I guess Lou couldn't stomach letting Cedeno get a start.

Comments

My guess is that Cedeno was going to get a start when the lefty was supposed to be pitching, but when Houston made the switch, he wasn't comfortable with Cedeno starting against a righty.

I'm personally hoping the Cub's have more of a Pink-Floyd-at-40 performance than a Brittany-Spears-at-25 performance.

1) Why are the Cubs suddenly "aware" of how many times they've been hit by a pitch? Aren't the Cubs dead last in HBPs in the NL? 2) Ryan Dempster will be a nice No. 4 or No. 5 starter next year. His lack of a putaway pitch but otherwise decent stuff has starter written all over it. 3) I think you have to shop Marshall over the winter and at least see what his market value is. He doesn't look like he will be a reliever because of his injury issues. Say what you want about MacPhail, but Scott Downs-for-Rondell White worked out reasonably well, and Marshall has Scott Downs written all over him. (And MacPhail took hell at the time for trading Scott Downs.)

Dear Santa, I have been good I want a Cubs win today very very much. Thank you, blockhead PS. Don't worry, I only pretend to be Jewish, I believe in you, I really do

dumpster has the stuff, stamina, and bounceback to start...but he's also a guy who probably wont give you more than 5-7 innings before hitting that 100 pitch mark. so there's +/- to moving him...personally, i'd like to see it and agree that marshall might need a new home if lilly/hill are gonna be fixtures. im not saying marshall is trash, but maybe he could fetch a more reliable or similar upside righty pitcher...a RF'r...something...

what dumpster was dont interest me as much as what he is. if we wanna dig up old #s to prove points, his first 15 pitches of any game he pitches in at the point he became a closer showed by a dramatic amount that it was his worst time to get lit up. now he's an effective reliever who makes a living off his first 15 pitches...go figure. i dont see the issue except he's not exactly a guy who's gonna keep your pen rested if he's in your rotation.

Dempster does not let me get in my happy place. 2-0 Cubs, following a Floyd homer and some nice bottom of the order execution. That's more like it. (saying to self) happy place . . . happy place . . . .

Man Soriano's at bats can sure be painful to watch... From what I've seen, Rich Hill pitches inside more than anyone on the Cubs. I like that... Lou should follow through with that idea of moving Dempster in the set up role...

"His lack of a putaway pitch but otherwise decent stuff has starter written all over it." But his arm problems during his career as a starter has major suckitude written all over that possibility.

Mentioning Dempster around me is like mentioning Inspector Clouseau around Chief Inspector Dreyfus. Enough already. Not listening . . . not listening . . . . 3-0 through 5. Go Rich Hill!

yeah, still dredging up that first 15 pitches thing.... never understood how the first 15 pitches of a starter compare to a reliever. Completely different worlds....

i dont see how its completely different at all. the major difference is you'd get to use all your pitches as a wall of force instead of "saving" some of your better stuff later...but, well, dumpster does that anyway. it'd point more toward a guy that takes time to actually warm up his game to me. i dont see that 'different world' given what dumpster shows when he pitches.

If the bullpen blows this one we have the potent Cubs offense to blame yet again. What's with this scoring a few runs and then falling asleep?

Lou was playing with fire having Howry pitch after pitching 2 innings last night. We got lucky. Wuertz or he-who-shall not be named (who, after all, pitched two innings last night also, although "pitching" is a generous term for what he did in his second inning) in the 9th?

sus

when is a W not a W? when you were within an eyelash and one remarkable DP from ignominious and supremely crushing defeat?

no but the triple was Not really... that should have been a single, maybe a double. It really should have been an error on Pie, who played it REALLY poorly.

"no but the triple was" That was more like a double and an uncharged error to Pie.

We still have got to do more on offense and take the pressure off our relievers. Dempster did nothing wrong on first at bat, but pitch on triple really sucked. He just doesn't seem to have much left in the tank. That was a hell of a DP turn.

In 2003 (and even 2004) I loved this intensity every single day, with the world riding on every pitch. This year I really am not enjoying it much Either I'm getting old, or I just don't get too excited about profoundly mediocre baseball.

dumpster's having a really rough sept. fwiw... he's been his same old wild self, but he's getting hit on mistakes rather than giving up walks due to that wildness lately. gotta love how he can nearly coax a groundball, though...

