I can't find it in me to trash talk our lineup when you juxtapose the Cub's & SF lineups. Sorry.

Ormeier? Molina 5th?

Stl up 2-0 already? :(

actually it's Ortmeier, typo on my part.

Texas 30 Baltimore 3 in the ninth
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/boxscore.jsp?gid=2007...

Never heard of him either :)

yeah, the Orioles only threw 252 pitches in that 9-inning game. Now they have to pitch 8 or 9 innings more in game two of the doubleheader!

Wow!

stat of the night from that 30-3 tex win...

littleton picks up a save (he pitched 3 innings).

keeping that 27 run lead safe is serious business.

"stat of the night"

well...one of 3264924679 stats of the night from that game..

Might as well given Pie a start in center tonight in my opinion...

some Gwyn fella with the Angels got a save last night too protecting a 10+ run lead. Then got sent down today.

somewhere in the bowels of AT&T park, Rich Hill throws his chocolate milk at the TV screen and wonders what he needs to do to get some freaking run support from his offense.

hell, surprised no one's wondering where murton is given its zito on the mound.

Derosa 4/24 174/333/435 vs Zito
JJ 3/19 158/200/158

that's it for anyone with 10+ PA's

im just going on the plain R/L splits...if i had any idea how murton hit vs. lefty curveballs it might be a bit more clear...or unclear.

either way, floyd got the nod tonite...at least he's fresh.

Is a 27-run lead safe with Roberto Novoa?

/shiver.

day game tomorrow too, Ramirez will get a day off, possibly Floyd as well.

Sorry about the double post. Posting from my cellphone.

crunch:
hell, surprised no one’s wondering where murton is given its zito on the mound.

Everyone is too awestruck by the woeful SF lineup to notice.

I came to post about that Texas game...wow.

Gwyn for Angels gave up 4 runs and 2 HR's in the 9th...probably a big factor in him getting sent down.

The other crazy thing about the TEX game was they set the team record for runs scored in a doubleheader, before the second game started.

I saw the score and thought it was a leftover Cowboys-Ravens line...

first 30 run game since 1897.

In other news...Pujols 5 straight games with solo homers.

edit: 5 straight games with homer, tonight not solo.

This is what 30 runs in only four scoring innings looks like (holy shit)

TX 4th: BB; 1B; F4; 1B; 1B (2 RBI); HR (3 RBI); reaches on E5; GO 5-3; GO 1-4.

TX 6th: HR (1 RBI); pitching change; 1B; WP; BB; sac bunt out at 3rd; 1B; GS (4 RBI); SO; 1B; 1B; 1B (RBI); 1B (RBI); 1B (RBI); pitching change; 1B (RBI); F9

Tx 8th: 1B; BB; BB; 1B (RBI); 1B (RBI); GS (4 RBI); BB; pitching change; SO; 2B; 1B (RBI); HR (3 RBI); SO; SO

Tx 9th: BB; BB; 1B; 2B (2 RBI); SO; 1B (RBI); SO; HR (3 RBI); BB; F8

Incidentally, Dave, do you happen to be the same Dave from Pittsburgh who sent the Geovany Soto question in to Jim Callis at BA?

Regarding a comment in the previous post about Andruw Jones deserving of being on the all-time gold glove team - http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2...

TEX-BAL nightcap is tied 3-3. Can you imagine if BAL scratches out a 4-3 win, the day is essentially a wash?

Webb finally gives up a run... but the Diamondbacks are up 2-1.

How about a Dempster and Soto for Molina and a B- pitching prospect trade this winter.

Anyone have any idea why Jacque is hitting #8 and Fox #6?

Haven't we seen this game before?

Is it too early?

Wow, the Cubs have NO HITS against Zito. Zito hasn't given up ANY HITS so far ... wow.

if i were rich hill ...

bonds removing armor as i set up on intentional ball four: fast ball to the ear.

if i missed that opportunity: next at-bat: fast ball to the ear on first pitch ...

just me ...

Anyone have any idea why Jacque is hitting #8 and Fox #6?

Because Jock can't hit lefties.

maybe he's waiting for is last chance to face bonds ( strategic as opposed to tactical thinking ... ) doubt it ....

floyd!!! second night in a row, this one was crushed however.

giants announcers called the squeeze, even saying to pitchout on 3-1. would have worked...

