Jason Giambi=idiot

That "stuff" may not have help, but brother don't take away their HGH!

Hey, at least he admitted he took it. Better then most people in baseball.

from previous post-

Also heard on Chicago radio-
Marshall will be here next week
Lee can ph today, probably play tomorrow.

Lou today-

“there will be major changes to the alignment come Monday or Tuesday”

My questions-
“alignment”, huh?
Is Guzman going on Dl or to the bullpen?
Is Eyre going on the DL with Wade Miller’s back spasms (wink, wink)?

naturally Giambi didn't say anything about HGH though....but yeah steroids don't help at all. It's not like players are risking a suspension, character assassination, and future health risks for this stuff that according to many users doesn't help you anyway.

Apparently, Mitch Williams has been located in Woodstock N.Y. where he has been operating a Head shop for several years.

Hendry has given him a "low-risk" deal to start rehabbing at AAA Iowa. He and Wade Miller will be sharing a place together.

Cubs hammered Buehrle last year (and sent him into a tailspin) by being patient and taking his off-speed stuff to RF. Let's see if they remember.

Giambi didn't admit anything until his Grand Jury testimony was leaked (our fine legal system at work). I don;t get why Bonds is a monster and Giambi isn't.

Giambi came back, dropped alot of weight, was hitting about .200, then got big again and hit about 10 HRs in a week.

Just drinking lots of milk, I guess.

I'd like to get excited about Cubs/Sox, but I'm really just marking time until the Royals/Rockies game tonight.

Lilly career vs. Sox: 4-2, 6.64 ERA, 47 hits in 39 IP.

Buerhle career vs. Cubs: 3-3, 5.63 ERA, 53 hits in 46 IP.

Based partly on above, my pick:

Sox 23, Cubs 19, with another late-inning Cub bullpen blowup to blame.

Bonds is a monster and vilified for more than steriods. He's a total ass and no one likes him and they never have. Not to mention, that Giambi cheated his way to an MVP trophy. No one cares. Bonds cheated his way to the most important record in all of sports. Big difference.

Giambi isn't a monster because he is not an asshole. People hate Bonds not because he "cheated", but because he is simply a raging asshole.

My whole point on Giambi is ...shut the hell up.

He apologized 4 years ago for doing "something" and now he's opening his fat head mouth again.

Don't make a stand when you are swimming in HGH.

Someone get Farnsy a beer!!

Farnsworth not a fan of Clemens' clauses-

In other news, wow is that a weak Sox starting lineup.

And I know I shouldn't say that, due to the Karmic Consequences likely to follow.

Sorta like the Mets lineup yesterday?

someone mentioned in the other thread about Marshall coming next week, here's Lou's quote in his daily briefing:

“We’re going to make some changes, believe me,” Piniella said this morning. “We’re going to make some changes. You see Marmol coming in here today. That’s part of it. We’re going to make some changes, and you all will know in due time. That’s all I got to say.”

Quick, where's the mob that chased him out of town?

Crede is out for today's game...took a grounder in the gob during warmups...Ozuna in.

In the "Who the hell do you think you are?!" portion of the news comes this little nugget:

Apparently, Kyle Farnsworth is the ultimate team guy and he thinks its NOT OK for The Rocket to not travel with the team on road trips.

Kyle Farnsworth and Jason Giambi have to be the early front-runners for next week's 'Just Shut Up' award on Mike&Mike.

I'm thinking Lou's 'some changes' might involve an OF being moved, Eyre to the DL or DFA, and Marshall taking on a swing role.

After spending most of the past two months on limited action rehab at Fitch Park, Juan Mateo threw a two-inning "live" BP session (30 pitches) at Fitch Park this morning.

The "live" BP session is usually a pre-cursor to getting into EXST game action, so I would expect to see Mateo get into an EXST game sometime next week, and then continue his rehab at Peoria, Daytona, and Tennessee, before eventually settling into the Iowa starting rotation sometime in June.

The thing about Mateo is that he developed his shoulder problem during Spring Training before the Cubs had a chance to option him out. So therefore he had to be placed on the Cubs (MLB) DL.

And as an "auto-renewal" (pre-arbitration) player, Mateo is operating on a split contract that pays him somewhere around $380-400K if he is on an MLB roster (including the DL), but only about $60-70K if he is optioned to the minors.

So as long as his shoulder is "sore," he stays on the Cubs MLB DL and gets paid at the MLB rate and accumulates MLB service time toward salary arbitration and (eventually) free-agency.

But once he gets optioned to AAA, he gets paid at the minor league rate and no longer accumulates MLB service time. So there really isn't a whole lot of motivation for Mateo to get healthy just so he can get optioned to AAA.

It will be interesting to see how his rehab progresses.

I’m thinking Lou’s ’some changes’ might involve...

Hopefully a trade we all know is way overdue.