7-7 against Astros with 1 to go. Yeah, mediocrity! Still wish Z was pitching tomorrow. Need wins now, not later.

Dempster's blown save vs LA had a couple of Lee misplays and a wind-blown fly ball basket HR. Last night he throws a perfect, 6-pitch 10th, gets no runs in the 11th and then gives up a run. Tonight a ball frickin' hits 1st base, Pie misplays a double into a triple -- and he get the save on a 3-6-1 DP ball that Lee juggled. Up until that last play, I thought maybe karma was punishing him for torturing little kittens as a child. Dempster's control is dicey enough without the kind of bizarre misfortune he's had lately. Poor guy needed to catch a break.

I have a new nickname for Ryan Dempster (it's pretty bad and I don't expect it to stick) Heartattack Jones But that's what I'm going with untill something better comes along. Let us not forget, miracle for Loretta and a miracle for us.

"Get back Loretta ... your mama's waitin' for ya -- wearing a-high heeled shoes -- and a low-neck sweater. Get back home, Loretta."

I am enjoying the mental image of Ron Santo screaming out anguish and blood onto his microphone, however. This has gotta be the year he says, "Life is Short, I Can't Take This Anymore."

that was ridiculous.....i was already planning on having to avoid the chicago papers tomorrow with the "bounce off first proves curse"-type headlines. dempster gave up a double and a walk which was only bc he wasn't going to let palmeiro put it in play. ho hum. simma down. he's not great but not bad. very exciting stuff......i'm planning a last minute trip to cincy (from nyc) the last weekend of the season if it's still in doubt at that point (i'm guessing it will be).....how many of you will i see there?

no matter what i for one like to bash the dumpster, but i have to give him alot of credit for the way he was of the mound immediatley to cover first.

Under discussed in the madness at the end. Hell of a pitching performance by Hill. We absolutely needed him to give 7 strong innings with our bullpen burned, and he did. Great recovery after a tough 49 pitch 1st and 2nd innings. Oh, and Soriano....get your head in the game please. Lighting struck twice in a row when his piss poor fielding lead to outs....not going to happen again.

Well God bless him, LouPa in postgame says, "You've got to think the worm has turned." In other words, he's going to whip this win into a meaningful and representative event to his team that "we can DO this," and even though this is more than I currently believe. He's earning his pay in this month, if he keeps this up.

worm has turned? How about a 2 game winning streak before we start talking about turning a new leaf. We can't get, or sustain, any type of momentum at all. Last 10 games: L W L L L W L W L W

I couldn't follow the game today but I just watched the bottom of the 9th online, and WOW. I still don't know how they had time for that DP. Kendall made a great stop (okay, possibly lucky) on ball four to Palmeiro. And how 'bout the Riot?

marmol should close, and i would have the guts to make the change — tomorrow. But would you have the guts to make another change again the day after tomorrow if Marmol blew a save? Sorry, I'm just amazed at how Relievers can go from saints to saviors in the blink of an eye. One day Dempster is an elite closer, the next day he's trash. One day Howry is horrible, the next day he would be the savior. Insert names Marmol, Wuertz, Wood, etc, and repeat. The cubs relief pitching is pretty damn good, they're just not perfect. I'm just amazed at times at how many people expect them to be perfect every single time out.

Well done, Rich Hill. Outstanding work in a critical start, and, once again, with lousy run support. But, please, learn how to bunt. OK -- Soriano, Lee and Ramirez -- time to produce, boys. A collective 0-for-12 is not what we need. At least 2 of you need to go yard tomorrow, or at least drive in multiple runs. Great job by Demp on the DP -- got there in time to set himself to receive the throw. Textbook. Oh, my. That ball hitting the bag caused some serious intestinal distress. May be a tough weekend to gain ground -- the Brewers play the Reds but don't face Bronson or Harang -- then we get 'em both early next week. Of course, we missed Oswalt and Wandy. WOW!

we're DUE to paste Harang and Bronson. They kicked our ass last time in - I was at the Harang game and he had a beauty going until he was lifted in the 7th.

from rotowerld... "Cubs acquired RHP Marcos Mateo from the Reds to complete the Buck Coats trade." *shrug*

