The Cubs go for the series win and Zambrano goes for lucky win number 13. A win today and the Cubs go 14-3-1 at series in Wrigley and their current 40-15 mark at home is their best start at Wrigley since 1916...which is when Wrigley opened. Some more fun with game notes...

  • Cubs center fielders have combined for  a league-leading .368 OBP and the Reed/Edmonds combo at center field has combined to hit .304 with 15 home runs and 65 RBI's.
  • The Cubs haven't committed an error in 7 straight games.
  • When the Cubs win, they've averaged 7.1 runs per game, when they lose: 2.6.

that pitt lineup is f'n pathetic.

Mark Cuban is the top bidder on the cubs!!!!!!! Hopefully this gets done this week!!!!!!

This is news? Didn't we know this a couple of weeks ago?

I wanted to take an opportunity to congratulate some of our authors/commenters on their selection into the ACB Grand Tournament of Douche. Apparently they've selected the 64 douchiest folks, in their minds, from all Cub-related internets. He was even smart enough to realize that he should appear in it himself.

Rob G. somehow pulled down a 2 seed in the Chuck from Ivy Chat bracket. He'll oppose Ryno from ACB in the 1st round.

Crunch is a 5 seed in San Diego Smooth Jazz Man from BCB bracket. He drew Al Yellon's inside source in the first round. Chad is surprisingly a 14 in the same bracket, and will face Jacob from BrewCrewBall.

My first round upset special is mannytrillo, a 14 seed in the Gaius Marius from 1060 West bracket. manny's drawn Kinky Reggae from BCB.

Also, a post-mortem congrats to John Hill, whose stay should be short, as he's the 9 seed in the Al Yellon bracket. He'll get Yellon in the 2nd round if he can get by Hardcore Legend from BCB.

funny thing is maddog used to run a site with a racist admin (there and on other forum sites) at 1908andcounting.

wonder why THAT GUY is not on the list...or maybe he is under another one of those weird names.

maddog and "his friend" must remember that whole calling-them-out and massive editing they did on 1908andcounting to cover asses when i threatened to go to school newspapers and administrators about having views like that while teaching at a public institution of learning.

That was a memorable occasion. You pwned them. It was one of your finest hours.

finest internet moments...

shoot me now.

but seriously, one shouldn't go about making total ego-jock-style "i own the world" asses of themselves if they want to leave a real life trail of themselves on the internet. at least im not a total asshole. one could do waaaaaaaay worse than just screwing with someone who has ego-pushing issues.

Speaking of fine internet moments of crunch, I humbly suggest we extend the same gift crunch gave to the Brewers to the next conquered team in a series--the hapless Bucs:

Thanks! Come again!

gotta say that one is stolen/found and not my work.

it's worth busting out for any reason, though.

i hope you can see it...he's doing it as hard as he can.

Besides being horrible outdated, should I be rooting for our guys? did RobG get seeded higher than Paul Sullivan?

i finally went into some of their articles...

on initial visit i was like "damn, these guys get 100 post, good for them."

on inspection it seems to be a 1/2 dozen people doing all the talking back/forth in long threads.

Holy Hell! I got troll their site more often.

apparently they haven't frequented TCR in recent years if they still have John Hill and they omitted Silent Towel. Heck ST deserves a bracket all to himself. You could use individual douche threads started by him to go against other douche threads started by him too.

John Hill was nominated because even though he has been gone for awhile, he was such a douche he still made it in.

Silent Towel is a complete fucking lunatic. That's why he isn't in the tourney.

Chad - You're Welcome. I nominated you. And I seconded Crunch. I really pushed for a higher seed for you Crunch, but people over there aren't as familiar with your work.

can i get a link to that nominations posting.

Actually, it was pointed out Silent Towel is in the tourney, just under a different name. I can't keep all these douchebags straight.

Silent Towel goes by Santos Sorrow. No?

actually they are familiar with my work.

maybe not THIS work...but theyre familiar with my work.

John Hill a douchebag? Are you kidding me? The boy was a genius!! An absolute sabermetric wunderkind. Geniuses can never be douchebags simply because they exist on a different plane of consciousness. Assholes maybe, but never ever douchebags.

Z was pulled in the 6th, for no apparent reason. Lou came out to the mound at the start, appearing to stall to get Smard ready. Kasper speculating that his prior pitch counts (128, 118?) may be part of the reason.

Yea... Lou said in the post-game interview that is was strictly related to the high pitch counts in the two previous games, and they have been trying to shorten starts after high pitch counts.

Wrigley Field opened in 1914 as a home for the Whales of the Federal League. The Cubs moved in in 1916 after the Federal League folded..

thnx...poorly worded on my part.

