Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Pirates (2 of 3)

Game Chat Ted Lilly vs. John Van Benschoten Lineups:
Soriano LF Bautista 3B
Theriot SS Sanchez 2B
Lee 1B Nady CF
Ramirez 3B Bay LF
Ward RF Phelps 1B
DeRosa 2B Doumit RF
Jones CF Paulino C
Hill C Wilson SS
Lilly P Van Benschoten P
Sorry about that, MVN servers decided not to post this as scheduled. Let's retroactively complain about the lineup that scored 7 runs tonight.

Comments

Ward in RF is such a stupid idea. The Pirates are definitely going to beat us with such horrible defense in RF. Also, Theriot should be sent down and will definitely not get any hits tonight.

seriously though...14 hits and only one XBH? I want the power team I was promised!!! How did Lilly look? I didn't tune in until the 7th inning and that was just on the radio and he started getting hit around a bit. Were the first 6 innings as dominating as the box score suggests?

Dominating? I'd say no. Sharp, commanding, I say yes. Difference is that against a better team, I say 3 or 4 runs. But over 7 innings, that's fine.

Rob, I said the same thing in the last thread and in the game chat to Chad. Where the hell is the power this team was supposedly built for? I'm not minding 7 runs on 13 singles and a double, but if this teams power element came around, it would be scary. This could be a really good offense if they started to hit for power! And I agree with the Marmol thing. Holy hell that guy can pitch when he just goes out there and hurls for an inning or two. I love it. Does DLee's power loss come from the injury? People are suspecting that Matsui lost some of his power from a wrist injury last season as well, but Matsui is old and has holes in his face and that might be why. Lee is younger and should be jacking HRs right now.

You know things are going well when Cubs fans are concerned about HOW we are winning as opposed to whether we are winning in the first place. I think we all know that the power numbers will even out over time and a one week "power outage" does not trump the career numbers of the guys on this roster. It's kind of reassuring -- even a little amusing -- to see the team win this way, actually. By the by, after the ASB 17 of our next 20 games are against sub-.500 teams. Good times.

and that's how many games it would be great to win in the next 20 games, 17. That would put us 17 games over .500 and we would be in first.

We're two games over .500 now...so even if we lose tomorrow, and then win 17 games, we'd be more than 17 games over .500 :)

not winning 17 of 20. 17 wins 3 losses = 14games over. Plus three over tomorrow...

Math is hard. Loading up on Zambrano starts, is proabably a good thing for the Cubs and a good thing for his Cy Young chace. Lets hope he does something special tomorrow to as a 'stick it in your ear' to all the NL players that didn't vote for him.

Here's a scary thought from Kenny Rosenthal: The Rangers and Brewers were close to a trade: Akinori Otsuka to the Brewers for Tony Gwynn Jr. Rosenthal seemed to dislike it, but I think it made sense for the Crew. Regardless, Bill Hall's injury thwarted the deal as Gwynn will be needed to man center. Boy, Turnbow-Otsuka-Cordero would have been pretty nasty. Thanks, Bill Hall!

Gwynn Jr. for Otsuka? That's it? Gwynn Jr. wasn't even a top 10 Brewers prospect in the last couple of years. Get in on that Hendry....

In today's Trib- "Will Ohman said he's still waiting to hear if he'll get called upon as an emergency fill-in All-Star. Otherwise, he plans to attend a family reunion in Florida and, like many other Cubs, generally ignore the game." Emergency fill-in? Is there an All-Star Game in hell that I didn't know about?

Emergency fill-in? Is there an All-Star Game in hell that I didn’t know about? Umm... pretty sure he was joking on that one.

Jacos, I heard that Barrett might be an emergency fill-in , also. Not in the game itself but behind the plate in the home-run derby, per the request of many of the NL sluggers who say they "just feel comfortable swinging with him back there."

per the request of many of the NL sluggers who say they “just feel comfortable swinging with him back there.” Well... based on how Marquis, Hill, and Marshall have been pitching to Hill/Bowen since Barrett left, maybe they would prefer one of the Cubs current catchers.

jordan: Where the hell is the power this team was supposedly built for? I’m not minding 7 runs on 13 singles and a double, but if this teams power element came around, it would be scary. This could be a really good offense if they started to hit for power! Hopefully that power shows up when the schedule gets tougher and bam. If you believe in regression to the mean, you have to also believe in progression to the mean. Matsui lost some of his power from a wrist injury last season as well, but Matsui is old and has holes in his face and that might be why lol!

Another soft tossing lefty... Zambrano better throw a shutout.

dave, I can't speak for Bowen, but the Cubs are 12-5 with Hill behind the plate. Marshall's last game pitching to Hill (Washington) was 4-2 Cubs, and Marquis' (Milwaukee) was 5-1 Cubs.

Are there any lefties that aren't "soft tossers"? I could see there being 4 or fewer runs scored in this game. Looks like the Cubs are sending up nothing but right handers.

Interesting twist to that Iowa win last night:
In a 2-2 game, with the winning run at third in the bottom of the ninth, the New Orleans Zephyrs tried to intentionally walk Eric Patterson. However, on the fourth pitch, Patterson reached out and slapped a single past surprised Zephyrs thirdbaseman Andy Tracy to bring home Chris Walker with the game winning run in a thrilling 3-2 comeback Cubs victory.

I am surprised that Melvin didnt ask for Lofton or Cantelnto back. Lofton could have held CF down for the rest of the year and let Hall play in LF the rest of the year. Lofton would be a improvement over the Mench/Jenkins plattoon and given them some playoff expirence. Cantillinatto could have platton with Gross in RF with Hart moving over to CF. The Brewers are deep in the farm and werent giving the cream of the farm in the deal to start with.

"Are there any lefties that aren’t “soft tossers”?" Ask Randy Johnson. Soft tossing = less than 90 MPH fastball, in my opinion.

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!

That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.

Of course, McKinstry runs circles around $25 million man Javier Baez on that Tigers team. Guess who gets more playing time?

    But I digress…

Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.
