TCR Friday Notes

A few quick tidbits for your discussion... - Bruce Miles with some news and notes heading into the break. The cliff notes version is that Hendry reiterated to him that he'll have the resources to add payroll for the stretch drive, Piniella is smart and Dempster wants to be a starter. At least that's what I got from it. - Neifi Perez suspended 25 games for using a banned stimulant. Reader (CA) Phil had the best line:
Now we know what put the ! in Neifi!
- Ryan Dempster won't be activated until after the break and Kerry Wood may start a minor league rehab assignment at around the same time. Wood could possibly be activated by the end of July.

I saw that 1200 AM is now doing White Sox broadcasts en Espanol. I was hoping the past few years that the Cubs would beat them to the punch, although clearly the best marketing opportunity walked out the door early on the last day of 2005. Still, it's a shame to see this team continuously get pantsed by the South Side of Chicago Board of Tourism. Takes too many things for granted. No me gusta.

So shouldn't losing a guy with a .487 OPS for 25 games actually make the Tigers a better team?

Probably a repeat but I just saw that Billy Hall went on the 15-day DL with the ankle sprain today. Tony Gwynn recalled, Corey Hart expected to play everyday in centerfield. Hopefully it takes a little of the wind out of their sails.

Btw, I woke up very excited this morning having dreamed last night that Hendry had traded for Tim Hudson, giving up only a Single-A prospect named David Sanchez (?) in return. I couldn't wait to get on here and talk about it. *Sigh*

from rotoworld... Kevin McClatchy will step down as CEO of the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of the season. ----- It's a start. "A decision of this personal and professional magnitude is not the type you make overnight," McClatchy said. "It was something (Pirates chairman) Bob (Nutting) and I have discussed even before the change of control took place in January and something I decided upon a few months ago." McClatchey has been in his role for 11 years, and the Pirates have finished under .500 in every one of them. and he was doing so well....

"although clearly the best marketing opportunity walked out the door early on the last day of 2005. " Nomar Garciaparra didn't leave early on the last day of 2005. You must be thinking of 2004 when Sammy left early.

http://www.philly.com/dailynews/sports/20070706_Paul_Hagen___Dont_bury_… Scouts say the Reds are alerting other clubs that everybody on their roster is available except Aaron Harang, Homer Bailey, Josh Hamilton, Alex Gonzalez and Brandon Phillips. Alex Gonzalez? Really? Always tough to make an impact trade with a division rival though. Maybe some lesser parts which they have none of... According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, there are rumors that Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty and manager Tony La Russa could end up in Cincinnati as a package deal. Reds owner Bob Castellini used to be part of the Cardinals ownership group.

You're right Chad, I got the year wrong. How time flies when you're having fun and winning championships.

Eddie Guardado if the price is right. Working on a one-year, $4M contract, so about $2M. If it's not for a key prospect then yes please.

Re: marketing MLB to the Hispanic market: When the Marlins came into existence in Miami, it was commonly accepted that the large Cuban population in South Florida, known for their passionate interest in beisbol, would storm the gates to watch a Miami team. The Marlins then spent a lot of time and money to elicit the support of this community. It's 14 years later, and they still haven't shown up.

ROB G: Thanks for the BMiles link. I missed that one this morning. The Police Show was really smokin' for the most part - but alas, I cannot compare them to live sows "back in the day". Bruce nailed the following nicely, and I have been intimating the exact sntiments here for three months: "Piniella also isn’t afraid to try things. If they work, he sticks with them. If not, he junks them. But the key thing is he won’t sit still long and watch failure."

Live "sows"? They look pretty damn good for 50+ guys! Definetly NOT sows. sows=SHOWS poor typist

I think barring injuries we really dont need to add guys however, one target we should go after in a trade is Omar Visquel. I think the Giants might settle for a package of Cedeno, Gallagher, and a project prospect.