Who's got LaRoche in the "Next Pirate Cub-Killer" pool?

I like getting other teams cast-offs.

I've got Reed Johnson in the "fuck-yeah" pool.

and another appearance for Chad Gaudin as "the vulture, part deux". He's now 3-1
The Vulture nickname was given by Sandy Koufax for picking up wins in short relief.

22 games over .500 is new season high water mark, Cubs haven't been this far above .500 since 1989.

156 Sun, Sep 24 box CHC PIT W 4-2 89-67 1 up 4.0 2:43 S Wilson J Robinson 37,904 ++++
(in 1989, they lost the next game but finished the season at 24 games over .500 which was their high water mark)

The 1984 team was 32 games over .500 on Sept that's a nice target to shoot for.

I like Lou's strategy for attempting to keep the SP arms fresh for the stretch run - as long as it doesn't burn out our BP arms in the same manner.

Wonder if Lou figured..."Z's qualified for the W, there's no way that Pirates team is gonna score 5 runs, and Z's next start is against the Cards, so let's give him a short day."

Wonder if Lou figured..."Z's qualified for the W, there's no way that Pirates team is gonna score 5 runs, and Z's next start is against the Cards, so let's give him a short day."

Sorry for the double.

Your double post aside, your point is dead on the money. I'm glad that it didn't cost us the game like it did in Game 1.

Quote of the Day:

"I have never wanted to win more than I do right here (Cincy), and I will,
but this is Wayne Krivsky's team, not Walt Jocketty's and not mine.
I just hope there is enough out there after the season that we can
get to help us." — Baker.

What a sorry, no account fraud. Boy am I glad that Dusty, and his culture of excuse is infecting another team in our own division. Hopefully he ends up in St. Louis or Milwaukee next.

Krivsky wanted Paul Bako and Corey Patterson?

Krivsy loves proven vets.....dude

And don't forget Jerry Hairston Jr. who signed, like Bako and KPatt, a minor league contract prior to Spring Training.

At least Hairston has actually been quite productive.

You can't say the same for Bako or Patterson. And wow... Patterson is still getting starts?

Bako's career line: .232 - .304 - . 318

Bako 2008: .220 - .293 - .345

So no, he definitely hasn't been "quite productive," but they got what they thought they were getting. Unless they are even dumber than we think.

he said Hairston was "quite productive", not Bako.

I read it correctly. I was simply saying that while they might have at least gambled on the possiblity that Patterson was going to be "quite productive" as well, they should have known what Bako is and they got pretty much exactly what they expected.

I didn't say anything about expectations. I was talking about productivity.

Regardless of expectations, Bako and Patterson have not been productive, while Hairston has been productive.

Nothing like throwing the guy who hired you under a bus.

But at least Dusty cleared a couple things up. If I follow his 2008 logic, (1)the 2003 Cubs weren't "his" team either (that team was assembled by Andy MacPhail & Don Baylor and they deserve the credit) (2) the (79-83)2005 and (66-96) 2006 Cubs definitely were.

skip caray has died...son of that guy and father of what's his face. 68 years old...died in his sleep.

Ah man, that's sad. I didn't realize he was that old, but I guess it makes sense.

You didn't realize that he was that old? His son is Chip, how old did you think he was?

"... but I guess it makes sense."

5-2 phillies, top 8...

4 run 8th for the phillies.

go not-stl. go not-mil.

Phils tried to give it away, but failed. Cards 6 back. Woo-hoo!

kerry wood threw 30 pitches off the mound of now club believes it'll be end of week+ before he returns.

when wood is activated who goes?

My wife, that's who!

I'll be here all week!

ok that definitely deserves a douche commendation. go chad!

I think Chad takes the whole damn tourney! You can do it Chad! Follow your dreams!!!!

Gotta say, we were a little disappointed in the seeding, but we're gonna take it one game at a time and not look past anyone. We are going to go out there and give it 100% and Good Lord willing, we're going to do alright.

Chad = Ebbie Calvin Nook LaLoosh

Only 100%?

You gotta a strap it on, step it up, and give at least 110%.

maybe my lack of commitment is why I was only a 14 seed.

Chad's most endearing quality is his ability to laugh at himself.

Honestly Chad, unless you get pissed off about being nominated you don't stand a chance.

I almost went over there to start a flame war in order to move on further. But i didn't feel up to it.

I'm just happy to be there like most small schools that are seeded this low. I don't expect to actually pull of the cinderella miracle.

It was just an honor to get nominated.

