In roster moves, Reed Johnson was activated today with Eric Patterson getting sent down. Matt Murton thanks you Eric Patterson for your defensive ineptitude. Proud papa Aramis Ramirez is back in the lineup as well.
As for the game, the Cubs will try to derail Tim Lincecum's bid to start the All-Star game, while Sean Gallagher tries to stay in the starting rotation with Carlos Zambrano due back tomorrow. A look at their photos on cubs.com makes me think I'm looking at the Baby Looney Tunes version of what should be the actual pitching matchup.
Go Cubs! (obligatory text to get the image to not overlap everything)

#1 The Brew Crew blows a 5-0 lead in the 9th
thanks to their awful bullpen. It is nice to know were not going to lose a game to them today, because they get to feast on the underbelly of a bad Pittsburgh staff why we are dealing with the Cards.
#2 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
D-Backs score 6 in the 9th to beat the Brewers 6-5 - Torres takes the loss.
#8 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
This gets the scrappy award for the week. That was some gritty baseball played by the D-Backs. Congrats to them. Of course it doesn't hurt anything that it was against the Brewers. I blame Mike Maddux.

#3 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
I stopped looking at the Brewers score in the 8th. oops.
They need to go away. If this is a two team race I can deal, especially when the loser seems destined for the wildcard. A 3 team race mucks everything up.
#10 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Its crazy that, entering play today, the three best records in the majors were in the central. Who knew?
And I have to say that I my man-crush on DeRosa is exploding as of late. Love the way he plays the game, hits the ball, plays all over the field. Can the guy pitch?
#15 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
the three best records in the majors were in the central.
Huh?
Rays, White Sox, Angels, and Red Sox all have better records than the Cardinals or the Brewers. And the Ray have a better record than the Cubs.
Maybe you meant in the National League? Because the Cubs, Cards, and Brewers have the top 3 records in the NL, though the Brewers are tied with the Phillies.

it's amazing how much better this lineup looks (By name and reuptation) than the last 3 days.
#5 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
for the record, this lineup sucks.
#6 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Well, this went to shit quickly...
#7 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
A half-inning of Gallagher throwing BP and dashes of Cubbery add up to a steep hill to climb against the SI cover boy.
#9 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
the brewer bullpen explosion reminds me of the game last year that Dempster/Eyre imploded against the Mets (blowing a 5-1 lead). Wasn't a blown save but it might have been the single most relevant reason Lou wanted to move Dempster out of the closing role.

WTF is wrong with Marmol?
__________________________All right, all right, all right....
#12 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
My god, Marmol just looked lost out there - that pitch was absolutely crushed, a belt - high meatball serving. Something's not right with his head, his stuff looked fine at the beginning.
#36 Re: My god, Marmol just looked lost out there
I think he may be done.
#38 Re: My god, Marmol just looked lost out there
Marmol 'done' why would you think that? Maybe he's going to be ineffective for a while, but like career over done? The kid is only 25 years old.
#39 Re: My god, Marmol just looked lost out there
He's painful to watch lately. No command. Lost out there
.
I'm worried.
last ten appearances, 7.2 innings pitched
10 earned runs on only five hits
8 walks
3 hit batters
3 home runs
2 yanks after getting nobody out
#55 Re: My god, Marmol just looked lost out there
CUBS IN BRIEF: Lou worried (too) by Marmol slump
July 4, 2008
BY GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- A few days ago, Lou Piniella said he wasn't worried about setup man Carlos Marmol's struggles. But Marmol's deepening slump has the Cubs' manager changing his tone and making some bullpen changes.
#13 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Perhaps Marmol should join Rich Hill in AZ.
This is ridiculous -- can't ever remember a guy going from lights out to a total disaster so fast.
So, the bullpen is now Howry and Wood? Yikes.
#14 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
LET'S GO METS!!
#16 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
- Bummer for Gallagher -- only gave up 4 hits, but they were all in the same inning.
- Why replace Ascanio with Marmol? Odd move.
- Is the plan to have Soto catch every game for the rest of the year?
#17 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
- Why replace Ascanio with Marmol? Odd move.
Maybe a bigger is why take Gallagher out after just 74 pitches?
As for Marmol... he has developed a rep for putting out fires, so that situation is exactly what Marmol is in the bullpen for.

