TCR: No Good Will Come of This

Save the Wrigley Name from Those Corporate Jackals, Sort Of

When NASCAR's Robby Gordon runs at the Chicagoland Speedway this weekend, the hood of his car will bear the Web address, SaveOurName.com. The site is a collection point for signatures from Cub fans who want to send a "message to the (Cubs') owners: Don’t sell the name. It’s wrong. It’s selfish. And we won’t stand for it."

By "we," the site's operator presumably means tradition-loving Cubs fans...and everyone at Deerfield,Illinois-based Jim Beam Brands Co., who created the site as part of an ad campaign.

If the Cubs were just now getting around to installing lights, I imagine Chicagoans United for Baseball in the Sunshine would be underwritten by Coppertone.

Grassroots movements just ain't what they used to be.

If jeff Gordon gets his way, they'll re-name it Wrigley Stadium.

Whatever, I remember in a chat one time you telling everyone how you're a die-hard Jeff Gordon fan. 'Rainblow warrior II' you wanted us to call you. YEAH YOU!

#2 Re: Save the Wrigley Name from Those Corporate Jackals, Sort Of

If Jim Beam feels so strongly about the issue, why don't they buy the naming rights and then keep the name Wrigley Field?

Well that's just a great point. If they did that I would switch to Jim Beam for all my brown-liquor needs.

Unrelated (except in some morbid way), and possibly 3/44, but some guy is creating a Wrigley replica cemetery for Cubs fans.

meh, let them call it Depends Undergarment Field for all i care.

zell's "job" is to do all those little ugly things to stuff he snaps up so he can pass on the product to its new owner without the new guy sharing the burden. it's part of why so many people hate the guy. as of now i got no complaints about the guy. he's been pretty damn hands-off while trying to take care of the trib's larger holdings.

i understand why some people wanna keep it...the neighborhood's name and tradition...the "feel"...etc.

i'm just one of those people that dont care about that kinda stuff, though.

Irony being that NASCAR is the embodiment of selling every surface you have in some sort of capitalist circus. I'm a big fan of capitalism and all that, I'm just saying...

And... effing Brewers. Up 4-2 on Cincy.

the fans are there and they are in full-team support. they are making an UNREAL amount of noise...the kind where the announcers have to scream into the mic over a crowd when a big play is unfolding.

"since gallagher changed teams does he get a new photo now ?"

Nope! I checked out the A's-Angels on Gameday and there was the same goofy photo of Sean staring out at me -- well, the same except that an Oakland cap had been Photoshopped onto his Cubs portrait. Made him look even goofier.

Regardless, congrats to him (Gallagher) on a good debut outing for the A's. And, for the record, the A's have gained ground on LAA -- they're only 4.0 games behind the Angels after their 9-2 victory tonight. White Flag trade, indeed!

#17 Site updates

I see that the TCR Depth Chart has been updated to:

1) list Rich Harden as our #1 starter (could we at least make Z a co #1?)
2) welcome Chad Gaudin to our bullpen
3) replace Michael Wuertz w/ Kevin Hart
4) showcase Eric Patterson as our starting LF (woot! go Eric)

Gallagher's first win with the A's coming at the expense of Angels' starter (and Ex-Cub prospect) Jon Garland. July 29th will be the 10 year anniversary of the Karchner-for-Garland trade (thank you Ed Lynch!)

Stevie Eyre pitches 1IP for Peoria yesterday: 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 1K.

They didn't show any replays of it, but you could kinda tell it was bad by the way everybody reacted.

I think Len said something to effect of "I hope that hit an empty seat from the noise it made" Um, apparently not.

#29 Look out Marmol, here comes Joyco

Dionisio Muyco (3-1, 2 saves, 1.93 ERA) our latest catcher--->pitcher project, is rocketing through the system. Promoted from Boise to Peoria after appearing in 4 games, he closed the game July 10 pitching a perfect ninth to pick up his second save.

#30 Re: Save the Wrigley Name from Those Corporate Jackals, Sort Of

Harden's first inning line: 13 pitches, 8 strikes, 5 balls. 12 fastballs, 1 changeup.

Heater ranged from 88 to 97 according to Gameday.

#31 Red Barron revisited

I see Yosh still has a sense of history, Harden wearing number 40.
