looks like it's pouring at Shea at the moment, unfortunately the audio went out on my mlb.tv to get an update.

Rain delay theater, also for the Phils-Bruski's, same storm

looks like it will let up in an hour or two

http://tinyurl.com/s2rjw

you have got to think they will wait this out. I don't think they will want to have a double header tomorrow on travel day.

Nothing to update from the radio end either. Pat said they'd probably wait several hours before cancelling the game because there is expected to be a large crowd and because they wouldn't want a doubleheader on get away day.

hang in there

Yeah, what the hell? Hang-hang-hang in there...

Why isn't Fontenot starting?

Who?

I've never heard of this Fontenot character. He new?

Fontenot is not going to start.

Sosa yard, 597, 45th park he's hit a homer.

3 away. Just stay healthy, Sammy.

Does that count as a major league park for that "record"? It was at Disney World right?

well it happened in a major league game, so yeah.

He already had the record. That just makes it one more.

¡Viva La Sosa!

9:00 Eastern at the earliest.

Rule V draftee Jason Smith was claimed by the Diamondbacks if anyone cares.

Sosa is one of the really feel-good stories for the HGH industry this season.

Considering the whole Orlando/WWS complex idea is turing out to be a very forgettable failure for the DRays, is really quite comical that Sammy has now locked the experiment into the record books.

It's amazing, distance does make the heart grow fonder. I never liked him as a Cub, but I've actually starting pulling for him this year.

Go Sammy. Baseball been vely vely good to you; you been vely vely good to baseball.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAAH!!!

Jerome Williams went back to the DL with a shoulder problem right after coming off it for an ankle injury. His replacement in the rotation:

Micah Bowie!!!

Did Sammy homer in the Tokyo Dome when they played there? Just trying to think of anything similar to this one that wasn't in a normal MLB park.

doubtful, it was in April and he didn't hit homers in April. :)

philly game started and cole hamels promptly struck out the first 3 batters.

I've found myself pulling for him, too. It's strange.

Cole Hamels has a big face. That just doesn't seem fair for competitive balance.

and no he didn't, Grace and Andrews homered in the first game off Mets relievers. None in the 2nd game for any Cubbies.

I have not found myself pulling for him. It's not strange. You can't call Bonds' assault on Aaron's record a fraud and then root for Sosa.

And I notice I forgot the r in Tarzan. That was strange.

Yes I can.

No, you can't.

Yes I can

Bonds is a jdouchebag. and a jerk.
Sammy is only a douchebag.

Plus, Sammy's vely vely big muscles are not proof enough of guilt. He's also not chasing a 'sacred' *cough, bullshit, cough* record like Bonds is.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6819664

Troy Percival considering a comeback...

97mph?! Huh.

People aren't pulling for Bonds? Really?

Nope. If he breaks what's-his-name's record then, well...I won't really care that much, I guess. But he's still a jerk. I hear he hates puppies. And gypsies. And Scandinavians, strangely enough.

how's the weather?

"Go Sammy. Baseball been vely vely good to you; you been vely vely good to baseball."

Are you mocking Sammy's English? Do you know how hard it is to learn a second language when your mother tongue is a Romance language?

...just kidding.

I can't believe some people on here are pulling for Sammy, but they aren't pulling for Bonds. I hate both of them, but I'm just saying that's a little bit of homer-ism if you ask me. They are both selfish jerks, who are/were juice-ified, and who aren't half of the hitters that Banks, Mays, and Aaron were.

Are they playing this game or not?

I'm pretty sure Sosa was on something, but there's still a difference between him and Bonds. Bonds actually tested positive, Sosa never did. Also, Bonds is a huge dickface who cheats on his taxes, leaves his friend/trainer to rot in prison, and cheats on his wife.

word from Mets radio was the tarp was off and it stopped raining, no time announced as far as I know.

Hamels with a no-no, 5.1 IP, 8 K's

Bonds never tested positive....he said he mistakenly took the clear. Sosa, he might have never tested positive either, but he happened to remarkably suck at the time testing became passed by the Union, and magically came back...he must have been spending that time learning english. Sosa is just as dirty as Bonds is...they are peas in a pod.

6 innings, 8 K's, 0 hits for Hamels

Oh, did I mention it was a perfect game as well?

we have a potential 9:15pm CST start.....

Do you want it to get broken, Rob?

Sammy did take something that made him forget how to speak English one afternoon in Washington D.C. Mark McGwire took a similar drug that day that made it impossible for him to dwell on the past - only to look to the future.

Pat and Ron are acting like they are going to start this thing very soon.

Brewers are not just looking awful at the plate, they made 2 errors back to back in the bottom of the 6th....they somehow made it out of the inning without giving up a run even though the Phils loaded the bases.

Matthew Broderick told a funny story on Letterman one night about Sammy meeting him at Shea Stadium and offering him the opportunity to come party with him and a group of rather loose looking women seated nearby.

I guess because Sammy's such a great guy we can assume the group was made up of his wife and her girlfriends. Broderick said it was the most bizarre first meeting of a famous person he'd ever had.

we have baseball

perfect game over, bb to weeks

What's wrong with homerism? Barry's a douchebag and I won't cheer for him. Juicing is only a part of that. Sammy was a flawed individual too but he was one of us, so I'm pulling for him.

How can you call it homerism? In my original comment, I said that I never liked him when he was a Cub, but I find myself rooting for him in spite of myself. That's not homerism, that's anti-homerism...bizarro homerism, if you will.

