Some juggling of the 2, 4, and 5 spots in the Cubs lineup today, and Theriot sits for another game.  Ramirez plays for Uribe, otherwise the same lineup for the Sox.  Today also marks the half-way point in the Cubs' season, with a win putting the Cubs exactly on pace for 100.  Cubs beat Vazquez pretty easily last time; this is Gallagher's first time facing the Sox.

AZ PHIL UPDATE: Prior to the game, the Cubs placed LHP Scott Eyre on the 15-day DL (groin), and recalled RHP Jose Ascanio from AAA Iowa.

Ascanio just recently returned to the Iowa Cubs from Venezuela, after missing about ten days (Bereavement Leave and then visa problems) while attending his brother's funeral.

Although Ascanio is one of the Cubs top pitching prospects, and while he does have MLB experience, the Cubs probably would have preferred to bring up a pitcher who can throw more than one inning (Ascanio is Iowa's closer), but Kevin Hart (concussion) and Randy Wells (leg) are injured, and MLB veterans Mike Burns and Hector Carrasco threw a lot of pitches the last couple of days. (The Cubs could transfer RHP Chad Fox to the 60-day DL if they need to open a slot on the 40-man roster for Wells, Burns, or Carrasco at some point down the line).

Get out the Questec.

#2 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

What's up with Theriot?

I swear, Soto hits into more hard-luck outs than anyone I have seen.

#4 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Theriot may just be getting an extended rest. Lou's talked about how he wants to keep him fresher this season, so that he doesn't fade toward the end of the year as he did in '07.

#14 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Theriot has a swollen hand and was supposedly available to pinch hit today.

#3 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Damn, Ozzie... you must be hoping this doesn't go to extras. Already burnt through 4 pitchers now?

#5 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

That Thornton guy's pretty good.

#6 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Carlos Marmol... I'd like you to meet my friend, Law of Averages.

#11 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Two pitches, two outs. Is this 2006 again?

#12 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

I fully expect the Cubs to get swept tomorrow in Comiskullar.

These teams are separated by a game or two in the history of this series, so its about right.

The entire team is in a funk, and undergoing myriad injuries, which as we all see, puts us at a major talent disadvantage on the roster.

We still are in first place, but with a couple more sweeps in short order will allow both the Cardinals and Brew to catch us.

Fuck You LaRussa!

#13 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Holy fuck. The ninth inning vs Jenks was a fucking nightmare. This cold streak is making us feel like shit.

#15 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Funny how a couple games can change opinions. Yes, we're still a good team, but that doesn't mean we don't have our share of problems.

#16 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

We can only hope that Sean Marshall has the game of his life tomorrow so we can salvage a game. I'm not overly optimistic but stranger things have happened. Aram not getting the ball up for a sac fly was horrible but that would have only tied the game, I wouldn't have been really confident we would win the game but it would have obviously better than not scoring there.

Quentin's HR was kind of a fluke. Half swing opposite field job. Crede's play on Soto was probably the biggest of the game.

So much for everyone who wanted to move Lee down in the lineup? See he's still good :)

#17 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

A-Ram has sucked since he turned 30. When will Vitters be ready? (I kid.)

Somebody check Alexi Ramirez's bat -- he weighs 58 pounds, and take s alow and away slider out to LF? Please.

Pretty gutsy performance by Gallagher -- the wind hurt him a couple of times.

#18 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

I'm not worried about our offense.
Our starting pitching went to shit this week. That's going to be the key.
The injuries are catching up with us. We've lost 7 of 11, but still have at least a 3.5 game lead, which is probably what it was before the funk began. We'll snap out of it, as long as the starting pitching keeps us in ball games.

#19 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Bah...this losing is no good.

#20 kevin youkilis...

your team is leading by 3...you have a 2 for 3 day going...you have a bad AB and follow it up by going back to the dugout and throwing bats/helmets...again...

kevin youkilis is quickly trying to lay his claim to the "most selfish and self-centered" baseball player ever award.

how many times do your own teammates have to call you out...or take a swing at you...before that chills out?

"motivated" is one thing..."hyped" is one thing...but this level of personal greed goes beyond what anyone could ever label tony gwynn with. at least gwynn didn't act like a privileged 5 year old when his days didn't go swell.

#21 Re: kevin youkilis...

denny mclain is my personal award winner, btw. all he cares about is himself.

guy makes mike marshall look modest, saintly, and reserved. imo.

#27 Re: kevin youkilis...

It's cool though, dude. He gets on base at like .700 or something. He's a sabermetrician's wet dream. Couldn't possibly do anything wrong.

#22 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

this day in baseball really sucked.

#24 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Cubs are going to have their hands full trying just to get in the playoffs much less win the division.
But all did not suck today.

Kevin Hart got a start and pitched a perfect three innings with five K's.

#23 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Cancel all September plans -- the last 3 weeks of the season should be great fun -- 6 games each against the Cards and the Brewers, with a 7-game "tell me what happens, I can't bear to watch" season-ending 7-game trip to NY and MIL. Yikes.

FOX got their money's worth today. Great game, lousy result.

One of Lilly, Marquis or Gallagher need to be consistently good in the 2nd half of the season. Better health would be nice, too.

#30 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

This game may have been a career-defining type game for a kid like Gallagher. Lou stuck with him long after I would have expected him too, and the kid showed a lot of grit hanging in there the whole time after starting off not so good. Smart managing by Lou, and it paid off for this game at least. Showing that kind of confidence, despite the early lambasting, should help Gallagher in the future.

#25 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

gallagher got better after lous motivational speech,
hopefully lou gives marshall that same speech but
before the bottom of the first, this game is marshalls
chance to uphis value or he can get a ticket to iowa.

#26 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Jared Weaver is throwing a no-no and still losing 1-0 after 6. He had a fielding error and then the catcher had a throwing error on a steal by Kemp. Can you still be credited with a no-hitter if you only throw 8 IP (game at Chavez Ravine)? I think the rule is you have to throw 9, because a Pirates pitcher went 12 1/3 with one and didnt get credit.

(Update): Vin Scully is better than Google. Yes you can legally have a 8 IP No-no. Weaver is currently out of the game after 6.

#28 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Kurkjian said that they changed the rule. Have to pitch 9.

#29 Re: Game 81 Thread/ Cubs @ White Sox (2 of 3)

Then the team throwing the no-hitter should have the option of to play the bottom of 9th then. Its kind of dumb to punish a pitching staff for a fielder's error. This case its a little differnt since the 1st error was made by Weaver.