I cannot compare them to live sows “back in the day”. I can compare them...they were SMOKIN' (mmm...smoked bacon)

If yuo are going to trade for Vizquel, you might as well throw together a package of Izzy and Gallagher for him or something. I believe Cedeno and a low-level prospect is too much for an aging glove.

You know, at some point, you have to ask yourself just how much better are the Vizquels, Guardados, Gagnes, etc. than Cedeno, Petrick, Guzman (if healthy), and even Soto? I'm not saying go with an all youth movement in a pennant chase, but before they start putting Veal, Gallagher, Pie, et al in trades I would like the returning names to sound like Griffey, Buhrle, etc.

I'd dump Izturis on the Giants for "overpaying" prospect wise on Vizquel. They make about the same so no money would be added to our books and give us insurance incase Theriot's bat goes cold or he starts having Barrett like defensive issues. I forgot to add that part to my previous post.

Vizquel? What the hell is wrong with you guys? There is very little difference between Izzy and Vizquel right now. If we are going to get a shortstop, it has to be a shortstop that can hit.

yeah, thought Vizquel picked it up a little with the bat since the bad start but alas he has not. But defensively he's still as good as ever, probably 2nd only to Ozzie all-time with the glove. Huge improvement over the current Izturis with the glove but too much suck with the bat to consider with our new black hole of suck at catching. Why is anyone trading Gallagher?

I got no beef with Gallagher, but I am firm believer in getting rid of Izzy. Now that I look a the so-called "hitting" that Vizquel has been doing, you might as well put up a statue for the both of them and hope for a walk.

Need a shortstop? I hear Neifi Perez can be had fairly cheaply. He saved the season in 2005, remember? Hollandsworth, too. A good left-handed bat. Say, that's a great idea - let's bring in more washed-up veterans. Then sign them to multi-year deals. Oops... won't work. Dusty's not here to get "his boys" their ABs.

Things are going pretty well right now, but can we make the playoffs with the following issues: 1) No bat at short 2) No bat at catcher 3) No bat in CF 4) Questionable/Injury prone bat in RF 5) 2 basically rookie SPs What gets upgraded first? I vote for SS, then RF, then C.

I think that are definately SSs and RFs out there to be had, but the catcher situation will be tricky. There are only a couple good bats at C and those teams won't want to give up on them. I think we could go on a run with the two-headed automatci out there, if the rest of the lineup is beefed up. IMO

" Huge improvement over the current Izturis with the glove but too much suck with the bat to consider with our new black hole of suck at catching." No way. Back in his day, he was one of the greatest but he's FORTY YEARS OLD. He maybe somewhat of an upgrade with the glove but he is by no means a "huge improvement". Overall he maybe a slight upgrade but that is not enough of an upgrade to make any difference whatsoever.

I would guess if a power bat could be had in RF or CF and I'm talking mega-trade, they'd settle at what we have at SS and C. Otherwise stick with Floyd, JJ, Pie, Pagan whatever and smaller upgrades at SS and/or C and you can't have enough bullpen arms. I would target Rowand or Hunter at this point if they become available for CF. Both are free agents so they wouldn't block Pie, good defensively, etc, etc. Or Adam Dunn :)

uh no, still a huge improvement. Izturis has slipped, Vizquel miracously has not... but I do agree, not worth bringing in...

Realistically, is the a major upgrade a catcher that is available? It would be great but I just don't see it.

Wow, everyone wants to trade Sean Gallagher. Gallagher=Peavy is closer to the truth than this irrational dislike of young players, especially pitchers. To me, there are two legit starter prospects at Daytona or above, Gallagher and Veal, and Veal is pretty far away. Holliman, maybe, but his 35 walks, 60 Ks in 99 innings don't reassure that he can go up two levels. Then there's this guy Santo at Daytona who has been making a statement lately. But that's it. Gallagher you have to keep, unless you're crazy about Marquis and Marshall. I think Hendry will resist any thought of trading youth, unless he has duplicates at certain positions like second base. The idea is to become a competitive team for four or five years in a row and strike gold once or twice. It was reported this morning (in the Sun Times somewhere) that Hendry wouldn't let San Diego talk about Murton. That's good!

