Why doesn't Pie play CF - this is BS - I like Pagan as a sub or as a defensive replacement in RF - but he sucks as a CF. I will add my vote to send Pie down to the minors if he is simple going to be a bench guy.

http://blogs.trb.com/sports/custom/weblog/wgnsports/2007/07/game_notes_… The Game Notes for tonight are pretty sweet... * The Cubs have won 15 of their last 21 games played in Pittsburgh. * The Cubs have gone 11-2 over their last 13 games – the best record in the majors since June 22. * The Pirates have not committed a single error over their last 11 games. The longest errorless streak this season has been by the Mets, who went 12 straight games without an error from May 20 to June 3. * The Pirates have scored 14 extra-inning runs this season (tied for the most in the majors), while the Cubs have scored just one run in extra innings (tied for the fewest in the majors). * Over the last 50 years, only one player (minimum 70 PA) has hit for a higher average against the Pirates than Alfonso Soriano (.413). Jose Cruz Jr. has hit .415 against the Bucs over his career. * Over his last eight games, Adam LaRoche has hit .500 (16/32) with five homers, 11 RBI and 11 extra-base hits. * Over his last four divisional starts, Jason Marquis has allowed a total of just three earned runs. So far this season, Marquis’ 1.67 ERA against the NL Central is the lowest by any pitcher (minimum 30 IP).

Well, Rory, it is a lefty tonight. However, I do agree that Pie on the bench is unacceptable. Let's see him get through a slump, adjust and become a great player. If he doesn't, at least we'll know. Pagan is the perfect fourth outfielder, not the perfect center fielder.

As long as we keep winning I think I'm gonna defer to Lou on when Pie starts. If he's as good as advertised he'll start to impress the coaching staff and earn his spot. Until then let the guys who get paid to fix his swing do just that.

Just a week ago, Rocky Cherry was pitching for the Chicago Cubs against the Milwaukee Brewers in front of a packed house at Wrigley Field in Chicago. This morning, Rocky Cherry had the pleasure of throwing a DL rehab assignment for the AZL Cubs versus the AZL Brewers in front of about a dozen fans at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa in 110+ degree heat. Oh, the humanity! Cherry worked just one inning (that would be the top of of the 1st), and had an easy 1-2-3 11-pitch inning. He was sharp, threw strikes, and his slider looked great. Unfortunately, the AZL Cubs bats took a siesta today, as the Brewers held the Cubs scoreless until the bottom of the 9th. The Cubs rallied for a couple of runs in the final frame, as Jeffrey Rea (18th round pick out of Mississippi State) singled, Leon Johnson (10th round pick out of BYU) continued his hot hitting--tripling into the right-field corner, and Luke Sommer (30th round pick out of the University of San Francisco) doubled down the RF line, producing two runs. But that's all they got, there wasn't any more. box score The Cubs roving minor league base-running and outfield instructor Bob Dernier is at Fitch Park this week, working with the Mesa Cubs on the finer points of base-stealing, base-running, and outfield play. It's always good to see The Deer! Found this little nugget off Yahoo which sums up my Matt Murton position... Another guy who needs to break the tyrannical yoke is Matt Murton. Murton put up an OPS of .919 in the second half last year in the Majors at age 24, and suddenly found himself fighting for playing time with Cliff Floyd and, after Felix Pie got called up, Jacque Jones. Sure, Murton's struggled this year, but that was in 119 sporadic at-bats. What's worse, the Cubs tried to play him only against lefties for a while even though Murton's never had trouble hitting right-handed pitching. The problem is that Floyd and Jones (two lefties who can't hit lefties) needed to get at-bats, and that left few chances for Murton against northpaws. In other words, he was penalized not because of an inability on his part but because of his teammates' shortcomings. Now the Cubs can't even find a taker for Jones' contract, and Floyd is at best an injury-prone 34-year-old replacement level player in right field. Meanwhile, Murton's back at Triple-A. Murton sure would look good playing for the Yankees. I bet they would swap Abreu for him.

I think Clark Hardman takes the Cubs Farm System Best Name crown from the aforementioned Rocky Cherry.

AZ Phil, Why are the Tigers allowed to replace Neifi during his suspension? I thought a team had to play a man down?

It's the bottom of the 2nd and I'd like to go on record and say I don't think this line up can score 2 runs against a lefty.

MikeC: Murton sure would look good playing for the Yankees. I bet they would swap Abreu for him. Jim Hendry: "Want to trade Abreu for Matt Murton?" Brian Cashman: "Matt who? Mutton? Never heard of him... and you want Abreu? Screw off."

HR drought for the Cubs has grown to epic proportions. The Pirates can jack them at will...the Cubs-- not so much. It's the botton of the 3rd and I'd like to go on record as saying the Cubs will go homerless again today. The Cubs will not homer tonight.

chifan3887 — July 6, 2007 @ 5:24 pm AZ Phil, Why are the Tigers allowed to replace Neifi during his suspension? I thought a team had to play a man down? =================== CHIFAN: There are two types of suspensions. 1. A player who is suspended as the result of violating MLB's banned substance policy can be placed on his club's Restricted List for the period of time that the player is suspended. A player on the Restricted List does not count against his club's 25-man roster or 40-man roster. Being placed on the Restricted List literally means a player is on an unpaid Leave of Absence. (The Restricted List can also be used when a player leaves a club for "personal reasons"). 2. A player who is suspended by MLB as the result of "bad behavior" on the field counts against his club's 25-man roster and 40-man roster while he serves his suspension. His club must play one-man short while the player is suspended.

Doug Dascenzo — July 6, 2007 @ 5:06 pm Is Rocky Cherry actually injured, or was it just a roster move? ======================== DOUG: It was a legitimate injury (shoulder stiffness).

bad day for cubs ex-SS's... BALTIMORE SHORTSTOP FREDDIE BYNUM HAS LEFT THE GAME IN THE THIRD INNING WITH AN APPARENT LEFT HAMSTRING INJURY.

Oh, I'd just like to say that Eric Gagne blew a save tonight, so that means he sucks.

interesting quote from Neifi on the AP story on his suspension: "I say to my fans {he should have been more precise and said Dusty} that I am not stupid," Perez told the Dominican radio program Impacto Deportivo in his homeland. "I know the difference between good and bad and there are things that are going to be known going forward, but my lawyer has advised me not to talk for now." So does he have an addiction to the substance he got suspended for using or a medical condition that he has to use the banned substance for? or both? Sounds like this story is not over.

"Bad day for the White Sox too…MIN scored 32 runs on them today!" What is sad is the last 9 runs scored on them happened after they had to use their starting pitcher in the lineup because Redmond had to be taken out of the game, after Thome lost his bat on a swing and hit Redmond in the head. Mauer was DH'ing and had to replace him.

here is the link on a lengthy analysis of Jacque Jones from Marc Normandin of Baseball Prospectus (subscription required)...mostly says he sucks but will suck less if the wind starts blowing out at Wrigley, so start praying to Notus the greek god of wind. http://tinyurl.com/ypelve The article has some great diagrams of where HR's have landed at Wrigley in 2006 and this yr.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
