No Pie again.....bummer. He needs to play, especially in this this game where they have a shaky starting pitcher, and that gigantic outfield.

FYI I have 2 Field seats for the Police availble for the next few hours @ $200/piece, that's about $120 below face for the pair. email me @ defiantdesign(at)gmail(dot)com

Yep...Pie has been buried pretty much. If he isn't playing CF every day, then he is being wasted at this level. He needs to play every day, be it here, or at Iowa.

Yeah, I feel the same way, but have you seen this explanation from Lou? ‘Piniella also rested the struggling Felix Pie, but said Pie isn’t in danger of being sent down to Triple-A Iowa. “It’s a little more dangerous to play a young guy that’s struggling rather than sitting him down a while and letting him get the cobwebs out,” Piniella said. “A veteran player knows. He’s been through it before. He can handle it better.”‘

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me, either.... That comment about getting the cobwebs out... by sitting???

Angel's hitting (somewhat), Felix isn't. That's about all we need to know. Like Cesar, Felix's defense isn't making up for that right now. And we we're winning. Listen to Crash Davis.

No, Ichiro is the CF of the future! Mmmm, Ichiro. Ok, I'll let my Ichiro man crush rest for now:-)

hey, I know. I wish Pie was doing something with the bat, but he's just been a black hole of suck lately. And he's 22 or whatever. This isn't going to have long-term effects on him like people believe it will. He's still the team's leprechaun and all and Pagan will eventually hand him the job right back. And we know that Lou, Hendry and I guess Tribco are of a win it this year mentality. Consider it collateral damage of the offseason spending spree and recent winning. But I wouldn't be surprised if he gets sent down after the Break to make room for a 12th pitcher.

True...of course, he sucked and not played much the last 12 games or so.. It's hard to play your way out of any slump from the bench If they were going to pull him at every cold streak, he's have been better off staying at Iowa.

It's okay that Pie isn't playing. He played winter ball -- hell, he's probably been playing for more than two years straight without much rest. It's good to let him watch a little. He needs to shorten his swing, and most reports were that he was doing so in Iowa. I haven't seen it up here much. He's the anti-Corey. Teachable, baseball instincts up the wazoo. He'll be fine.

Lou sees him in the cage everyday. We don't. He's apparently not happy with Felix's swing. If that's so, he does need to send him down, though. If Pagan is hitting better, then Pagan needs to be in there.

The downward slice is still there in Felix's swing. Maybe Lou's hoping he'll get rid of that. I wish he'd let him do it in Iowa though. Gotta win tonight. Chance to move 5.5 back with the Pirates win over Milwaukee today.

One possible reason for keeping Pie up is to allow him to benefit from the major league level coaches. I don't know this for a fact but it has been done on other clubs, in other years. I remember the Twins keeping Rod Carew with the major league team in 1967, for the coaching, after he started slow. He turned out to be a pretty solid hitter

Pagan needs to stop mouthing off to the umps. Yeah, he's not getting ANYTHING close called a ball... but that's not making it better.

"The downward slice is still there in Felix’s swing. " Believe it or not, the downward slice is actually desirable.

Believe it or not, the downward slice is actually desirable. Why? All he does is chip everything he hits. It neutralizes his power and makes him a bloop hitter.

if you watch line drive hitters like say, Derek Jeter, you attack the ball downwardly and it jumps. Pie's problem is that he's not making good contact.

One month ago tomorrow (June 4, 2007), courtesy of ESPN.com's Gene Wojciechowski: "The Chicago Cubs are the worst team in baseball. This is an indisputable, irrefutable fact, as obvious as the ivy on the outfield walls or the steel trough urinals in the Wrigley Field men's bathrooms." http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_ge… Not that I was feeling good about the Cubbies a month ago either, but I wonder if he still feels that way. "Experts" are awesome.

He needs more crosswards fade on his swing. Perhaps some upwards spice. And some leftwards spring. More spring. Less flumpf. Hes a power hitter. He should be scrubbing his bats with lederhosen worn by French midgets. Thats ALWAYS the key. Ask Manny Ramirez.

freedom midgets you commie...its almost the 4th, have some f'n respect.

I think Wojciechowski's a Cubs fan though so he's forgiven for a little angst-fuelded hyperbole.