Yes, Carlos, I'm making fun of Sammy's pronunciation...but mainly I was just making fun of his whole "baseball/I have been very good for me/baseball" schtick. I know you were responding in jest, but I wouldn't want to come off as insensitive, regardless. I wasn't intending to disparage Latin American's, though...just Sammy personally (that's how I remember HIM saying it). Moreover, I DO know how hard it is to speak any langauge as a second language (I work part-time in a Thai restuarant - long story), which is why I generally stick to the study of dead languages...no one knows if you speak it poorly.

What was I talking about? Oh, yeah Sammy. He's silly. His Sammy-ness somehow just doesn't annoy me as much now that he's not on MY team. God love him...it's hard for everyone else to.

Too bad. No no-no for Big Face. Good pitching nonetheless.

Homerism? Barry Bonds is a fucking asshole and everyone hates him. Sosa loves the fans and is a great guy. Oh, and he never admitted to taking steriods like Bonds did. And yes Bonds ADMITTED to taking them. Sosa's name has nevere been linked in any investigation. Not Balco, not Canseco and not Grimsley nothing nada zip.

Word. That too.

doh.

i like the rich hill who doesn't walk everyone better than this guy.

and yet another 2 out complete loss of composure for a cubs pitcher

I find humorous (sickeningly so) that Izturis has the lone hit thus far.

I guess Cub hitters figured they'd take the rest of the series off after scoring 10 last night.

Another mediocre pitcher looking like a Cy Young candidate.

We're being 1 hit through 7. This is awesome.

what a terrible performance by this team thus far, you can tell they dont care if they win or lose

is Derrek Lee now a fragile player?

with neck spasms?

its a cubs medical staff/hendry/US govt. coverup.

he's got boneitis.

Chad...Sosa loves the fans? Sosa loves fan appreciation weekend until the second inning Sunday. Please! Sosa loves Sosa and attention being paid to Sosa

is it really important what the ailment is as long as it's keeping the player off the field?

i hope that's not the case, but it might be worth the asking...

Sosa's a great guy? What are you, twelve? You don't know anything about Sammy Sosa. If the Matthew Broderick story I mentioned above is any indication, he's no doubt just another selfish asshole.

you can tell they dont care if they win or lose

You have to be kidding me. Do you really believe this?

  • Not sure I agree with this logic. The Cubs are one of the best teams in baseball, they have spent heavily on the team over the past couple of seasons, have more hitting prospects than they have places for them to play (and more on the way), a clear weakness in the bullpen, and have a 1.5 year window with Arrieta (to say nothing of the likely declines of Lester and Lackey).

Unless you think (maybe even if you do think) Schwarber is the next coming of Babe Ruth, I would certainly consider trading him if it brought back a couple of the best relief pitchers in baseball.

  • Miggy was going to sit anyway with Lester starting.

In related news, do any of the Cubs pitchers want to throw to Contreras?

Rob G. 2 hours 6 min ago view
  • Only Russell and Miggy failed to reach base yesterday. Both sit today.

billybucks 2 hours 15 min ago view
  • Trading Schwarber actually makes a lot of sense because his actual position is currently being taken by Anthony Rizzo, unless they vote in the DH this offseason.

Trading him for a reliever is never going to happen though. I don't think you can trade Schwarber unless you get a CF'er for a few years (presume Fowler finds his multi-year deal next offseson) or a couple of high end young starters...or an established starter...a good one like Chris Sale.

  • I don't see what the Yanks have that the Cubs need.

  • peter gammons on MLB network pushing the yanks/schwarber angle...says insiders from the yanks say brian cashman highly covets him.

unless that conversation starts with a.miller (2/18m left on contract) i dunno how you even start that conversation given the "not trash, but no stars" state of the yanks minor league system.

they got corner OF'r aaron judge, C gary sanchez, RHP james kaprielian's questionable elbow, RHP domingo acevedo...all interesting, none expected to impact the game like schwarber's power potential.

  • damn. low sample size blah blah whatever, but that slash got sneaky good. 10 hits, 4 walks, 2hr, 1 double through 39 PA...nice

  • Buddy Ryan takes his place alongside George Allen as the great Bear head coaches who never were.

  • Well, at least he can still hit: Jake slashing .294/.368/.868. Forget hitting 8th -- he should hit 6th.

billybucks 6 hours 45 min ago view
  • Curious to see today's lineup vs. a LHP: Ross needs to catch Lester, Joe likes Javy at 3B when Lester pitches. Heyward with back-to-back good games at the plate, and is actually hitting a little better against LHP (.247/.341) than RHP (.232/.321), although neither is much to write home about. But, tomorrow is an early day game, so some regulars will probably sit either today or tomorrow.

Maybe Willson in LF, KB in RF and Almora in CF? If so, Albert Jr., assume every ball is yours.

That reminds me that Lucas Giolito will start for the Nats tonight.

  • Reds pitching meeting tomorrow:

"Hey coach...maybe we should walk Bryant?"
"No...keep challenging him with fastballs! What kind of man are you?! The Cubs walked Harper, and look what happened there! They got teased for it, by one of the Nat players! Is that what you want?"

billybucks 17 hours 53 min ago view
  • How can I get that feature? I think it woudl be a win-win for all involved.

billybucks 17 hours 57 min ago view
  • Ian Happ is hitting.733 after 5 games at Tennessee. He went into tonight's game hitting .667 -- and went 3-for-3 to raise his average.

2-for-3, including a bomb, for LaStella at Iowa. Pierce Johnson very bad -- 2IP, 5ER. Pitching prospects not looking so hot -- Underwood has been awful.

Did Jiminez get hurt? I noticed he came out early yesterday.
