If the Cubs can overcome old friend Greg Maddux--perhaps making his last start ever at Wrigley Field--and the negative energy surrounding the addition of our new centerfielder, they'll take three of four from the Padres and improve their record on the homestand to a dandy 6-1, with three against the Pirates yet to go.

This, by the way, would be the first Wrigley Field series the Cubs had captured from San DIego since 1999. I'm sure the Mickey Morandini, Quilvio Veras references will be all over the broadcast.

Dempster comes off an ND against the Diamondbacks on Saturday (2 ER in 6 IP, but 118 pitches!!!).

"Game Notes" Note of the Day: Cubs have drawn 180 walks so far this season compared to 124 walks through 40 games last year. At this pace, they'll draw 758 free passes for the year, breaking the team mark, set in 1975, by a whopping 108.

Perhaps there is some revisionist history going on regarding Edmonds. When did Cubs fans hate Edmonds? Around 2004, many Cubs fans said the Cardinals played The Right Way, much different from the Unlikable Cubs. Plus, fans apply style points on wins all the time, so they can have something to bitch about. So if Edmonds wants to hot dog it during a catch (supposedly), I guess he's entitled. As long as he catches it. I believe that during the infamous Edmonds-Zambrano Game, that was also the game where Carpenter lectured Sammy behind the mound when Sammy was jogging on the way back to the dugout after making an out. I can't remember a single Cub fan that was outraged by that. On my list of hated Cardinals, Edmonds is somewhere in between Tom Nieto and Ralph Citarella. In other words, meh.

I agree with Mitterwald. I don't recall the Edmonds hate. Zambrano had that one game where he hit Edmonds twice, but that's the only adversity surrounding Edmonds that I recall. In fact, I always liked Edmonds hard-nosed play in CF and the fact that he was a big part of some very good Cardinal teams. I hope he can provide a spark and help instill a winning attitude on the Cubs.

is if you change a few variables, he could have had a great game. I get you dont like the guy and I really dont care for him myself, but it was the right baseball move to pick him up. We are paying him 284 K if he sucks and Pie makes his adjustments at AAA, you cut him and bring Pie back. To nitpick his performance after one game that we won pretty easily is kind of petty in my view.

Nobody's seen Phil's Hate-America "movie" either (even though he released it two months ago, but if you've got a ticket (a plane ticket that is) here's where it's showing today. Lascaux Micro-Theater Buckhannon, WV The Belcourt Nashville, TN Here's Yahoo Movie's description: "Follows one wounded soldier’s attempt to readjust to life in the U.S. as a handicapped veteran, while painting an incriminating portrait of Democratic politicians and the war in Iraq." Sounds like a bash Hillary movie.

Well, this is going nowhere, given the fact that you think it's a hate America movie. But it's listed in the Chicago Reader, so it's obviously playing somewhere in Chicago. It's finished, then, unlike what you said before. The fact that you think it's a bash Hillary movie (and a hate America movie, good combo) is pretty laughable. Having read an interview with Donahue, the film is incriminating of Congress for going along with Bush's war. (Hence that description.) And now I'm done.

are we really having a discussion about the merit of who gets to sing the 7th? ...along with a political discussion. check it out... its the 7th Inning Whore-Out...big deal...you're gonna get something "sold" to you 1/2 the time. music, film, whatever. btw...the inspiration for the film you're ranting about...rant rant rant... ...the reason eddie vedder is in the film is...wait for it...WAIT FOR IT... they met at discussed it at a CUBS FANTASY CAMP. yeah. get over it. some volleyball player, drug addict rock star, and washed up actor will sing to you soon enough. 1/2 the people they have up there singing have no business up there.

ditka!!! haha... i've just learned to live with the "mute inning"...its not the singing in the 7th that bothers me as much as the interview afterwards. some are just painful. and since most are there for a reason they got to plug their movie/book/etc. it's been silly for years even with the bright spots (mongo getting thrown out by the ump #1).

i'll admit to not being a fan of this dempster SP thing. I'm still waiting for him to hit a wall endurance wise. That said, major props for a really well pitched game. 8 innings 103 pitches. is that the best stat line of the year for a SP for the cubs? Keep up the good work and I'll eat my feelings later in the year. Very nice to see our bullpen get a break.