Is DLee hacking into MLB computers and artificially inflating his batting average? Every time I look up, he's popping up, whiffing or grounding out. Usually, with a man on base.

Nationals Announcers: Have to be happy to see Zambrano go. Whoever comes in from the pen can't have better stuff. Let me introduce you, Washington Nationals, to Carlos Marmol, 2007 version.

Pie's been slumping for a long time, they did try and let him play through it. Wojo's a self-hating Chicago fan, he wrote some piece about the Bears being pathetic and having no shot at the Super Bowl after the absolute meaningless Packer loss.

Ohman starts the 9th in a 2 run game and we still win! Woo-hoo! Can't wait to be at tomorrow's game... Here's hoping Hill has a better game than on Friday when I saw him in Chicago!

The MASN gun had Howry's strike three pitch to Kearns clocked at 99 mph. Two big strikeouts to end the game for Howry. Nice to see the bullpen hang on to a game the offense appeared to be trying to lose.

And the Brewers lost tonight. I wasn't sure that happened anymore.

Good win, although you wonder if more thanks is due to the Nationals than the Cubs. Zambrano at 10 wins at the halfway point. Doubt many of us would have guessed that the way he started this season.

Only got to see bits and pieces of Z, but he looked pretty good. Struggled with control, but the velocity was nice. When Marmol came in to face whoever it was in the 7th... absolutely devastating. Just flat overpowering. I really love this kid's stuff. If he does in fact have his head on straight, all the better.

"Pie’s been slumping for a long time, they did try and let him play through it." Well...sort of Rob. June 13th he was hitting.272. The next 9 games, he went 4 for 36. He sat 2 games..started 1 sat 1, started 1, sat 2, and then sat tonight. He hit a rough patch from June 13-June 23, and then the playing time yo-yo started. The Cubs are playing well, so I'm more than ok with this. When Pagan cools off at all, I'd like to see Pie back in there. Pagan's last 10 games: 5 for 24...1 HR, 5 RBI...He isn't exactly tearing the league apart. 1 for 4 tonight.

"One possible reason for keeping Pie up is to allow him to benefit from the major league level coaches..." I guess this makes sense from that perspective, but isn't Von Joshua the acknowledged hitting guru for the organization overall? If he's still at the AAA club, perhaps he could help refine Pie's swing if he's sent down shortly. "Believe it or not, the downward slice is actually desirable." I can't find his name, but there was a famous hitting coach (who also did some time with the White Sox back in the 70's, I believe) that emphasized a downward chop to the ball, in order for slap hitters with speed to get on base more frequently. It worked better on artificial turf fields, which were more prevalent during the 70's and 80's. I'm thinking of players like Vince Coleman and Alan Wiggins using this approach - does anyone remember who the coach was?

It's not a downward chop. If you watch great hitters hit, they attack the ball. The bat starts high (it has to) and drives downward towards the ball in an attcking motion. Like i said, watch derek jeter to it, he's a perfect example. Nomar too.

I couple of musings: 5 games left before the Break, 2 vs. the Bads, 3 vs. the Not Very Goods. 3/5 would be acceptable, 4/5 desirable, 5/5 possible. These are good times. Unless something very bad happens, we should be either 3, 5 or 7 games over .500 after Sunday. A question for the fantasy-heads out there: Is it possible that we have 3 of the top 30-35 closers in MLB on our team?

and i think dc is right. i think that's who he's thinking of. Star of Max Dugan Returns (ok small cameo)

"I think Wojciechowski’s a Cubs fan though so he’s forgiven for a little angst-fuelded hyperbole." Wojo is indeed a Cub fan and wrote a book about the 2003 team. He chronicled every game I think! It would be great to send him the quote. There is an email link @ espn.com...

Don't get greedy, 433. The plan for this roadtrip is 5/7, winning both series by 3/4 and 2/3. Anything more is pure gravy. If we're sitting at the ASB 3 games over 500, say 4.5 games behind Milwaukee, and 4 games out of the wild card, you gotta like our chances for the second half. Many seem to forget that the bullpen (literally) lost at LEAST a half-dozen games for the Cubs the first six weeks of the season. You get those games back, the Cubs would be 15 games over 500 and ahead of Milwaukee. In other words, the Cubs have been better in the first half than their record indicates. Bodes well for the second half.