Adam Dunn = Defensive Wizard I don't know about anyone else, but his wizardry out there is just amazing. I cannot see how anyone could vote against giving him a gold glove every year...but he needs to really work on the power stroke. I mean, how can you call 40+ homeruns per year decent?

I guess there is no reason to split hairs but I still believe that Izturis is very solid defender. Vizquel may still be better but he's not the guy we used to watch highlights of back in 1995.

I am probably going to jinx the team by saying this but this team reminds me a little of the 2003 team. 1) No bat at short: Check 2) No bat at catcher: Check 3) No bat in CF: Patterson was having a good year but got hurt after the break and was replaced by Lofton in a deadline deal. 4) Questionable/Injury prone bat in RF: Sammy on the dl part of the season and suspended for corked bat (did hit 40 homers though) 5) 2 basically rookie SPs: Prior and Z not rookies but neither was really established (same as Hill and Marshall) While there are key differences (nobody will confuse Hill and Marshall with Prior and Wood) and Sammy even with his warts was a better hitter in 2004 than Floyd, both teams have similar flaws. In addition, the 2003 team had a huge hole at third base prior to the A-Ram Lofton deal. The 2003 really became the team that I enjoyed rooting for after that deal. I'm anxious to see what changes Hendry may make to this team.

It was reported this morning (in the Sun Times somewhere) that Hendry wouldn’t let San Diego talk about Murton. That’s good! Hendry and Towers... Towers: How about this kid Murton? Hendry: Zip it! (with hand gesture) Towers: Matt Hendry: When a problem comes along you must zip it Towers You got him from Boston Hendry: Look I'm Zippy longstocking Towers: Nevermind...

Heard Mike Napoli was available, but he got hurt. Catchers on the move might include: Likely traded * Miguel Olivo * Gregg Zaun * Mike Lieberthal (I'd gladly take him to split duties with Hillowen) Fifty fifty * David Ross (class A douchebag, but can hit a little) * Ronny Paulino (many teams are chasing him) Very, very unlikely but possible * Kelly Shoppach (PLEASE, HENDRY!) * John Buck (having career power season, still cheap, might require a top prospect) * Chris Snyder

Jacos, I agree the Lofton A-Ram trade really made the season in 2003. At the all star break the team had more problems than the current team does.

Okay, Rob, I knew I should have looked for the article rather than paraphrase it. It's a piece titled "Three Views on the Cubs."
Matt Murton may be gone, but he's not forgotten. He was slumping at the plate and not versatile enough in the field to fit into Lou Piniella's changing roster, but the 25-year-old outfielder still is considered a big part of the team's future. The Cubs showed that when they flatly refused to consider trade scenarios that involved Murton during discussions with the Padres that eventually sent Michael Barrett to San Diego a week after Murton's demotion. He's hitting OK at Class AAA Iowa but still isn't hitting for the power the Cubs would like to see before bringing him back up.

That is way too strange. I am hoping that this means we will pick up another player of ARam's caliber. This time we can pick up a SS. Think the Mets would trade us Jose Reyes? I'd throw in Izzy and Jock for him. I'd even pay both of their remaining salaries.

I don't see any impact players we could have gotten for Matt Murton from the Padres. He has the potential that could net us a very big name. I'm not saying that we could flip him for Miguel Cabrera (not going to happen) but that is the sort of move we need to make if we are going to trade him. Get a great player that will soon require too much money for the current team to pay.

Doug Dascenzo: Things are going pretty well right now, but can we make the playoffs with the following issues: 1) No bat at short 2) No bat at catcher 3) No bat in CF 4) Questionable/Injury prone bat in RF 5) 2 basically rookie SPs What gets upgraded first? I vote for SS, then RF, then C. I agree you can't just sit complacent while the rest of the contenders in your league improves, even if things are going well. I'd like to see 1 more bat, at CF, C, or SS and 1 reliever. The rookie pitchers will be ok, as long as their is a solid bullpen "safety net". The last game was a good example.