Highest BA in Sox lineup - Erstad .259

Cubs probably lose 3-1.

just because TheFarns stayed out drinking until 4 AM and rolled into the clubhouse glassy eyed the next morning before a 1:20 game doesn't mean he's unable to comment on being a bad teammate....err

uribe and hall move up in their lineup, terrero bats 8th in LF

without Fontenot, who are we gonna call on when we need a 5 run HR?

dave, to further what bogey said, this is from the same guy who fell asleep in the bullpen. If Mike Mussina and Derek Jeter and ARod and Jorge Posada and Johnny Damn and the rest of the people who have either won a world series or are going to the hall of fame, don't care, then Farnsworth shouldn't care either.

"Hopefully a trade we all know is way overdue'

and furthermore, even if Farnsworth is 100% right (which he isn't), he's just not the guy who should be calling out Roger Clemens for anything. When you win 300 games in the bigs and strike out 5000 batters, you get special privileges.

Here's a guess:

Marshall the new #5
Guzman, Marmol and Wuertz vie for closer
Ohman and Dempster still around
Eyre and Howry gone
Hopefully, Cherry invited back
No trades (some of our players are tradeable but their contracts aren't)

Maddux sure as hell isn't asking for any special privileges.

Clemens also hasn't struck out 5000 batters.

oh really, Marmol vies for closer? ugh...

he might get there one day but wow and wuertz just a blew a game monday walking 3 straight guys. I love the guy, but what exactly makes that better than dempster?

I doubt dempster gets moved out of anything yet, although guzman in that role sure is tempting I must admit.

VA PHIL: Since Piniella says what's going to happen won't happen until next week, that leads me to believe it will be Sean Marshall recalled from Iowa and inserted into the rotation between Marquis and Zambrano (so Marshall's first start would be next Friday), and Guzman moved to the bullpen starting Tuesday (after his arm has recovered from yesterday's 75-pitch outing).

As to who will be dropped to make room for Marshall, I would guess Scott Eyre will be DFA'd, although if he just gets released, the Cubs will be on the hook for about $6.5M (what's left of Eyre's salary 2007-08).

Ideally Hendry will want to trade Eyre someplace where the Cubs pick up some of his remaining salary over the two year period, but not all of it (like maybe all of his remaining 2007 salary, and half of his '08 salary).

One thing about Eyre is that he has a limited "no trade" through 2008 that allows him to block a deal to ten clubs. He also has a "player option" to opt out after 2007, but he would be a fool to exercise that.

Interesting that Dempster didn't get a Blown Save for yesterday's debacle - it's a bit strange that he gets the loss because he put the winning (losing) run on, but Eyre gets the blown save because he allowed the run to score. But, them's the rules.

Lou's comments: Got to believe Eyre is gone, as he has been consistently bad. Demp, Wuertz and Howry have been up and down, Ohman is his usual wild card self and Cotts started great but has wobbled.

In this week's SI John Heyman says that MLB not happy with Colangelo due to debt for the D-backs, and that MLB "prefers Mark Cuban to buy the Cubs."

My fear-
One of Selig's cronies is in the running also, John Canning currently a limited partner with the Brewers.

I think Clemens getting the extra privileges is bullshit, but the Yanks agreed to it, so they also need to deal with the other 24 guys having a legit problem with it. My biggest problem is Joe Torre, Mr. Overrated, has said the Yankees don't give special privileges (i.e. Randy Johnson had to shave, Giambi had to cut his hair, etc.). But now that they are reeling, it is OK. They are hypocrites...

Another run we didn't score in a close game because of Quade.

I don't see Eyre getting DFA'd. Look how long it took Hendry to do so to Rusch and it only took his illness to due that. I am sure they will just do the same thing they did with Miller, come up with a fake injury, and then try and get him to come back and look a little better and then dump him at the trading deadline for some rookie ball/A player.

And for the record, those saying nobody had a problem with Howry or Eyre's signing, please go back and look at the archives (if they are up yet). There were more than a few people who though they were signed for too much and too long.

Of course, we all know Dusty ruined them both, so don't dare blame Teflon Jim...:)

AZ Phil,

I am going to go ahead and say that you're predictions there are all wrong.

Guzman's done well in the rotation, no need to boot him. The Cubs were paranoid about putting curveball left handers back to back, if they have 3 of them in the rotation they'd have to have them pitch back to back, and they never eat contracts - see Izturis.

Of course, I could be all wrong as well.

Va Phi -

Quade is defienitley in a slump, or just bad.

When he sends runners, they get nailed.

When he holds runners, it looks like they would have scored easily.

Somebody earlier predicted Sox 3-1 -- that's looking pretty good right now.

marmol starts all spring, makes one 15 pitch relief appearance and gets called up to presumably throw out of the bullpen - guzman: reliever/starter/reliever[?] what the hell did cherry do to get in the doghouse? what are the discussions that take place before these moves/decisions are made? are they/we already @ the point of "what the hell, let's try so-and-so, let's try this. let's try that [rhetorical question]

Sweet Angel.

Rob, the Cubs have to at least try to fix what's broken. If Dempster goes to the mound in a ninth inning this weekend he'll get the Alfonseca treatment that he deserves. Things are going to get hot for him around here. You can't be a closer under these conditions, at least at home.