The Dodgers and Braves have combined for 12 runs in 3 innings at Dodger Stadium in a night game. BTW anyone else have a bad feeling tommrrow with the combo of a Lefty who we havent faced before and a really early game.

Charlie Lau had a disciple -- Walt Hriniak (sp). I think he was with the White Sox. Ted Williams' book talked about a slight uppercut being the perfect swing, since the ball is travelling on a downward trajectory and a slight uppercut maximized the potential impact zone. A slice swing means you have to have great hand-eye and great timing, because the potential impact zone is so small. Charlie Lau had George Brett to make him a genius, like Leo Mazzone was a genius because of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz.

Cedeno with another HR tonight -- and Soto with 3 hits, now hitting .338. Also, Jake Fox went yard twice.

Donaldson in a box score for the first time tonight, catching for Boise. So he hits a home run, Boise up 6-1.

Pie was never ready to hit major league pitching to begin with. This isnt a big shock he is hitting .219.

....sure, because a .294 average in 1900 minor league at bats means that a player isn't ready for MLB pitching....283 at AAA last year.....389 this season. Huh?

Can't bring myself to vote for Z, he's been the worst pitcher on our starting staff this year.

I voted for Young without question. On our staff by itself Hill, Marquis and Lilly all deserve a vote over Zambrano.

The worst starter who is tied for the league lead in wins. fwiw. i know, i know...

no surprise there with the wins of course... Run Support for our Starters Z - 5.74 Marshall - 5.63 Marquis - 5.63 Lilly - 4.70 Hill - 3.49 Tale of the Tape between Hill and Z: Hill: 5-5, 1.10 WHIP, 3.49 ERA, 90 K, 31 BB, 16 HR, 98 IP Z: 10-6, 1.31 WHIP, 4.04 ERA, 102 K, 51 BB, 16 HR, 118 IP

The 5.74 runs the Cubs score per Zambrano outing could have possibly led to all those wins. Most among Cubs starters. Explain to me how Zambrano is responsible for the Cubs scoring those runs?

However, that is a pretty insane difference between Hill and Zambrano. Didn't we do the same thing to Clement, in not giving him any run support?

A shame Hill is only 5-5. The kid has really held his own so far this year. What I really find hard to believe is that Eyre (with his 7+ ERA) is only 0-1. Seems like he was in the middle of numerous bullpen failures earlier in the season, but just didn't wind up with the L.

The 5.74 runs the Cubs score per Zambrano outing could have possibly led to all those wins. Most among Cubs starters. Explain to me how Zambrano is responsible for the Cubs scoring those runs? Well, directly, Zambrano has .692 OPS with 8 runs produced, while Hill has a .238 OPS with 2 runs produced. If you want to pull your head out of the sand a little bit and aknowledge the concept of scoring conditions, I would bet that Zambrano on average has pitched in better scoring conditions than Hill has.

Ok, so Hill has produced 6 less runs then Zambrano hitting. Doesn't even sort of reduce the gap. And what in the bloody hell does scoring conditions have to do with the larger argument that Hill has been a better pitcher then Zambrano irrespective of wins and losses?

It's not 6 bases, it's 6 runs produced (R+RBI-HR). I can't find lineup value, but let's call it .4 runs a game. And what in the bloody hell does scoring conditions have to do with the larger argument that Hill has been a better pitcher then Zambrano irrespective of wins and losses? It turns out that there are other things that affect a pitcher's ERA than how good he is on a given day, and the strength of the oposing lineup. The park you're playing in, the umpire calling the game, the wind/rain. Scoring conditions. Factor those into Hill's and Zambrano's seasons and I think you'll start to see why their records are not directly representative of their ERA's.

DC and Billy Bucks - thanks for answering my question, that was drving me nuts. Lau and Hriniek were responsible for screwing up a lot of player's swings when they were in vogue - if you're not quick of foot, then the chop thing doesn't help you too much.

Explain to me how Zambrano is responsible for the Cubs scoring those runs? The rest of the team is afraid Z will hit them if they don't score enough.

happy independence day to all. perhaps the cubs have now declared the end of the tyranny known as sub-.500 baseball. and are in the process of overthrowing curses, droughts, and black cats forevermore. here's hoping !

Lau's hitting theory was brutal, it was basically make contact with the ball. And you had all these guys swinging with one hand on the bat with bloop hit balls Ted Williams is the man.

