TCR: No Good Will Come of This

Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

(Yeah, that headline really happened)

The Sun-Times is reporting that Jim Hendry has been working the phones the last month with Billy Beane and the A's to try and pry Rich Harden from them. Of course, the A's are just four games back in the wild card and six back in the AL West and have one of the better run differentials in the league. So being a seller isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion, and don't be surprised if this rumor lasts until July 31st.

No names were mentioned, but you'd have to imagine that Beane would like somthing similar to the six for two swap he pulled for Dan Haren.

The article also states the Cubs are looking for a lefty for the bullpen with Eyre spending more time on the disabled list than the roster to this point and Neal Cotts being Neal Cotts.

Damn... I would love to see Harden on this team. I worry about the injuries, but the guy is one of the best in the game.

Of course... he is already coming close to his allotted annual innings, so we shall see.

I see the Cubs going for Marte on Pirates.

How long would Cubs have control of Harden's contract?

I see Hendry wanting to trade for Harden so they can hold onto him so they won't have to pay for Dempster this off season.

Thru 2009.

Rich Harden? Just say NO. Didn't the Wood-Prior years teach us anything?

#10 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

of course it's a huge injury risk, but at least you have him for 1+ years and he's definitely the most talented pitcher that might be available.

But good chance it would cost 2 of Hill, Gallagher and  Marhsall plus some extra parts in the Epat, Murton, Donaldson, Veal type players.

#12 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

Why do the Cubs keep these guys? To get to the world series some day, right? Pull the trigger, make it happen.

There are only a few I'd like to definitely see the Cubs hang on to: Veal, Samardjiza, Gallagher, and Pie; But you gotta give up something to get something. Murton? Please, take him so I can stop hearing about how Murton "isn't getting a fair shake" ugh.

If the Brewers CC deal happens you have to start wondering if a rotation upgrade is just a nice idea or necessity.

#13 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

the Brewers deal happened, there was a press conference and everything.

#15 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

On a side note, since Murton was mentioned, I'm sure happy we didn't trade Murton and a pitching prospect (and the Rangers insisted on) for Marlon Byrd this off season. Byrd is .238, .326, .371 this year in 52 games (151 ABs). And it would have surely prevented us from getting Reed Johnson when he became available.

#21 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

I agree, but that says more about Marlon Byrd than it does Matt Murton.

#14 Re: Rich Harden? Just say NO. Didn't the Wood-Prior years teach

Harden injured his shoulder April 15 of 2007. Then this year Joe Stiglich (InsideBayArea.com) said he had an injury to his right subscapularis muscle, located at the underside of the shoulder blade and stretching to the upper arm. It was so bad at first that he couldn't throw a ball at all.

Hendry better make sure he comes with a stack of towels.

#16 Re: Rich Harden?

so you're saying Rich Harden is an injury risk? Holy shit, who knew? Damn, hope someone tells Hendry.

fwiw, when pitching this year, Harden has a 2.34 ERA with a 10.75 K/9. And he's pretty much going with a 2-pitch repetoire right now of fastball/change with a very occassional slider thrown in...at least the starts I've watched.

#26 Re: so you're saying

yeezus, why do you insist on putting words in my mouth???

I must have missed the references here to his subscap injury which is different from his previous should problems. Sorry for being 3/44.

Oh, and thanks for the insider info on his ERA.

Who knew?

#28 Re: so you're saying

what's ERA?

#29 Re: so you're saying

Equal Rights Amendment?

Who knew Harden was socially active 85 years ago?!

#30 Re: so you're saying

I like your joke, but the Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in the 1970's and ultimately defeated in 1982. 85 years ago would be approximately the time of the 19th Amendment (passed in 1920 -- 88 years ago), which gave women the right to vote in the U.S.

I majored in History in college. Couldn't help myself.

#32 Re: so you're saying

Well... it was actually proposed in 1923 (source).

:)

#35 Re: so you're saying

True enough. I withdraw my objection and move it be stricken from the record.
~sheepish grin~

#5 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

So that means Harden will make a great closer someday?

#6 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

Or he will be a vagina :)

#7 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher

I'd have no problems trading away a bunch of our young talent to get Harden. Might take a pretty serious package of our farm guys to get him, though. He's about as good as it gets. I worry about the injuries, but if he just gets me through the '08 playoffs, that'd be unbelieveable.

We'd have the best 1, 2, 3 punch of any of the contenders currently going. Thinking about Z, him, and Dempster in a playoff series is giving ME a Harden. (see what I did there, Rob? OMFG! I JUST PWN3D!!! LOLLERSKATES!1!one!1!!!! 1!1 ROFLCOPTER!1!!eleven!!)

#8 Re: Hendry With a Harden for A's Pitcher