Cubs showing some spunk and gumption on this trip, bet you boys don't have some newfangled statistic to measure that! ;)

cubs win

Wonderful win

Great pitching, timely hitting, Brewers lose. What else do we want? A Cardinal loss would have been nice, but hey.

good teams need to beat bad teams,we havnt
looked great last two games but when we needed it we got it.

Actually, (CA)Phil, I think the stats clearly show that our pitching has been out and out awesome. Dempster is also right back where he was and is hopefully the clearcut closer.

I agree, was just kidding around, giddy from the win.

That was the most enjoyable game I can remember the whole year. Great pitchers duel, a lot of strategy moves, clutch hits, some luck...and an extra inning win.

I'm still worried about our offense though....we've had a bunch of grinding wins, and 2 great innings, but not much consistent offense since the final game of the Cincy series.

Fun as hell game to watch. Go Cubs! Let's sweeeeeeeeeep.

Yeah, and right now, what's going on with that last Cubs "stud" who stood up to Bonds?

Maybe Rich Hill doesn't want a string of steroidal-enhanced voodoo bad karma.

By a very slight margin, the Cub's have an easier remaining schedule:

Avg Opponents Wpct%, CHC: .472 (.4716)
Avg Opponents Wpct%, MIL: .472 (.4720)
Avg Opponents Wpct%, STL: .479

They're in the lead in the standings. They'll have Soriano coming back in a week or so. It's there for the Cub's to take, they just have to take it.

Woot, Cubs alone in first again!

For what it's worth...Here are the latest playoff odds from Baseball Prospectus. This is a calculation based on a million runs of the rest of the season based on run team-by-team differential to date, adjusted for strength of schedule of both played and remaining games:

To win division:
Cubs: 54.82935%
Brewers: 31.74672%
Cardinals: 13.23395%

For Wild Card:
Cubs: 1.73050%
Brewers: 2.11457%
Cardinals: 0.8395%

Brewers have better chance of getting wild card than the Cubs simply because they have less of a chance to win the division.

Model predicts Cubs on average to win division by 2 games, with 85 wins.

Although in 2004 I remember this same playoff odds report giving the Cubs a 90% chance of making the playoffs with only two weeks to go...! But I'm very optimistic about this season, the team seems to be getting its groove back this last week.

Anyone else waiting for Phil to start calling posters whippersnappers?

Just stay off his lawn.

Lovin' Wordpress!

lol

Maybe if we bash wordpress a lot, it will start working well.

Kinda' like the lineup bashing, right?

Yeah, but blockhead25, those two games were awfully well pitched by the Giants starters. I was at the Lincecom game and he was amazing. As soon as the Cubs got them out of the games, the games were over.

The key at this time of the year is pitching. As long as our starters do the job, we'll be okay. Time for Lilly to suck up the gut a little bit.

I have a feeling Z will pitch well tonight. He better, Cain is another good one.

during last nights game Len/Bob said Piniella was considering reactivating Soriano for the Brewer series next Tuesday. Sori want to play this weekend. As Harry says, "there's danger there, Cherie."

BTW... the Cubs top three starters have been really damn good:

VORP/ERA+ (rankings in () ):

Carlos Zambrano - 33.9 (28)/117 (35)
Rich Hill - 33.8 (29)/123 (26)
Ted Lilly - 33.8 (30)/116 (35)

In other words, while none of them have pitched like top 10 pitchers, all have essentially pitched as low #1's/very high #2's.

And Rich Hill continues to be the most underrated player on the Cubs.

THT's resident mechanics columnist Carlos Gomez with some nice things to say about Josh Vitters. The highlights:

Vitters rated with the third best swing in this year's draft behind LaPorta (Brewers, 7th overall) and Kulbacki (Padres, 40th overall). And I quote: "A little too "handsy" a swing, but he turns quickly on the ball and has an excellent swing plane."

Also rated as the third best position player in the draft behind C Wieters (Orioles, 5th overall) and OF Heyward (Braves, 14th overall)

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/the...