Since no one else will give us a closer, we have to find one on the roster or on the farm. Wuertz is a weenie like Dempster--afraid to throw a fastball over the plate--but he's a little younger and he might snap out of it. At any rate, someone else besides Dempster deserves the chance to fail.

Marmol and Guzman at least are not afraid to throw a strike. Neither is Cherry, who would be my choice but obviously is not Piniella's.

i wish we had kept Pagan after spring training...he brings more energy to this team, like Theriot. I'd say he's here to stay now.

So is Pagan, now the savior??? Angel Pagan?? Oh brother...

Agreed. For all the talk about the off-season money the Cubs threw around, it's guys like Pagan and Theriot who give this club hope.

which marmol did you watch last year?

and cherry was the victim of DeRosa and Lee's injuries not being DL-worthy and the Cubs needing a position player for a few games more than anything. He can't be called up unless a player goes on the DL or 10 days. He was hardly great but it's a bit soon to start eating contracts although Scott Eyre is close.

Cotts, Wuertz and Ohman certainly weren't going to get sent down.

Howry is in.

In the immortal words of Harry----"hold everything."

1-2-3 inning. Wow. Practically unheard of.

What are the chances we see Dumpster?

Agree with Rob G about not eating Eyre's contract this early. Also, I think it's premature to throw Dempster under the bus at this point. Who knows, he may be doing the sparkle in April, suck the remainder of the year refrain again ... getting a save today would sure help the situation.

Assuming Howry get's taken out for a pinch hitter, that get's Lou off the hook on whether to send Howry or Dempster out to close the game out ...

If Mike Fontenot is the Cub equivalent of Chuck Norris, is Angel Pagan the equivalent of Mr T?

I'm guessing Eyre will go on DL ala Miller

I'm guessing Sox fans like McDougal as much at this point as we liked Dempster last night

omg pagan loves it.

Angel Pagan:

I'm a nacho center fielder.

Sometimes I play great from the left side, sometime from the right.

1-2-3 inning, 2 Ks for Demp. I approve.

I was pretty surprised Lou let him touch the baseball today.

Were those insurance runs I just witnessed?

Interesting strategy.

Turned on the White Sox postgame show on WSCR. Chris Singleton feels a factor in the Cubs' win was the White Sox lack of familiarity with the way the balls bounce at Wrigley.

But he said he's not using that as an excuse.

Maybe that's the Cubs problem. At Wrigley all rules of physics are supsended when they play at home.

i wish we had kept Pagan after spring training…he brings more energy to this team, like Theriot. I’d say he’s here to stay now

Pagan is up with the Cubs now because he's a switch hitter who can play CF. But he wasn't ready at the beginning of the season because he hurt his side making a throw in ST and could only bat from the right side.

And Howry and Dempster do what they've done pretty much all season, outside of about 2 bat outings for each.

The late inning runs was sure new though.

I agree with that Eyre to the DL bit Jacos. I stated it yesterday that Wade Miller's "back spasms" are contageous, but only to Scott Eyre. With his excessive contract and fairly good track record. It seems like it may be a little early to DFA him. If he spends so DL/rehab time and still sucks. Then its time to cut the cord. Just my opinion ( and Ive been called an idiot before).

Well, if Greg don't do it then Roger shouldn't do it. Weak argument. If Maddux asked for the same thing, I'd stand behind him, too.

"vorare — May 18, 2007 @ 12:39 pm

Clemens also hasn’t struck out 5000 batters."

You're right! Until he does, that fucker needs to get his ass on a plane!

on a serious tip...lou is very out of breath just at his press and flush...not a new thing.

he's gonna end up in the hospital if he doesnt start taking care of himself. the year off baseball he took looks like it took more of a toll on his body than the years he played.

especially after the hendry scare this spring...i mean, c'mon lou...

Well, if Greg don’t do it then Roger shouldn’t do it. Weak argument. If Maddux asked for the same thing, I’d stand behind him, too.

I didn't quite say that. I just think it shows that Maddux is a team player while Clemens is not.

so i wonder what teams are on
scott eyres no trade list to bad
tampa bay is probally on there
how about minnesota i think his
brother plays for them.

nope, Willie Eyre is with the Rangers.

well i am sure texas could use 4 or five pitchers

but thanx IFC i knew he had played for twins
did not know with rangers.

willie eyre starting for rangers on saturday

  • Phil, have you heard anything about the condition of Oscar De La Cruz's elbow? Has there been talk of a time table? Is he throwing?

  • i was distracted for most of the game and also missed the first few innings.

but yeah, any time he makes a good fielding+throwing play on D it's worthy of praise and a trip to pizza hut for a personal pan pizza and $1 worth of songs on the juke box.

    seriously, i'll take it.

  • No I have been thinking actually that he seems to lead the Cubs with balls called strikes all year. He really shouldn't be expanding his zone to swing at many of those either because it wouldn't lead to anything good. He's seeing the ball well though so hopefully it'll even out.
