Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
- Rosenthal says the Braves are growing impatient and may pull their offer by Friday when free agency opens up. USA Today says "one team" is demanding a resolution by the 14th (let's take a guess on which team). Rosenthal goes on to say the Padres have sent counter-offers to the Cubs and Braves, although he doesn't think either team will up the ante. In terms of players involved, he mentions Sean Marshall and possibly Josh Vitters.
- Sullivan thinks the Cubs are offering about 4/50 to Dempster right now.
- The Toronto Globe and Mail thinks Dempster is pretty likely to stay a Cub and says he'll take a discount if the Cubs acquire Peavy.
UPDATE: Buster Olney says the Cubs and Padres are trying to get a 3rd team involved and that Josh Vitters might be in play. I'd be surprised if the Cubs dealt Vitters or Samardzija myself, but you never know.

Can we have the old Rich Hill back? A Z, Peavy, Demp, '07 Hill, Lilly rotation would be alright. Of course they won't score any runs in the playoffs, so who gives a shit.
What happens to Harden? I'm sorry, I should know this, but I've tried to think about the Cubs as little as possible the last two months.
#2 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
Anyone think if Cubs get Dempster and Peavy they will flip Harden for a lefty bat?
#3 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
unless it's a bat of epic proportions then no thanks
I drool over the thought of
Peavy
Z
Harden
Dempster
Lilly
That right there is a 110 win season.
#10 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
if by some miracle, we do get Peavy and Dempster, the thought of Peavy, Harden, Z, Dempster, Lilly would be pretty damn exciting, but you have to wonder about the Marquis situation.
It's a good bet the Cubs would have to shed some salary for at least one-left handed bat and Marquis would be a lot harder to move than Harden and would get you much less in a trade. On top of that, you have to wonder about rotation stability. Assuming you've traded at least Marshall and possibly another starter, you've got a lot of guys in the rotation that our injury risks. Who steps in when they go down withouth Marshall and let's say Atkins or whatever.
We'd still have Gaudin and they could sign Lieber or something like him again and I'll assume Samardzija isn't getting traded and there's always Rich Hill, but the pitching staff could fall apart quickly. And I think it's a safe bet that if the Cubs got Peavy and Dempster that Harden wouldn't be resigned after this year.
Now I'm not advocating it, I'd love to see them move Marquis and roll the dice with that kind of talent, but it's certainly something to think about. And Harden would definitely be the best trading chip we have.

We too drool over the thought of...
Lilly
Peavy
Z
Harden
Dempster
#5 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
Ted,
I would put Lilly ahead of Harden based on durability.
#6 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
I just drool a lot, no matter what the occasion.
#7 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
I love the idea of getting swept in October by scores of 1-0, 2-0, 1-0.
They ask if it could get worse, well yeah, that is worse.

Hoffpauir a 2-star prospect? unpossible...he's s every bit as good as Derrek Lee and would never, ever hit into a double play.
#11 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
Anyone think there is something to the Padres withdrawing their offer to Hoffman? Like maybe they are getting a potential power arm to try at closer from the Cubs, i.e. Samninja or Ceda? Or someone from the Braves? Or maybe its nothing.

#13 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
it's just them cutting costs....
#14 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
Espn 1000 Bruce Levine is reporting Padres and Braves have "two pieces in place to complete trade," but Cubs still might have a chance.
#15 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
Olney said the same thing in his article...
#16 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
Thought so too
#19 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
My bad
#12 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
No BP love for Casey Lambert or Mitch Atkins?
#17 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
There isn't anybody on Baseball Prospectus' list or combination thereof that I wouldn't trade for Peavy. Samardzija has the NTC, and Cashner/Flaherty can't be traded until after June 15th or whenever the June draft is held this year.
#18 Cubs will talk to Petitte?
so says Richard Justice

Lincecum gets the NL CY
#21 Re: Tuesday Cubs Hot Stove Round-Up
Lincecum, Webb, Johan, Lidge, CC, Dempster was the final vote...
probably would have flipped Johan and Webb myself, Dempster got 4 3rd place votes
#22 Let's hope Andy's source is right
please oh please
http://www.desipio.com/?p=1782
The Jake Peavy to the Cubs rumors will not die, and today they took a turn for the interesting.
A source within the Padres organization claims that it’s “basically a done deal” (whatever basically means) that Peavy is headed to Chicago, and that the Cubs will send back Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ryan Theriot.
Is this one of those “I know a guy, who knows a guy” deals? Yes, that’s exactly what it is. So I have no idea if it’s true. All I can say is that the “source” is a guy who actually should know.
and from the comments..
Andy

The source of this rumor reports to Kevin Towers directly. Nope, not Masur or Vasgersian.
#23 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
the Cubs will send back Felix Pie, Sean Marshall and Ryan Theriot.
Oh my... that would be incredible.
#24 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
Interesting. That would seem to seriously conflict with today's rumors about the Braves having pieces in place, but perhaps they ended up asking for too much. I have a bad feeling though this will be akin to the '05 blog from some dude that Furcal signs with the Cubs, only to have him sign with the Dodgers the next day.
Rob, I'm guessing the "please oh please" is more about shedding Theriot than acquiring Peavy? :)
#25 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
"the '05 blog from some dude that Furcal signs with the Cubs"
As long as WSCR George Offman is not reporting it, it could be true.
#27 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
yup, trading Theriot means they're planning to sign Furcal would be my guess...
I give that rumor about a 1% shot of having any truth to it, because I don't think the Cubs would move Theriot w/o knowing for sure about Furcal and they haven't been able to talk money yet and there's a good 4-5 teams that are interested in him.
And the fact that is a shitty deal for the Padres....
#28 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
Could be Padres are releasing this to scare Braves into action.
If the Theriot gets traded they better sign Furcal asap. Ronny the Retard for 160 a games will not be pleasant.
#29 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
not sure the Padres would use Andy Dolan of desipio.com to float a rumor to get the Braves to pony up. 99.8% chance no one in the Braves has heard of it....
#30 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
99.8?
Would the Cubs trade Theriot if they Greene back in the deal somehow? They'd make a run at Furcal, sure, but Greene would be the back up plan.
Of course, perhaps the deal is "basically" done except for the little detail that Hendry still has to find a third party to get involved to send more pitching to SD.
#40 Re: Let's hope Andy's source is right
Could it mean Ronny Cedeno at Short? Or maybe Khalil Green is coming this way?