"Sorry, I’m just amazed at how Relievers can go from saints to saviors in the blink of an eye. One day Dempster is an elite closer, the next day he’s trash" Amazing, isn't it. Don't blame us for the quick change, blame dempster: 8/10 - 8/28 10 Games, 9.1IP, 2H, 0ER, 0.00ERA Since 8/30: 8 Games, 8IP, 10H, 8ER, 9.00ERA (Gave up ER in 5 of 8 Games)

Dempster's been a little rougher than usual in September but calling that run earned today is a tough one to swallow.

fluke hits happen....but in and of itself, I don't blame Dempster one bit for that hit. However, the pitch to Lamb was awful and similiar to what's beaten him this whole month. Furthermore, even if Pie picks that up cleanly, it's still an easy double as Pie was racing away from the 2nd at full speed with the play entirely ahead of the hitter. That's still 2nd and 3rd with 0-outs with a VERY high likelylihood that run scores. Heck, in retrospect, having men on 2nd and 3rd, may have changed the approach of Dempster for the rest of the inning towards the batters and it could have been a worse result due to Dempster having an ever so slightly larger margin of error.

Dave, Have you ever played the OF against HS hitters or above? Because if you think Pie could have fielded that ball for a double, you don't know jack about playing the OF. Only his plus speed allowed him to get near the ball. The Cubs have only 4 relief pitchers since the All-Star break - Dempster, Howry, Marmol, and Eyre (check out the Cubs game notes for Saves/Blown Saves, ERA, and scoreless outings). If Dempster doesn't close, tell me who does and who gets the ball to the 'new' closer in innings 7 and 8, let alone innings 6, 7, & 8?

Amazing, isn’t it. Don’t blame us for the quick change, blame dempster: So you're going to comdemn a pitcher who was perfect in 9 IP, and then damn him for 8 poor innings. I can't imagine why I'd think people are too quick too change their positions about Cubs relievers when opinions drastically change because of one starts worth of innings pitched.

"One day Dempster is an elite closer, the next day he’s trash" I don't recall Dempster ever being called, or actually being, an "elite" closer. Anyone here who has, please step forward for your thorazine drip. Elite closer makes me think Mariano Rivera...Trevor Hoffman, K-Rod when he's on. The Eck...Goose Gossage..etc... not Ryan Dempster.

"Of course, 1 starts worth of pitching can be 9 appearance for a closer." Exactly. That's a ridiculous comment to put a closers work in terms of starter innings. Dempster has pitched 59 innings this year....9 innings is 15% of a season. For a starter, if you are going to play that game, a 9 inning complete game only represents 5% of their innings for a season. A typical 7 inning start, about 3% of the season. For a closer, 9 outings is plenty to judge if a guy has his stuff, or doesn't. In August, he had great stuff. In September, he's been lousy. I truly don't get what your point is bleeding? You don't look at a guy like Dempster who has given up runs in 5 of 8 appearances and think that this guy has lost something? Dempster had an extended hot streak, and now is in the midst of an extended cold streak. It is perfectly 100% logical to change an opinion on a closer based on streaks represinting 15% of your performance for the year. We judge starters based on stretches of 5 starts, we judge batters based on stretches of 100 plate appearances, we judge closers on streches of 9 outings.

First of all, its been a while since anyone has called Dempster elite, but it has been discussed more than once on TCR. In September, he’s been lousy. I truly don’t get what your point is bleeding? My point is that its entirely foolish to say a reliever can't do their job anymore because of a small sample size, even if it is a . Dempster has shown an ability to perform acceptably well since been named the closer. He's not perfect, and he performs especially poorly in non-save situations, but he's not LaChoke Hawkins out there. Saying he should be given the hook in favor of Marmol or Howry because of 8 innings is incredibly foolish and shortsided. It doesn't take any "courage" to use the word used earlier, to make rash decisions based on a tiny set of data.

Oh, and judging starters based on 5 starts isn't a good idea either. It leads to decisions like trading for Steve Trachsel.

Ok BCB, but anyone calling Dempster an elite closer should have their head examined.

15% of a seasons work is a "tiny sample size"? Again, I personally don't believe a change should be made. But I do believe Dempster has crap stuff this month, and is getting pounded...and I believe that a stretch covering 15% of the season, is plenty to judge that he is in a real "slump" so to speak. When Zambrano had an awful August, no one was calling for him to be removed from the rotation..but people absolutely were judging him and noting that he had lost it for that month. It's no different than Dempsters situation.

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.
