For tonight: Solve the Rubik's cube Lefties have had our number and Doug Davis in particularly has beat us up pretty good over the years (7-5 with a 3.39 ERA for his career). TLFC Super Computer better be right One of our favorite Cubs blogs around these parts predicts 6 IP, 2 ERs, 7Ks, 1 single. I'll take that. Spy vs Spy the Rematch! Just like the comic strip, it'll hopefully be our bullpen's turn to take the upper hand. Sobering thought of the day: The Cubs have never won a playoff series where they dropped the first game. Of course there haven't been a lot of playoff series for us to win.

Lefties have had our number and Doug Davis in particularly has beat us up pretty good over the years (7-5 with a 3.39 ERA for his career).

Aw, c'mon. Did lefties have our number that last weekend home series against the Pirates? And how many innings does that Doug Davis line represent? 100? So what?

You're bringing up the short sample size of 3 games against the Pirates then questioning the sample size of Doug Davis against the Cubs?

Well done sir!

fwiw, 85 IP and 13 GS

Fine. I'll just say categorically that the idea that the Cubs can't hit lefties is a myth and that the Doug Davis sample size, like pretty much all matchup stats I've ever seen cited, is too small to tell anything meaningful.

wow, i've never seen "their" misspelled "they're." usually its misspelled "there."

go cubs!

Well I didn't say the Cubs were going to lose, they just have to do better than they historically have done against him. Although if LIlly pitches a gem, 3-4 runs might be enough.

As for the lefties, I don't know what the records or numbers finished at against lefties, but I don't think it was very good this year, even with that 3 game sweep of the Pirates. We did lose 2 right after that to Olsen and Willis.

thanks shychild...

derosa's burried down there.

For those of you who plan road trips as far in advance as I do... Allow your mind to think of next summer before we clobber the Snakes tonight ...

Sorry if some of this is 3/44.

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi in my pants.

top 6th...1 hour til gametime...

looks like this one might start on TNT if this game doesnt find some quick outs.

Let's do our own sort of ex-Cub factor tonight. Join the chat as an ex-Cub...

I think the Indians got this one....

will the game be on TNT until the Indians game is over?

I'm shocked that Doug Davis is only 7-5 in his career against us. It seems like he's 27-2. Hopefully we get after him early tonight.

Adam, I'm sure the Cubs will be on TNT until this game ends, like they did with the start of the Yanks game.

This line up is perfect.

Well, we will see what our boys are made of. $350 million dollars in the offseason hopefully can get them a win in the postseason.

Go Cubs!!!!!!!!!

Lilly did not look good in that first inning, but got out of the jam. He missed badly on more than a few pitches. 25 pitches also.

Fuck yeah

Soto Hr!!! 2-0 Cubs

Kendall who???????

Geovany Soto has just matched Jason Kendall's 2005-2007 home run total.

Kendall sucks.

Hopefully Lilly bounces back.

At least Soriano looks good...oh brother!!!

43 pitches through 2 for Davis, would love to get deeper into their pen early.

Lilly may be sharpening up here in the second...!

(through three pitches)

Never mind.

All I have to say at this point is...

SOTO!
SOTO!
SOTO!
SOTO!
SOTO!
SOTO!

Lilly coughs up the lead....FUCk!!!!!!!!!

Okey-doke. Let's see if our boys have character. Backbone. All that.

Lilly looks really bad tonight!!

Anybody else all of a sudden finding it easy to dislike the Dbacks, their fans, their colors, the TV announcers, the jerks sitting behind the plate, and pretty much everything right now?

agree jody, backbone won't help if Lilly doesn't get it turned around and NOW

nice play out there in left center, both OFers miss teh ball and JJ throws over 2 cutoff men.

this is looking grim.
the 3 walks, the shellacking.
if this keeps up we're gonna need to sweep 3 games.
not impossible, but not to FRIGGIN feasible the way this is looking.

He called him Ron Darling hehehehe

Lilly is pitching like an scared idiot who has never been in a big game. Very disappointing, and possibly fatal.

Lilly looks lost out there. A fastball on 3-2 to Chris Young with first base open? Are you kidding?

that was a very deflating inning. i can only imagine what it's like in the dugout.