I can't believe I'm saying this but, good article by Mariotti. I'm not sure there's any truth to the inevitability of a sale to Canning, but the conservativeness of Zell certainly puts a damper on our prospects this season. If we find ourselves around the .540 mark at the trade deadline and management doesn't make any moves, what are they telling us about their drive to win? The Major League comparison is apt because if the Cubs are to see the postseason this year, it will be in spite of management not because of them.

Lenny F Harris on Lenny F Harris in todays Tribune (http://preview.tinyurl.com/2bybqn): "Harris said his situation in '03 was different than Jones' and Soriano's because of a salary dispute he has kept to himself until now. "I came to Chicago for $900,000 and at the last minute they told me they only had $600,000," he said. "So a lot of things were going on with me at the time, and it affected me badly. "If I knew that was going to happen, I would've taken $500,000 from the Marlins and stayed [in my hometown]. "When that hit me, it was the first time I really didn't want to play baseball, because I knew what time it was. … Here I am on a team where guys are sitting on the bench making $5 million or $6 million. So they started hitting on the welfare kind of guys, like me. It affected me. It bothered my mind. I didn't say anything. I just played it out." Two words of advice to Lenny: SHUT UP.

"it was basically make contact with the ball." Isn't this the goal of a hitter?

I believe that Dempster's injury is a sham. He's working on converting to the rotation. I also believe the Cubs will move Dempster to the rotation, Marmol to closer and will trade Marshall. I'm starting to believe the Griffey rumors...

if that's true fanzone, then Marshall better be on his A game today after his disaster outing last time. I'd certainly do Marshall + Murton for Junior, but I don't know if the Reds would. Is Junior on good terms with Lou?

So they started hitting on the welfare kind of guys Hmmm.... $600,000 a year vs. $10,000 a year? $15,000 a year? $0 a year? Lenny Harris - do you have any idea what is like to NEED welfare? You were not a "welfare kind of guy." You were a bench player who simply wasn't that good. You have a lot of nerve to compare yourself to someone on welfare because you "only" made $600,000 that year to play baseball. You made more in one year than many in poverty may make in their entire lives.

I disagree with all of the hate on Zambrano. I would be hard pressed to call him the worst pitcher on the staff. Zambrano and Lilly both have 10 quality starts, Hill 9, Marquis 8, Marshall 6. For all intents and purposes, Hill and Zambrano have kept their team in just as many ball games. You can cherry pick stats to show that one is better than the other, but the difference is negligible. Hill may lead in WHIP and ERA, but Zambrano leads the entire staff in IP per start, with over 6.55, Lilly and Hill are at 6.1, Marquis 5.8, and Marshall 5.7. Zambrano also hits better, and has not given up a stolen base all year compared to Hill's 12 - which if you take away Maddux and Chris Young for the Padres is the highest total in the league. Is Zambrano better than Hill? I call it a push at this point, but is Zambrano the worst pitcher on the staff? I disagree.

Also, isn't Charlie Lau credited with helping develop Frank Thomas, Ventura, etc. with the early 1990s White Sox?

I've come to terms with voting for Z in the all-star game. The game itself is a dichotomy. Is it a game celebrating the stars? Or a game to be taken seriously, and won? If it is the latter, regardless of mid-season stats, Zambrano would give the NL all-stars the best chance for a successful inning or two.