Here's this from the Sun-Times, Dr. Cubster:

As ''exciting'' as the workout was for the injured leadoff hitter, who had been swinging in the batting cages for several days, Piniella said the team is sticking to its Labor Day time frame for Soriano's return. Tuesday was the first day he was eligible to be activated.

''No, he's not ready,'' Piniella said. ''The fact that he's been taking batting practice has got his blood flowing a little bit, but we've got to be careful. One more setback, and the whole season's gone.''

Article went on to say that he was going to take live BP for the first time today.

DC Tom, that's some SEXY stats. 2004 was an Awful Year - complete collapse against crap teams down the stretch. I think this team is actually a little less talented player-by-player, but is playing more consistently and plays more like a team. In Dusty we Busty.

To get two wins against the Giants when facing Lincecum and Zito, I'm happy. Zito hasn't been amazing, but he's a lefty...and soft-tosser at that. Exactly the type of pitcher the goat curse has made us unable to amass any sort of offense against. I'll settle for it.

Still wishing we added a bat at the deadline...

Oh, Green Lantern, I meant to bring this up a while ago and I forgot.

Even if you think the squeeze is on, I think it's really hard to pitch-out and intentionally walk a guy who can't hit that is in his first AB since Memorial Day to load the bases for the Riot, who is posting a Pujolsian week (400/444/600).

I'd want to be really, really sure that he was squeezing before I walk the backup catcher to bring the leadoff guy up.

Pujolsian

Well done.

Wes...that article seems to be older info, since Len/Bob said their Soriano news and Piniella info was after he took live BP as well as some OF practice yesterday.

Here's the shortened version of what Will Carroll/Baseball Prospectus says in his latest UTK column regarding Ben Sheets:

The Brewers are fighting for their playoff lives right now, but much of their hope is forward-looking. Ben Sheets is on the verge of coming back...His strained finger made it through Monday's simulated game, though he did develop a small blister. He's definitely not headed to the minors. Instead, the question is whether he'll start on Saturday, or whether they'll hold him back and throw him in their important series against the Cubs next week. By Thursday, we'll know what they've decided.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sport...

Aramis isn't going to get his day off anymore.

Hill, Z & Lilly set-up to pitch against the Brewers next week.

Aramis isn’t going to get his day off anymore.

Well... being that his only "back-up" (i.e. the player who has to replace him, but not necessarily at 3rd) is Pumpkinot, that is probably a good decision of A-Ram can handle it.

Man... the infield depth kinda' sucks on the Cubs right now...

Wow, I didn't have anything prepared. This is so unexpected. First of all, I'd like to say how honored I am to receive this front-page quote. I need to thank sweet, baby Jesus, my parents, and of course, the entire TCR crew for making all of this possible.

I'm just overwhelmed. Where's that music coming from? Oh, is my time up? Ok. Thank you, thank you.

Sounded so nice had to say it thrice.

I’m just overwhelmed.

Doug D... you should be a PR rep/speech writer for Josh Vitters.

I was just so excited.

In other news, WordPress is bad.

DD,
Are you thanking Sweet young 8 lb 6 oz baby jesus. In his manger watching his Baby Einstein developmental videos? Are you praising traditional middle aged jesus?

Curb your enthusiasm, Rynox, the Central Division is not what it seems. Since it's primarily inter-divisional play from here on out, what may really count is how teams in the division have done so far versus each other.

We have only one team that's had trouble.
Houston 21-30

We have four teams around .500
Chicago 27-26
Milwaukee 28-27
Cincinnati 27-27
Pittsburgh 25-26

And one stand out:
St.Louis 30-22

If those winning precentages hold, St.Louis stands to pick up 2 games on us via interdivisional play.

However, there's no doubt that the Cubs should win the Central. They're the only team with positive raw pythagoreans.

RS-RA

+52 Cubs
-9 Milwaukee
-57 St.Louis
-77 Houston
-72 Cincinnati
-75 Pittsburgh

However, there’s no doubt that the Cubs should win the Central. They’re the only team with positive raw pythagoreans.

Wow... Mil's numbers have changed drastically over the last month or so. The Cubs and Brewers used to be within a few runs in terms of run differential.