Lou should take out Lilly to save him for Game #5. Go Lou!

Manny, if the Cubs pull out this Series, you should not be allowed to root for them. Why don't you root for the White Sox?

After the Young home run, Ron Darling commented that Doug Davis' at-bat in the 2nd, where he sacrificed the runners to second and third, was a "key at-bat." Davis was able to "do something meaningful." Ron Darling is possibly the worst color announcer I have ever heard.

Soft tossing lefty equals Cubs death.

4-2. It might as well be 400-2. Stick a fork in them. The Cubs are fucked.

Nice work, Ted fucking Lilly.

(CA) Phil:
"Manny, if the Cubs pull out this Series, you should not be allowed to root for them. "

Why? Because I am critical of the team when they are playing bad? Okay...

Yeah, you're a buzzkill! Root for whoever you want I don't care.

Let's get some runs!

a) I am sick of Frank TV.

b) I am sick of Ron Darling.

the post-season begins as the regular season begins...weakly

Would definitely have pinch hit for Lilly's ass.

Call it panic...whatever. This sucks.

who's the more inept bunter - Lilly or Dick Hill?

why was Lilly batting there? WE have two long men and a HR would tie it...UGH!!

What's the rule on that baseline call, manny?

not 100% sure, but i think as long as he can reach the bag, it would be inside the baseline, and he clearly was able to do that, so he was safe.

oy vey. i'm heading downstairs to open some wine...

our season comes down to this, wether it was right or wrong

Pinella taking Zambrano out to early
Pinella not taking out Lilly soon Enough

And Lilly wasn't pinch hit for because?

So he can go back in the 4th to make things worse. Shit.

Well, Lou should have PH for Lilly last inning, now the Cubs are on the verge of getting blown out.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Ball game! Thanks for limping into the desert to lose to a bunch of scruffy no-names, you shriveled-sacked bitch-titted gimps.

the current 1-18 from Fonz, Lee and Ram at the moment is awesome. that's what $45M buys in October?

The fact is az has raised their game and we haven't. we're playing like there's a tomorrow...and a game 4 or 5..

don't know if you are aware that WGN radio is intentionally broadcasting the game in about a 20 second delay to try to match the TBS feed...I've fortunately been able to avoid stockton/darling who are incredibly awful.

An Optomist's Guide to the Cubs:

1) 5 innings left
2) Lilly out of there
3) Even if we lose, we can still sweep our way to the next series
4) Lilly out of there
5) Davis pitch count climbing
6) Lead off single by Soriano

Better hit post b4 Theriot hits into a DP

Eckstein Theriot comparison oh do I hate Darling

sick warning track power for the cubs this series

The problem with the 06 team? They didn't call up Auggie. (sigh)

I wish we still has SuperNeifi...

with the Davis pitch count getting up there, we're probably going to see another ex-cub, cub killer...Juan Cruz. I don't feel too good.

Oh well. it was fun while it lasted. at least we have the bears..oh wait...

Last inning Ron Darling said, "as is his wont".

Never thought I'd miss Tim McCarver.

there are so many candidates for biggest choker this series...marmol, fonz, lee, ramirez, lilly, piniella.

who wins that epic battle?

This series just has all the feelings of 89. Way too much suckage from the guys who are supposed to be the anchors of the team.

Fucking crapshoot playoffs

Sorry:

[CENSORED} crapshoot playoffs

I agree that the announcers suck balls. The yankees had a better announcer with BOTH Brenly and Tony Gwynn, and we get these two jack-offs.

And how many times is he going to incorrectly say that Lilly is coming back on 3 days rest for game 5? I've counted at least 4 times so far.

Right now TBS is covering the series like the Cubs are playing it.

re 72 - i agree. i haven't seen this many bad ABs from Lee and Ramirez in ...maybe ever...

Notice how the Indians have an amazing ability to get clutch hits and they also have some of the most dominant pitching in MLB in 2007...and the Indians did all of this with a $61 Million payroll...The Yankees were totally embarassed tonight.

and the Cubs with their $300 in spending on talent has not paid off yet...we are in the post-season BUT where is the clutch hitting from all the famous, high priced bats...?? Where is the reliable pitching when the team really needs it...?? Hope the team can bounce back but it doesn't look good right now. Unfortunately, big market teams with big payrolls don't always get big results...we might see a World Series this year with the Rockies going up against the Indians.

another complaint about tbs...even if they don't they have any decent commercials, can't they get more than 3 things to sponsor during the playoffs?