My Friends here in the Natti refer to Eddie Guardado as, "Anyday Eddie", as in anyday you wanna get your fatass off the DL and pitch we would love your help in this miserable Reds bullpen.... David Ross hits a 1 homer for every 26 strikeouts it seems and without looking is avg is well under the Mendoza line... he is decent behind the plate though... The only players i'd be interested in would be Phillips or Harang...

*there, not their, silly me. Also, whatever bat they pick up should be left-handed.

I was just having some fun VA Phil with your word choice, I already saw a couple articles on it this morning. Probably should have put in my Friday Notes... btw for all, in another articles Miles said the rumored JJ, Izturis, Barrett for Greene/Bowen was never really out there according to Hendry.

David Ross also sees 4.21 P/PA and has a homerun every 15.5 ABs, both stellar numbers. Bowen/Ross would be a decent enough tandem.

I believe the rumor was Murton for K Green and the catchers in the Padres deal.

really, we need another left-handed bat? Fontenot, Floyd, Pagan, Pie, Bowen, Hill, Ward, JJ, Izturis. Not to mention everyone of our starting pitchers (Wow, that's weird) .It would be nice if we got Adam Dunn or Griffey and all, but I don't think it's that much of a problem with our lineup.

David Ross is hitting below the Mendoza line - pass.... I don't think he's much defensively either. John Buck would be interesting but costly. Zaun's not terrible, he's been hitting decently since he got off the DL.

Zaun's the answer for our catching duties and he'll be available unless the Blue Jays think they're still in it. They already have prospect Curtis Thigpen waiting for his spot.

OK, here's my next question: Let's say we can only seriously upgrade one position out of our current weaknesses (SS, RF, CF, C). What one player out there who's been rumored to be available would put this team over the top? If Rowand is available (I haven't heard this, but it's been mentioned on this board), I vote for him. Next on my list is Griffey, followed by Tejada, then Abreu. Anyone else?

Wow, the WSox have scored 8 runs in the 7th and are getting their butts kicked. Ken Williams likes to think he's all coy but I'm not sure how anyone could think they're going to do anything but trade the whole sha-bang.

Doug D, I don't think Tejada will play again before the trade deadline. I guess of the guys available (and it's a worse class than usual, and that's saying something) maybe like a Ty Wigginton type. But the more likely scenario is we don't do or get jack. No jack Wilson, no jack Jones ... oh wait...

Samaramadingdong has another good outing! I'm sensing improvement! CHC HiA Samardzija, Jeff .......... 6.0 6 1 1 2 4 4.72 W (2-5)

Nice day for John Garland -- 3 and one third IP, 11 hits, 11 eaned runs. zthanks for protecting my ERA, Ozzie. They have a double-dip today, though -- guess Ozzie didn't want to go tot he pen too early. Sorry for the Sox talk -- at least it was Chicago-centric.

Oh yeah, forgot Tejada was injured. Replace him on the list with.... ARod (yeah right)

I would think Rowand would only be available for multiple pitchers, if at all. Anybody would have to give up a great deal to get him. The Phils are still in it. Pat Burrell is blowing hard. The entire outfield except Rowand isn't hitting at all. They need all the hitting that can hold on to.

Burrell + some money for jack jones. we both get rid of guys who need a new start.

If you thought Barrett was bad with the glove ... well, compared to Greg Zaun, Barrett was Johnny Bench. I saw him play for the Marlins, and you don't want him behind the plate. He's a good pinch-hitter and you can get away with spot-starting him 20-30 games a year. What would you propose giving up for for Zaun?