You know, I think it's a matter of the word "douche" being used incorrectly. It's the popular slam-word these days, but mainly it's just used willy nilly. Chad is a lot of things, but certainly, douche is not one of them. You nailed it Whipple San, a douche is categorically incapable of laughing at his inherent douchiness.

these are douche's:

Bob Brenly? Seriously? Not a douche.
Carrie Mustache? I'm uncertain about the possibility of female douches, but if there are, she might be one.

Thank you for your support Joe.

You're welcome.

I heard Chad likes it when it gets strapped on.

Strap ons are for women, my friend. I think I need to send you some video links...

Oh Chad, so naive. Strap ons are worn by women but they're not only for women. Some times a man enjoys when his parter...I've said too much.

I know, and I phrased my post poorly. You don't need strap ons for male on male action. That is what I was getting at.

Gotcha. Now we're on the same (very gross) page.

Jon Lieber will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with three innings at Class A Peoria. … Chad Fox threw his third bullpen session Sunday and will report to Arizona next week to rehab against rookie-leaguers, with hope of returning when rosters expand in September. ...

and welcome back to Wrigley LaT Hawkins?

The AZL league Cubs look they're staffed with Cubs. Yesterday they played:

J Jones

Don't forget N. Perez!

Patterson is still getting starts?
He's a prospect, dude. Better yet, he's a prospect who's not clogging the bases. Next year we'll get Eric too.

I'm in the finals against "Henry" in the first's the 2nd league doing?

Here's our draft as a reminder to everyone else...

killer swervedriver song. mmmm swervedriver.

YES! it was awesome to see them live this summer.

Me no likey

I want to see:

The last time Chad liked a lineup, we got shut out.

Is your only criteria that it be RLRLRLRLR?

No, i moved edmonds higher up.

Its a good thing. CHAD liking a lineup is the kiss of death. ROB G is correct. When he said "Me Likey" last time, Cubs lost 3-0 to the Pirates.

Like they had a shot at scoring a run that day?

They were (i have to assume) emotionally drained from the 4 game sweep and were primed for a let down game.

Also, I would care to bet a lot of money that most of, if not the entire team, was playing with a total hangover. I have got to assume that they PARTIED when they got back home Thursday night.

The lineup?

Well, it, you know, sucks.

30. Houston Astros (25): Why? Why, God, why?

"Larry (who?) Dobrow"

Looks like the guy who works at my local GameStop.

Soto will be given the day off tomorrow, I hope?
Lou has got to start playing Blancoi twice a week.

Speaking of Soto, that was a great walk in the 8th inning yesterday.

Two easy outs, then Soto takes close pitches on 1-2 and 2-2 and checks his swing on 3-2. They change pitchers, and balls start flying out of the park.

At least Lee, Dero and Riot make a strong bench. Whatever happened to spacing apart days off?

"They were (i have to assume) emotionally drained from the 4 game sweep and were primed for a let down game."

Not according to the Trib guys, who want the city to give them more night games after late nights back from road trips. I tend to agree with them (and Lou) on this point, but it's not gonna happen.

Ok, you are helping to make my point. Why do you think they want more night games?

Point being, the didn't care (my assumption) that they had a day game the next day. Went out and partied all night. Figured the Pirates wouldn't show up.

Just one more reason I'd like to see the Rule 4 draft go global.

Talk about douchebags...

I do agree with your point, Chad - just pointing out the reality that the Trib is using the loss to angle for more weekend night games (because they're soo tired after the trip, but not in any way because of any partaking of alcoholic beverages), rather than admitting the obvious.

The Cubs haven't been making the best use of the night games that they can. If they really were concerned about a day game after a road trip, then they should move all those night games scheduled for the middle of the series to the first game of the home stand. Just look at the home schedule closely and you'll see what I mean.

  • So, the Mesa Cubs should be solid this summer in the AZL Rookie League?

And, I like the, "But did you know" lead in there. Something a little different.

I can tell really like this group of hitters in AZ right now.

What pitchers out there, other than Cease, should we be excited about?

Thanks as always for the info.

  • I'm not sure there was another team in baseball that would flip a Dansby Swanson type of prospect (plus Inciarte, plus Toussaint) for Miller.  That trade was just comically bad from the start, and getting worse...

  • Pirates jumping all over Shelby Miller tonight - so glad the Cubs didn't flip a Dansby Swanson type prospect to the Braves for him. Two years of Lackey looking like a good alternative.

  • 3rd inning...soler walked twice in the game...first time since aug 4th last year in the regular season (2 times in the playoffs, amazingly).

  • Very bizarre game -- as you say, both Cubs pitchers were dominant until the one fatal pitch. It was like watching the Bears defense shut down a team, and then lose on 2 punt returns. Some better hitting with RISP would be a good idea, too.

No, I think you're thinking of Radiohead, The 1975, or Bowie's last album.
