Rosa, to not letting MArquis pitch ONE more inning KNOWING our BULLPEN fucking SUCKS, to NOT INSISTING SORIANO Sits and HEALS HIS GODDAMN Hammy, to the USE of the bullpen. UGH!!

One of the many reasons why this will be no better than a .500 team. ONCE AGAIN Snaring defeat from the Jaws of Victory!

Technically, but it sure looked like Wuertz was pitching around Beltran.

To Wuertz' credit, he did throw a lot of strikes to Delgado and those first two called balls looked like they painted the corner.

The most important ball of the inning though was Blanco's. A good throw to second and the game is going to the top of the 10th.

Manny: "Not sure how we could expect the bullpen statistically to get much better..."

E-MAN: MANNY and 433: You guys are mentioning tthe evening out of the starting pitching coming back to earth with the bats needing to heat up - my opinion is if the BULLPEN can do their fucking job we would be tied or close to the Division lead right now.

I zero confidence in Eyre, Howry and Eyre right now. Dempster, who I LOATHED last year, I must give credit to. It shows he really has worked very hard to improve. It is too bad the other three guys are letting the great starters down.

JACE: "E-man, I disagree in general about the bullpen. I am not sure that you can, in general, expect much more from them....But the stats show that as a whole, the Cubs bullpen is not bad at all."

E-MAN: "The stats show as of yesterday: Record of 2-9, Save %=54% (3rd worst in the Majors), 46BB in 105 Innings, MLB rank - 16th (courtesy stats)"

Make that 2-10 now, JACE.

ROB G: "Last week THT noted the bullpen WPA as 18th in the MLB, 11th in the NL.

Doing a little below average at this point…"

TEN GODDAMN LOSSES FOR A BULLPEN already in the 2nd Week in MAY?

BTW - The Mets are SOLID. I am so jealous.

OH, allow me to add a hearty FU to Michael Wuertz. I don't care what you do, I don't care if Delgado hits one into the east river, you throw a strike. you rear back and throw it down the middle. YOu do no, under any circumstances, walk in the winning run. FU!

wuertz pitched himself into the IBB...3 balls in a row.

he threw like 8-9 in a row for balls, unintentional.

no one up in the pen through any of it...wuertz's to hang himself on and he did.

add me to the list of people kinda tired of the mega-early hook on pitchers who arent giving up ugly performances, though.

im still trying to figure out how lou is gonna use this pen, though...people's roles are constantly shifting and quick hooks vs. sink/swim roles im really confused on.

Oh know!!! We lost one game to the best team in the National League!!!!

It must be the end of the world!!!!

Yeah Chad, I'm sure Wuertz was purposely pitching around Delgado. Lou should have told him he needed to throw a strike and then he probably would have

I do really question removing Marquis - while he definitely didn't have his best stuff tonight, he still was able to pitch okay. Even in the 6th, he gave up two cheap hits - one blooper that should have been caught, and one roller that got through the infield. He wasn't exactly getting hit hard that inning.

Dave, you miss the point. YOu need to win games like this. When you play against better teams, you must hold on and take the ones you can. We let this one get away.

And Vince, these are major leaguers. They know that. What I am saying, is that you throw a fucking strike. Even if its a 91 mph meatball. There is still a chance that a well hit ball will find a glove. Unaccptable! This isn't little leauge.

The definition of insanity is saying the same thing and expecting different results.

And saying...
"its early" or we are "overreacting" etc is the same lame excuse, this team aunt going to the post season.

The only drama left is who gets dumped and who buys the cubs

that game felt like it was lost when they failed again with the bases loaded...

You know what else is unacceptable? the word 'unaccptable'

Let's see, who can it be--

- Failure to get a big hit in the late innings
- Bullpen meltdown

Don't tell me --let me guess...

The 2007 Cubs?

Save the anger, boys -- Wuertz's walk actually saved the bullpen.

It's not like the Cubs were going to score in extra innings -- how many extra innings has it been since they scored?

Can't win close games with a crappy bullpen.

So, the old guys blow a game, then the young guys blow one -- any middle-aged guys in the pen?

so what you are telling me, is that Michael Wuertz, a major league pitcher, knowing full well that he HAD to throw a strike, threw a ball not because he couldn't locate his pitch, but because he was FUCKING AROUND and not trying to throw a strike?

If thats the case, I give him a big fuck you too, but I have a feeling he was trying everything he could to lay one in there.

Even my spreadsheet said he should throw a strike in that situation.........