By the way, how on earth was there a future Marty McFly?? It makes no sense. If Marty McFly goes forward in a time machine, then does the other McFly just materialize a few weeks later and live in the other one's place? When Doc put Einstein in the DeLorean and sent him ahead 1 minute, was there an alt-Einstein waiting to bark at him from Doc's trailer? Of course not. So why should there be another Marty?

Hello! Anybody home up there, McFly?

Question on Sept 10 game. Is it a suspended game so Z gets credit for 3 scoreless innings or will it start over? I tried reading the rules at MLB.com (Rules 4.10 and 4.12) and I just more confused. MLB changed the rules recently about suspended games and I don't know what the new ones are.
Thanks.
And why isn't Murton starting???

it starts over...credit only happens in suspended games or games called after 5 innings with one team winning

Question on Sept 10 game. Is it a suspended game so Z gets credit for 3 scoreless innings or will it start over?

It starts over... those three innings never existed.

I like to picture my Jesus in a tuxedo t-shirt, it says like, i wanna be formal, but i'm here to party too. i like too party so i like my Jesus to party.

per the score - the cubs acquire Craig Monroe for PTBNL

new thread up...trade

That agrees with 4.10(e) - "if a game is called before it has become a regulation game"
But doesn't agree with 4.12(a) Game shall become a suspended game for any of following reasons - (7)The game has not become a regulation game

Chad's Jesus has a mullet.

Don't get me started!

And why isn’t Murton starting???

Because he doesn't hit or field very well?

Murton's future with the Cubs depends on how he does in the next five weeks in a mostly fill-in role, like his pinch-hitting opportunity last night with the lead run on second.

Hit a line drive once in a while, Matt, even if it's caught. These choppers and pop flies are getting old.

Because he doesn’t hit or field very well?

Well... he hit better than Fox in AAA, and Fox doesn't field well either.

Hit a line drive once in a while, Matt, even if it’s caught. These choppers and pop flies are getting old.

Have you been watching him since he got recalled? He has been hitting line drives.

Rich Hill and Barry Zito are less than two years apart in age...

By the way, how on earth was there a future Marty McFly?? It makes no sense. If Marty McFly goes forward in a time machine, then does the other McFly just materialize a few weeks later and live in the other one’s place? When Doc put Einstein in the DeLorean and sent him ahead 1 minute, was there an alt-Einstein waiting to bark at him from Doc’s trailer? Of course not. So why should there be another Marty?

Um - go into the future to 2010, today. Return from the future on Aug 23 2008, and don't do any time travelling. In 2010 there's two of you, the one who came back in 2008 and the one who went there in 2007. Not that hard.

Have you been watching him since he got recalled? He has been hitting line drives.

This is the trouble with Fantasy Baseball...

Murton has 4 hits in his last 31 AB's.
Zero in his last 12.

Neal, even if your explanation was valid, which it isn't, at the very least both time travelers would be cognizant of their having traveled thru time to create the situation. Old Marty isn't a time traveler, he's just graying, pot-bellied, loser Marty.

Why is your explanation not valid? Because by your rationale you could create infinitely many copies of your self by repeatedly traveling back and forth thru time. This is obviously ridiculous. When you travel back from the future, any future with you in it no longer exists - because you're not in it anymore.

This is the trouble with Fantasy Baseball…

Murton has 4 hits in his last 31 AB’s.
Zero in his last 12.

Since when does Fantasy Baseball keep track of line drives?

And since when do hits equate with line drives?

Just because he hasn't gotten any hits does not mean that he hasn't hit the ball hard.

Since when does Fantasy Baseball keep track of line drives.

But you do?

And since when do hits equate with line drives?

1888 give or take a couple of years.

Why is your explanation not valid? Because by your rationale you could create infinitely many copies of your self by repeatedly traveling back and forth thru time. This is obviously ridiculous. When you travel back from the future, any future with you in it no longer exists - because you’re not in it anymore.

Sorry, Horatio, I didn't realize that you don't understand that time travel doesn't exist. I'm not your psychatrist, but I need to assume a basic level of reality compreshension on your part to have conversation with you.

Why is your explanation not valid? Because by your rationale you could create infinitely many copies of your self by repeatedly traveling back and forth thru time.

Um, again, there's no problem with my explanation. Yes, you could create many copies of yourself doing so, again this gets back to your problem of not understanding the concepts. I don't know what I can do to help you out here.
