Games 4 and 5 are yet to be set as the Dbacks haven't decided on Webb for Game 4 on 3 days rest or Micah Owings. If the bats are struggling for the Dbacks they can always look for Owings for an offensive surge as well (333/349/683). While the Game 1 edge definitely goes to the Snakes and likely Cy Young runner-up Brandon Webb, Games 2 & 3 are decidedly in our favor and it's not really that close. A few other notes just from the numbers: - If you think the Cubs have trouble holding on runners, looks like the boys in blue should get their track shoes on for Games 1 & 3. - All the Dbacks pitchers look a bit walk-happy. Patience young jedi - patience! - Since losing Orlando Hudson on September 5th and his vacuum cleaner glove at second base, Webb's ERA has jumped a bit to 3.65 in the ensuing 5 starts. He had a 2.91 ERA before that point. If the good Z comes out in Game 1 and we manage a victory, I think this series goes no more than 4 games (Wow, way to go out on a limb Rob). Here are the boxes from our six games this year, the Dbacks winning 4 of 6 and both series 2 of 3. July 20th - Marquis outduels Webb for a 6-2 win at home. Earth almost vanishes out of existence. July 21st - A miccroosm of each team's season. Rich Hill pitches brilliantly but the team can't score runs for him. Dbacks win a one-run game. July 22nd - A nice outing by Sean Marshall but Petit owns us for 6 and the Dbacks go Pena, Lyon & Valverde for the 7th, 8th and 9th and the win. August 24th - Another nice outing by Sean Marshall (maybe he should pitch Game 4?) and the bullpen keeps the door closed. August 25th - Death by a lefty. Looks like Game 2 will be the rematch. August 26th - Death by Marquis. Another one-run Dback win. Game chat is open for the tiebreak game which looks like it might be over before it started. Go Rockies!

Too bad Atkins hit was not a homer, he could have killed that female Mastadon standing along the fence. I forgot that Spilborghs up to bat song is Gwen Stefani song "WHE HOO" WHE Hoo" How does he look at himself in the mirror?

Extra innings in a tiebreaker game... awesome. And good thing they put Carroll in for defense, eh? Oh wait...

I'm terrified to watch this do-or-die baseball, and its not even my team. What is wrong with me?

*I forgot that Spilborghs up to bat song is Gwen Stefani song “WHE HOO” WHE Hoo” How does he look at himself in the mirror?* Maybe he banged her before she married that washed-up rock star and it reminds him of happier times, before he was banging mastodon Rockies fans.

EPIC.

game ends with Barrett dropping the throw from Giles...how familiar.

great...the epicness of the game is challenged cuz of a nonconclusive replay of a plate touch. WAY TO SCREW IT UP UMPS.

replay looks like Holiday was blocked from tagging the plate...but ump didn't signal safe until after MB picks up the ball and tags him. what a great game.

or more like a replay of a nonconclusive plate touch. I feel like this was the Sid Bream slide again.

agree...ump blew the call. Holiday got a faceburger with his head first slide.

Crunch, When the catcher doesnt catch the ball on that solid of a throw the runner is going to get the benefit of the doubt. If Bard is the catcher I wonder if the Rox send Holliday there.

I smell "taint". Rocks ride the wave of destiny on a "hanging chad" call. ggaaaaaahhh Time for the rape shower.

Barrett and the Padres got f****. He blocked the plate perfectly and that was a tough pick on that throw which if he even picked clean Holliday beat the throw except he never touched the plate. What a shame.

Stupid TBS doesnt show a replay from McCleland's view. It is kind of hard to blame him I dont know what he saw.

what solid throw? the ball one-hopped Barrett and Holliday would have been in. Even if Barrett caught it cleanly he would have never gotten the tag down in time.

hey, im not saying the call was wrong or right...there were only 2 crappy angles shown. dunno if its a park limitation or TBS being cheap... but the outcome is this game has a * on it in too many people's minds now...bah.

and yeah, blaming the umps was probably a shortsighted call. i'll take that one back.

nothing short-sighted about it, horrible call. Why hesitate? the hand was by the foot before the tag was down, so he couldn't have been waiting to see if Barrett had the ball.

Absolutely impossible to tell if Holliday got the plate. It looked like he might have slid his hand under Barrett's foot, but you just can't see it on the replay. So where's the controversy? Unlike the Atkins HR ball, the ump had a better view than the cameras for this one.

looked pretty clear that he didn't touch the plate and if it was clear to the ump you don't wait 10 seconds to make the call.