Vince, I don't have the radar gun on that one but i'll bet he had some mustard on it. But that is besides the point. I expect major league pitchers to throw strikes on demand on any given pitch. WHOA! Before you go nuts, understand that I'm talking about an 88 mph fastball down the middle if needs be. Any major leaguer 'should' be able to do that. Much the way you would expect an NFL kicker to make an extra point. They sometimes miss, but its pretty rare.

Pie 2-4 with an HR, but Holliman got knocked around for the first time.

Hopefully, Lou now realizes his pen isn't The Nasty Boys. The problem with using 4-5 relievers per game is that is likely that one of them won't have it that night. The match-up thing ain't workin' Lou -- time for Plan B -- if a guy is throwing well, leave him in. Forget righty-lefty -- it has failed all year.

i love the intimation by some that it's lou's fault that most of the pen SUCKS. i'm so sick of this cowardly shit where guys can only do one of two things - miss the zone and walk hitters or throw get me over cheese that gets cranked ~ a la ohman and howry on saturday.

i guess at the end of the day we must remind ourselves that there's a reason pitchers become relievers...

Whoa eli: Lou had a bad game. Coaches and managers do just like players. You are getting into the Dusty free pass realm here which is not accurate.

LOU makes the lineup - he will tell you that. He is responsible to put the team in the best position to win - managers can't really make a team win, but they can cause a team to lose.

LOU made several ill-advised decisions tonight, the lineup, not allowing Marquis too pitch one more inning (he would give us the best chance to win - NOT the bullpen), not sitting Soriano to give him a day of rest (his play in the 6th was certainly a big contributing factor in the floodgates opening), the post-Ohman moves, playing zero Rosa instead of Ward, etc.

Sorry, but IMO, he layed the turd tonight. IF he could count on the bullpen, things would be different perhaps.

from the AP wrap tonight:

The Cubs are 0-for-15 with six RBIs with the bases loaded dating to April 30.

"Oh know!!! We lost one game to the best team in the National League!!!!

It must be the end of the world!!!!"

No dave, everything is peachy, we got Lou and he is fiery, and that is all we need!!!

An Iowa Cubs official told me this morning that Mike Fontenot is on his way to New York, but has not yet been activated, pending re-evaluation of Lee's neck problem. Cross the fingers...

  • I'm guessing 3/30 and all the two foot long hot dogs you can eat didn't work

  • Yes! In a 12-way tie for first!

  • Shit.

Blew my prediction! I had them signing Zimmerman and trading for another arm.

  • Damn wanted Zimmermann

  • Yeah, this market. Remember when Ted Lilly signed a 4/$40m with the Cubs? It was like "Well, I guess if you can throw a ball, that's what the 3 and 4 starters are all getting." I'm glad I'm not a GM. Of course, they're spending our money...

  • in this market that seems like a decent deal relative to the market.

given that d.price will probably get 30m-ish a year, 22m for 29yo zimm doesn't seem bad. i wouldn't complain about him suiting up for the cubs. one less option gone...

  • Zimmermann 5/$110m with Tigers. Youch.

    And the updated predications page:

  • Cubs 3B Christian Villanueva (who is out of minor league options) is hitting 358/464/500 for Obregon in the Mexican Pacific League (LMP), and is leading the LMP in OBP, is second in BAvg and walks, is seventh in SLG, and is tied for 8th in HR. He also has struck out only 16 times in 175 PA.

  • CTSteve, thanks for spelling Zimmermann correctly. We don't need another first baseman.

  • The media has linked Cueto and the Cubs approximately zero times this winter. I'm thinking there's just not a lot of interest there on the Cubs' part. It seems unlikely.

If the Cubs miss on Price, Grienke, and Zimmerman, they will aim for a mid-rotation starter via free agency or trade. However, I think this scenario also significantly boosts the odds that they extend Arrieta.

  • The Tigers are going after Zimmermann and the Red Sox will be throwing money at Price. Bringing Cueto back to the NL with the Cubs is looking like a serious possibility. Thoughts?

  • Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe in the financial impact to the Red Sox for not signing Jon Lester early in the free agent process:

It will be interesting to ultimately add up the cost of letting Jon Lester go.

The Red Sox botched up their negotiations with Lester in during spring training of 2014, making an initial offer of $70 million that was roughly $40 million short of what it should have been. Talks broke down and Lester was traded in July.

  •'re flip-flopping again?!

Is this legal? What is the rule here on opining definitively and then changing your mind?

I am not only surprised at your declaration, but Cutler's better 2015 showing. I don't get it - he went through Martz, Turner, Trestman, Kromer, and now Gase...and he is still here! And. he'll be here mext year too.

  • Happ signs w Jays

Morsi saying Price won't be a Jay

  • needs more d.beeler and e.jokisch

  • As an Illinois tax payer I appreciate what they r doing