If this were pre-Tampa meltdown, I agree. Since then, not so much. This makes HRs in 3 straight outings.
Maybe Marmol can be the next Ankiel.
#23 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Sure... but I think that, right or wrong, Lou still sees Marmol as the man to put out fires.

#22 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Marmol should not have been out there. It makes no sense to put in a guy who is struggling the way Marmol is into a a guy on 1st and 3rd no out and down by a run in the 7th sitaution.
#25 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
I don't necessarily disagree... I was just answering the question about why he was in there.
I think Lou still trusts him.

Regarding Gallagher's pitch count:
"Piniella said he took Sean Gallagher out after five innings Thursday so he could be used in the bullpen, though he didn't say Gallagher would replace Marmol as a set-up man."

#33 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
That makes no sense. I doubt after throwing 74 pitches his arm could be rested enough to pitch in the STL series. The next game after the cardinals series is on Tuesday which would be the normal 4-days rest that a SP usually gets for Gallagher.
#42 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
The earliest he could be in the pen is Sunday, which would be his throw day.
I guess he could make like a 10 pitch appearance on Saturday, but I don't see why somebody like him would be needed in such a situation.
#18 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Mets up 9-0 -- LaRussa leaving Boggs in to take the beating. One way to save your bullpen, I guess.
Update on Superman -- Jay Bruce down to .286 (although he did go yard twice yesterday).
#20 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
For the first time all season I'm starting to wonder a little. We really don't have any kind of a bullpen without Marmol at his best. I had already considered him 'cured' in the Baltimore series but these are 3 psychologically bad outings in a row.
If we can just take one in St. Louis, it won't be a disaster and we'd still be in first, with 6 home games with the Reds and Giants coming up.
#24 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Somebody take Cain and Lincecum out to Rush Street when the Giants come to town.
Hey, it worked for Pie and The Farns.
#21 Watch Out for the Brewers
Good thing the Brewers blew today's game.
The have played 9 more road games than home, and tomorrow start a 10-game homestand against the Pirates, Rockies and Reds.
Uh-oh.
#26 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Gallagher pitched pretty well... again.
Even in his bad inning, he didn't get hit that hard other than Lewis' triple.
Oh... and ESPN is reporting that the Indians are scouting the Brewers AA team in connection to a possibly Sabathia trade...

#28 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
The Brewers and the Rays are the teams that actually have alot to give for Sabathia. If Hendry was somehow able to pull that off it would be complete thievery. Sure the Brewers upgrade Sabathia over McClung, but they still have the same bullpen issues that they had last year, I'd go more after Fuentes or other relievers than Sabathia.
#29 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Sabathia and Prince on the same team?
The pre-game meal would be a sight to behold.
#31 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Well I heard they are going to trade for Alexi Ramirez and David Eckstein to save some some food for Prince and CC.
#27 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Mets now up 11-0 --- and Boggs is still pitching.
What did this kid do to piss off LaRussa?
#30 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Its Larussa's mo to get as many IP out of his SP in this type of situation. Marquis had to do it a couple of times in 06 and I agree with the logic behind it. Why burn up your pen in a game you know you lost when your facing your big struggling 1st place rival this weekend and can with a sweep take over 1st place.
#34 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
lou shortened gallagher because he over extended his pitch
count last start
#35 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Sabathia for LaPorta?
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8311012/Brewers...
#44 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
If Melvin's willing to offer LaPorta plus Alcides Escobar, that might be a done deal. Dunno if he'd do that, though.
If that ends up being Melvin's offer, I don't know if the Cubs can match that with 7 or 8 players.
#46 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
A quick side note... Brewers beat writer Tom Haudricourt has a new post up saying the Brewers would never offer both.
"By the way, I have it on good authority the Brewers would never send LaPorta AND shortstop Alcides Escobar to the Indians for Sabathia."
http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/07/...
#52 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
You can argue the stupidity of the trade either way. I think the Brewers should be apprehensive to trade LaPorta considering they're almost certain to lose Scott Boras client P.Fielder in 2 years. Although I suppose they could groom Mat Gamel as a 1B since he's Ryan Braun redux defensively at 3B. Then from the other side you can argue it's one giant push for a title and with them in all likelyhood losing Sheets and Sabathia and getting 5 Supplemental picks in the '09 draft. Or possibly 6 if Gagne can turn his season around so they could reload rather quickly. Either way, and even with Sabathia the Brewers free swinging offense can either light it up or easily go 2007 Cubs vs Dbacks non-existent so even with Sabathia I don't see them as a lock to usurp the Cubs even if Hendry does nothing at the deadline. However, it could lead to Hendry overpaying for Burnett or Harden. If Sabathia comes to the Brewers, I see Burnett in Cubbie blue. Reportedly JP is itching for a ML ready SS and I think we have one of those to spare.
#37 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
I was at the game today and they just seemed off. From Soto dropping a routine pop fly in the infield to Edmonds taking a horrible path to Lewis' triple to Marmol continuing to look lost, the Cubs just seemed as if they had already departed to St. Louis. Gallagher looked great, however. The inning he struggled was not as bad as it looked. DLee could have easily stabbed Rowand's hard hit liner and the only other hard hit ball was Freddie Lewis' triple. Two hard hit balls (and one that could have been an out) is not deserving of four runs.
Why Lou took Gallagher out before the 6th, when the pitchers spot was due up first in the 7th for the Cubs is a mystery to me. How the game would have been different if Gallagher would have shut them down in the 6th and then Wuertz in the 7th (as he did in the 6th).
Hopefully St. Louis is better.
#40 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
So, the Cubs have won 3 of their last 7?
Formerly reliable players stumbling?
Rivals looking more tenacious? Looking to improve their rosters?
Time to start dreaming of next year?
I hate Chicken-Littling, but it's in my blood. I cannot deny who I am.