...I very sick of the Lofton dhl ad, dislike the doofus garmin ad, will never ever watch frank tv

juan cruz warming up...pleeze wake me up so this nightmare can end.

ojeda? fuck off.

when augie ojeda beats the snot out of you...you might as well stop.

This Augie Ojeda storyline is getting boring.

I'm thinking Augie broke Eyre's left little finger

Bleeding Blue,

In '89 the only offensive player you'd really count on who sucked was Dawson. Dunston, Walton, Ryno, Grace all had a great series. It was the hobbled Hawk whom Zim refused to move down in the order who killed them and, I believe, set a record at the time for most men left in scoring position in a five game series.

when augie ojeda beats the snot out of you…you might as well stop.
----
I didn't mean that literally Stevie Ire.

Augie Fricken Ojeda? You gotta be kiddin me.

Augie *censored* ojeda..

I hate myself and I want to die

- Chad from TCR

The Indians have a low payroll because they, unlike the Cubs, have chosen to go the crazy route of developing position players in their minor leagues. The Cubs have gone another way.

before the bunt, santo says watch the squeeze...

this is just plain bad.

pitchers who can actually bunt balls into fair territory? maybe hendry can spend 40-50MM on one of those, assuming his ass isn't fired.

well at least it got out of hand before Juan Cruz could shut us down...

did I just hear Stockton say that Dave Veres is warming up in the Cub bullpen?

...now this IS a bad nightmare

speaking of nightmares

if eyre's left hand/little finger is fractured...does that roster spot get filled with E-Man's worst nightmare?

the prospect of a rockeez/d-bax nlcs makes me want to consult a de-programmer & wash my brain of what's left of baseball...

As optimistic as I wanted to be coming into the postseason, one nagging thought kept me anchored to reality: this is the same Cubs team that got swept by the fucking bottom-feeding Marlins in a middle of a pennant race.

We're being stomped by Ojeda and a bunch of AA/AAA jagoffs. Pathetic.

"the prospect of a rockeez/d-bax nlcs makes me want to consult a de-programmer & wash my brain of what’s left of baseball..."

Not to mention what it does to TV executives at FOX. Probably the only silver lining really.

so many men left on base....WHY can't Lee, Ramirez and Soriano get more clutch hits...?? These dudes are loaded with experience and paid a fortune.

WHAT happened to Ted Lily tonight...? I think he was like 9-1 in games after the Cubs have lost - he was our stopper. Are the diamondbacks really that good...?

There will be lots of pressure on Rich Hill if he pitches this weekend and the Cubs are down 0-2....Yes, our team can comeback (look what the Red Sox did a few years ago)....Yet, the game last night should have been won....and this game seems to be running away from the Cubs....the offense has to kick it into overdrive - and sooner rather than later.

davis at 104 pitches as of the DeRosa walk

even when DeRo isn't hitting, he still works the count (thankful for very small positives at this point)

well, Juan Cruz comes in to bite us in the butt (can I say buttock mr censor...well you know, gluteus maximus?)

Wish we had 2 more Wards.

DWard, professional pinch hitter with a very solid gluteus maximus

Soriano = over-priced choke artist....at least Ward drives in runs. $136 Million for Soriano (he reminds me of A-Rod in the post-season).

Kerry Wood in the playoffs, one nice moment in a dismal series thus far.

speed gun had Wood fastballs (strikes 2, 3) at 97 and 96 on Eric Byrne

so a minumum wage kid (soto) can account
for 2 runs, while mr 136 million cnat do crap
when men are on.
lee ramirez soriano wow talk about
no clutch hitting, why should post season
be any different then reguler season.

as bad as soriano has looked -- i think his performance in September was worth every penny. i love having him on the team. I think he is pressing obviously . . . Soriano Lee and Ramirez are trying to do way too much.

