Lahey Claimed off Waivers

It's on the front of Rotoworld, but the Phillies claimed Tim Lahey today off waivers. They'll have to keep him on their 25-man roster all season to keep his rights beyond 2008 without a trade or cash exchanging hands. If he can't stick, he'll go through waivers again, but more likely end up back in the Minnesota Twins organization (if they want him). The Cubs are still owed a player for the Craig Monroe deal from the Minnesota Twins. It's certainly possible that it still might be Tim Lahey, but they'll have to wait for the Phillies to be done with him first.

hell yeah...going with the full lineup tonite... Theriot, SS Soriano, A, LF Lee, 1B Ramirez, 3B Fukudome, RF DeRosa, 2B Soto, C Pie, CF seattle going a similar route...morse in RF, bentacourt SS... lilly vs. silva

Lahey had to outpitch Hart and Ascanio to stick unless a deal with the Twins was accomplished. He didn't outpitch Hart, but I wonder why there was no deal with the Twins based on their trade with Monroe?

Thanx Rob. So if Lahey doesn't stick with the Phillies for the entire season and gets returned to the Twins, what is the net cash transaction? I'm unclear what scenerio happens now: Cubs spend $50K for the rule 5 pick and get nothing in return cause he's claimed on waivers or does the $50K rule 5 fee get shifted to the Phils? If the cost doesn't get shifted, do the Phils get the $25K refund if they return him to the Twins or does that also get shifted back to the Cubs? (seems fair if the Phils have to pickup the rule 5 draft fee)

That's an AZ Phil question...
Cubs probably spent more than $50K because they had to pay the Rays to move up in the draft or pay the Rays to select Lahey, however it went down. I'm pretty sure the Cubs get some $$ from the Phils, but I'm not sure of the amount. I would guess $25,000. I would then further assume that the Phils would get the $25K from the Twins if he makes it through waivers the next time and the Twins want to keep him.

no big deal, but would have been nice to keep him for cash/scrub in trade... cubs and RH relief seems to be something that's not a huge issue right now and even with wood/howry as unknowns for next season there's still wuertz/marmol/hart as a RH core that's locked in. so uh...btw...wood does well this season, healthy, etc...3yr/24m-3yr/30m...might be something to think about come sept/oct 08. heh...

diagnosed with thyroid cancer according to Rotoworld blurb. Yikes...

cleveland released aaron fultz... ...i hope the cubs brass stay away from this horse that needs to be put to pasture...he's just not well and if he is then his career is done.

Lahey will be another in a long line of 'almost' Rule 5 picks the Cubs have come across over the years. I am glad there is no premature hyperbole about how great Lahey MIGHT be. Just like any other bubble guy if he manages to have 2 major league seasons he will more than beat the odds.

ROB G:

That's correct.

Per MLB Rule 6, the waiver price for Rule 5 players is $25,000 (it's $20,000 for eveybody else), and so by claiming Lahey, the Cubs get $25K from the Phillies and the Phils assume the Rule 5 restrictions/privileges, meaning if they were to put him on waivers and he doesn't get claimed and the Twins take him back, the Phillies get their $25K back.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