It didn't look that clear to me but I agree the delayed call was BS. He's pretty slow in indicating balls & strikes too so maybe that's just his M.O.

the delayed call thing was probably waiting to see where the ball was and if he tagged him since it got away from him. it'll all come out to what he saw and etc...the TBS announcers dragged the ump's call through the dirt like hoffman's face. el oh el.

well except if his hand was in and touched the plate, he never tagged him so why wait to see if he had the ball? Just plain awful....

yeah, im not sure what the ump was thinking...just pondering the possibilities for the pause at all. it sucks they only had 2 angles on that play.

I don't think it's awful enough to say the game has an asterisk or anything. There is no more doubt surrounding the play at the plate than there is surrounding the Atkins 2B/HR play. And if that call was wrong they shouldn't have really been in extra innings anyway.

was the HR call clear in HD? on choppy MLB.tv it wasn't clear at all. That being said a blown call made from 200 feet away is more excusable to me than one from 5 feet.

No, I don't think either of them were clear. They both "might" have been missed calls. Or not.

Maybe McClellend was trying to be dramatic. Crunch, Thanks for posting that board. As much as I hate San Diego sports it was a roit. Hoffman blows two saves and they treat him like Dempster. Anyways if Giles plays that off the wall, he probably holds Holliday to 2nd and they stand a good chance of going to 14.

Maybe what Hoffman has done should cause us to reconsider our views of Demp? There are very few closers who can consistently get you the saves without some notable blowups, and we aren't getting Rivera or Nathan.

Hey guys. Don't post much but felt like sharing. Just got back from the Rockies-Padres game. Voice is completely gone. Emotionally and physically exhausted. Don't know what it was like on tv but that was by far the best game I've ever attended. Absolute hysteria in the stands. The Rockies are kind of my second team since I live in Denver. The whole game I was wondering what it would be like to be in Wrigley Field this time of year. If tonight was any indication the NL playoffs could be crazy. With that said, I'm glad the Padres and their pitching staff are not in the playoffs. I'm pumped!

Hey Pootie -- I'm in Denver too. In case you're interested, NLCS tickets are on sale now. It took me about 20 minutes to get in, but I was able to get decent seats to all three potential NLCS games at Coors. Should be fun if the Rockies make it. If the Cubs are there too, I'm gonna be damn glad I hooked up the tickets now!

My friends have tickets for Saturday's game but unfortunately I'm in Vegas this weekend. Did I say unfortunately?

Play at the plate didn't harm the epicness of the game. Who gives a fuck if he was safe or not, we've gotten terrible calls as well --just like everyone else-- and the Atkins homerun levels the karma of the last play. "He touched the plate and Gore lost in 2000 Started by Bad Moss on/at 1:45 AM" That, though, made me spit my milk.

woot 2 tickets for the Rockies 1st NLCS game if they make it which I believe would be on Sunday Oct. 14th. I'll probably have to hawk them but at least I have the option.

Nice Rob G. Poor Barrett. Either he is done or some team is going to get a huge bargain by throwing him a $2 million dollar bone during the off-season. Even if he make the tag, the Padres still haven't won the game. That throw from Giles, that's called a rainmaker, right?

Matt Holiday pretty much admitted he was out in his post game interview. When asked if he was safe or not he said, (parapharse) "Well, the ump said I was safe, so I was safe." Nice non-answer. Bullshit call.

I'm picturing Holliday on his cell to Pierzynski right after the game. "Quick, man, what do I say? What do I say?"

On Mike&Mike this morning they were talking about what a great job Marty Barrett did blocking the plate on the final play. Hee Hee.

Here's another slant on the game: If TCR put it to a vote - You can have Hoffman or Dempster as your closer effective today, do you think 51% of the voters would pick Dempster? Yet, who has more blown saves this year?

Greatest one-game playoff game? Certainly. The Shot Heard Round the World in 1951 was in a tiebreaker game--but then they did a mini-three game playoffs to resolve ties. So it does not count. I believe they went to one-game tiebreakers when divisional play began in the sixties. The Bucky Dent home run game between the Yankees and Red Sox (1978) is the only other one-game tiebreaker that could come close. But it was not as dramatic as this--basically, in that game the Yankees rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh to score four runs, including the Dent HR, and they then held on to beat the Red Sox. There were four lead changes last night!