Virginia Phil — July 3, 2007 @ 9:59 pm Donaldson in a box score for the first time tonight, catching for Boise. So he hits a home run, Boise up 6-1. ============================== VA PHIL: It was Josh Donaldson's first game at Boise, but not his first game. He played four or five games with the AZL (Mesa) Cubs last week (and I saw all of the games except one). When Cubs sign players, they assign them initially to Fitch Park for a sort of "orientation." So college players who signed too late for the pre-season Boise work-outs at Fitch the week of June 11th will spend about a week with the AZL (Mesa) Cubs before they move up. That's what happened with Josh Donaldson last week, what's happening with 2B-CF Jeffrey Rea (16th round pick out of Mississippi State) this week, and what will very likely happen with SS Darwin Barney (4th round pick out of Oregon State) once he's ready to go early next week. Also, players who signed while recovering from injuries suffered before they signed--like 5th round pick LF Brandon Guyer (shoulder), 9th round draft pick CF Clark Hardman (strained calf), and 38th round pick RHP Yuri Higgins (broken left hand - non-throwing hand)--are assigned to the Fitch Park Rehab Group until they are ready to play in games. Then they will spend about a week with the AZL (Mesa) Cubs, before they receive a more-permanent assignment. BTW, 6th round pick LHP Casey Lambert (ex-UVA closer) has been impressive and has already been promoted from Boise to Peoria. Lambert is the little lefty with the big arm (a la Billy Wagner). He could move VERY rapidly through the Cubs system. And CF Leon Johnson (10th round pick out of BYU) continues to play EXTREMELY well at Mesa. Johnson was the 22-year old draft-eligible sophomore who had his college and baseball career put on hold for a a couple of years while he served an LDS mission in Siberia. Johnson's four brothers are also ball players (one got drafted by the Mariners a couple or three years ago, another is at AAA with the Devil Rays, a third one was drafted out of HS last month by the Phillies, and a fifth is still in HS). Johnson is a REALLY good player, with a high "baseball IQ." He is an outstanding defender with a strong arm, an excellent base runner, base stealer, and bunter, and he has plus-power.

If it is the latter, regardless of mid-season stats, Zambrano would give the NL all-stars the best chance for a successful inning or two. Have you seen Chris Young pitch this year? And wouldn't you rather rest Z so he can help the Cubs win instead of helping with the ASG?

WISCGRAD — July 4, 2007 @ 8:27 am Also, isn’t Charlie Lau credited with helping develop Frank Thomas, Ventura, etc. with the early 1990s White Sox? ========================== WISCGRAD: Charley Lau first got attention as the Kansas City Royals hitting coach (guru) in the 1970's, helping to develop Greorge Brett, Hal McRae, Frank White, and Amos Otis (among others). He even wrote a best-selling book about hitting (The Art of Hitting .300). Lau then got a huge wad of cash to become the hitting coach for the Yankees, but things didn't go well there. He ended up as the White Soix hitting coach in the early 80's, but he died of cancer before he had much of a direct influence there. However, Lau disciple Walt Hriniak (who took the principles taught by Lau and added some of his own ideas) is credited with developing Frank Thomas and Robin Ventura.

Reading between the lines, unless Z was *really* joking about getting the $25K ASG bonus, then yes indeed, Mariotti's (and many others') prediction about Z boarding the "First $100M Bus to Elsewhere" are probably right. Will the rest of this reason solidify Z mentally to Go For the Gold, heading for that major contract payoff? And thereafter, once entrenched in a Zito-esque contract cushiness (presumably Elsewhere), will the waffler return? Say what you will about $25K being a pittance to a millionaire, but my years of working for a self-made tycoon proved nothing else than that they still bend over to pick up a quarter.

Dave in Pittsburgh: Reading between the lines, unless Z was *really* joking about getting the $25K ASG bonus, then yes indeed, Mariotti’s (and many others’) prediction about Z boarding the “First $100M Bus to Elsewhere” are probably right. Will the rest of this reason solidify Z mentally to Go For the Gold, heading for that major contract payoff? That's what you are hoping for when you allow a player to go into a contract year... you hope he gives you a great performance and he's well on his way to 20 wins.

Just saw on MSN's front page the Fox power rankings...the blurb on the Cubs mentioned that Kerry Wood is throwing from a mound and could begin working out of the bullpen in late July. Anyone heard of this? Any credence?

I know it is foolish to dream this... but how cool would it be to have Marmol, Wood, Howry, and Dempster in the bullpen? Of course, a decent lhp would be nice (and I guess Ohman can and would do that), but Wood and Dempster can both get lefties out. And Marmol, at least right now, can get ANYONE out. But I know... a dream.

I haven't heard much on KW this week. He was with the team on the recent homestand. I heard he was just cleared to start throwing but not off of a mound yet and any return to the roster wouldn't be expected until August given a no setback scenerio. Don't hold your breath though, cause you'll definitely turn cubbie Blue before you see KW in the bullpen here.

Mark, it's so that mid-afternoon BBQs don't interfere with our enjoyment of the Cubs game!

Kerry had a bullpen session sometime last week I believe, I think that it involved throwing off the mound. My guess is he's had some more since. I'll start paying attention when he's on the 25-man roster.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
