Game 80 Thread / Brewers @ Cubs (3 of 3)

Game Chat Dave Bush vs. Jason Marquis Lineups:
Hart RF Soriano LF
Hardy SS Theriot SS
Braun 3B Lee 1B
Fielder 1B Ramirez 3B
Hall CF DeRosa RF
Estrada C Fontenot 2B
Jenkins LF Pagan CF
Weeks 2B Hill C
Bush P Marquis P
Rocky Cherry lasted a day, as he was sent to the 15-day with a right lat strain. Billy Petrick didn't even have to bother finding an apartment in Iowa and is back with the big league club. A win today would be nice, not only do we take another series from the Brewers, but sets up the Cubs to possibly be a game over .500 after half the season.

Odd that Floyd is not in the line-up. I know he has that AB clause, but I thought they give him a rest aganist bad teams.

my guess is Lou wanted someone who's not an experiment at SS with Marquis on the mound and still keep Derosa and Fontenot's hot bats in....

my guess is Lou wanted someone who’s not an experiment at SS with Marquis on the mound and still keep Derosa and Fontenot’s hot bats in…. Since when is DeRosa at SS an experiment?

Wow, the biggest game of this season so far, rest firmly on the shoulders of... Jason Marquis. I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit. Maybe he can sack up a bit and show what kind of gamer he is. Rich Hill and Sean Marshall showed what kind of gamers they were the last two days.

hmmm, Derosa hasn't played more than 20 games at SS since 2003 and his career high is 48 in 2001. sounds like an experiment to me... One I'd love to see play out, but let's not assume he's all that at short quite yet.

You want the guy who covers the most ground with a [pitcher making an attempt to be a] sinkerballer on the mound. DeRosa might (key word.. we don't really know that) be the better choice at short from a catch and throw standpoint, but I think he's a bit heftier than he was when he regularly played short a couple years back. No numbers to tell me that. Just looking at him this year from like '04 and '05. DeRosa is better than Fontenot at short, because we know Fontenot isn't very good over there. But, I think Theriot gives you a bit more range. That would be the reason I would make that decision, anyway. This is the way to do that and keep DeRosa's 455/520/682 (last 7 days) and Fontenot's 538/571/885 (also last 7 days) in there.

And guys like DeRosa take fungoes at all those positions everyday during BP. Lou sees that and we don't, sadly. There's no way he would have switched him over there yesterday if he hadn't seen him field some balls in BP. I imagine something he's seen there in the past week or two tells him he doesn't want DeRosa out there with a guy who's supposed to give you ground balls.

I have a question--how were the Cubs able to recall Petrick after only one day in the minors? Isn't there some rule that says you have to be down for at least 10 days before being able to be recalled? Someone mentioned on the last thread that Gallagher could've been recalled today because his 10 days were up (but wasn't because he just pitched).

ESPN reporting that Mike Hargrove is about to resign as M's manager for reasons unknown. Wasn't Dusty's name linked to that job in the off-season, i.e., when Hargrove got canned they were going to turn to Dusty. As well as the Mariners have played this year, you'd think they might prefer to promote from within. And remember always... "My name is Dusty. It's not Messiah."

You can call up a minor league before the ten days are up if a player goes on the DL.

3 up, 3 down, 3 ground balls in the first. I've seen all I need to see today. We're a lock. Great to take two out of three from the Brewers. Time to focus on the Nationals.

Cubs take another series from the Brewers.... hopefully we can go at least 5-2 on this trip going into the break....

If i told you that after 80 games we'd be .500 an still alive in the playoff chase, would any of you have been that upset? Not me.

Oh and LouPa still sucks. Why pull Marquis? for the 8, 9, 1 hitters? with a thin pen and no off day til next monday? FU LOU! (maybe Marquis asked out, but I doubt that)

One more thing. Great job Marquis!!! Today he showed that he has tons of sack and if mr. whip is right, it will be gettng rubbed down soon. Jason Marquis gets a Chad's Muy Macho award! (he already has one for his complete game shutout earlier this year) Way to go my Hebrew brother! Mazel Tov!!!

I love how Chad knows more about the Cubs' pitchers than LouPa does. Maybe you could help Hill and Marshall out too.

any doubt that marmol is a future closer? any doubt that that future is actually pretty close, as in, could be a few weeks?

