In roster moves, Reed Johnson was activated today with Eric Patterson getting sent down. Matt Murton thanks you Eric Patterson for your defensive ineptitude. Proud papa Aramis Ramirez is back in the lineup as well.

As for the game, the Cubs will try to derail Tim Lincecum's bid to start the All-Star game, while Sean Gallagher tries to stay in the starting rotation with Carlos Zambrano due back tomorrow. A look at their photos on cubs.com makes me think I'm looking at the Baby Looney Tunes version of what should be the actual pitching matchup.

#1 The Brew Crew blows a 5-0 lead in the 9th

thanks to their awful bullpen. It is nice to know were not going to lose a game to them today, because they get to feast on the underbelly of a bad Pittsburgh staff why we are dealing with the Cards.

#2 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

D-Backs score 6 in the 9th to beat the Brewers 6-5 - Torres takes the loss.

#8 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

This gets the scrappy award for the week. That was some gritty baseball played by the D-Backs. Congrats to them. Of course it doesn't hurt anything that it was against the Brewers. I blame Mike Maddux.

#3 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

I stopped looking at the Brewers score in the 8th. oops.
They need to go away. If this is a two team race I can deal, especially when the loser seems destined for the wildcard. A 3 team race mucks everything up.

#10 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

Its crazy that, entering play today, the three best records in the majors were in the central. Who knew?

And I have to say that I my man-crush on DeRosa is exploding as of late. Love the way he plays the game, hits the ball, plays all over the field. Can the guy pitch?

#15 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

the three best records in the majors were in the central.

Huh?

Rays, White Sox, Angels, and Red Sox all have better records than the Cardinals or the Brewers. And the Ray have a better record than the Cubs.

Maybe you meant in the National League? Because the Cubs, Cards, and Brewers have the top 3 records in the NL, though the Brewers are tied with the Phillies.

#4 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

it's amazing how much better this lineup looks (By name and reuptation) than the last 3 days.

#5 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

for the record, this lineup sucks.

#6 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

Well, this went to shit quickly...

#7 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

A half-inning of Gallagher throwing BP and dashes of Cubbery add up to a steep hill to climb against the SI cover boy.

#9 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

the brewer bullpen explosion reminds me of the game last year that Dempster/Eyre imploded against the Mets (blowing a 5-1 lead). Wasn't a blown save but it might have been the single most relevant reason Lou wanted to move Dempster out of the closing role.

WTF is wrong with Marmol?

#12 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

My god, Marmol just looked lost out there - that pitch was absolutely crushed, a belt - high meatball serving. Something's not right with his head, his stuff looked fine at the beginning.

#36 Re: My god, Marmol just looked lost out there

I think he may be done.

#38 Re: My god, Marmol just looked lost out there

Marmol 'done' why would you think that? Maybe he's going to be ineffective for a while, but like career over done? The kid is only 25 years old.

#39 Re: My god, Marmol just looked lost out there

He's painful to watch lately. No command. Lost out there
.
I'm worried.

last ten appearances, 7.2 innings pitched

10 earned runs on only five hits
8 walks
3 hit batters
3 home runs
2 yanks after getting nobody out

CUBS IN BRIEF: Lou worried (too) by Marmol slump

July 4, 2008

BY GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- A few days ago, Lou Piniella said he wasn't worried about setup man Carlos Marmol's struggles. But Marmol's deepening slump has the Cubs' manager changing his tone and making some bullpen changes.

#13 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

Perhaps Marmol should join Rich Hill in AZ.

This is ridiculous -- can't ever remember a guy going from lights out to a total disaster so fast.

So, the bullpen is now Howry and Wood? Yikes.

#14 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

LET'S GO METS!!

#16 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

- Bummer for Gallagher -- only gave up 4 hits, but they were all in the same inning.

- Why replace Ascanio with Marmol? Odd move.

- Is the plan to have Soto catch every game for the rest of the year?

#17 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

- Why replace Ascanio with Marmol? Odd move.

Maybe a bigger is why take Gallagher out after just 74 pitches?

As for Marmol... he has developed a rep for putting out fires, so that situation is exactly what Marmol is in the bullpen for.

#19 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

If this were pre-Tampa meltdown, I agree. Since then, not so much. This makes HRs in 3 straight outings.

Maybe Marmol can be the next Ankiel.

#23 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

Sure... but I think that, right or wrong, Lou still sees Marmol as the man to put out fires.

#22 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

Marmol should not have been out there. It makes no sense to put in a guy who is struggling the way Marmol is into a a guy on 1st and 3rd no out and down by a run in the 7th sitaution.

#25 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

I don't necessarily disagree... I was just answering the question about why he was in there.

I think Lou still trusts him.

#32 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

Regarding Gallagher's pitch count:

"Piniella said he took Sean Gallagher out after five innings Thursday so he could be used in the bullpen, though he didn't say Gallagher would replace Marmol as a set-up man."

#33 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

That makes no sense. I doubt after throwing 74 pitches his arm could be rested enough to pitch in the STL series. The next game after the cardinals series is on Tuesday which would be the normal 4-days rest that a SP usually gets for Gallagher.

#42 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

The earliest he could be in the pen is Sunday, which would be his throw day.

I guess he could make like a 10 pitch appearance on Saturday, but I don't see why somebody like him would be needed in such a situation.

#18 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

Mets up 9-0 -- LaRussa leaving Boggs in to take the beating. One way to save your bullpen, I guess.

Update on Superman -- Jay Bruce down to .286 (although he did go yard twice yesterday).

#20 Re: Game 86 Thread / Cubs @ Giants (4 of 4)

For the first time all season I'm starting to wonder a little. We really don't have any kind of a bullpen without Marmol at his best. I had already considered him 'cured' in the Baltimore series but these are 3 psychologically bad outings in a row.

If we can just take one in St. Louis, it won't be a disaster and we'd still be in first, with 6 home games with the Reds and Giants coming up.