Cubs win, Cards & Brewers lose, Astros down 6-0. It's all good. Izzy looks like a basket case -- gave up 4 runs today, including his own throwing error. Beware the Pirates -- only a game under .500. Go get 'em, Sean.

Izzy, who asked out of the closer role because he couldn't handle it (!), came on to start the 8th with the Cards up 5-4.. Four batters later, it was 8-5, Pirates. If continues to be a disaster, it's a major hit to the Cards. How's that for searing insight? It may all go horribly wrong from here, but -- well done, Ryan Dempster! A remarkable start to the year.

From the Muskrat: "A career .286 hitter, he was asked how much he had left in the tank. 'I've got a lot left," he said. 'I feel my body's in as good shape as it's been in six, seven years. I just have to get my swing back and get going.' " Jim Edmonds

I was at Wrigley today. A couple of observations: (1) It was cold and windy, which made me sad. (2) Not sure if this came across on TV/radio, but Edmonds was lightly booed in a sort of joking, good-spirited manner as he was announced for his first at bat. After he grounded into the DP he was booed again, this time not so jokingly. And after he struck out he was booed for real, with lots of shouted jeers and scorn. It was a CoreyPattersonesque boo. This is not going to be pretty if he doesn't produce. (3) I had never noticed Dempster's bizarre double flip-flutter that he does with his glove during his windup. What is up with that? (4) It's May 15 and the Cubs have the 2nd best record in MLB. That is all.

(3) I had never noticed Dempster's bizarre double flip-flutter that he does with his glove during his windup. What is up with that? =========== I noticed it for the first time in his last start over the weekend against the Dbacks. Haven't really looked for it on TV. It's interesting and it must be at least a little distracting to some of the hitters. I'm not sure if he's used it all year but I like it. It's a throwback and seems simple enough that if useful it might catch on although I don't know of any other pitcher who uses it. I'm sure someone will have a historical comp though.

He has used it all year. He needs it because he really has to dig into his glove to try to get his splitfinger grip. You really want to push the ball into the webbing of your glove to try to get the ball as deep in between your fingers as you can. The more you're able to choke that ball back towards your palm, the greater the downward movement. If he performs that same motion on every pitch, it's hard to tell when he's doing it in order try to get his splitty grip or when he's just doing it for show and he's going to throw you 96 on the inside corner. It could certainly work a timing mechanism of some sort, as well. You have to try to keep good tempo and pace yourself when you're starting as opposed to throwing 15-20 max effort pitches out of the pen. Although, I think it's certainly more the former than the latter.

I think the glove action is the secret to Dempster's success. It must distract the hitters/ work as a timing mechanism well enough for him to have been able to step it up a notch. I mean he's always had pretty decent stuff obviously its just the question can he return to the starting rotation for the first time in 6 years. So far he has more than exceeded expectations, I just hope he can keep it up, at least until if/when Rich Hill can get back to his 18 win self.

Padres catcher Michael Barrett, on the 15-day DL with a sprained ligament in his right elbow, will probably start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Portland next week, manager Bud Black said. Damn... I might actually have to go downtown and catch a Beavers game just to blame this guy one last time.

I frankly don't give a shit about Phil Donahue, I actually thought he was dead. But why in the hell are they bringing in Tony Romo and Steve Smith to throw out the first pitches? Unless they are in town to take a physical for the Bears, they have no business being on the field, and I will boo them as such. To bring in a WR who torched the Bears in a playoff game(12-218 2 TD) to throw out the first pitch is an insult to the fan base, and makes NO sense. He is from LA, went to college at Utah, and plays in Carolina...what is the connection?

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