"The entire outfield except Rowand isn’t hitting at all. They need all the hitting that can hold on to." The Flyin' Hawaiian is hitting. He's the only part of that outfield that's a piece of their future.

what strikes me as quite phenomenal about Pat Burrell is that he's hitting a robust .207, yet his entire line is 207/371/392. That OBP isn't a misprint.

"Next on my list is Griffey..." CW of TCR posters generally believe that a., he's on the DL more than he plays (something Hendry STAYED AWAY from this off-season, excl. Floyd), b. he is STILL owed a ton of money (meaning management will not pop the cork), c. wouldn't you say our OF is pretty full right now? d. he is OLD, and injury prone, and more expensive than he's worth Other than these things, he'd be a great addition if we can trade Jack Jones and Izturis for him straight up, OR if he's DFA'd and no-one claims him.

According to Levine, Buerhle was packing his locker today. I really dont want to change our catching rotation. A change could hurt the pitchers.

Isn't Griffey only owed something like $6.5 million next year? That's not a ton of money. Yeah, he's been pretty injury-prone, but if/when he gets injured Floyd can play again. Until then, I'll take Griffey's homer-happy resurgence in right on a daily basis. He can't be happy playing for the worst team in the league, can he?

In other news, the Kearns trade is looking more and more even with the days. Kearns: .248/.317/.367 (wow, Jacque-ish!) Felipe: .237/.291/.334 (with awful defense) Wagner: out for year ----- Majewski: 5.1 IP, 16 H, 10 ER; 15.88 ERA. Bray: injured Clayton and Harris: not with CIN

Are we really going to start the Adam Dunn discussion again?? Cue crunch:Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn Adam Dunn

I was watching a Phillies game the other night and the announcers were talking about how the Phils have a surplus of outfielders and Rowand seems to be the odd man out. I don't know what it would take to get him, but I think he is the kind of player that can be a spark plug for a team.

If the Cub's are serious about a playoff run this year, adding Jr. would be a solid move so long as he can play CF. It would cost a ton in characters heading towards Cincy, but it would be worth it as Jr. could just help push the Cub's over the hump from "meh" team to "playoff" team. Dunn? All wood, no leather.

Carlos, Buerhle is suppose to start tommrrow, so I guess if he is packaging his locker today I guess that means a trade in the next 24 hours is possible. The Dodgers have to be the front runner with the injuries to 3/44, Nosterdomious's brother, Penny's blister issues and Colletti's willingness to throw away prospects.

If Billingsley is headed to the South Side, I might go on a hunt to kill Ned Colletti.

Kearns would be a savvy addition. I am sure he will improve with his home games being played in a ballpark and not in a tarmac.

"...adding Jr. would be a solid move so long as he can play CF." Well, those days are long gone. The Jr. with Web gems cir. 1999-2002 are a thing of the past.

Buehrle said he was sort of anticipating a trade but also clearing out some junk before the All-Star break. Nothing imminent... Since the Reds would probably be happy to just get rid of Griffey's contract at this point (or some of it), a deal with the Cubs is possible. Problem is I don't see the Cubs taking that contract on. Griffey's deal: 2007: 6 mil 2008: 6 mil 2009: 16.5 mil option or 4 mil buyout 2009-2024: $57.5 million in deferred money Balloon payment of $16.5 mil due in 2024 So yeah, good luck dealing him Reds.

Griffey gets 4% interest as well on the deferred money between 2009-2024. Reds only shot at moving him is to take on all the deferred money and balloon payment and hope another team is willing to take on the 2007-2009 years. At least if the Reds want any decent players in return. Griffey's also a 10/5 man so he has a full NTC although that would probably not be much of an obstacle for the Cubs as I think him and Lou get along fine.

Now Kearns in RF, ChiFan? Am I the only Cub fan who feels guilty about the fact that Matt Murton is in the minors? Come back, Matt. All is forgiven. (Just promise you won't drop any more fly balls.)

Re #60: Whatever happened to Samninja as his nickname? That would be one of the great monikers to play along to of all time...image him coming out to the mound with nunchucks...

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.