#43 Braves option Francouer...
Jeffy was hitting 234/287/374 this year. He's headed to the AA Mississippi Braves until at least the All-Star Break.
#45 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
OK, say the Brewcrew gets CC - I don't think that shifts the balance of power definitely, and their BP still sucks (much worse tha ours, even at this moment). I still like our chances, and the season's not even half over. Many things can transpire over the next few months, let's try to keep it all in perspective.
#47 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Peoria has won ten in a row.
Jay Jackson started Thursday, pitched well.
Iowa has won 8 of last 9. McGehee with 62 RBI.

Just two Iowa Cubs picked.

"Peoria has won ten in a row."
Man, our farm system sucks. After all, it's only about W/L records, no?
#50 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
Marmol tipping his pitches?
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/10397...
Funny how something like that travels around both leagues but Rothschild doesn't catch on. (Not a big fan of his.)
__________________________Tired of OBP? Join the club!
#54 Re: (Not a big fan of his.)
Me neither and I'll tell you why. Len & Bob dropped this anecdote about Ryan Dempster the other day. Dempster said he started listening to everything Greg Maddux told him after Maddog showed him how to analyze and learn things from watching video. Dempster said he had no idea what he was looking at before then. It was just tv.
Now isn't that what you'd expect your pitching coach, or someone else in the system to be teaching to your pitching staff?
#56 Re: (Not a big fan of his.)
Greg Maddux for pitching coach.

funny how the article mentions neither.
it mentions lou wondered aloud if he was tipping.
it definately doesnt mention if he is tipping...and it sure as hell doesn't mention others knowing...much less 2 leagues.
where did this crap come from?
#60 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)
That crap came from 100 years of paranoid worry based on misinformation.

Reds SP Adam Harang will miss his saturday start because of forearm soreness. I wonder if he'll be ready for his next start which should be Thursday vs the Cubs at Wrigley.

#53 Re: Joe Borowski again on the scrap heap
I don't get it. Joe Borowski who last pitched for the Cubs in early 2005 is relevant today, but the Nolasco, Pinto & Mitre trade is not.
yeesh!
#59 Re: Joe Borowski again on the scrap heap
dont think anyone cares about pinto and mitre...esp. when mitre was being traded in a position where he couldnt be sent down without being exposed to waivers.
its 3 years later and nolasco, the gem of the trade, is finally paying off for them.
hendry got his 200 hit, in scoring position 100-ish times a year, leadoff speedster...florida got a nice pitching package.
think everyone would like to have nolasco back, though.
#57 Piniella said he plans to have Zambrano on a pitch count of 85
http://www.southtownstar.com/sports/1039754,070408...
Could be problematic for Z to get a win with that low a pitch count.