Hoffman should not be closing. They should install Bell as closer. Also, the whole thing came down to Barrett making a boneheaded play. It's all his fault. In the above paragraph feel free to replace Hoffman with Dempster, Bell with Marmol and Barrett with ummm...Barrett.

Forgettting the game last night whose epicness was ruined when the homeplate umpire let loose the loudest brainfart I have ever heard. Here's how our pitching stacks up with the best that's left playing in the post season National League. Top NL Pitchers Still PLaying in the Post Season ERA Brandon Webb Cole Hamels Ted Lilly Rich Hill Carlos Zambrano Strikeouts Brandon Webb Rich Hill Carlos Zambrano Cole Hamels Ted Lilly IP Brandon Webb Carlos Zambrano Jeff Francis Ted Lilly Livan Hernandez Wins Carlos Zambrano Brandon Webb Jeff Francis Ted Lilly Cole Hamels not bad, eh?

You can have Hoffman or Dempster I'll take Heath Bell. In other news, Phil Rodgers said this morning that Colorado was the Cinderella team this year, the team that won so many games going into the postseason that they think they can't lose. Reminds me of the '03 Marlins who, if I remember correctly, also started off playing Philly.

Reminds me of the ‘03 Marlins who, if I remember correctly, also started off playing Philly. I think the Marlins played the Giants that year. If I'm not mistaken, this is Philly's first playoff experience since the Mitch Williams days.

I was checking rosters for ex-Cubs. Here is what I have for the National League. Please let me know if I missed anyone. Arizona Diamondbacks Juan Cruz Augie Ojeda Colorado Rockies LaTroy Hawkins Dan Serafini Philadelphia Phillies Jamie Moyer Jose Mesa Tom "Flash" Gordon Antonio Alfonseca Chicago Cubs Steve Traschell I will check the AL rosters next.

Little late to the party. I was at a wedding this weekend and closed on my house yesterday, so wanted to give my shout out to the Cubs for clinching since I was unable to post since before Friday's game. Woo players!!! Woo Lou!!! Woo Hendry!!! Go Cubs!!!!

My 2 cents... - Horrible call on the last play last night. Holliday was out. Great block of the plate by Barrett. - Nice to see the Mets choke. - Going to be long nights this week with the 10PM starts, but I can't complain as it is October baseball for the Northsiders!! - Can't believe the Cubs came such big favorites in the NLDS (-125). They are underdogs in the first game (+123) though up against Webb.

I think the Marlins played the Giants that year. My fact checker called in sick today. I remember the Phillies in there somewhere--did the Marlins edge them out for the playoffs on the final weekend?

Can’t believe the Cubs came such big favorites in the NLDS (-125). Cubs are often favorites, not because Vegas thinks they will win, but because they also get a lot of bets for the Cubs.

dave: "Cubs are often favorites, not because Vegas thinks they will win, but because they also get a lot of bets for the Cubs." Very true, but that usually is for preseason WS, NL pennant or division bets. But even on the road, I think the Cubs will/should be favorites over any team in NL.They are the most balanced of the team remaining.

Quick question... Does anyone know for certain if the Cubs and Rockies win their series' and play in the NLCS, who will get the 4 home games? I personally think the Cubs should as I don't feel the WC team should be the home team for any series no matter if they have a better record than the division winner. But the "2007 Post Season Fact Sheet" the Cubs sent me with all my post season tickets states the "League Championship Series home field advantage is given to the team with the highest winning percentage during the regular season." They make no mention about the possibility of the WC team having a better record and would they have home field. Just curious...Thanks!!

The only way a catcher is allowed to block access to home plate with his foot is if he possesses the ball or is about to catch the ball, and neither was the case last night. The ball had already arrived and Barrett had failed to catch it just before Holliday arrived, so Barrett continuing to block home plate with his foot was obstruction and so the runner should have been called safe for that reason. It doesn't matter that Holliday failed to touch home plate. For the umpire to call the runner safe because of obstruction, the umpire would have to be sure that the catcher had not caught the ball. And once McClelland saw that Barrett had not caught the ball, he called Holliday safe.