But calling Soriano a choker after his september is way harsh.

wood pitched the first 1-2-3 inning (bottom 6) for the cubs today

also Lilly never gave the lineup a chance today.

dback bullpen formula in effect: Pena, Lyon, Valverde

Soriano is sorta like A-Rod -- both are very talented and helped their teams get to the play-offs....yet, both of them also have done very little to help their teams advance to the next round in the post season.

Lee and Ramirez are OVERdue for some clutch hits too.

It was nice to see Kerry Wood pitch well...I would use him for another inning (as the Cubs have a day off tomorrow).

Wood needs to put one in Ojeda's ear hole.

DP will work too

btw: what is it about Cub managers that makes it so difficult to say "I Screwed Up". In a sense it left a bad taste in my mouth that he blamed last night on the four hits and one run. In essence blaming the players.

I would think it would be psychologically more sound to say "Boy I blew it. My guys played their asses off neck and neck with a 90 win team and a cy young award winning pitcher and I jumped the gun pulling Zambrano."

First of all it is true and shows that a man can own mistakes. But moreso the effect on the players would be to inspire them to pick up their manager and also they wouldn't feel scapegoated . . . when everyone know that hitting Webb is hard and that Zambrano was pitching well. a 1-1 game is very winnable if the manager doesn't hand over momentum and keeps the best players in the game.

It was a battle of aces and Lou took ours out. Own it, be a man, inspire your players don't scapegoat them.

Can anyone tell me where I can buy a bacon cheese steak? Also, I'm interested in TIVO'ing a new a comedy show. Preferably one about a fat guy doing impressions. Any one have any suggestions?

I read that differently. If he takes the blame for pulling Z, he implicity blames Marmol, saying that he made a mistake by putting in Marmol for Z. I think he did a good job of simply saying "look we only scored 1 run as a team, you don't win many of those games, it wasn't any one person's fault"

Whether we agree with that or not, I thought that was more what he was going for.

would DeRosa swing the f-ing bat.

Sorry, Superjimmer, but Lou did what he thought was the right move and he stood by it. He didn't change his mind just because he was questioned on it.

Marmol was better than Z this season, and Z had a pretty bad track record of not losing his stuff gracefully. When he lost his stuff, he fell apart. In retrospect, its easy to say pulling Z was the wrong move, because Marmol didn't do what he had done all year. Keeping Z in for one more inning might have made a difference, it might not have.

I applaud Lou for not giving into the 20/20 hindsight mentality of the media.

But Blue, there were many people who said it while it was happening they didn't agree with the move. Not just after the fact. Just like tonight when there were many of us who said Lilly should have been PH for and not brought back out in the 4th. Almost every tough decision Lou has had to make, he went the wrong way. I am not taking anything away from Lou, he isn't losing this series for the Cubs, but he has made some bad moves, IMO.

What is losing this series is the first 4 guys in the lineup have like 3 hits int he first 2 games.

No surprises here. Cubs regular season record against NL playoff teams -- 13-15. (5-2 v. Rockies). Regular season record against teams with winning records -- 32-37.

Too many folks drank the post-season Kool-Aid.

hey blue,

i hear you, your point is well taken. If Lou thinks it was the right move. end of story. he shouldn't buckle from what he believes.

For the record though (in my opinion) it wasn't a bad move because it didn't work. and it wasn't a bad move because the media says it was. It was a bad move because I cannot find precedent for pulling a staff ace in the 6th inning of a tied 1-1 playoff game when he had only thrown 85 pitches and clearly was in command of the lineup he was facing.

When facing a delicate situation like Webb - subtle shifts in momentum are all it takes. Dback players said they were relieved to see Z leave the game. That alone in a sense proves my point.

Anyway if lou thinks he was right I suppose he should be honest and hold his ground.

Cubs lose 8-4...Down 2-0 in series. Not looking good. At this point I am just hoping they don't get swept.

Very discouraged after these two games. Hope the players show some pride and come out strong on Saturday.

Go Cubs!!

Fontenot was only 1 second late swinging at strike three in the ninth.