Well, there is one thing I can say for fact. The last two days our starters combined for 5 innings. 13 relief innings. We don't have an off day until next monday. When you combine those things, the more innings your starter can give you, the less pressure you put on your bull pen. Those are facts. Not opinions.

i'm thrilled to be going to DC for the tues-weds-thurs games and bringing a large squad of cubs fans with me while they're at their hottest of the year. what is happening with Lee's suspension? I remember people saying the cubs would like to serve it during this upcoming trip but there's no day off to have any sort of appeal.....i haven't heard anything about this in a week now. will it be during the break and he'll be gone for that astros series? no reason not to go 5-2 on this trip, against two weaklings and with zambrano going twice.

marquis threw 77 pitches. for a guy who bitches about not having his arms so much he sure as hell dont have much confidence in his starting once the lineup comes around the 3rd time.

oh who asked for us to wake them when we won 8 of ten? cause RING - A - DING DING!!! Time to get up. "Bodie, this is your wakeup call, I am and F B I agent" -- Johnny Utah Point Break

The last two days our starters combined for 5 innings. 13 relief innings. We don’t have an off day until next monday. When you combine those things, the more innings your starter can give you, the less pressure you put on your bull pen. Sure... but that has little to do with Marquis. It has little to do with how Marquis was feeling. It has little to do with the fact that Marquis was appearing to get hit a lot harder in his last couple of innings.

"Bill Hall: Strike looking, Foul, Foul, Foul, Hall struck out swinging. Johnny Estrada: Strike looking, Strike swinging, Estrada struck out swinging. Geoff Jenkins: Ball, Jenkins flied out to left." That was Marquis' 7th and last inning. Man he was getting WORKED!

Well, while the Brewers are playing the same group that we are until the All-Star Break, the teams we trail in the Wild Card are not. We may not gain much on Milwaukee while we go to Washington and Pittsburgh, but coming home 4 or 5 over .500 will sure gain some real estate on the 4 teams ahead of us in that department. Need to beat the teams you're better than. We haven't done much of that yet this year. Now's the time.

And maybe it was something as simple as tying to build some more confidence for Marmol. While it wasn't a one run game, he got out of a spot of trouble in the eighth and then was lights out in the ninth. I'll take the day that Marmol can't throw tomorrow if it continues to build his confidence. Marquis did leave early, but I'm OK with the fact that Lou did that and may continue to do that when September comes and we can count on Marmol in a huge spot because he's continually put in tougher and tougher spots throughout the year.

you'd think ive been hearing about how the team constantly needs more arms while ive seen games where starters doing well dont break 80/90 pitches and more than a few are gone before 100 pitches come. marquis has a 4 run lead, 77 pitches, 2 innings left, and no off day tommorow....what would you do? not the first, or second, this has come up. i got no issue with how lou uses that #2 hitting slot...love it. i kinda question how erratic and short-leashed he is with defensive positions and pitching, though.

and you might think that's a good decision that Lou doesn't run a starter out there for 110 pitches every fifth day in June when September comes around. Or you might not. I guess I apparently have no idea what you think.

77

its just not an isolated incident. only reason its worth saying anything. you got a guy complaining about how he needs arms, the bullpen's been abused lately... *shrug*

to me, isolated of past incidents, the only way this could make sense would be: 1- marquis was spent...it happens 2- theyre stretching out marmol to start and this is step one #1 seems possible, #2 seems nuts... either way the current hottest right hander the cubs have went 2 innings in relief of a 77 pitch starter with a 4-run lead to protect.

While it wasn’t a one run game, he got out of a spot of trouble in the eighth and then was lights out in the ninth. He did? He came in the beginning of the 8th, and had a 1-2-3 inning. Then in the 9th, he gave up the leadoff double and then retired the next three. And I agree with Wes - I would rather have rested pitchers than tired pitchers in August/September. And when did pulling a starter early hurt the team?

You're both right. The bullpen has been abused the last two days. But tomorrow, he'll have Howry, Wuertz, Petrick, Ohman, Eyre, and maybe even Marmol (23 is right at the low end of the zone that you might stay away unless you needed him) all available if he needs them. Not like they got abused today.

I'm glad the starters aren't throwing Dusty-ish 110-120 pitches every time out. I want their arms intact for the stretch run. A lot of guys begin to get gassed by the time the playoffs roll around, and I'd love to see us make a run at a playoff spot. There was little harm in allowing Marquis his 7 innings and 77 pitches, he pitched very well today against one of the best offenses in the game today. Marmol threw 23 pitches; a very efficient two innings. Lou rested every other bullpen guy for the day, and saved excess wear on Marquis's arm while allowing a young gun to go out there and prove his stuff, building his confidence. Not a bad move. I can understand there is an argument the other way, but we may well be glad he did this come September. Foresight isn't a horrible quality in a manager.

even with a bad 8th inning for marquis the guy would have to fail REAL bad to even flirt with 100 pitches. if we're gonna talk about resting pitchers lets at least talk about a guy who's been worked hard. lou has very rarely let a pitcher go over 100 this year. hardly anyone's getting worked to death except the pen.

marquis went over 100 pitches last on june 4th...vs. miluakee. he's had a 100 pitch and 97 pitch outting... the problem with overuse that the man is complaining about isnt with the guys who are throwing the first part of the game. i think that's the bigger point.

my post got cut off. but my point is that if i were the manager, i would say to marquis, "go out for the 8th and if anyone gets to second base, you're done". This would make throwing over 100 pitches almost impossible. Then what happens if marmol gives up a run or 2 in the 8th? Yup Demptster has to come in. 3 pitchers when you could have used just one.