Very true, but that usually is for preseason WS, NL pennant or division bets. But even on the road, I think the Cubs will/should be favorites over any team in NL.They are the most balanced of the team remaining. The NL picture is definitely weird this year. Three hitters parks (four if the wind is blowing out at Wrigley), two teams with great offenses, and two teams with legitimate aces but little other starting pitching. Top of my head rankings Hitting: 1. Phils 2. Rockies 3. Cubs 4. D'backs Starters: 1. Cubs 2. D'backs (although very close in a short series) 3. Phils 4. Rockies Bullpen: 1. Cubs 2. D'backs 3. Rockies 4. Phils Definitely glad this is the lineup and the Mets and Padres missed out. I think the toughest matchup will be the Phillies. Two lefties (including one soft tosser), and Kyle (Cy) Lohse together with the best offense not located in the Bronx. I'm not sure if Howard and Utley scare me more because they are monsters or because their left-handedness might induce Will Ohman onto the roster if we play them in the NLCS.

mannytrillo — October 2, 2007 @ 8:44 am Quick question… Does anyone know for certain if the Cubs and Rockies win their series’ and play in the NLCS, who will get the 4 home games? ========================== MANNY T: If the Cubs play the Rockies in the NLCS, the Cubs get the "home field advantage" (four home games). The rule that the Wild Card team cannot get home field advantage in the LDS and LCS even if it has a better record than its opponent has not been changed.

Does anyone know for certain if the Cubs and Rockies win their series’ and play in the NLCS, who will get the 4 home games? Unless the rules have changed since '03, Cubs would have homefield. They had homefield over the Marlins even though the Fish had a better record. I will now smite you for making me remember that year.

Well said, AZP. That seems to be the consensus among the more level-headed. But I haven't heard any comments by McClelland to that effect.

Re: 63 Can the ex-Cub factor apply to the Cubs? Not that it would surprise me...just wondering...

Sorry AZ Phil, but I call bullshit. Holliday was sliding in when Barrett was attempting to catch the ball. There was no way for Barrett to be able to move out of the way after he dropped the ball because Holliday was already sliding. There was absolutely 100% no obstruction. This was a bang bang play, the Catcher has every right to do what Barrett did and it is not illegal or against the rules.

AZ Phil: "If the Cubs play the Rockies in the NLCS, the Cubs get the “home field advantage” (four home games). The rule that the Wild Card team cannot get home field advantage in the LDS and LCS even if it has a better record than its opponent has not been changed." I wonder of the Cubs know that...:)

Jacos - My bad... Jose Mesa was never a Cub. They still have 3 ex-Cubs though... not good news for them.

I appreciate the strict interpretation of the rules but I don't buy it. Name the last "obstruction" call made for blocking the plate without the ball.

jacos — October 2, 2007 @ 9:20 am He wasn’t blocking like Mike Soscia use to do with his whole body and no ball. ============================= JACOS: A catcher can block the plate without the ball (like Mike Scioscia used to do), as long as he is "in the process" of receiving the ball (and that can be interpreted quite liberally). But if a catcher blocking the plate with his foot fails to catch a throw anytime prior to the arrival of the runner (even if it's a bang-bang play), that's obstruction. The issue here was not Barrett blocking the plate with his foot, it was his failure to catch the ball, and then Holliday's arrival after that happened. If Barrett had caught the ball and then Holiday knocked the ball out of Barrett's hand or glove while missing home plate, then Barrett could have retrieved the ball and tagged Holliday out. It was Barrett's fumble PRIOR TO Holliday's arrival that makes it obstruction for Barrett to continue to block the plate with his foot. The reason you don't see obstruction called often on plays at the plate is because most catchers don't drop throws and then continue to block the plate as the ball rolls away.

If the call on Barrett was indeed obstruction, shouldnt the official score report should list it as an error on Barrett? I thought all obstructions were listed as errors, and the official box score on MLB.com right now does not list it as an error on Barrett.

nothing short-sighted about it, horrible call. Why hesitate? This is McClelland. He takes thirty seconds to call a strike down the middle of the plate.

DC Tom — October 2, 2007 @ 9:37 am If the call on Barrett was indeed obstruction, shouldnt the official score report should list it as an error on Barrett? I thought all obstructions were listed as errors, and the official box score on MLB.com right now does not list it as an error on Barrett. ====================== DC TOM: If in the opinion of the official scorer the runner who was obstructed would have advanced without the obstruction, it's not an error. Since Holliday would have been safe at home if Barrett had not obstructed the plate with his foot, there is no error, and Jamey Carroll gets the SF and RBI to which he was entitled. The most common example of an error being charged on an obstruction play is when a runner gets caught in a rundown and is obstructed by one of the fielders in the course of the rundown. In that case, an error would be charged on the fielder who commits the obstruction, because the obstruction allowed the "dead duck" runner to score or remain on base.

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.