Does Velarde only throw one pitch? Everything was a fastball that moved a bit in to a right hander until the 1-1 pitch to Lee, which was either a hard change a breaking ball that didn't do anything.
Really suprising he has been that successful with one pitch.

both of them also have done very little to help their teams advance to the next round in the post season.

Not true... look at A-Rod's post season numbers. He has had a couple of bad series, and a couple of good series.

Ramirez was a clutch hitter during the regular season BUT he is 0 for way too many in the playoff games so far...he's so tight...just a strikeout machine right now (and I think he hit into a double play tonight)...so sad...really wish Ramirez could have at least found a way to get on base for Cliff Floyd.

now we see the Cubs go back to Chicago with their backs up against the wall -- down 0-2 and it'll be up to Rich Hill....I wonder if the run support and clutch hitting will re-appear when the Cubs get back to Wrigley Field...no margin for error in the rest of the games.

derek lee:

BAD) i think he could have drawn a BB every time up tonight and continuously swung at bad 2-0 and 2-1 pitches. I wish he woulda shown a little more patience in the 9th. bringing the tying run up is basically the same whether you draw a BB or hit a HR.

GOOD) I know for a fact that he can lead a team who's back is agains the wall, facing elimination in the playoffs. he did it against a certain chicago franchise a few years back.

One game at a time.

*I wonder if the run support and clutch hitting will re-appear when the Cubs get back to Wrigley Field…*

Hernandez throws a one-hitter--book it.

Believe.

I think Valverde throws a fastball and a splitter.

But if you can throw 95-97 on the corners like he was, all you need is a fastball.

and it was a safety squeeze for the 8th run, Upton didn't run till after the ball was bunted.

Pleae check A-Rod's overall playoff performance before bashing him.
He sucked in 2005 and 2006...absolutely!!

His playoff performance in 1997, 2000, and the AL Divisional series in 2004 were all stellar.

  • If you look at the FIP and xFIP numbers, the Hendricks vs. Ross matchup doesn't look so bad for the Cubs.

  • Yeah, Baez got Maddon wanting that D.

  • That is a fair point. Man this team has crazy depth.

  • 26-0

    Da Cubs

  • Man, with a 20-6 record, it doesn't seem right to complain about any aspect of this team. What are you expecting? A 26-0 record? I'm not saying that the Cubs are above critique, but I am saying any problems that might exist don't appear to be a major hindrance at the moment. To quote a great philosopher "numbers don't lie, check the scoreboard."

  • I also recall Joe talking about he liked the way Hendricks matches up on paper against Washington. Assuming it was Joe's doing his Jedi mind tricks thing.

  • Sergio Mitre??!! LOVE IT!

    FREE MATT CLEMENT!

  • Imagine if Lester would just pitch nine innings every start.

  • Now that's funny coming from the board martyr.

You made a comment about Lester not pitching deep enough into games, Rob and others dispute it, and then it devolves into more of you acting like you're being unfairly singled out.

    Classic Crunch.

  • "Therefore, the Cubs have not had ONE pitcher in the last five years that is a TOR starter waiting in the wings ..."

It's a little scary, especially when you look over at the Mets, the one team around the league that worries me, maybe because I have clear recollections of 1969.

Actually, the only Cub draftee since 2012 when McLeod and the new FO took over the draft who has thrown a pitch in the majors is Zack Godley. So it's not just TOR starters that we're not seeing.

  • We've got a David-Goliath type situation tonight, but you never know. In matchups like this, I always remember that Sergio Mitre v. Roy Halladay game the Cubs won at home several years ago.

  • I am going tonight, so I am not ok with that.

But, maybe Hendrix will give his patented solid 5 before Richard or Wood comes in...

    One can hope.

  • if you save the lumber from your constant trips to the cross you can build your very own safe space to view my posts.

  • @billybucks you speak the truth and it's precisely what me and others have been saying for over a year. It's an unfortunate hitch in his game, one that seems correctable, but so far has not been corrected. Also a hitch that is going over 3 seasons now and no one has been able to truly exploit in any meaningful way (except sort of the Royals in that Wild Card game although they stole plenty of bases off the other pitchers in that game and the rest of the playoff teams the rest of that run).

  • AZBOBBOP: Nothing new on Oscar de la Cruz. Still shut down with elbow issues.