Some people are never happy. Before it was too many pitches and now it isn't enough. What is the magic number that every pitcher should throw everytime out? Lou has been doing this for over 20 years. I think I will trust his judgement over mine when it comes when to take a pitcher out. Just my opinion.

well, you cant lump me into any group that believes in "magic numbers". that said, the guy is bitching about needing pen arms... he rarely takes a pitcher over 100 pitches...today he did something he's done before with pulling a pitcher suspiciously early...marquis hasnt thrown over 100 pitches in nearly 30 days... it cant be that hard to believe that this would pop out as odd to some. if dusty was bitching about how he needed men on base in the #2 slot rather than talking about contact/speed...yet dusty kept putting a speed guy who cant walk there....wouldnt ya find it odd? lou's been bitching about his overworked pen for more than a week...its been months...and its not cuz starters keep falling apart in the 3rd-5th like last season with regularity.

THE WORD IS "DOUCHE", YOU DOUCHE-BAG! Now go dust off the gun rack in your truck.

Marmol//Dempster in the late innings should be kind of nice if they both continue to pitch the way they have, which one pitches the 8th or 9th doesn't really matter much.

just for the sake of discussion: Player A:302/513/599 9 2B 16HR 38RBI 82BB 32K Player B: 308/356/551 11 2B 3 3B 15HR 30RBI 21BB 66K Who ya got?

Not the point. Bonds belongs in the game for many reasons. I am calling bullshit based on that he made up over 100,000 votes in a matter of a couple of days. Unless they withheld the San Francisco vote until yesterday, there is no way this is possible.

"...last Monday...He trailed Soriano 1,332,581 to 1,213,423. In the final vote total, Bonds had 2,325,391 to Soriano's 2,202,513." according to MLB.com

well then Aramis will have to be part of the vote for the final player along with Soriano I hope...

The Washington Nationals' lone representative, Dmitri Young, joins Fielder, Pujols and Chicago's Derrek Lee, the players' choice, in the first basemen pool for NL skipper Tony La Russa.

Lee is the only Cub? Riiiiiiiight. Unfucking real. Aramis robbed.

there were only 1 million+ votes before last week and now 2 million+? The vote count doubled in one week?

the mlb.com article doesn't mention Soriano actually making it, just talks about getting edged out by Bonds.

Aaron Rowand? He was a LaRussa pick. They already had 2 phillies. and he takes Rowand over Ramirez. I understand him picking Puljos and Young as they needed representation but Rowand?

And riddle me this: How does a guy who gets booed everywhere he goes, how does he make the fan vote? I just don't get it.

Chris Young didn't make it? 8-3 with a 2.14 ERA doesn't get you where it use to... NL final vote guesses: Chris Young Aramis Ramirez Eric Byrnes Edgar Renteria Ryan Howard

oh fuck, that's horrible Oswalt, Zambrano, Chris Young, Gorzelanny and Webb

There is always a handful of pitchers that pull out for whatever reason, so hopefully both Young and Z can make it.

"If you mean game shape for the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest on Wednesday, then yes." Who are you picking this year?

Kobiashi is being a bitch and not in this year. He got beat in a preliminary and is afraid.

*Chad says: July 1st, 2007 at 11:55 am Wow, the biggest game of this season so far, rest firmly on the shoulders of… Jason Marquis. I think I threw up in my mouth a little bit. * I'd like to know just who it was, exactly, that introduced this ridiculous--now cliche--phrase into the English language. I think he/she and you, Chad, should be forced to drink a quart of vomit for blitheringly repeating such a gay phrase over and over. And next, people who say "threw [something/someone] under the bus" will be--literally--thrown under a f*cking bus.

Aramis' all-star hopes were really hurt by missing a dozen games in the first half. He'll never get the East Coast Bias Love that Wright gets, so Aramis needs the numbers. Oh well, all-star game is so worthless anymore, anyways. I think the only reason the players care is because most of them have a bonus clause written in their contracts, they get a nice little payday if selected. I believe D. Lee just got himself a $100K check. Good gig if you can get it....

Well No, I don't know where it came from but I can say that Christine Taylor said it in one of recent fav movies "Dodgeball" And if you don't like it too bad. Its here to say along with the term 'per', 'spot on' and describing everything as 'amazing'.

As for the "threw up in my mouth" quote, I know Bill Simmons at espn.com throws it around a lot...and Simmons is wildly popular, so he's probably made a big impact with it.

I've never even heard of BIll Simmons, but I think that pre-dates the Internet.

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.
